Durchwachsen

Was für mich super funktioniert, since die Office Mobile Apps.

Does it make sense?

Ingo Seifert, 2015-07-31

XBOX...

The Universal version of Skype will be released later this year:

RE: Office licensing costs:

"Microsoft officials have said previously that the coming Office Universal apps will be bundled for free on Windows 10 devices with screen sizes of 10.1 inches and below. On Windows devices of screen sizes of 10.2 inches or greater, Microsoft is expected to do what it's done with Office for iOS and Android: To require an Office 365 subscription only in order to unlock more advanced functionality."

Surface 3 is 10.6 inches. How convenient.

And there will be no Universal Windows App (UWA) of Skype. You were lured by the sugar coating. Let me help you with bullshit detection:

"Starting on July 7, we’re updating PC users of the Windows modern application to the Windows desktop application, and retiring the modern application."

We killed the modern app.

"Users will also be able to choose to use the familiar Skype for Windows desktop app"

You have one choice. The desktop app.

"Later this summer, we’ll roll out the Preview for Universal Skype experiences built into Messaging, Phone and Video apps on Windows 10."

We are still cooking and will add Skype messaging, voice and video calling to other apps.

Volker Weber, 2015-07-31

I've always used the full desktop app, so I'm fine with they way they are going, but there *will* be targeted separate Messaging, Phone and Video universal apps as well. I guess it just depends on how you define things.

Craig Wiseman, 2015-07-31

We are very close.

1. You are using the desktop app. You don't miss the modern app. That's fine.

2. The desktop app is a win32 app that runs on all versions of Windows.

3. Windows Phone has phone, messaging and video apps. And a Windows Phone Skype app.

4. Windows 10 Mobile, the successor of Windows phone, will have phone, messaging and video apps. Skype _functionality_ will be added to these apps.

5. Presumably these will be UWAs so they can also run on PCs, where they have to adjust to the missing "phone" part.

What I am saying is that the Skype client as we know it is dead as a modern and soon UWA app. It will be broken into three pieces and added to three apps.

Volker Weber, 2015-07-31

I disagree because you have to look at the overall strategy with "Skype xxx". There is also Skype for Business (the artist formerly known as Lync) and the according client also is Win32 only. I am not aware of any Modern App/UWA implementation right now but I bet they will build one. I could more think of a modern app which can serve both for Skype or Skype4B as a backend. Think of the Onedrive apps on iPhone or Android which can both consume Onedrive and Onedrive4B. It just takes some time...

Ingo Seifert, 2015-07-31

Sure. But Skype for Business and Skype don't have much in common but the name. Marketing is always faster than engineering.

Volker Weber, 2015-07-31

Onedrive and Onedrive for Business (which is Sharepoint storage) did not have much in common either... Let's make a bet :).

Ingo Seifert, 2015-07-31

I just installed Word Mobile on my normal desktop PC. Without an Office 365 subscription, I can only use it as a document viewer. The app actually tricked me into logging in with my Microsoft account by promising additional functionality beyond viewing capabilities, but once I was logged in it only offered getting Office 365 to unlock other functions.
Thanks, Obama!

Daniel Haferkorn, 2015-07-31

Jau, Ingo. Gegen einen Microsoft-Architekten wetten. Gute Idee. ;-)

Volker Weber, 2015-07-31

Die zusätzlichen Features mit O365 gibt's hier:

https://products.office.com/de-de/office-resources#table11
