Lenovo vs Apple laptops

by Volker Weber

Makes you go "doh". Function should always beat looks. The current Apple laptop keyboard's reliability is nowhere near where it should be. I wonder what would happen if he tried the slicker Yoga C930. This is what you get for 1999 €:

The Yoga i5/8/256/FHD lists for 1499 €. There are some pretty good notebooks out there now. Not only from Lenovo.

I love the current keyboard. Super precise.

At home I use an external keyboard from Apple and the contrast could not be harder. I feel kind of becoming sea sick when punching into the keys on the traditional sponge like keyboard.

If nothing else it demonstrates the essential futility of the immediate, hot-off-the-press review of new items as they appear - stock in trade of many tech blogs, and virtually all paper magazines.

You are always careful to live with a product for a little while before telling us about it (and deciding whether the reviewer wants to give it back). A great many reviewers do not take that care - conducting cursory tests on a new bit of technology over the course of 24 hours is no substitute for spending real time with it - and keyboard fails tend not to happen in the course of a single day.

Mariano, I agree with you on the short throw keys. That is why the current crop of iPad Pro, Yoga or Surface keyboards work much better for me than the old Apple Magic Keyboard attached to my iMac, or my MacBook Pro for that matter. But I am talking about reliability here. The butterfly keyboard is great until it isn't.

Nick, I also do my "first impressions", but yes, I like to use things for extended periods. That is why I ask agencies to not send me something with the idea they get it back in two weeks. They can get it back in two days, but then they cannot earn a recommendation. Or they let me use stuff for longer periods.

When I was looking for a new laptop, the keyboard issue is what stopped me from looking into a MacBook. I've been using one at work and I liked it, so I was looking into buying one for myself. Then, I had the keyboard issue on my laptop. The b, n and m key often typed duplicate which was unbelievably annoying. The MacBook was maybe seven (!!) months old when this started to happen.
By the way, I liked the feel of the keyboard, except the noise. That was not the problem.

Later in 2018 I was confirmed again that this was the right decision when I heard about the issues with the flex cable (that I didn't have myself).
And the ridiculous repair prices once you are out of warranty!
Not for something I have to pay myself ...

That means you are now out of warranty. :-)

I'm a big fan of Lenovo these days. I am very pleased with a Thinkpad T440 and an Ideapad 720S which I have - the T440 was second hand for 400 Euro on eBay and I swapped the keyboard for a Spanish one, took about 20 minutes (would be quicker ow I know how to do it).

Volker, laut Deinem Link hat es Touch.

Danke für den Hinweis. Korrigiert.

There was a long period in which Mac hardware was very expensive. It may have been very good but the price was prohibitive (at least for me, probably many others as well, I remember 10k DM b/w Macs at the time). In comparison PCs became very affordable.
After falling behind PC performance in the late G4/G5 era they switched first to OS X (G4 time I believe) and then to the Intel platform. From that time I felt the MacBooks and MBP had great quality, performance and price/performance ratio.
Since around the Touchbar I feel that ratio is declining. You now get competing PCs that have interesting features (touch), great build (i.e. Surface line, Razer Blade) that make them appealing just like the metal body MacBooks were.

At home I use a 5 year old MBP that I still love.
When I need to replace my MBP I would like to get a recent one. But I started thinking that a PC is the better option at this time.
Btw. my work issued Thinkpad T450 has developed cracks in the case, one close to the hinge. So I hesitate to swap a MBP for a TP for private use.

@Volker

Was Qualität, Style & Preisleistung angeht.

12.3" Display, 2400x1600
7th gen Intel Core i7 (aka Kaby Lake, i7-7Y75)
512GB SSD (NVMe)
16GB RAM (DDR4)
