Monthly security updates for BlackBerry Mobile
by Volker Weber
I just checked the security status for all three BlackBerry Mobile smartphones:
- BlackBerry KEY2: Android 8.1.0, 1. July 2018
- BlackBerry Motion: Android 8.1.0, 1. July 2018
- BlackBerry KEYone: Android 7.1.1, 6. June 2018
No monthly updates in August. KEYone is now three months old.

If you only had one phone, how many months would have to go by without a security update before you decided that it had to be immediately replaced?
If I only had one phone, it would be an iPhone, which does not have this problem.
Is this just to prove that Blackberry can't keep up with Android (security) updates or is there really still a market for Blackberry phones? I'd rather be interested if your Nokia 7 has current updates.
I think BlackBerry Android development is stretched to thin. It was right-sized when they only had the Priv, but now there are way to many phones and SKUs.
The Nokia gets prompt updates within the month. I am currently on the Android 9 beta, so I cannot tell you about August.
Volker, do you know when Android 9 will be officially rolled out for the Android One devices such as the Nokia 7+? I was under the (apparently wrong) impression that Android One would guarantee OS upgrades on the same day they are made available to the Pixel phones.
Nokia will release Android 9 on all their Android One devices, starting with the 7 Plus this month.
Excellent, thank you!
