Three generations. And they are all good.

Amazon continues to impress me - not just with the Kindle, which I love (as a big reader, it is super easy to carry around & the screen & battery are great for long reading & it is reasonably priced), but with AWS which is becoming a quiet powerhouse in the cloud. Plus, I'm interested in seeing how the Fire does. I think they're a formidable competitor to Apple in this space - they are all about convenience and the Kindle makes it stupid easy to purchase books on the fly. I suspect that the Fire will make it stupid easy to purchase books, music, movies & everything else Amazon sells. And it's significantly cheaper than the iPad. I don't think it will be an iPad replacement - they serve different markets. But the Fire is aimed at people who may not be willing to pay the premium that Apple demands. It should be interesting...

I dearly love my kindle. Screen just needs to be bigger to make it a great place to keep (and read) your technical books.

The Fire is a new play. It's going to make other Android tablets a very difficult play. Amazon, much like Apple, and unlike Google, has content.

John, I only read prose on the Kindle. For technical books you need the DX.

I can't say anything about the older Kindle versions, but I have bought the current version and I really love it. However, I have to agree with John Mill that the screen could be a little bit bigger to better accomodate technical books, comics and Japanese literature.

I don't know the Kindle Fire yet, but from what I read, it's not going to be as versatile as "normal" Android tablets, i.e. you won't be able to install all apps from the Android market. Is that correct? If so, it wouldn't qualify as an alternative for me. I do use the Kindle app on my Android. What would make me buy the Amazon flavor of Android? Of course, nicer integration into the UI is a plus, but at the expense of versatility of a general purpose tablet? Besides reading prose on it, I also like to surf the web, do my personal and corporate PIM, review office documents that I am being given for review, etc. pp.

It's not for you. It's for your Ma.

I can see what you're trying to say, but let me tell you - you don't know my Ma. :-)
