New toys coming up: G1, EVA, E75, and more

I am currently on a conference tour speaking about mobile security. And I have one blind spot: Google Android. I have to tell the audience that I basically know nothing about Android from first hand experience. As it happens, Google is one of our conference sponsors, and I just got notice, that in two weeks time, I will have a G1 to play with.

The EVA 9150 I talked about last week is also en route to vowe's magic flying circus. ETA is tomorrow via UPS. I could have picked it up yesterday but then would have needed to lug it all the way to Darmstadt on the train. I am really curious how this box will compare to my EVA 8000.

No sign of the E75 yet.

If Fedex delivers the package I could not receive yesterday, I will also be testing some undisclosed hardware/software today that I was very much looking forward to. If all goes well, it could be a product this quarter. And no, it's not from Sonos. ;-)

I suppose it's a shame it won't be a G1.5. :-)

Well, it might be... ;-)

I hope my hopes are not premature... ;-)

Did you hear any news about the palm pre? Its been really quiet about this thing...

Michael Klüsener, 2009-04-29

Cool stuff, looking forward to your insights, I was about to upgrade my E61i with a E71, but now I'm wondering if I should rather go for the E75.

Joel Demay, 2009-04-29

Stefan and Michael, there is no news on the Pre, especially on the GSM/UMTS version. No carrier, no device. They should be launching on Sprint this quarter, but nothing for Europe at this point.

Joel, I have compared the E71 and E75 side by side, and I clearly like the E71 hardware better. The E75 should have a newer Symbian version though, and that may be the point.

I started using the G1 in December and was not all that happy with how it looked (the lack of polish on the device and OS level). Secretly I was yearning for my iPhone. But when
using my iPhone again for a day last month, I realized that I don't want to go back.
I really love the G1's keyboard and the hard buttons. I feel very constrained now by the lack of buttons on the iPhone and that I can just run one app at a time.

The iPhone is much better in terms of battery life and as a media player though. The latter is just integrated much smoother into the OS. Oh the irony - none of Android's hard buttons can be used to control the media player (as of now). If you want to stop music playback you have to go to the media player app ;(

@Jan-Piet TMO announced to roll out 1.5/Cupcake from the end of May on.

The iPhone is much better in terms of battery life

Now that sounds scary. The iPhone so far has the worst battery performance of all my devices.

Exactly my thoughts. The battery life of the iPhone is really a weak point, and if the G1 is worse, that leaves a lot to fear.

Dirk Steins, 2009-04-30

It is.

The iPhone 3G seems to have a 1600 mAh
battery and the G1's battery only has 1050 mAh.

I use an aftermarket 2300mAh battery and I "only" need to charge the phone at night. I have to say though that I use my phone very frequently and over long periods of time.

Of course, it's not the usage as a phone that drains the battery.

And it's nice that you can charge the G1 over USB.

Mariano Kamp, 2009-04-30

Grmpfh, 1150 mAh ...

Mariano Kamp, 2009-04-30

Well, the good point of course for the G1 is that you CAN swap the battery by yourself, so you just have to lug a spare one around, and you can buy aftermarket batteries with higher capacity. Try that with an iPhone. But i still love my iPhone.
