Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Next Tuesday the "Anniversary Update" of Windows 10 is upon us. What does that mean? Nothing.

Windows used to be distributed on physical media. There was a "Release to Manufacturing" date. And a ship date. But today, there is continuous delivery. Features get added, bugs get fixed. You can be on the Windows Insider program and get those changes earlier, you can even be lagging behind the current "release" as an Enterprise that has to be careful to avoid thousands of helpdesk calls.

Windows 10 isn't done. It will never be done. It's under construction, for the foreseeable future. For Windows phone it's not even in a state where it could be rolled out to all devices. On PCs it will be many different experiences, depending on the drivers you need for your hardware.

Windows is work in progress. And it has never been better than now.

Should you upgrade to Windows 10 now, while it is free? I believe you should. Despite all the Microsoft marketing efforts to destroy it.

If you use a pen with Windows 10, you should update as soon as you can. Windows Ink changes everything about pen computing IMO.

Unfortunately you cannot update from Windows 7 to Windows 10 if you run Windows 7 via Bootcamp on a Mac Mini (Late 2014). Intel Iris Graphics 5100 is the problem and all tricks to get around the problem do not work anymore.

I think you should run OS X on a Mac Mini, not Windows.

And I thought Insider Preview is all about testing and reporting bugs!?

Henning Heinz, 2016-07-26

Henning, it's no secret any more, that 14393 is the final build that will be rolled out next Tuesday to all customers.

Manfred Wiktorin, 2016-07-26

Funny, I could not update the Mac Mini from Windows 7 to Windows 10 while it was free of cost, because of Intel Iris Graphics 5100 compatibility issues.

Now www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Und-noch-ein-Trick-weiterhin-kostenlos-an-Windows-10-zu-kommen-3288425.html does the trick, the compatibility issues are gone with this setup.
