ITworld: Has IBM kicked OpenOffice.org to the curb?

by Volker Weber

Hey, here's one for you: would somebody explain to me why we're at the point where statements like "OpenOffice.org can't be allowed to die!" are being made?

I think the first response to that article clearly states "No.".

Is anybody aware of the current IBM Lotus Symphony roadmap beyond version 3? I mean beside renaming it to "IBM Symphony 3" (sorry, just joking :-)

Peter Meuser, 2011-10-14

@Peter, yes, many people are. It is just under non-disclosure at this point.

Re OP, it might be useful to review the Apache Software Foundation statement.

Ok Ed, if I am not member of the "ingroup", than I just have to wait for the right information. Please don't forget to publish about the commercial available XPage based solutions (I am asking for them since the last Lotussphere... :-)

Peter Meuser, 2011-10-14

Peter, are you talking about the IBM XWork Server? If so, google it...was announced recently.

Mike McPoyle, 2011-10-14

Mike, Ed knows what I am looking for: A list of commercial applications, which were build entirely on XPages technology by IBM partners.

Peter Meuser, 2011-10-15

I think the area of desktop propriety office applications has crossed its zenith. The future lies with browser based office apps. Just watch Google Docs, Office 365, Symphony live and the XPages spreadsheet plug-in.
Of course quite some stuff needs to be sorted out: feature parity, offline use etc. So I don't see a big future for the OO UI, but a bright one for the core engine.

In fact, a small group of users seems to use it (more or less people with to much leisure time). All others who have to produce and share their deliverables are satisfied with the de-facto standard. Unnecessary to quote the name. Taking this into account i wondering why OO not about to quit earlier .....
