Ute also tried today. 24 flights climbed! And a 1 km outdoor run? That was auto-discovered while taking out the dog first thing in the morning.

Did you make the first week?

Yes!

Armin Auth, 2019-01-06

Yes! But I think the Apple Watch 4 is counting faster than the series 1.

Guido Küster, 2019-01-06

Yep!

Jan Timm, 2019-01-06

Yes. But there is still some holiday-related excess belly that I carry around with me during exercise...

Unfortunatelly I had to learn the hard way that an apple watch needs an iphone - or would be useless. A Samsung Watch works with an iphone so I had assumed an apple watch would do the same vice versa with a samsung phone. But I did not wanna let an apple watch change my complete mobile phone eco system cause I'm happy with android and prefer the freedom and benefits of sd cards and access to the filesystem which I need cause I still have a lot of "unconnected times (cellar) / areas" with no 3G or 4G connection.

So I am back in my old circus of a Samsung Gear S2 which I might upgrade to a S3 or a Samsung Watch, cause the S2 is somewhat limited to a simple pedometer beyond a few exercises every couple hours. But not much damage cause I had sold the watch instantly last year before that apple announcement came this week, OK I sold it just a week ago.

Meanwhile my SONOS stuff arrived and I learned another lesson. I consider now to buy a "cheap old iphone" as "an APPLE ECOSYSTEM ACCESS DEVICE or CONNECTOR" to
* measure my new Sonos Ones and to
* connect my next apple watch to the apple ecosystem

Hope that the watch doesn't need the iphone presence a lot cause I do not wanna use it actively. The new / future EKG function is what I need the apple watch for - mostly as a preparation for my pretty old father and "proud owner" of multiple bypasses for over 20 years who is already on android and feels himself too old to move to an iphone.

The only other apple thing I liked a lot had been itunes with its dynamic lists and coding the mp3 tags 14 years ago when I got my first 2 ipods - which still work fine with their first batteries after they got the last major update, part of apple's sales problem or environment friendly strategy of long useable products. Except an old stereo I can not remember any device I use bought in 2006 or before except a mostly "unused" PS4.

But my current question: What iphone shall I buy for the simple jobs of a "sonos sound optimizer" and an "apple watch connector" ?

Johann Görken, 2019-01-06

Leider Montag verpasst, weil ich schlicht zu blöd war. Dienstag gestartet, also am 1.1.

Markus Kriesten, 2019-01-06

Johann, all your assumptions are wrong. You cannot use an Apple Watch without an iPhone. It does not make any sense. If you want to measure your Sonos system, and it is very much worth to do that, ask a friend to come over and do it for you.

Volker Weber, 2019-01-06

Yes, started well also. But what is Ute’s secret to using the autodetection of workouts? This persistently fails on me. Very rarely does it detect anything, if so, it usually rather late (about 5 minutes into the activity) and I have to actually confirm that the detection is correct and the workout should be recorded. Especially in the current weather conditions, where the watch is under two or three layers of sleeves, this is not really practical, let alone user-friendly. Does that get better over time if the watch learns? Do I need to change a setting somewhere?

Yes!
not on Apple Watch though, but on Stepz for iOS - another one of your great recommendations Volker.

Your posts are a great motivation! Thank you!

Axel Borschbach, 2019-01-07

Ragnar, no secrets. Everything is set to default. She was surprised the watch did that.

Volker Weber, 2019-01-07

Does the autodetect actually start the workout for her or does she tap to confirm the detection and start recording?

Ragnar Schierholz , 2019-01-07

Ja, hat geklappt.

Thomas Felsch, 2019-01-07

Ragnar, everything on default, as documented: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204523

Volker Weber, 2019-01-07

Detlev Poettgen, 2019-01-07

Natürlich. Gelernt ist gelernt.

Sven Richert , 2019-01-07

I’m here, finally. While on the subject, have you seen whitings announcements at CES?

Vitor Pereira, 2019-01-08

Yes, I did. What did you find notable?

Volker Weber, 2019-01-08

Only the “ECG” stuff, which you probably already knew about?

Vitor Pereira, 2019-01-08

Yes, I did. I tested a Withings watch in the past, and it wasn't enough to earn the space on my wrist. I do like the blood pressure monitor and the scales.

Volker Weber, 2019-01-08

Yes, I have a scale, bp monitor and a steel (not HR). Did you test the new withings watch with ECG? I know what you mean by not earning space on your wrist, you need more from it than I do. I like the simplicity and the so far 14 month battery.

Vitor Pereira, 2019-01-08

Wow. 14 month - that's fantastic. No, I did not have a chance to look at it, and probably won't. Ever since Apple Watch I have given up on the other watches and trackers.

Volker Weber, 2019-01-08
