Office and Dropbox to work together on phones, tablets and web

by Volker Weber

Over the coming weeks, we’re updating Office apps so that they work with Dropbox, too. With the next updates to Word, Excel and PowerPoint on iPhone, iPad and Android Phone you’ll be able to connect to your Dropbox account, so you can access, edit and share your Dropbox files right from your Office apps. Once you’ve added your Dropbox account to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, you can navigate folders and files on Dropbox for viewing and editing in the native Office apps. And accessing Word, PowerPoint and Excel from your Dropbox app is just as easy. Navigate to the file you want, and the Dropbox app will open the Office app you need.

Ingo Seifert, 2014-11-04 19:25

Peter Meuser, 2014-11-04 21:32

This is interesting and confirmation that Microsoft is serious about playing broadly with many players.

Which brings me to Dropbox. I don't see how they have a survivable model. Most all the other players have "storage + other stuff". Google w/ Google Apps, services, adn DRive. Microsoft has Office365 with unlimited storage. Amazon Prime has unlimited storage. Dropbox has file storage.

For the price for 1TB of Dropbox for a year, you can get Office365 + Unlimited Storage from MS.

Dropbox needs to sell to someone, and soon.

Dropbox may or may not have a long term survivable business model; but they have near unbeatable user experience going for them. Integration on top of other services can make being "just storage" a serious advantage. Maybe people will want to pick & choose between spreadsheet, media storage, CRM, ticketing, online password store, source code repository services from different vendors... and would see value in doing that with just one storage platform rather than using a handful of services that are tied into another platform.
