WhatsApp is back in the Windows Phone App Store

A few weeks ago, WhatsApp was disappeared from the Windows Phone Store, reappeared, then was pulled, because there was a notification issue on 8.0 Update 3. Now it has been fixed and the app is again available for download. There are a few new features, and they aren't supported yet on 8.1. This is a developing story.
PLAY:1 replacement cables

The SONOS PLAY:1 draws power from a standard power lead. Unfortunately however, there is very little space where the cable enters the device from the bottom. So you cannot just use any cable. It needs a bespoke plug to make it fit. I am sure there have been many discussions how the PLAY:1 can be powered from below, on a stand, or from above, when suspended from the ceiling. After all, the SONOS logo looks the same upside down.
The downside is that you cannot buy a replacement cable in a hardware store, if you want a different color or a different length. Since SONOS ships the same color for the device and the cable, I was running a white cable over a black floor. Not good enough.
The good news is that the SONOS shop has power cables for all devices. And they have both white and black ones. Problem solved.

The App Gap

As much as I like my Lumia 1020, it becomes impractical when you want to use accessories that do not come with a Windows Phone app. It's not about the big name apps from Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat et. al. For Windows Phone, Rudy Huyn has developed lots of apps covering those. It's the smaller startups that can afford an iPhone app. And an Android app. Once they have developed those, they are covering most of the market.
This is the real app gap. And the reason I am currently using the iPhone with my UP24.

[Falls das irgendjemand bei der Telekom liest, der von irgendwas eine Ahnung hat und auch was machen kann: die Ticketnummer ist 169495202.]
Seit Samstag kein Internet. Jetzt war der Techniker da.
Sehr netter Typ. Kommt rein, steckt sein Prüfgerät in die Dose. Ergebnis: 1a DSL, Anmeldung geht nicht. Also genau das, was ich immer wieder der Telekom erzählte. Dann sind wir zum Outdoor-DSLAM gedackelt. Dort das selbe Problem. Und bei der Nachbarin, der heute die Hotline einen neuen Router empfohlen hat, ebenfalls das selbe Fehlerbild.
Techniker setzt den Port zurück, auch das hilft nicht. Die gesamte Baugruppe im Outdoor-DSLAM muss neu gestartet werden. Das darf er aber nicht. Das macht die Netztechnik. Die Versuchung war groß, denn der Netzschalter war genau vor mir. ;-)
Ergebnis: weiterhin kein Internet. Morgen. Vielleicht.
Und wieder viel gelernt:
- Der Techniker hängt in genau so einer saublöden Warteschleife wie der Kunde. "Im Augenblick sind alle unsere Berater ..."
- Bei mir war eine kostenpflichtige Heimnetzüberprüfung beauftragt. Die kostet 99,95 € und ich bin darüber nicht informiert worden.
- In der Samstagnacht ist bei meiner Baugruppe eine neue Software aufgespielt worden. Mit Ausfall. Seit dem komme ich nicht mehr ins Internet.
Der Punkt 2 ist eine bodenlose Frechheit. Den Punkt 3 hätte jeder sehen können. Statt dessen wurde ich in jedes Boxhorn gejagt. Router vom Netz trennen, Router auf Werkseinstellungen rücksetzen, etc. pp.

Die Nacht ist rum. DSL wurde nicht unterbrochen. Ein Reboot der Baugruppe ist also unwahrscheinlich. Anruf bei der Hotline. "Die Kollegen, die das prüfen können, sind erst ab 8 Uhr, äh, eigentlich ab 9 Uhr da."
Reboot der Fritz!Box. DSL ist verfügbar. PPPoE-Fehler: Zeitüberschreitung.

0800 330 1000 angerufen. Einmal alle Kundendaten aufgesagt. "Das ist an den Außendienst übergeben". - "Nein, ist es nicht. Der war schon da. Jetzt ist die Netztechnik dran". Düdeldüdeldu. Verbunden mit dem nächsten Service Center. Wieder alle Kundendaten aufgesagt. "Ich versuche mal, den Kollegen zu erreichen". Bin also immer noch nicht bei jemandem, der auch was machen kann. "Ich habe Rücksprache mit dem Kollegen gehalten. Sie werden eine weitere Meldung erhalten." - "Was heißt das?" - "Sie werden in zwei, drei Minuten unter der hinterlegten Nummer zurückgerufen."

Freundlich Dame ruft an. "Das liegt bei Technik Netze. Die haben heute eine Betriebsversammlung. Da passiert also heute nichts mehr. Aber morgen."

Erneuter Anruf bei 0800 330 1000. "Beratung". "Beschwerde". Ein ebenfalls freundlicher Mitarbeiter geht ran. Fragt alle Kundendaten ab. "Da muss ich mal Rücksprache mit der Technik halten." Düdeldüdeldu. "Guten Tag, Störungsannahme." Ganzen Sermon noch mal erzählt.
"Ja, das kam erst heute morgen um acht hier rein. Nein, das liegt bei Technik Netze. Da liegt ja eine Großstörung vor. Nein, da kann ich gar nicht anrufen."

Mir wäre schon sehr geholfen, wenn irgendjemand wenigstens einmal einen Neustart der Baugruppe versuchen würde. Wir standen davor, durften aber nicht. Wenn das nicht klappt, dann kann man ja immer noch tauschen.

Das überrascht mich jetzt nicht. Der Bautrupp ist meines Wissens nämlich nicht dran, sondern nicht da. Erst Betriebsversammlung, dann ab nach Hause.

Anruf: "Baschek, Telekom Münster. Wie sieht's aus?" - "Wie sieht was aus?" - "Na, Internet" - "Schlecht." - "Ich habe gerade die Gruppe resettet". vowe rennt in den Keller. Info-LED aus. vowe rennt nach oben. "Noch dran?" - "Ja, geht nicht." - "Moment - ich resette noch mal einen Teil." Ergebnis:
Baschek: "Ich habe gelesen 'Falls das irgendjemand bei der Telekom liest...' und habe gesagt, den Pokal holen wir jetzt nach Münster." So ist es. Dickes Dankeschön, Herr Baschek. Unkompliziert geholfen, Problem gelöst!
Das tat so unfassbar gut, mit einem coolen Techniker statt den ganzen Callcenter-Hanseln zu reden.

Der Techniker, der gestern mit mir am DSLAM war, ruft an und erkundigt sich, ob denn alles funktioniert hat. Dabei entschuldigt er sich, dass er so spät anruft. Ich erzähle ihm, dass viel passiert ist und dass ich wieder Internet habe.
Fazit
Beide Techniker waren freundlich, engagiert und arbeiteten zielführend. Die gesamte Organisation dazwischen war ebenfalls freundlich und verhinderte zuverlässig, dass diese beiden Menschen zusammen arbeiten können.

An diesem Wochenende wieder ein bisschen was gelernt:
- Router vom Strom trennen. 2 Minuten warten. Wieder einstecken. Das wird später abgefragt.
- Der Twitterkanal @Telekom_hilft muss heißen @Telekom_zwitschert.
- Laut AGB hat die Telekom 24 Stunden Zeit zum "entstören". Deshalb nicht warten. Sofort anrufen, damit die Uhr läuft: 0800 330 1000.
- Samstag passiert vielleicht was. Sonntag auf keinen Fall.
- Beim Rückruf sofort technisch werden, damit die Plaudertasche zu einem Kotzbrocken durchstellt. Der hat Ahnung, aber kein Telefontraining.
- Auch hier wieder sofort wieder aus dem Modus "welche Lampe brennt" ausbrechen, damit der Kotzbrocken Aufträge erteilt.
- Was für die Technik ganz schwer zu verstehen ist: wenn es nicht nur einen Anschluss betrifft, sondern die ganze Nachbarschaft, liegt es wahrscheinlich nicht am Kunden und dessen Router.
- "Techniker ist beauftragt und schon unterwegs" heißt "irgendwann heute, vielleicht".
- "16 bis 20 Uhr" heißt "wenn ich Feierabend habe".
- Warten. Lange warten.

Overall, the CIA concluded, IBM was a high-risk choice. In a court filing, Amazon blasted the elder company as a "late entrant to the cloud computing market" with an "uncompetitive, materially deficient proposal." A federal judge agreed, ruling in October that with the "overall inferiority of its proposal," IBM "lacked any chance of winning" the contract. The corporate cliché of the 1970s and ’80s, that no one ever got fired for buying IBM, had never seemed less true.

Jawbone UP und UP24

Als Dr. Michael Spehr seinen Langzeit-Test "3,5 Millionen Schritte und kein Fortschritt" ablieferte, wurde ich neugierig. Ich bin selbst skeptisch. Aber das Jawbone Up gefällt mir doch sehr. Also habe ich Michael gefragt, ob ich sein Gerät weiter testen darf. Und was beim Fitbit nicht geklappt hat, funktioniert beim UP. Es verändert meine Gewohnheiten.
Mittlerweile habe ich der Scheffin ein neues UP24 geschenkt und seit heute habe ich selbst auch ein UP24 für einen Langzeittest. Zwei Gründe sprachen für ein neues Band: erstens ist mir das UP in Größe M zu klein und zweitens synchronisiert das UP24 über Bluetooth LE (Low Energy). Das UP dagegen muss man regelmäßig in die Headset-Buchse einstecken, wo es der App die neuesten Daten pfeift.
Was hat mich am UP mehr motiviert als beim Fitbit? Das UP misst nicht nur Schritte sondern auch das Schlafverhalten. Und dabei habe ich herausgefunden, dass ich viel zu wenig schlafe. Nun gehe ich früher ins Bett. Und da es immer am Arm ist, erfasst es auch genauer als das Fitbit, dass ich am Gürtel trug. Einer Anweisung kann ich nicht folgen: man soll das UP nicht an der dominanten Hand tragen, also als Rechtshänder links und nicht rechts, damit es nicht zu viele kleine Bewegungen registriert. Da ich beidhändig bin, gibt es bei mir keine dominante Hand.
Anfangs hatte Jawbone große Probleme mit dem UP. Das schwarze Band gehört zur zweiten Generation und ist mehr als ein Jahr alt. Man sieht es an den Kratzern auf der Kappe und dem etwas abgewetzten Band. Ich hatte einige Fehlübertragungen (Mist, zwei Stunden mit dem Hund gelaufen, ohne Belohnung), ab und an musste ich einen Soft Reset machen, aber im Großen und Ganzen hat es gut funktioniert.
Nun also das UP24. Ich werde berichten.

Three days with the Lumia 630

Executive summary: no editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award, but a strong recommendation for an entry level smartphone.
After three days I have zero complaints. This is a very good smartphone. It looks nice, it feels nice, and it is pretty fast. Nokia stripped out all non-essentials and comes up with something that works really well. It's available now for 150 € and imagine how low it can go.
There is a long list of things it does not have: LTE, front facing camera, LED flash, camera button, most of the sensors (besides accelerometer and proximity).
And there are a few it does: clear black display, Gorilla Glass 3, microSD up to 128 GB, Bluetooth 4.0, Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 and Adreno 305, GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS.
Battery and the very bright shells are replaceable. Good stuff. And no, it does not glow in the dark.

This just in today: a spanking new Lumia 630, which ships with Windows Phone 8.1 and Nokia Cyan. Neon yellow, my least desirable choice from the range of five colors: orange, green, yellow, black and white. Orange and green are better, white is very clean and black ... is black.
Thse colors are bright, very bright. Last year's yellow is mellow compared to this material. Even brighter: the Nokia Portable Wireless Speaker MD-12.
Setup was a breeze. But 8 GB of memory is very tight. Will have to find a decent SD card if I want to keep some music on the device. At least it is expandable, unlike the high end 930.
The Lumia 630 is the first device to ship with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan. On the 1020 I just upgraded to Developer Preview 2.
I need to play with it for a little more before I can recommend it. So far it feels very snappy. And I suspect this would be the perfect phone to buy for your kids.
Some obvious corners that Nokia had to cut: no front facing camera, no flash, no camera button, on screen Windows buttons, low display resolution (800 x480), no ambient light sensor. But you will love this: replaceable battery and covers. If you buy the wrong color, just get a new cover.

Two notable changes in Sonos 5.0

Sonos has just released version 5 of their software and new beautiful controllers all around. The iOS controller is now universal. If you cannot find it from your iPad, search for the iPhone app in App Store and you will get the universal app. Two notable changes:
- You can now search across all services.
- Surround channels can now play at full volume instead of ambient.
This stuff is getting better all the time.

Netgear TREK - Extend your hotel WiFi

This is a small gadget I have been waiting for quite a while. It knows a very useful trick. Connect to a wireless LAN, and then route the traffic into its own WiFi network. When do you need that? If your hotel sells you WiFi to the tune of 15 € per day and you want to connect your computer, your phone and your tablet. So far I have been using a Belkin travel router, but that needs a wired Internet connection to share. Same goes for the Apple Airport.
The Netgear TREK borrows from the Airport design as it plugs right into your wall outlet. Its antenna flips out to give you a better signal, and it has two Ethernet ports. One for a wired Internet connection, if you have one, the other for a computer which needs a wire. Or a Sonos speaker, if that's in your bag. You can connect a USB device, either storage or a printer.
And as you travel, you can power it through your wall outlet, but it will also take a MicroUSB plug from your phone charger. Since the TREK just draws 0.7A, any 1A charger will do. Or a power bank if you are without a power outlet. Finally, if you take out the plug, you don't have to swap it for a Netgear plug that fits, but you can use any regular cable. This is how I adapt to different countries. I just happen to have those cables for the US, the UK, Switzerland, Italy and so forth.
If you click through to Flickr, you can see that the device comes preconfigured with its own SSID and WPA2 key. But I am just going to tell you, since I already changed those parameters.
Once you are connected, your computer is going to open "genie" to help you connect to the networks available. You should also connect directly to 192.168.168.1 to fix the default admin/password combination. Yes, that is verbatim. ;-)
I found it on Amazon.com for $30 (with a US plug). On Amazon.de it's 40 € and comes with EU and UK plugs.
So that is all very impressive. Any downsides? It's 2.4 GHz only, which can be very crowded. But still, this is a very likely candidate for an editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award.
Vertraulichkeit und Email

Ich werde ab Donnerstag wieder eine Vortragsreihe bei Heise Security, diesmal zum Thema Email-Vertraulichkeit halten. Ich habe meine eigenen Gedanken, was so funktioniert, und vor allem, was nicht funktioniert. Aber ich würde gerne wissen, was Ihr so macht in Eurem Unternehmen, um die Vertraulichkeit von Emails zu verbessern, insbesondere im Spannungsfeld mit mobilen Geräten. Das muss nicht als Kommentar sein. Gerne auch als Email.

Microsoft simply cannot afford to stop supporting XP

Microsoft blinked.
There is an Internet Explorer exploit in the wild and Microsoft has provided a fix. Not only for supported versions of Windows, but also for XP. This is exactly what I expected to happen when Microsoft announced EOL for XP. Microsoft simply cannot afford leaving Windows vulnerable. It would damage the brand.
Many years ago, Microsoft insisted that Internet Explorer is part of Windows. That was a bad idea.
