Stuff that works :: Apple AirPods

I was very cautious when I first heard about the AirPods. They looked ridiculous and over-priced. People made jokes about losing them. Then I tried a pair for a few minutes and really liked the fit and the sound. My only reserve was that they weren't particularly loud and they would not isolate me from surrounding noise.

Then I got a pair for review and was allowed to keep them. I mean, who wants the dirt from my ears back? And they turned out to be my favorite headphones by a wide margin. For longer travel I still like over-the-ear headsets, for phone calls in noisy environments Plantronics still has the edge. But day in, day out, whether I am listening to music or making family IT support calls, I always use the AirPods. Their storage and recharging is second to none, they fit my ears perfectly (but possibly not yours), connecting them to my iThings is effortless.

As far as I am concerned, best Apple innovation in a long time.

...and they work not only with Apple stuff.

I am completely on your page.

Geht mir genauso!

Exactly my experience, best Apple product in a long time.

What do I miss from the AirPods experience if I have an iPhone 6Plus?

Anything?
Nothing?

I ask because I long for a pair of these - but have a feeling that until I have a newer iPhone I will not experience the full beauty of the 'pods.

Ian Bradbury, 2017-07-12

I am afraid you have to buy them right now. They work perfectly well with any iPhone. You are missing nothing. And your iPhone 6 should be good well into 2019.

Volker Weber, 2017-07-12

Perfectly agree! By no means an Apple fanboy (did I mention my great new X1 Carbon?) these Airpods are really fantastic. Yes, you still look stupid wearing them, but sound is ok and the overall handling is more than any other wireless headset I have seen. Buy them now, even a bit overpriced at ebay, do not wait!

I dunno. I keep hearing about how "magical" they are to pair. But you only pair them once to your iPhone. Sure, they'll also work with my iPad but I seldom need that and even if I had to pair them the traditional Bluetooth way it's not that big a deal.

That said, I do like the original earbuds and I was in the market for wireless buds so I decided to give them a try. 6 weeks later and... yeah, they're ok. I have usually used a Motorola earpiece with swinging boom because I HATE the typical controls on these things. Long press to turn it on... oops, no it was on so now I just hung up on someone. Airpods work nicely - off in the case, on in your ears. Nothing else to think about.

I didn't think I'd really care about no volume controls but I kinda wish I could control the volume if I wander away from my phone. Not usually that big a deal.

So they're OK but I don't understand people who say they're the best new Apple product in years.

Yes, AirPods do work. However, switching AirPods between my MacBook and my iPhone is not easy. In order to switch I always need to connect them manually in the Bluetooth menu. Every few week they will not connect anymore at all, I need to "forget" them and reconnect. That works better with my PTL Legend, which can connect to two devices.

Maybe I am doing something wrong. I just do not know what...

Felix Binsack, 2017-07-12

I have opted for PowerBeats 3 Wireless - same W1 chip, that makes switching also across iCloud accounts easy.

Dirk Bartkowiak, 2017-07-12

Bill, it is the way *how* they pair. I have never seen any other Bluetooth headset that pair and connect as easy as these. Even when the phone rings and you have them in their case, it is just taking them out and you are done. It is hard to describe, just try it.

Jonas Rathert, 2017-07-13

I had a horrible feeling that you'd all say exactly what you all said. Now I'll have to talk to the "Accountant".

Ian Bradbury, 2017-07-13

I also really love the AirPods. The only thing that keeps them from being perfect is that the battery does not survive two back to back one hours calls. But sound is great, the mic seems to be really good, too and they are lightweight you barely notice them in your ears.

Martti Garden, 2017-07-13

For IBMers: one in your ear, the other one in the case. Swap every hour. You can spend all day in conf calls. ;-)

Volker Weber, 2017-07-13

I couldn't agree more. The AirPods are with me nearly every day on my #dontbreakthechain Tour (60 to 120 minutes). Love them. About 5 Times, when haunting for bugs around my head, they fall out onto the street or in the grass. My greatest fear is not that they fall apart but that i am unable to see them in the gras. Yesterday i was 90 minutes on tour with them with a heavy downburst of rain. I had to dewater my AppleWatch two times. Not so the AirPods. I was wet to the bones but my AirPods just played from beginning to end. As Volker said: Stuff that works...

Bernd Hofmann, 2017-07-13

Bernd, you can use use "Find My iPhone" for playing a sound on the AirPods if you cannot find them. Works great.

Okay. AirPods acquired. And even though I've had them less than a day. Wow.

Merci for the advice.
