The current state of smart speakers
by Volker Weber
Very good analysis of the current state of voice control in a thread that Walt Mosberg started. It reflects my own use. John is a co-founder and former CEO of Sonos.
Alexa is mostly a kitchen timer and displays a couple of our favorite photos as a photo frame on Echo Show. Google Assistant is disabled on all devices.
We are using Siri more than ever. It is also shifting my speaker use from Sonos to HomePod. I hardly ever touch the Sonos controller anymore. Play:5 and PlayBase have become an AirPlay target that cannot be controlled via Siri.
Voice just isn't very compelling yet.

I had a couple of Sonos devices but have Google home mini and Chromecast in more rooms, the ease at which I can control them with my voice or from any of our families phones tablets or laptops makes it very compelling, even my 3 year old daughter can ask for a song. I have now sold the Sonos. Now looking into smart lighting but don't get why it's so expensive, I don't want to pay a fortune for a bulb that will need replacing.
Makes total sense if you want to hand everything about you to Google.
With my S5 AirPlay doesn’t work properly unfortunately.
What usually happens is, that the music will first transfer, then not play. If you switch back to the device “it has played though”. It doesn’t pause while it is not playing. And yes. Volume is turned up. ;)
Any suggestions to fix it?
Erklär mal auf deutsch. Vielleicht verstehe ich es dann besser.
Let's put the privacy aspect aside for this short feature comparison.
Ask the Google Assistant in german "Hey Google, wie groß ist eine Bierbank" and then try this with Siri.
The quality of the Google answer is a million times more useful than the Siri one!
I'm a Apple Fanboy and all, but Siri isn't near the Google expierence at all, at least in german.
I can't compare but I am totally satisfied with my Alexa/Sonos combo. Also appreciating more and more functions of Alexa. Siri is used just accidentally on my phone ;)...
Privacy for me with a Teenage Daughter is a big issue. There is no way I can restrict who can play music on a Google Play Device. I can be happily listening to Daft Punk and all of a sudden I am rick rolled. What Devices allow access control on the endpoint speaker ?
Andy, I suggest you enroll her phone into an MDM service. You will wield veto power over everything. "You rickroll me, I ground you."
You're right, Volker, Siri is getting better and better, and Apple's ecosystem is rocking. They are playing the long game and it seems to be working.
And with iOS 13, HomePod will support multiple users. I'll be curious to see how that works, in addition to how the privacy aspects are handled.
Another fun fact: Here in the US, Target has just started selling the HomePod for $199 USD.
