Opt out of ad-tracking on iOS 6
by Volker Weber
Up to version 5 of iOS advertisers track you by the UDID, which identifies your device. With iOS 6 Apple has reacted to critics and created a new ad tracking system. And deep deep deep inside your settings app it has hidden a slider that lets you opt out of being tracked.
If your language is set to English, go to Settings/General/About, scroll all the way down and select Advertising. In that panel you find one obscure switch christened Limit Ad Tracking. Slide this switch to on.
Auf Deutsch heißt dieser Pfad Einstellungen/Allgemein/Info/Werbung/Ad-Tracking beschränken.
If you are reading this page on your iOS 6 device, simply go to https://oo.apple.com/.

Nokia bringt "My Commute" als "Meine Strecken" nach Deutschland
by Volker Weber
Sehr cool.
Kleines dickes iPhone
by Volker Weber
by Volker Weber
Taugt nix. Kann man im Internet lesen. Stimmt also.

Saving Android From a Second-Rate Future
by Volker Weber
So unless your phone says “Nexus” on it, you’re not running true Android. And Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, for example, accounts for just 0.5 percent of the smartphone market. It’s a safe bet that there are more people using jailbroken iPhones than Nexus phones. If I were a Google engineer who’d poured his time and effort into the beautiful Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, I’d be pissed.
Kleiner Ausflug
by Volker Weber
Editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award.
Nachtrag - tolles Feedback:

Voyager Pro and Legend
by Volker Weber
The Voyager Pro has found its master: the Voyager Legend. I find it superior, in all but one aspect. Both headsets share a similar design. While the Legend is supposed to be smaller, I really can't see that this is the case.
The most obvious changes are that the microphone boom is thinner, and the switches on the back have gone from push buttons to sliders. I like both changes, especially the sliders. It's much easier to operate behind the ear. I have always struggled a bit with the volume buttons. The other important changes are on the boom. The call button is no longer on the side of the boom. It moved to the back of the boom where it is better protected against accidental touches. And there is a new mute button under the boom. This lets you mute the microphone during a call or pause/play music playback.
Source: Plantronics
This button also serves as a trigger for voice commands. The Legend knows quite a few such commands: "Am I connected?" "Answer" "Call information" "Call Vocalyst" "Cancel" "Check battery" "Ignore" "Pair mode" "Redial" "What can I say". And there are voice prompts that are whispered in your ear: "Power on/off" "Answering call" "Talk-time (x) hours""Battery low" "Recharge headset" "Lost connection" "Phone 1 connected/Phone 2 connected" "Pairing" "Pairing incomplete, restart headset" "Mute on/off""Volume maximum/minimum" "Voice recognition on/off" "Redialing last outgoing call". There you have it, a headset that talks to you instead of blinking LEDs. It does not have to speak English. The available languages are Cantonese, English U.K., French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. Way over my head.
What am I not liking? Instead of a MicroUSB port, the headset now sports dock contacts. That means you have to carry a special cable with a USB plug at the other end. The headset comes with USB chargers for your car and a wall outlet, but you probably have plenty of those. I left them in the box. Come to think of it, the accessories included already amount to half of the price for the whole set.
You may want to have the Voyager Legend Case, which not only stores the headset but also charges it from a secondary battery. Twice actually. And that does seem to have a MicroUSB port. The case will be bundled with the UC variant of the Legend. It will also include a prepaired Bluetooth plug which hels using the headset with a phone and your PC at the same time.
Why would you get a Voyager instead of an M55 which is considerably cheaper and lighter (6g vs 16g)? For me the most important difference is the Voyager's sensor, which tells the headset whether it's on your ear or not. Putting it on will accept a call or transfer a call from the phone to the headset, taking it off will transfer back. It also controls music playback. The headset will pause when you take it off. And finally, no more butt dialing. If you take the M55 off your ear and stash it in your pocket, you do have to switch it off. Not so with the Voyager which will disable the call button while it's not on your ear. The M55 is perfect to be left behind in your car for casual use. The Voyager is the headset for the person who actually uses it a lot.

Plantronics introduces Voyager Legend
by Volker Weber
The Voyager Pro UC is still my favorite headset. But now there is a new player in town. The Voyager Legend is a bit smaller and it makes an important change: tactile switches. The volume slider and the on/off switch should be easier to operate when the device is behind the ear. And the call button is now on the back of the beam which is also safer. The regular model is available immediately, the UC (unified communication) model which connects to PC and phone at the same time is still three months out. It will come with desk charger and pouch with external battery. Similar to the Pro ($100) and Pro UC ($200), I expect the Legend UC to be twice as expensive as the Legend.
While I reserve judgment on how useful the Legend is compared to the Pro, I see one design change I do not like. The Legend has charging contacts that make it easier to connect to a desktop charger or the battery inside the pouch. But the contacts replace the MicroUSB port. That means you have to carry an extra cable if your want to charge on the go.

Öffis und ihre Daten
by Volker Weber

I'm so looking forward to the Lumia 920
by Volker Weber
When Windows Phone 7 was released, I was sure that it would be crap. But then HTC sent me a phone and I loved it. Next was Windows Phone 7.5 and the Lumia 800. I was sure this was a knock-off from the amazing Meego N9, but I loved it even more. Finally there was the Lumia 900 and that one I did not particularly like. It had a flat screen instead of the curved glass from the 800 and it just wasn't as elegant.
But now, the Lumia 920. It brings the 800 form back, in a bigger, better package. A large battery, a much better camera, a stunning display with 1280x768 pixels. It has retina display resolution with vivid colors. The touch screen works with you finger nail just as well as with a glove. The phone has NFC so you can easily connect your peripherals and it charges without being plugged in. And finally, you don't have to worry that you might drop it. The Lumia 800 has survived a few drops from the table without a scratch. The 920 promised to be even more sturdy.
I can't wait to get this thing. Just not in yellow.

The iPhone 5 took just about 60 minutes.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover
by Volker Weber
Power On. Talk time 11 hours. Phone 1 connected.
by Volker Weber
I may be the world's biggest Plantronics fanboy. Simple reason: I have never seen a bad Plantronics product. When the company announced the low cost M25 and M55 headsets, I needed to try them. And again, I am not disappointed. This headset is tiny and very light - just 8 grams. To my American friends that is a quarter ounce. I could probably wear it all day without any irritation.
What sets it apart is a feature that Plantronics has trademarked as DeepSleep. You switch it on and it connects to your phone. Then, when it does not see your phone for 90 minutes it goes into a sleep mode which it can hold up for up to 5 months. No typo, five months. One press of a button and it wakes up. This would be the perfect headset for a car. Switch it on and put it on your center console. Recharge it maybe once a month. As much as I use my car, I would need to charge it maybe four times a year. ;-)
There are four things in the box. The earpiece, a MicroUSB cable, a cigarette lighter plug and a clear soft loop that wraps around your ear. I have attached the loop to the earpiece since I am not confident enough that it does not all out.
And about that headline - that's what the headset says to you when you switch it on. 11 hours talk time. Eleven hours! I love it when devices talk to me and I don't have to figure out what's going on. The power switch is mechanical, so you know whether it's on or off. This means it does not have to flash a LED to show it's on. Press the volume up and it beeps. Repeat pressing it and it will say "Volume Maximum". Hold the master button that makes or breaks calls and you are talking to Siri on your iPhone.
And the sound? Excellent as ever. On the same level as the Voyager Pro. Go on Amazon and search for "Plantronics M55". You'd be surprised how affordable it is.
There is one thing the Voyager Pro does way better. The M55 does not know whether it's on your ear. If you are not wearing it on your head, and it's switched on, you are very likely to butt-dial the number you just called. So, if you take it off, you can't just put it in your pocket. You will then have to switch it off completely.
About the Nokia Lumia launch this week
by Volker Weber
You probably read a lot about the new Lumia devices Nokia announced in New York this week. I'd like to talk about two separate topics: the launch event and the new phones. I need to talk about the event so that you get a grip on how little everybody knows about the phones, all while pretending they know everything. Let's start with the event:
- The event was held on September 5 in the 548 Center on 22nd St in New York. It was well organized and executed. Period.
- There were a few hundred press, analyst and bloggers at the event. The venue had three floors. On the third floor there was the general keynote, on the second there was work room and several breakout rooms for interviews. The fourth floor had large area with demos.
- For the demo floor there were strict rules enforced: the Lumia phones had to be held by the promoters, not by the visitors. The promoters would show you certain things, but would not let you do anything yourself. With the periperals however, you could pretty much do with them what you liked.
- Windows Phone 8 has not been released to manufacturing. Microsoft wants to launch Windows Phone 8 separately, most likely on October 25. We weren't allowed to inspect all elements of Windows Phone 8, and therefore not allowed to handle the phones. Microsoft was wagging Nokia.
- Rules are often broken. I won't say no more.
What was missing from the event? Mostly pricing and availability.
On to the phones themselves.
- There are two models. The 920 is similar in size to the 900 and similar in design to the 800. Which means, it has a curved back and curved glass. It feels way better than the 900. (See? We did get to touch the phones. A lot actually.) The 820 is the cheaper model. I am not interested. :-) You may, because you can personalize the phone by replacing the back cover. That is also how you upgrade to wireless charging.
- WP8 phones are very different from WP7 phones. Everything is better, starting with CPU and graphics, all the way to the software stack. While you can run WP7 software, development now goes way beyond the Silverlight roots of WP7. That's good. It becomes much easier to port stuff from other platforms.
- The new displays are awesome. We could not take one outside, but even inside you could see how much better they performed under a bright light. Nokia is adjusting the Gamma curves to decrease contrast. Darker areas become brighter so you can still see them in direct sunlight. It's a bit like audio compression: music becomes louder by raising the lower volumes, not the higher volumes.
- Wireless charging takes longer than wired, but you will do it more often since you just have to put the phone down on a charger. We had this already with Palm Pre. But now it's a standard working across multiple vendors. I expect everybody to follow. Everybody but Apple of course. Wireless charging can be integrated into furniture. IKEA?
- Nokia faked footage to demo capabilities of the new camera with OIS (optical image stabilization). That's a shame. I am sure nobody else does that. Anyway, we broke some rules, and I can tell you, the camera is really good. You will just be confused with the PureView branding. The technology in the 808 PureView is completely different from the Lumia 920. PureView on the 808 means pixel binning and lossless zoom. PureView on the 920 means f/2.0 lens and OIS. Nokia isn't going to make a WP8 41 MP phone anytime soon. It's just too big.
Do I want one? Yes. In matte black or glossy white. No dull grey, no bright red or yellow, please. Do I want to keep it? I will reserve judgement until I used it for a week. There are pitfalls I don't know about yet. Does it integrate with a Mac? Or with Google services? We will see in a couple of weeks.
Flawless zebra
by Volker Weber
This is the Nokia 808 Pureview, with a little twist. I exchanged the back cover. Now it's black both in the front and back, while the body is still white.
But that's not my point. I used the phone as a multi purpose tool during this week's USA visit:
- All videos* where shot with the phone: Lumia hands on and the Jo Harlow Interview.
- All photos during the trip were shot with the PureView camera.
- I was using VoIP with SIPgate to call home. Cost: zero. I terminate one SIPgate account on my Fritz!Box 7390 and the other one on the Nokia phone's native SIP client.
- All the photos I was shooting automatically started uploading to Microsoft SkyDrive, whenever I had Wi-Fi Access. A bit like Apple's photostream, with way more storage space.
The camera currently defines how useful a phone is to my work. And this one performed absolutely flawlessly.
*) This is how a video sounds when shot in the same venue without the 808 Rich Recording.

Plantronics M25
by Volker Weber
Was ist besonders an diesem Headset? Headset aufsetzen darf man ja.
