by Volker Weber

Today we are super pleased to announce another milestone in the Surface journey with the release of a major new form factor.

Unveiled today and shipping September 10, Surface Duo represents the next wave of mobile productivity, inspiring people to rethink what is possible with the device in their pocket. Surface Duo delivers the easiest way to multitask on the go, bringing together the power of Microsoft 365 experiences and the full ecosystem of Android mobile apps. Starting at $1,399, Surface Duo opens into the thinnest mobile device on the market with an 8.1" PixelSense Fusion display connected by a revolutionary 360-degree hinge, allowing you to use each 5.6" display individually or together, across a variety of modes. Do more wherever you are with Surface Duo

I bet the Techtubers will focus on refresh rates, chipsets and bezels.

Some Techtubers give more nuanced look on devices. I hope MKBHD and/or "iPhonedo" can make for this device a nice review video.

Or is there an other good techtuber out there "prädestiniert" for this kind of device to review?

Matthias Welling, 2020-08-12

They can make a nice video. But will they be able to "see" it?

Volker Weber, 2020-08-12

Interesting device with a heavy price point.

Ingo Seifert, 2020-08-12

We don't even know how much it will be around here.

Volker Weber, 2020-08-12

Who cares about chipset or refresh rates. But, a good camera is important! Panay said: "it will have a great camera", whatever "great" means…...

Roland Dressler, 2020-08-12

I see $1,399 right now. That is heavy.

Ingo Seifert, 2020-08-12

Well, go to the Microsoft Store and compare US and DE prices for other products. Surface Pro X for business starts from $1100 and 1250 €.

Volker Weber, 2020-08-12

$ without VAT, € with VAT - isn't that the case usually?

Philipp Lammers, 2020-08-12

Here is your exercise: What will be the price for a Surface Duo in €?

Volker Weber, 2020-08-12

Usually they are similar. 1USD = 0,85€ + german tax. Maybe a bit less since corona tax reduction..

Roland Dressler, 2020-08-12

“I believe these prices will make it a non-starter for anyone other than Microsoft Surface superfans.“ - not my words but Mary Jo Foley‘s (Source: https://www.zdnet.com/article/surface-duo-microsofts-1400-dual-screen-android-phone-coming-september-10/)

I am a Surface fan but I am not sure I am able to "see" it. I was initially more intrigued by the Surface Neo with two 9 inch screens that fold into a 13.1 inch notebook. That's a larger display than the Surface Pro in an ultraportable format. The Duo with its two 5.6 inch screens folding into a 8.1 inch tablet - I am not sure what I would need this for. Our phones have grown so much in recent years and our notebooks like the Surface Pro have become so powerful that there is no space left in between as far as I am concerned. The Duo reminds me a bit of the iPad Mini that has been outgrown by the phones with 6 inch screens and larger.

Jochen Kattoll, 2020-08-12

Having said that I think the Duo is a great innovative product that points into the future. I believe foldable devices will become mainstream. If I were a commuter sitting in the London tube for two hours every day I would love to have such a device. But even then I think I'd rather go with a bigger version like the Neo which would still be super portable.

Android Enterprise oder nur für Consumer?

Thomas Mendorf, 2020-08-12

Nice, probably well engineered hardware.

As a phone replacement I think it is way too unwieldy. As an alternative to a tablet, I do not see any advantage, except that you may do without a screenprotecting case.
Maybe I‘m wrong, but I believe this to be the same niche product like foldable screen phones.

Something like 3D TV‘s. Once hyped, now nobody talks about that any longer..

Sven Bühler, 2020-08-12

I like it a lot. If it lasts a day on a single charge, even more. And if it delivers what I see, it is a single advice incl. the phone. Only for Skype/teams? Or is that Microsoft’s latest all in one 5G phone?
