Farewell, webOS

by Volker Weber

HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.

Last exit right.

All the good people have moved on, nobody wanted to buy the remains. What else can you do? Release your pet and hope it survives out there. This is going the way of the Newton. Beloved by many, but a dead end nevertheless. If HP comes back with a handheld, I rather see it run on Windows (Phone) 8.

On a side note: two days ago I had my first chance to look at the HP TouchPad which they sold for $99. If you did not get one, don't feel bad. You saved $99. I'd take a PlayBook over a TouchPad any day. It's not even a race.

I don't have a BlackBerry and got the 32GB touchpad for 130€, which was imo a good price for such a pad. And CyanogenMod Android as second OS next to WebOS runs fine, despite it is only a alpha version.

Why is the touchpad loosing so hard?

It's extremely sluggish compared to a PlayBook (or an iPad).

And to this day, there are still ways that the *Palm* OS beats my Android phone (and other stuff I have had in the meantime). Not least among them: Graffiti.
