If you install enough messengers, you can potentially reach all your friends. Unfortunately, the battery will be dead.

With the good old SMS you can also reach all of your friends :-)
Imagine how fast all those messengers would disappear, if the big companies would let you send SMS for free.
Why hasn´t this happened already?
Those messengers do a bit more than sending SMS.
Just imagine we had the same protocol mess in eMail - oh wait, we had! How did we overcome this and settled on SMTP? What would need to happen in the messenger space?
