Why you should probably get the Xr

by Volker Weber

Let's get this out of the way first: the iPhone Xs is the best iPhone that Apple ever made. Whether you prefer the Xs or the Xs Max is your personal preference. If you have the money to spend, you should get an Xs.

However, if you want to play it smart, you should probably get the Xr. You won't get the telephoto lens, you won't get an OLED display, but my guess is that you will miss neither one. In return you get to save at least 250 and you will have better battery life. Don't trust the specs on paper. The LCD is fantastic, and whether it is full HD or almost full HD, let alone quad HD does not matter at all. Watch the video above for some folks choosing the Xr display over a pretty good 1080p display. And they really tried picking the best one. Caveat: they did not pick Xr over Xs. Side by side, the Xs wins. But if you just hold the Xr in your hand, it's fantastic.

And this is again a personal taste: I think the Xr looks way better than an Xs. Plus, it makes you look smarter.

My daughters new and shiny Red XR is the best looking phone I have ever seen. Except the Silver edition Passport.

I have a theory about the Passport Silver Edition. It was supposed to be the Porsche Design P'9984, but then they pulled the plug and BlackBerry sold it as the Silver Edition.

I was going for the Xr but after reading a lot and finally going to the apple store to check against Xs Max and my 8+ I finally went for the Xs Max. The missing ability to use portrait mode on anything else than what the AI thinks is a face is a big disadvantage. But the bummer was the missing Tele lens. I wasn’t expecting that because I didn’t feel like I was using it a lot but as I use the portrait mode a lot, this is the focal length that is used in the end. Making bokeh pics with the wide angle isn’t good enough for me.
The picture quality is great in all of them though, had a hard time finding differences with normal lighting in the store.

Well, there is something the Xs cannot do: portraits in low light. You need the wide angle lens to do that, and Xs can only shoot portraits with the telephoto lens. The result is that indoor portraits are actually better on Xr than Xs.

It's complicated. :-)

Volker Weber, 2018-11-03

It is really complicated, indeed. Xs can not do lowlight portraits - but Xr only can do portrait mode on real human portraits (faces) - no portrait mode on dog, cat, things or even on a complete person. That Xs is using the f2.4 tele for portraits is something out of the software - maybe some third party photo apps will change that in near future, if this is really something that makes a difference to enough user. On the other hand the portrait limitation on Xr is a software thing too - so same hope for third party apps which will solve that - or maybe in a later IOS Update. (can someone have a look into his crystal ball for what will happen?)

Out of my current provider contract extension I've got offers for XR 256GB for 549€ and XSmax 256GB 945€ - 400€ difference ... or in other words, buy the XR and Watch4 for the same price of a XS max ... guess that would be something like "Vowes advice" here ;o).

Correct. ;-)

P.S was interessiert mich mein Geschwätz von gestern.
