Apparently, they configure those personal devices by hand and don't even use their own MDM, which strikes me as a bit strange.

Nope. No IT involvement in my part of IBM. And tons of BYOD. You point to the traveler server and off you go. (The IBM endpoint manager will be rolled out - with 500k users that will take a while - and I'm not looking forward to it - unless I get paid for give up control over stuff I paid for).
