Equinux erweitert das Portfolio und bietet nun auch einen digitalen Kabelempfänger (DVB-C) an. Dazu gibt es die tizi.tv App, die Sendungen aufzeichnen kann, Aufnahmen trimmen und die Werbung herausschneiden. Außerdem kann man jederzeit während einer Live-Sendung anhalten, mal kurz auf's Klo gehen und dann weiterschauen. Bei mir läuft das einfach in einem Fenster auf dem Desktop. Erst wenn man mit der Maus drüberfährt, tauchen die Bedienungselemente auf.
Wenn man tizi.tv (optional) online nutzt, dann bekommt man gleich noch die Quote, wer was schaut. Dazu gibt es natürlich noch eine Fernsehzeitung.
Equinux hat mittlerweile eine ganze Reihe von Produkten in diesem Bereich, auch für iPhone, iPad und (eingeschränkt) Android. Demnächst gibt es dann sogar noch einen Video-Recycler, mit dem man alte Analog-Aufnahmen digitalisieren kann.

Freshly washed headphones are awesome

Urbanears is one of those companies that delight me with clever new products. A few month ago I found the Kransen headset which has been in my bag ever since. Now they have a new product: Humlan. And it's washable!
No, not the whole headset, but the headband and the cushions. The things that get yucky over the years. Urbanears includes a washing bag. You unfasten the headband and take off the cushions, drop them in the bag and wash them in cold water. Once they are dry you put them back together and you have a fresh headset. It never occurred to me that was a feature, but now it seems absolutely logical and necessary.
And there is another clever feature. The right ear cap has a socket where you can daisy-chain another headset. Plug in your friend's headset and you are listening to the same music.
It certainly looks very cool, avoiding the oversized cans design. And at the same time it's not one of these boring designs made by mass market electronics companies. How does it sound? I would say "decent" and miles above the earbuds that came with your smartphones. I played them a couple of hours on Nokia MixRadio and was very satisfied.
The cable comes with a built-in microphone and remote. You can pick up calls, start/stop or fast forward or rewind your music. It works both with my Lumias and iDevices. No volume buttons though. Same cable as the Kransen headset but not the same plug.
My perfect picture frame

Apple just did something really stupid. They removed the picture frame feature from iOS 7. Until iOS 6 you could set up your iPad in a dock and have it display all your photos while charging. The only weird thing was that iPad only looks good when docked in portrait mode.
Enter the Microsoft Surface. It does not even need a dock since it has a kickstand. And it comes with a nice picture frame feature which lets you display all photos from a number of folders you select. I just chose the camera roll from Skydrive. All photos are uploaded there, from iPhone and Lumia. And with that, Surface is the only computer in the house not allowed to sleep.
And as it conveniently sits at the end of the table, it gets used every time somebody wants to look up something on the Internet. Which happens a lot.
Do you have an unused Surface RT? I trade you a spanking new BlackBerry Z10 which has never been activated.

Microsoft kauft Nokia. Nicht.

'Lenovo kauft IBM', das ist so falsch wie 'Microsoft kauft Nokia'. So wie die Chinesen damals das PC-Geschäft von IBM gekauft haben, so kauft Microsoft das Handy-Geschäft von Nokia. Das ist der Teil, den wir kennen, aber es ist nicht der einzige Teil. Nokia hat andere Geschäftsbereiche wie NSN (Nokia Solutions and Networks, vormals Nokia Siemens Networks) und HERE (Navigation). Nokia ist ein altes Unternehmen, älter als die oft zitierten Gummistiefel, und es wird weiter bestehen.
Was macht Microsoft mit dem Handygeschäft, wenn es weiter Nokia gibt? Zunächst schluckt Microsoft diese ganze Sparte mit Mann und Maus und schraubt draußen ein Microsoft-Schild an das alte Nokia-Hauptquartier in Espoo. Nokia hat andere Standorte in Finland, wo die Nokia-Schilder hängen bleiben. Microsoft wird weiter Smartphones der Marke Lumia und Featurephones der Marke Asha produzieren und verkaufen. Microsoft übernimmt also auch die Fabriken und die Logistik.
Und jetzt wird's kompliziert.
Schauen wir noch mal auf Lenovo/IBM. Lenovo verkaufte weiterhin IBM Thinkpads. Für eine Übergangszeit. Heute heißen sie Lenovo Thinkpad. So passiert das auch jetzt. Microsoft kauft die Rechte an den Marken Asha, Lumia und Nokia für die Verwendung bei Mobiltelefonen für 10 Jahre. Schauen wir, was Nokias Marketing-Chefin dazu sagt:
On smartphones, we’ll be seeking to create a unified brand across Lumia and Windows. But we understand that the Asha and feature phone range will carry on the ‘Nokia’ branding.
Asha ist eine schwache Marke, Nokia eine starke. Bei den Featurephones wird Microsoft also weiter Nokia-Produkte verkaufen. Was aber passiert bei den Lumias?
Das wird der spannende Bereich. Microsoft will Hardware anbieten, besser: integrierte Produkte mit Hardware und Software, so wie Apple das erfolgreich vormacht. Da gibt es jetzt Xbox, Surface, Lumia, Nokia Asha. Mit dem Lumia 2520 erzeugt Nokia kurz vor der Übernahme sogar noch eine Überlappung mit Surface. Das ruft nach einer Neuordnung. Unter Steve Ballmer würde Microsoft einfach überall Windows draufpappen. Das wird sein Nachfolger eher nicht tun.
Was mich besonders interessiert, sind die Veränderungen im Produktportfolio. Das 2520 etwa ist voll in Mobilfunknetze integriert und funktioniert mit LTE einfach überall. Surface dagegen braucht WLAN. Ich gehe davon aus, dass Microsoft hier schnell besser wird. Microsoft braucht dringend größere Stückzahlen. Und da ist Nokia derzeit am unteren Ende mit dem 520, bald 525 erfolgreich. Am oberen Ende bauen sie die besten Kameras auf dem Markt. Wie geht das weiter?
Ist schon jemandem aufgefallen, mit welchem Tempo die Finnen mittlerweile neue Telefone auf den Markt bringen? Die haben eine volle Pipeline, die jeden Monat neue Geräte ausstößt.
Wireless charging on the go

This a portable wireless Qi charging plate DC-50. You just place your phone on top of the plate and it starts charging. No wires. How does the plate recharge its own battery? You place it on top of a Qi wireless charger:
Easy enough. You can also put the charging plate on the wireless charger and then stack the phone on top of the charging plate. In fact, you can stack up to four charging plates on the charger and they will all top off.
Not carrying a wireless charger? No problem. Top it off over MicroUSB:
Staying at a hotel while traveling with the charging plate and a USB charger? Plug it in, keep the charging plate connected and put it on your night stand. Leave the phone on the charging plate. Both will be fully charged in the morning. And you can pick up the phone anytime without it being tethered to the wall.
Capacity? I have no idea. But it's 150 g and mostly battery. I am guessing it is good for one full recharge.

Android ist offen. Originale sind überteuert. Business und Kamera geht nicht. IT entscheidet. Sicherheit geht vor. Buch muss aus Papier sein. Hübsch ist doof. Alu ist wertvoll. Schnell gewinnt. Die Jugend verdummt. Schnäppchen sind gut. Microsoft ist erledigt. Früher gab es noch gute Musik.

Ganz groß

Ich kann mich gut erinnern, wie ich in einem Auto neben mir den ersten Menschen mit einem Samsung Note gesehen habe und gelacht habe. Wie kann man sich nur so etwas an den Kopf halten?
Das war vor zwei Jahren. 45 Millionen verkaufte Geräte später erscheint das ursprünglich 5.3" große Note-Display kaum größer als viele andere Handys, die mittlerweile 4.5" bis 5" groß sind. Und ich halte seit einer Woche 6" in der Hand und finde das gar nicht mehr komisch.
Sieht man mal von der Befindlichkeit ab, hat das große Display nur Vorteile. Man sieht mehr, man sieht besser. Und man gewöhnt sich schnell. So ein 3.5" großes iPhone 4(S) kommt mir richtig putzig vor. Und selbst auf meinem Favoriten, dem 4.5" Display des Lumina 1020, ist auf einmal arg wenig drauf.
Für die Hand sind 6" kein Problem; einhändig kann man immer noch blättern und Anrufe annehmen funktioniert auch. Sonst nimmt man eben zwei. Bleibt das Transport-Problem. Wohin damit? Für mich aktuell kein Problem, da ich eher große Taschen habe. Jacketts und Handtaschen lösen das auch. Bleiben nur Hipster mit engen Jeans. Und über die mache ich mir gerade keine Gedanken. :-)

Yoga 2 Pro vs Yoga 11 - die Hardware

In Orange ist das Yoga 2 Pro sofort als Lenovo Yoga zu erkennen. Es ist ein wenig größer geworden - klar, 13" statt 11". Aber es fühlt sich nicht schwerer an. Und wie schwer ist es? Besser, wie leicht ist es? Ein Vergleich mit Apples MacBooks macht das deutlich:

1,39 kg Yoga 2 Pro 13"
1,57 kg MacBook Pro 13" Retina
Es ist etwa so leicht wie ein MacBook Air, hat aber ein höher auflösendes Display als das MacBook Pro Retina. Das ist beachtlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass das Display hinter Corning Gorilla Glass liegt und auch noch Multitouch hat.
Die orange Shell ist etwas dezenter ausgefallen und zieht sich nicht so weit um den Rand. Stromanschluss, SD-Karte und Kopfhörer haben die Seite gewechselt. USB hat hier die 3.0-Spezifikation. HDMI wechselt vom großen auf den Mikrostecker.
Auf der anderen Seite gibt es einen USB 2.0-Anschluss und man erkennt, wie sehr das Yoga 11 bei mir leiden musste. Hier ist es aufgeschlagen, als es (geöffnet) vom Tisch fiel.
Die Tastatur ist nun hintergrundbeleuchtet, irritiert mich aber noch etwas mit der zusätzlichen Spalte rechts. Mit der Zeit werde ich mich daran gewöhnen müssen.
Dieser Lenovo-Schriftzug wird wohl noch zu meinem "Ceterum censeo". Das alte Yoga 11 hatte ihn nicht und beim neuen steht er oft auf dem Kopf oder der Seite. Ohne war besser.
Die gute Nachricht: Yoga bleibt Yoga. Es ist groß geworden, aber nicht schwer. Wem ein 13" Tablet zu groß erscheint, kann sich ja mal das 27"-Modell von Lenovo anschauen. :-) Zum Lesen finde ich es zu unhandlich, das kann das kleine 8-Zoll-Beiboot besser. Aber Videos auf diesem Display - holy moly. Muss man noch mal sagen: 3200 x 1600 Pixel. Ein 13" MacBook Pro Retina hat 2560 x 1600, das größere 15" immerhin 2880 x 1800.
Instagram makes it to Windows Phone

Lots of people have been asking for Instagram on Windows Phone and Nokia promised it a month ago in Abu Dhabi. Now it's available in beta. You can find me here at http://instagr.am/volkerweber.
This is quite an early beta. No videos, no tagging people, only branches out to Windows Phone Camera, not to Nokia Camera. It does however work with my workflow. Shoot a photo with Nokia Camera, then post it through Instagram, possibly into Facebook or Twitter.

Yoga 2 Pro has landed

I have been doing most of work this year on a Lenovo Yoga 11. That's an RT machine. This year Lenovo has decided to go Windows 8.1 all the way. So I am replacing the Yoga 11 with the Yoga 2 Pro. You are going to hear a lot more in the coming days and weeks, but look at this: backlit keyboard. And what a gorgeous one. Screen resolution: 1800. That's 1800 lines of 3200 pixels each. Imagine that, more than a MacBook Pro Retina. With touchscreen. Convertible to a tablet. And the other Yoga positions. Wheeezeeeee.
Update 1: Just two hours later, I am not so sure about the machine anymore. The reason is Windows and all the crapware that Lenovo loads onto the machine. It's dragging me back into the Windows of old. To me, WinRT is the future and Win32 is the past. I know it still rules, but it's not the world I live in. I load Win32 in a virtual machine if I have to. But I don't want to deal with it daily.
That's why I love the Lenovo 11 and the Microsoft Surface. They are simple. They just work. Yes, there is still a Desktop on RT, but it's only there until Microsoft has METROed Office.
I think I need to install all my Metro apps and look the other way. Then I can start to like this one as well.
Update 2: I did just that. I removed all the crapware that was pre-installed and reduced Windows 8.1 to what Microsoft wants it to be. Then I activated Office which was already installed. Installed some of my apps from the Windows store. And now it's "mine".

Vibrator aus am Lenovo Yoga Tablet

Ich habe mir einen Wolf gesucht in den Einstellungen und nichts gefunden, das Tablet vollkommen leise zu machen. Es meinte immer noch vibrieren zu müssen, wenn es was zu melden gibt. Blöde Sache das, wenn das Tablet auf dem Nachtisch schläft. Und dann die Lösung:
Lautstärke über die Wippe ganz runter fahren. Und dann noch einmal auf "leiser" drücken. Aus die Maus. Keine Vibrator mehr.

Size does matter

When I travelled to Abu Dhabi, I brought the Nokia Lumia 1020 as a camera and the Lenovo Yoga 11 as my typewriter. One of my fellow travelers brought his iPhone, his MacBook Air, and his iPad. Three devices? Why? Well, his iPhone because he does not leave home without it, his MacBook Air, since he needed a typewriter too, and his iPad, because he wanted a tablet as well.
The same thing happens at many enterprises. Managers need a phone and a computer and they want a tablet. Three devices instead of two. Three things to buy, manage, carry around, charge. For many companies this is not sustainable, mostly from a cost perspective. Adding insult to injury, people need their private devices as well, since company policies might restrict the use of their business devices to the point, where they become less universal than they could be.
How can you cut back on the number of devices you carry? First of all, dual use, private and business of existing devices. BlackBerry leads the way with Balance, but others follow. Be it as containers on private devices, or outright copying the BlackBerry model like Samsung is doing with Knox. This still leaves us with three potential devices to carry around: phone, tablet, computer. If not carry around, at least have.
The tablet is not replacing computers in business use. At least not, if you need to get work done. Microsoft is trying the hybrid approach with Surface. Build a powerful tablet that can replace a computer by adding peripherals like dock, keyboard, mouse, screen. Nokia is close with their 2520 tablet, which was designed with a must-have accessory: the keyboard folio which turns the tablet into a notebook.
And there is another trend. Smartphones are getting bigger. Much bigger. iPhone went from 3.5" to 4" only. But the entry level Lumia went from 3.8" (620) to 4.7" (625). This weeks marks the release of the Lumia 1520, which was announced in Abu Dhabi. It has a gorgeous 6 inch screen, only one inch away from popular Android tablets. I am very curious to see how this machine will alter my use of smartphones and tablets.

Returning the Pebble

Spent another few days with a Pebble, just after the update for iOS 7 notifications came out. Now you can get all banner notifications from your iPhone, no matter which app displays them. Before the update you were limited to texts and emails.
This is a very cool companion to an iPhone or an Android, if you want to be alerted what's going on, and when it's happening. However, this is not how I work. First of all, I don't wear a watch. I do have a number of nice watches, but I find myself not wearing them. Even without looking at a watch I know the time, with a quarter of an hour precision. That is good enough most of the time, and if not I check the Lumia Glance screen or the Mac watch in the upper right. I have also switched off most notifications, including the phone ringing, so I can work on stuff without interruptions.
Having said that, while traveling, I find the Pebble very convenient. I don't have to get my phone out, I won't ever miss a call, and I can even reject it from the watch, without looking. The Pebble can vibrate and quite strongly so. It's a bit like wearing my Voyager headset, without being so "in your face" about it. Bonus point: it does not require a daily recharge.
Editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award? No. But that's only me. I can see why you would want one.

Just left the door Wednesday morning when the news started coming in.
- Vine went public with their Windows Phone app. There is so much interesting stuff to see there, but once again I fail at shooting videos. Photos are ok, but I suck at video.
- Nokia released Refocus, the app they showed in Abu Dhabi. It's available for all Pureview Windows Phones. This includes the 920, 925 and 1020, as well as newer devices. Refocus works similar to Smartcam. It takes a quick set of photos. While it is capturing the images, it adjusts the focus, which lets you change the focus later on. In addition to that, you can pop one color to draw attention to a detail in the photo. Try it out.
- HERE Drive and Drive+ also received significant updates. They now work current traffic data into the estimated arrival time. You can also get a quick overview of the traffic around you. Finally, it will list all the turn-by-turn instructions for the intended route.
- Apple released iOS 7.0.4, a small bug fix update that is supposed to resolve an issue with FaceTime calls. iBooks finally gets rid of the wood veneer background but keeps the page curl effect.
- Flipboard for Windows 8.1 (and RT) arrives. Even if it's a complete rewrite, it works exactly as you would expect from the iPad version. Plus, it gives you live tiles for sections. Just pin your favorite sections to the front page.

DNUG Herbstkonferenz

Gestern war ich im schönen Frankfurt-Höchst, ähem, also jedenfalls auf der DNUG-Herbstkonferenz. Das war für mich eine sensationell gute Veranstaltung. Ich konnte alle Leute wieder treffen, die ich lange nicht gesehen habe. Ortwin, Otto, Olaf, Volker, Markus, Alexander, Florian, Frank, ich hatte Zeit, mit Pete zu plaudern, Uffe (Unidentified frequently flying entity) war da, vielen anderen wie Jörg und Henry konnte ich wenigstens winken. Und dann Paul, ganz dicke Überraschung.
Was für mich sensationell gut ist, ist für die DNUG eine Katastrophe. Wie immer fragte ich nach den Teilnehmern. 200. Auf der Liste der Teilnehmer standen genau 140, der Anmeldetisch sah nach 40% No-Shows aus. Das reicht vorne und hinten nicht. Diese Konferenzen sind eine wichtige Einnahmequelle. Auch in der Mitgliederwerbung sieht es mau aus, trotz aller möglichen Gimmicks.
Die IBM spart bei der finanziellen Unterstützung, ein Klassentreffen von Business Partnern findet auch keine Sponsoren, es sei denn aus Solidarität. Noch kann die DNUG aus der Substanz leben. Wenn sie aber kein "Dead Man Walking" sein will, dann müssen sich grundlegende Dinge ändern. Runter von den Kosten, keine Konferenztourneen mehr, sondern an einen zentralen Standort, der leicht erreichbar ist.
Vor allem aber muss die DNUG ein klares Profil haben. Etwa "Anwendervereinigung mit Arbeitskreisen zu aktuellen Themen, mit starkem Auftritt gegenüber IBM". Der Austausch unter den Kunden im Sinne von "wir haben das probiert, das hat funktioniert, und hier sind wir an die Wand gelaufen", das bringt was. Das können die anderen LUGs auch, aber eben zu viel kleineren Kosten. So ein bisschen neumodisches Barcamp-Gedöns, das überzeugt nicht nicht.
Mein Programm würde heißen HARDBODY DNUG - LIFT HEAVY.

As you probably know, this update seamlessly integrates Pebble with the Notification Center in iOS 7 and allows you to receive notifications from apps like Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox, WhatsApp, Flipboard and more.
Insanely great

In the last couple of weeks, I have replaced almost every single one of the mobile devices I work with. And Steve Jobs' 'insanely great' perfectly describes these marvels. The iPhone 5S and and the iPad Air are incredibly fast. I can still remember getting my first iPad for my birthday only three years ago, and I could not comprehend what a powerful computer with a slender profile it was. Three years ago I had the iPhone 4 which had the first camera that would let me leave my Canon back in my hotel room. And now this. An iPad Air is more powerful than a notebook used to be just three years ago. And the iPhone 5S is by far the fastest device I ever had.
Yes, these devices come at a premium, but I find them to be flawless.
2013 brought four new BlackBerrys to the market: the iconic Z10, the Q10 for BlackBerry keyboard fans, the Q5 for the budget minded, and finally the Z30, which trumps all three. You have to hold it in your hand to feel the difference. BlackBerry has lost a lot of money this year because they overestimated the demand for the Z10, but that does not mean that these BlackBerrys are not also insanely great. Their greatest benefit is that enterprise can manage a part of the device and keep their hands off your private data and apps. No need to block Facebook et al. If you want to store your data in the cloud that does not affect your enterprise data. Two machines in one. And yet, only one interface to worry about.
Again, these BlackBerrys are not 'affordable' which may be their biggest problem.
Way below the iDevices price range there are a lot of Android devices. Android is a phenomenal success story. While there are very capable high end Androids that are still more affordable than iDevices, the majority of the Android success is at the low end. Cheap plastic, underpowered, often on older Android versions. Landfill Android, as one colleague describes them.
Just two weeks ago, Lenovo has demonstrated that you can build very affordable Android devices that stand out from the crowd. Literally. They don't run the pure Android experience that Nexus devices offer. If they would, I would have zero reservations to recommend them.
My own biggest innovation was the Lumia 1020 with its exceptional camera. It may not be what you need, but it's currently the perfect device for me. And it will be challenged in just a few weeks by the mighty 1520, that I have already played with in Abu Dhabi. I have no idea if I can live with a 6" phone, but if I can, I will hardly be touching tablets any more. Look at Kindle and imagine it had a brilliant full HD display, readable out in the sun and an exceptional camera. This promises to be my device of the year, even eclipsing the 1020.
All of these machines are insanely great. There, I said it again.
DNS-Server bei 1&1

Wer bei 1&1 Server hostet und Namen auflösen möchte, braucht dazu DNS-Server. Dummerweise hat 1&1 einige alte Adressen 'unsichtbar gemacht' und erzählt aus irgendeinem Grund an der Hotline Unsinn. Die Lösung ist einfach. Diese Adressen funktionieren:
10.255.255.3
10.255.255.4
Ich zitiere mal einen angefressenen Kunden:
Die Sauerei ist:
a) das Problem ist bekannt und selbst verursacht
b) die blöden Kunden werden von unwissenden Supportern durch unsinnigste Maßnahmen getrieben (DHCP, Net-Masks), die offensichtlich nichts mit dem Problem zu tun haben bis man
c) zufällig auf einen stößt, der einem versteht und die "magic IPs" kennt. Das ganze 1.5 Wochen lang.
Premium geht anders.
Weisse Bescheid. 1&1 Supporter dürfen das auch gerne hier lesen. "Huhu, wenn Kunde DNS-Server sucht, einfach die beiden Adressen da oben durchsagen."
Which Lenovo Yoga Tablet should you get?

Quite a while ago I coined a very simple rule: "If Android, then Nexus". The reason is simple: no crapware and timely updates. But I am making an exception with the Lenovo Yoga Tablet because of its elegant and purposeful design. In case you missed it, I explained it last week.
Lenovo did not release one tablet, but two. The larger one has a 10 inch display, the smaller one 8 inch. The difference does not seem much, especially if you look at the photo above. Well, look again:
They look alike, but they feel completely different. I find the smaller device even more radical than the bigger one. It's shape makes for the perfect reading device. And for the first time ever, I dropped Kindle and started reading on this one. Just grab the role with one hand and read. If you are tired, turn it around 180 degrees and grab it with the other hand.
The 10 inch model has a single benefit: if you want to watch movies or type with ten fingers on glass, a bigger screen is better. For everything else, I prefer the smaller device. Since both tablets share the same pixel resolution, the smaller model is sharper. It's also easier to type with two thumbs, as you can easily reach across the keyboard in portrait mode. Even if they were the same price, I wanted the smaller one. But they aren't. The 8 inch model sells for 229 € and is a whopping 70 € cheaper than the bigger one.
One more thing: I wish this was running Windows RT 8.1 instead of Android Jellybean.

Should you buy a new iPad? And if you do, then which one?

Three years ago I have been fielding many questions from friends who wanted to buy their significant other an iPad for Xmas. Which one to get? There were two parameters: how much money do you want to spend and does it travel. Things have gotten easier, because now everybody knows what an iPad is. And they have gotten harder because there is so much competition. You can easily buy a Nexus 7 these days and be perfectly happy for a year or two. Say, you do want an iPad. Which one? Air or Mini? Or is your current iPad good enough?
The new generation of iPads is equally powerful. You just have to decide which size you want. And they are much more similar in weight and design. With the old generation it was kind of easy. If you wanted Retina and a faster machine, you got the iPad 4. If you wanted small and light, you got the Mini. Now both of them are equally fast, and the big one has shed a lot of weight.
My current thinking is: if you are a girl and carry a purse, get the Mini. It fits in there easily. If you are boy, you don't have a purse, so you might as well get the Air. If you are older than 45 years, by all means get the Air. Bigger is better for your eyes.
Now we know which one. Which leaves us with the question, if you would want to replace your old iPad.
- If you have a Mini or an iPad 4, most likely not. Unless you need the latest and greatest.
- If you have the original iPad, by all means, yes.
- With the iPad 2, still yes. It's as big but not as heavy as the iPad 3 and 4, but it's only as powerful as the old Mini. Come to think of it, the iPad 2 and original Mini are the same pair as the iPad Air and the new Mini. Same resolution, same power.
- I am not as clear on the iPad 3. It's as big as the iPad 4, has a Retina display and the old dock connector. However it's much slower than the iPad 4. If you don't have speed issues, keep it.
Upgrade the original iPad and the iPad 2. Not the iPad 4 and probably not the 3. Not the Mini. Why not the Mini? Because it works well and does not benefit from the Retina display as much as the larger machine.
The big elephant in the room is one missing feature: TouchID. That's going to come next year. And it's a want want want feature. You will buy a new iPad next year just for this one feature. And I could never recommend to drop a one year old iPad for a new one.

Das Angebot "out for delivery on our next business day, 11/07/13, by the end of the day" ist exakt das, was das Tracking System bisher als Vorschlag unterbreitet. Halten wir fest, dass UPS bedauerlicherweise zwei Tage in Folge zwei Pakete nicht einladen kann, auch wenn im Tracking System "out for delivery" steht.

Das Pattern hat sich geändert. Die letzten beiden Tage stand zwischen 5:09 und 6:22 im Tracking System, die Pakete seien "Out for Delivery". Heute gibt es keine neuen Scans mehr. Irgendwann in den nächsten Stunden wird sicher auch das Management im Büro erscheinen und dann schauen wir mal, was die sagen.

Nun stehen beide Pakete auf "Out for Delivery" mit der Uhrzeit 6:42. Welt der Wunder.

Nichts, nada, niente. Keine Pakete, keine Rückmeldung auf eine Mail an den deutschen Service vor 18 Stunden, kein Rückruf. Wie vom Erdboden verschluckt.
Absender verspricht, die Reklamationsabteilung werde mich in den nächsten 60 Minuten anrufen und mir mitteilen, wann genau die Pakete heute kommen. Ich vermute zwischen 9 und 19 Uhr.

Google is taking this one step further: Android phones will look up your G+ profile photo and display it when you call someone. And you will make your impression.
Check your profile photos. Do you look like a dork? This would be great time to change that.
Rocking the Pebble

I am bit late to the Pebble smartwatch, since it needs an iPhone or an Android and does not work with my Lumia mainstay. However, this is iPhone week and I am testing a Pebble watch courtesy of Max Bäumle, developer of the highly recommended Smartwatch Pro app for the iPhone. If you have a Pebble and an iPhone, do get this app. It adds a multitude of features to your Pebble, for instance Calendar events, Twitter messages and Reminders.
Tablets should have stands

Whether you have an iPad, a Nexus or a Galaxy Tab, you are missing a great feature which can only be added by a bulky cover: the ability to prop up the tablet when not holding it. Even when holding it, a stand provides additional support. The Microsoft design is very elegant, and with the latest design it provides two angles for the kickstand. I find the Lenovo design superior, because it provides a great grip for holding the tablet and gives you an additional option: propping up the tablet for typing on the keyboard. The only downside is you can't really put the tablet down on a surface to read in portrait mode.
Hackers Take Limo Service Firm for a Ride

Inside the plain text archive apparently stolen from the firm are more than 850,000 credit card numbers, expiry dates and associated names and addresses. More than one-quarter (241,000) of all compromised card numbers were high- or no-limit American Express accounts, card numbers that have very high resale value in the cybercrime underground.
Returning the Lumia 925

As the German saying goes 'Das Bessere ist des Guten Feind', the 1020 has beaten the 925 hands down. As I am writing this the 925 is being reset to factory values and goes back to Nokia at the next opportunity. I have not used it once since I had the 1020. It may be lighter but I want the bigger camera. I have a lot more potential to lose weight but a mobile phone. Actually I am prepared to gain some weight on the phone side of things. I will keep you posted.

BlackBerry Receives Investment of U.S. $1 Billion - CEO Thorsten Heins resigns

WATERLOO, ONTARIO and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 4, 2013) - BlackBerry today announced that it has entered into an agreement pursuant to which Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited ("Fairfax") and other institutional investors (collectively, the "Purchasers") will invest in BlackBerry through a U.S. $1 billion private placement of convertible debentures.
Thorsten Heins and David Kerr intend to resign from the Board at closing. In addition, Mr. Heins will step down as Chief Executive Officer at closing and Mr. Chen will serve as Interim Chief Executive Officer pending completion of a search for a new Chief Executive Officer.
In other words: nobody was interested in buying BlackBerry. And Fairfax was unable to raise enough money from investors.
