BlackoutBerry

by Volker Weber

RIM says:

"The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed."

My BIS BlackBerry seems to be back on the net.

My BIS BlackBerry seems to be back on the net.

Maybe, but for how long? Mine woke up at 04:20 UK time today and delivered most of yesterday's email. Then again at 04:51. Off at 06:17 and, other than a brief flurry of activity at 09:35, that is it.

I just took delivery of a new 9360 Curve but may send it back and get an HTC. I fear RIM may not recover this time.

Also, the story about a switch failing (single point of failure, anyone?) is inconsistent with this story in The Guardina, which says:

The Guardian understands that RIM was attempting a software upgrade on its database but suffered corruption problems, and that attempts to switch back to an older version led to a collapse.

This database corruption story is thus far unconfirmed by other sources...

@Chris: What SPOF? The story they are selling includes a backup switch. Although a failing one.

Robert Dahlem, 2011-10-12

@Robert - the SPOF is the primary switch. The backup "did not function as expected" - i.e. had not been tested, at least not recently. An untested continuity plan is the same as no continuity plan in my book.

In the past day it was more a batchBerry. My mail came in batches every 30 to 40 minutes. Sending mail was barely possible

i started a bes install tuesday morning , wondering why the srp said unknown and is still waiting now close to 3 days later.

RIM failed big time , the only info they give out is a stupid tweet twice a day and a press release , even out telco isnt getting anything.

One thing is that they failed big time ,but their damage controll and press handling leaves room for improvement.

Wonder if their stock drop will be closer to 20 or 50 points

@Chris: "did not function as previously tested". That's something else.

Anyway: No failure of one component (including its backup) should trigger a nearly complete system failure of this scale in a larger-than-enterprise operation, that's for sure.

Als BlackBerry Admin werde ich mir folgenden coolen Satz von Robin Bienfait, Chief Information Officer, RIM, gut merken:

"......We believe we understand why this happened and we are working to restore normal service levels "!
