Path is going away. Other social networks will follow.

by Volker Weber

I was a huge fan of Path, up until they copied from Facebook. The same happened to Instagram. Many other services like Path are also doomed, because of Facebook. I used Ello for a while, as well as Vero. But they are all bound to fail. The only thing that had a chance was Google+, but we know where that went.

If Stewart Butterfield hadn't sold Flickr to Yahoo, we would all be in a better place.

Smugmug is a good home for Flickr - they know how to treat their user community right.

Possibly. But if Stewart had kept Flickr out of Yahoo, there would be no Facebook.

The question isn't really whether there would be a Facebook, I would say, but whether there would be a dominant player. There's always been somewhat of a tendency in high tech towards first consolidation and next domination, and it seems more pronounced in social networks where the "place to be" is not just about technology but about social dynamics. Given all that, wasn't a Facebook fairly inevitable? Even if it disappeared today, wouldn't we be likely to have a new dominant social network within a decade?

Räumst Du dem “Fediverse” irgendeinen Hauch einer Chance ein?

Yeah! You are dead right on Flickr! I hated that step so much, i imediately deleted my account.
