Let's raise the bar for Android recommendations

by Volker Weber

Nexus or BlackBerry, these are the only phones with quick monthly Android security patches. Lenovo just started shipping their new flagship Moto Z with the May patch. That's a brand new phone with two months old security level, and apparently they have no plans for shipping monthly patches.

From now on, I will check the security patch level and report it. And then come back within a month when I see or do not see the next patch coming in. Security has to become the number 1 feature given the malware situation on Android right now. Remember the top of the line Yoga Tab 3 Pro? Patch level March 1. Lenovo passed April, May, June and the huge July patch.

Vote with your money and only buy secure devices.

Great! Thanks, Volker.

Could you please include Huawei? They are doing a pretty good job in patching their devices.

Dirk Deimeke, 2016-07-25

Wow, you are such a good mother! Thanks!! Agree with Dirk, the Huawei ones are really attractive devices.

Ingo Seifert, 2016-07-25

Don't have data on Huawei patches. Let's wait for the August patch next week and then collect data.

Thank you Volker!

I´d like to mention the Fairphone 2 - they published the update including the July 2016 Android fixes on July 14th, the June fixes on 14th of June, the May fixes on May 23rd. Seems like they are living a monthly update schedule.

What about Oneplus-Devices? e.g. Oneplus One: CM13.1 patchlevel July, released on July 6th ota

Michael Oehme, 2016-07-25

I'd recommend BlackBerry devices. Biased? Me? Naaah.

Dragon Cotterill, 2016-07-25

I concur. Did my research, wrote a litte piece about that gets published in less than two weeks and will write another one here.

Bought Moto X Pure Edition figuring I wouldn't have to wait for Verizon to release patches. Well,, Motorola is hardly any better. Still sitting at Feb 1 2016 security patch level.

Bill Brown, 2016-07-25

Motorola does not exist any more. They are Lenovo.

I'm still a happy camper with Windows 10 Mobile (running perfectly on my Lumia 950 XL). But when i need to buy a smartphone with a different OS, this information will be very helpful.
So a big thank you for this effort!
