Why is Sonos so busy phoning home?

Running a filtering DNS server like Pi-hole gives you interesting insights. One of them is how often Sonos "phones home" with your usage information. And that is if you have data collection turned off:

I perfectly understand how ad servers are tracking people on the net. How does that work for Sonos? Are we the customer or the product?

You pick out the Sonos one but your top 10’s majority of entries are product telemetry:)
Building software that runs predominantly on some client, if you actually want the product to become better, the demand for client telemetry is ever increasing.

But yeah, a turn-off-telemetry button seems to be the software analog to the close-door elevator button.

Any idea what it sends?

Client telemetry I hear.

Fun fact: I noticed those dns requests to msmetrics.ws.sonos.com myself, remembered this article but guess what: I had already disabled the sharing of usage data...
