USB-C :: It's always the cable

How many kinds of USB-C™ to USB-C™ cables are there?

Fun fact: a client killed both right and left side USB Type-C ports on his MacBook Pro and couldn’t charge the battery. He had the logic board replaced under warranty, then killed the right side ports again.

He was using Apple chargers and USB cables—so he thought.

Turns out somebody must have traded cables with him without telling him. The cable was a cheap knock-off and was shorting out the ports. And I thought USB ports were supposed to be fully self-limiting.
