SMS black hole

If you send me an SMS message, it ends here. Just deleted a few dozen of them. Phone calls are being forwarded to whatever phone I am currently using. If I seem to ignore your text messages, remember that I don't. I never see them.

Just curious: are you happy that the SMS messages go into a black hole, or is it just something you tolerate because you're always switching phones back and forth?

I give people my Google Voice number and have it forward the SMS messages to GMail, where I can answer them from any of my devices (and save them within GMail, if I want to). In the US, though we consider ourselves a high tech country, we tend to have much worse mobile signal than most of Europe (as you know, of course), and email is much more reliable for me than SMS. Before I came up with this system, my wife would send me text messages and I wouldn't get them for hours.

SMS is reliable. And a complete rip-off. Operators charge anywhere between 9 and 19 ct per SMS. And then they bundle thousands of texts into a "flatrate" tariff.

I think SMS is slowly being replaced with other messenger services like WhatsApp or BBM. They don't work for me either, because they attach themselves to a particular phone. Then you have chats via Facebook for instance. Popular because they also work on the desktop. Still not my cup of tea.

Whoever has to reach me in a timely fashion needs to use email. That is the only thing that always works.

@Rob, if Google Voice was available outside the US, I'm sure we'd be using it. However, Google has been appalling slow at rolling it our more widely. A mistake in my opinion.
