Netcraft Web Server Survey

by Volker Weber

Survey

"The number of sites found to be vulnerable by our tests peaked at over 60% in June, and shows how ripe the internet was for Code Red. The significant fall since shows the combined impact of Code Red and Microsoft's first cumulative security patch. One would expect that Microsoft is delighted at the success of the cumulative patch, but disappointed that a significant minority of the Microsoft-IIS community is still likely to be very exposed, as some 1 in 10 of the ecommerce and encrypted transactions sites tested by us had backdoors in place to allow external attackers to monitor the systems, or have commands executed on the machines. O'Reilly Network: The Best of 2001

by Volker Weber

Editors' Picks: The Best of 2001 [Dec. 21, 2001]

Over the past 12 months, as technology's economic engine slowed to a crawl, we kept our ears to the track.

We wrote about the fall of Napster and the rise of its clones, the resurgence of Apple with Mac OS X, the continuing success of XML and Java, the expansion of 802.11b, and the contraction of Linux on the desktop.

These are just a few topics from the past that will shape the future. So in the spirit of year-end reflection and the notion that history is a great teacher, here's a look back at some of our favorite articles from 2001.

Design Not Found

by Volker Weber

The Best and Worst of Contingency Design (design for when things go wrong)

Online frustration lurks at every click. "This isn't what I searched for." "Did my order go through?" "How do I get out of here?" "Where is the page I clicked on?" Too often surfers wind up feeling lost, confused, or helpless.

Contingency design, a field pioneered by 37signals, is the solution. Design Not Found displays real-world examples of good and bad contingency design. It's the perfect way to learn more about how various sites communicate with visitors when things go wrong.

Anyone involved in building web sites, including designers, programmers, copywriters, information architects, and other decision makers, will find valuable lessons for helping visitors survive worst-case scenarios.

A short guide to doing JavaScript pop-up windows properly

by Volker Weber

Specify your pop-up function in the href attribute instead of the onclick attribute. If you must use the onclick attribute, specify "javascript://" in the href attribute, not "#" because that will take you to the top of the page, a behavior which is not intended or appreciated by the Web user.

Preferred**: <a href="foo.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return
false;">
Good: <a href="javascript:PopUp()">link</a>
Good: <a href="javascript://" onclick="PopUp()">link</a>
Bad bad: <a href="#" onclick="PopUp()">link</a>

** Milo writes in with an even better method of doing pop-ups: <a href="foo.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">. Benefits include non-JS browser compatibility and shift/right click compatibility.

Eclipse Project FAQ has been released

by Volker Weber

eclipse project FAQ

The Eclipse Project is an open source software development project dedicated to providing a robust, full-featured, commercial-quality, industry platform for the development of highly integrated tools. It is composed of three subprojects, Platform, JDT - Java development tools, and PDE - Plug-in development environment. The success of the Eclipse Platform depends on how well it enables a wide range of tool builders to build best of breed integrated tools. But the real vision of eclipse as an industry platform is only realized if these tools from different tool builders can be combined together by users to suit their unique requirements, in ways that the tool builders never even imagined. The mission of the Eclipse Project is to adapt and evolve the Eclipse Platform and associated tools to meet the needs of the tool building community and its users, so that the vision of eclipse as an industry platform is realized.

Inside the Lotus Discovery Server

by Volker Weber

New IBM Redbook

The Lotus Discovery Server is a knowledge server. It provides search and expertise location solutions designed to ensure that the relevant knowledge and collective experience of an organization is readily available to help individuals and teams solve everyday business problems.

In this IBM Redbook, we describe how to set up a successful Discovery Server implementation in an organization. We show you how to begin the project by looking at and sorting through the information you already have, how to install a pilot system you can use to learn how Discovery Server works with your information, and how to design your system to work effectively across multiple servers. We also touch on how this complex product works under the covers.

The Discovery Server extracts, analyzes and categorizes structured and unstructured information, revealing the relationships between content, people, topics and user activity in an organization. It automatically generates and maintains a Knowledge map (K-map) to display relevant content categories and their appropriate hierarchical mapping, which can easily be searched or browsed by users. It also generates and maintains user profiles and tracks relevant end-user activities, identifying individuals who may be subject matter experts. The Discovery Server uncovers organizational know-how.

Fun of the day alert:

by Volker Weber

Hi Volker,

I found your site through a recent search of "vowe" on Google. Since you obviously have some association with the term, I thought you might be interested in buying a domain name I recently acquired: Vowe.com.

As you may know, four-letter .com domain names (especially when they're pronounceable, like Vowe.com) are extremely hard to find. Since it's so short, easy to remember, and a ".com" domain, www.Vowe.com would make a great home for your current web site. Alternatively, you could simply use it as a redirect URL to http://www.vowe.de/ so people can find your site more easily. If you're interested, please e-mail me at acarroll@tuckferrorism.com with an offer or with any questions you might have.

Thanks. I appreciate your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Der Engel und der Weihnachtsmann

by Volker Weber
