Apple Watch Series 5 battery drain :: It's the always-on display

Battery performance on the Watch Series 5 wasn't what I was expecting. Yes, it could get through an 18 hours day, and you should be sleeping more than 6 hours, but barely so. I ran into a low battery warning once. Which never happened with previous watches.
I tried a few suggested things like turning off the noise monitoring feature but that did not change anything. But turning off the Always-On display feature made a huge difference. Now I was able to get through the whole day with about half the battery capacity, like I was able before. It's actually not a surprise. Try as they might, Apple still has to power some sort of display where it would go to sleep completely.
But this is not the only factor. It also depends on how bright your surroundings are. In dim light, or when Watch is covered by your sleeve, it will dim way down, using even less energy. When I was burning through a full charge in 18 hours, I was mostly outside with short sleeves. I think this is just the beginning of an optimization process. This situation will improve. And if you need your battery to last more than a day, just switch off the Always-On feature in Settings/Display, right on your watch or inside the Watch app on iPhone.

Does it still turn on when you raise your hand? Would this still be necessary with an always-on display?
It behaves like all prior Apple Watches. It turns on when your raise your wrist or touch the screen. Only the off state is different. Instead of turning completely dark, it goes into a power saving mode where it redraws the screen only once a minute, does not refresh more than once a second and lights fewer pixels.
OK. But perhaps this behavior can be disabled now because you always can see the time.
Raising your wrist detection can be switched off for all generations.

The feature which makes you buy the Watch 5 in the first place, should probably be switched off, to get a satisfactory battery life.
I forsee a lot of people exactly doing this. At least I would for sure.
Which makes me a lot more comfortably staying at Watch 4.
There are reports that the new watchOS 6.1 Beta have resolved the battery drain issues with Always On enabled. Unfortunately the known issues list that some of the new watch faces are not included in the beta.
OK, Leute, vielleicht drücke ich mich auf Englisch nicht gut genug aus. Dass das automatische Anschalten der Uhr beim Heben der Hand schon immer verfügbar ist, ist klar. Es ist aber bei den bisherigen Modellen nur notwendig, weil der Screen ja in der Regel aus ist. Das passiert bei mir sehr häufig unabsichtlich, aber manchmal auch nicht rechtzeitig. Wenn die Uhrzeit aber auf der Series 5 eh immer zu sehen ist, braucht man das doch gar nicht mehr. Also könnte man es jetzt deaktivieren, um Strom zu sparen. Wenn man mit der Uhr interagieren möchte, tippt man dann eh drauf oder dreht am Rad.
Naja es ist nicht das Gleiche. Wenn das Display nur jede Minute aktualisiert wird, dann sind eben viele Dinge NICHT möglich. Bestes Beispiel: Radfahren. Ich nutze meine Garmin quasi als Tacho bzw. kontrolliere dabei auch Puls. Die Apple Watch war für diesen Use Case quasi untauglich wie auch für viele andere Sportarten wo man eben nicht sein Armgelenk schütteln kann. Oder eben eine Uhr benötigt die ganztägig GPS Daten aufzeichnet (Wandern, Skifahren, Radfahren, Segeln usw.).
Trotz allem ist das Always-On Display der neuen Airwatch für mich ein Gamechanger. Hätte es das schon im Frühjahr gegeben, ich hätte mir den Kauf der Garmin Fenix wohl überlegt. Schon allein aus stilistischen Gründen fand ich das Tragen einer Uhr am Handgelenk die nichts permanent anzeigt, ziemlich doof.
Oliver, habe dich schon verstanden. Dein Englisch ist gut genug. Ich habe mich vielleicht unklar ausgedrückt.
Ich probiere deine Anregung mal, aber schon nach einer Stunde gefällt sie mir nicht besonders. Apple ist aber dran an dem Thema und optimiert weiter. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass es schon bald ein neues Release gibt, was da nachbessert.
