Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft started the rollout of Windows 10 to upgradable phones yesterday. If you are already running Build 10586, you don't need to upgrade again. And you don't need to restore 8.1 to upgrade to Build 10586. This is the list of Lumias that get the upgrade (after carrier approval): 430, 435, 532, 535, 540, 635, 636, 638, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 930, 1520.

Any phone with 512MB of main memory won't get the update, but there are others missing as well: the 920, 925, and 1020 for instance, all once considered flagship phones. Those were upgradable on the Windows Insider track, but they did not perform well. The advice from Microsoft is to eventually downgrade those to 8.1.

There will be no second wave according to Gabe Aul. This is it (the Icon is the Verizon 930):

Windows Phone 7 didn't upgrade to Windows Phone 8.
Now former Windows Phone 8 flagships don't upgrade to Windows 10 (although initially announced!).
Microsoft fucks it all up again.

Technically, you can/could upgrade. But you do not want to. The hardware just does not cut it.

Microsoft has always been very careful not to announce which phones would be upgradable. We were only second guessing them.

Not at all. If you wanted to, you could be a happy camper since roughly half a year ago - that was, when the builds started to be sweet (to be exact, it was build 10166, 10.7.2015, I remember well ;) ).

Also, the builds are running well on those devices. Not well enough for a full scale, pushed rollout by a manufacturer, probably, but well enough, if you want to have it (in fact they are running fine). Same goes for the Lumia 630, but those buyers do not care, mostly, anyway. The people who *do* care are having it since months.

Some more facts:
Lumia 920: 5.11.2012
Lumia 925: 14.5.2013
Lumia 1020: 10.7.2013

Apple does a lot better (they are pretty much perfect in that), others do a *lot* worse. And I agree that this is all a little messy. They would rather have just closed the book and moved on, I suppose.

Of course it is easy to be unsatisfied, if somebody only wants it enough. Same for the other way around :) I try sticking there.

It's a big download by the way, over 4GB. (I have an LTE/4G "broadband" connection in my house which is limited to 35GB/month; after that the speed drops to ISDN speed).

John Keys, 2016-03-18

I burn through about 10 GB a day, John. :-)

Volker Weber, 2016-03-18

I used to use much more, but the connection was WiMax and quite slow, this is Ok - 35Mb/s download. But I have to be careful. I hope they will up the limits with time - it's new service, only been available a few months here in Spain.

@Hubert:
iPad 2: 11.03.2011, still on current iOS

I do not need to upgrade my Lumia 920 to Windows 10. I'm very happy with my Lumia 950 XL ;-)
But Microsoft's behavior harms the platform. Decreasing market shares are not good for Windows Phone lovers...

Manfred Wiktorin, 2016-03-18

Manfred, like I said, Apple are pretty much perfect at that. Regarding the XL, same here. And as Nokia fanboys and WP lovers, we are *really* used to pain ;) By now, we need it 8-)

I have a 1020 and I was holding on to it to give win 10 a spin. Now that this phone is stuck it looks like the story's gonna end here. I am kinda sad because the UI is absolutely up my alley, but the app gap is very large, with Microsoft products being superior on the major platforms than on their own OS.

Frank Quednau, 2016-03-18

WindowsPhone 10.10586.164 runs just fine on a Lumia 920. Couldn't find any flaws. Early insider Preview ran like crap, but the actual versions are quite nice and i assume it will run nicely on the 1020 as well, though i haven't tested it.

Kai Schmalenbach, 2016-03-18

Frank, do not try to push it on a 1020. That machine shouldn't even exist. No GPU and a billion pixels per second.

Volker Weber, 2016-03-18

Frank, Volker is right. Not on the 1020, if you are actually using the camera as what it is.

When you like UI chaos, cheap and risky: buy Android.
When you like to watch battery charging and a supreme UI: buy Apple
When you just want to your business and travel: you used to buy Windows Phone. Brilliant phone, reliable apps, Here, Office Integration, good battery use...

As a Windows Phone 8 addict (520, 720, 2x 640) I cannot stop thinking about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSUIQgEVDM4

This the end...

Did someone say: "harms the platform"? LOL
