This is how you sell the Apple Watch

by Volker Weber

Christy Turlington instead of Glassholes. Fashion instead of geeks.

Well, definitely a different approach - question is who will pick up this message. Just looking at the silhouette of Christy, I would not (and wish my daughters will not either) pick her as their role model.

Matthias Lorz, 2015-03-10

Oh dear.

Volker Weber, 2015-03-10

Well, you're right, I was not focussing on the watch....

Matthias Lorz, 2015-03-10

Having just read up on Christy Turlington, I can't understand why she wouldn't be a great role model for my daughter (if I had one)

Frank Quednau, 2015-03-11

That's because only supermodels can afford such a damn thing. :)

Kai Bode, 2015-03-11

Matthias, your judgement is way off.

Kai, does it make me a Supermodel if I can afford one?

Volker Weber, 2015-03-11

I've just had this vision of Volker walking down the catwalk in high heels.

What a weird way to start the day.

Andrew Magerman, 2015-03-11

Compared to the Apple fitness/geek-device commercial she did, this one would actually sell into the target group, I guess. Advertising the Apple watch as a fitness device doesn't work for me, it's just not authentic.

Stefan Funke, 2015-03-11

5 inch or flats, no compromise. You are welcome, Andrew.

Volker Weber, 2015-03-11

She is being used to sell to the Instagram group - who take selfies and fashion shots and have 100k followers. Plus you add in her humanitarian efforts and she is a great face to make the watch both fun and fashionable.

And if anyone reads up on her humanitarian efforts, which dwarf anything all of us have done, and doesn't think she is a decent role model, not sure who you would be happy with. Ghandi?

John Head, 2015-03-11

It was an awkward moment when Christy met Tim on his stage / playground ... not quite a fit ... yet - I am sure next time it will be perfect - I am looking forward to see Apple Execs at Victoria Secret shows promoting whatsoever ;-)

Claude Lehmann, 2015-03-11

"Fashion instead of geeks" isn't this how you sell almost any watch?

Giuseppe Grasso, 2015-03-11

Okay, okay, I got it - to whoever stumbled at my role model quote - It's great to see her project for "Every mother counts" (and yes, with three kids I totally agree about the issue she's tackling).

What I do not like is the fact that people (and this is just one example out of many) that have a high caliber and public presence camouflage a message like this as if it was just their wish to inform us about something - it's advertisement, nothing else.

I just consider it dishonest - and this is not the position / role I want my girls to take. You may disagree and tell me that this is what every A-brand is doing...well.

Now back to work...and to a Pebble watch on my wishlist.

Matthias Lorz, 2015-03-11

...and in addition to this, my remark on the silhouette of her was not acceptable, at all. I realize.

Matthias Lorz, 2015-03-11

You are a smart guy. Just admit you were wrong and we let you go. ;-)

Volker Weber, 2015-03-11

Matthias Lorz, 2015-03-11

;-)

Volker Weber, 2015-03-11

Nice Ad. But it doesnt change my opinion that the apple watch is the most useless product Apple ever made.

Roland Dressler, 2015-03-11

It does not have to. You are irrelevant.

Volker Weber, 2015-03-11

Yes Volker, I know, its irrelevant. But (for me) a fact.
Apple products were always expensive and more "stylish" then any other. But there were also yery useful in a long term. My Ipad2 is now 4 years old and daily in use by my son. It still looks new and works perfect. I know people running around (as IT consultants) with Macbooks which are many years old and with no really limitations. The Apple Watch is different. "Watch" is expensive & stylish, but is it also a good product? For me its not. To many limitations. I believe, the 2015 "Watch" will be scrap metal (or gold) already next year. By the way, thats also a difference between "Watch" and the watches from a jeweller.

Regardless, it will sell like hotcakes, i know.
