When I move files between my computers and phones, most of the times, I just use Infinit. Works on Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, Windows. Once in a while I also share files with other people over Infinit. It's incredibly fast and reliable. Free and unlimited.

Go get it with for 500 MB of permanent storage for links.

This looks very interesting and I could really make use of it, but I wonder: if there is the possibility...

1) to send a link to a file on my computer to somebody else
and if there is...
2) no "Cloud" involved where this file gets uploaded and temporarily stored

... doesn't this mean there has to be a background process with root privileges running on my computer or iPhone/ iPad granting access to my entire file system?

I hope this isn't too stupid a question - I'm an interested "noob", basically.

No, it does not mean that. On iOS you cannot give an app full access to your file system.
