DRM is bad for the customer

A friend has lost her hard disk. Windows will not boot anymore and it appears the drive is badly damaged. I will be able to rescue roughly 10000 files with a total 9 gig of data from the disk. Amongst that data is a bunch of files from the iTunes Music Store. Of course she has not made CD copies and since we won't be able to de-authorize her iTunes installation she also just lost another "license" to play the music she paid for. This is actually the second such incident, so we are getting closer to the point where she won't be able to play her music again.
Please take this as a reminder: Remove DRM from your files now. You will otherwise lose them. Guaranteed.
Update: Read the comments. It appears you can reset your authorizations in the iTMS. This does not really change my point of view. We need open formats, not closed ones. You can still play CDs you bought 20 years ago. Will that apply to DRMed AACs?

It takes a long time to build trust, and trust can be lost in a split second.
Lotus was a company that has always built on trust. Ever since the company learned that copy-protecting 1-2-3 only hurt their customers, Lotus has always trusted the customer. You can still download full versions of all their products from the web. They have time-bombed licenses but never time-bombed code. There is no difference between the demo version and the full version and I know that many people have a hard time believing that. This is just how the company ticks. The customer counts the licenses it needs to pay and does exactly that. There are certain ways that help the customer to determine if they have enough licenses, for instance by summing up people in the Domino directory, but that is only a tool and not a lock. And trust me, it is very very hard to understand the licensing scheme.
The rest of IBM is different. Demo version are generally time-bombed. You need keys to unlock certain hardware features, etc. But Lotus, although long a part of IBM, has always maintained its trust relationship with the customer.
It appears this is about to change right now. At least in Germany.

- Workplace Designer applications must be opened with an Internet Explorer browser.
It appears IBM has more difficulties with their software if you are not on Windows. Trying to log into the forum I get either a "Error 500: org/apache/soap/util/xml/XMLParserUtils" or I get thrown back into the forum as Guest. DoesNotWorkplace on both Safari and Firefox.
Get your copy here. It is 10 separate downloads totalling 2287 MB. You need to deploy a full Workplace Collaboration Services machine (dual Xeon, 4 gig of memory).

I was not sure which photo we would use with the interview but now that I have the final copy I can release this one.
Here is the story behind the picture. Ambuj was explaining the user interface of Hannover to me while I was still holding the camera. I quickly shot a burst of 10 frames while he was unaware this was going to happen. Of those 10 frames I missed at least five since I was not looking through the viewfinder. This one came out as the one I liked best. I have never seen him in such a good mood, very relaxed and laid back.
Tut NIVEA als beim ersten Mal

Eigentlich dachte ich, dass mich nichts mehr aufregt. Aber vor einer Kamera zu stehen hat mir dann doch ziemlich zu schaffen gemacht. Wie gut, dass das ne Aufzeichnung war, da konnte ich zwischendurch mal verschnaufen. Für die paar Sekunden haben wir natürlich mindestens eine Viertelstunde gebraucht. Und natürlich habe ich viel mehr erzählt, als gesendet wurde.
Die Aufnahme, die am Anfang gezeigt wurde, ist viel später gemacht worden. Das erkenne ich daran, dass da gerade "meine" CD eingelegt wird. ;-) Die kann man bei Ubuntu bestellen. Vorgeschlagen werden gleich 10 Stück, die man dann an Freunde verteilt. Sehr nett auch der Aufdruck auf der Rückseite, der einen zum Kopieren und Weitergeben ermuntert.
Die Fahrt zum LinuxTag war ein sehr schönes Erlebnis. Ich saß im IC von Darmstadt nach Karlsruhe. Der fährt recht gemütlich ganz dicht am Hang der Bergstraße entlang. Bickenbach, Zwingenberg, Bensheim, Weinheim, dann Heidelberg, Bruchsal, Karlsruhe. Die Landschaft strotzte vor grün. Auf den Bergrücken zahlreiche Burgen, darunter zum Teil sehr schöne Dörfer. Deutschland ist ein schönes Land!

Der eine oder andere erinnert sich vielleicht: Vor drei Wochen schrieb ich, dass Apple mir ein Netzteil berechnet hat, weil Apple den Vorgang verbaselt hat. Und dass ich dafür wieder mal in der Tüdeldütwarteschlange von AppleDoesNotCare gehangen habe. Das ganze endete dann in einer Entschuldigung per EMail und dem Versprechen mir die 70,76 Euro zu erstatten, die Apple einfach eingezogen hatte.
Nun, heute kriege ich eine Abrechnung von Apple. Auf der steht, man erstattet mir 64,96 Euro. Fehlen also 5,80 Euro, oder 5,00 Euro plus MWSt. Wo kommen die her? Auf der Rechnung steht Restocking Fee 10 Eur, davon 50%, macht 5 Euro.
5,80 Euro bringen mich nicht um. Ich habe für mehr Geld in der Warteschleife gehangen. Dass Apple mir aber 5,80 Euro für die Behebung eines Fehlers berechnet, den niemand anders als Apple gemacht hat, werte ich einfach mal als besonderes Engagement bei der Kundenbetreuung.
Es geht auch anders. Cyberport hat mir mal Ware berechnet, aber an jemand anderen geliefert. Mann, war denen das peinlich. Einen Tag später kam die Ware bei mir per Express an. Und drin lag außer einer Entschuldigung ein Einkaufsgutschein für 5 Euro. Inklusive MWSt. Ich empfehle heute deshalb immer noch Cyperport. Bei Apple tue ich mich da etwas schwerer.

Wie Mobilcom mitteilte, umfasst das neue Bündelpaket 200 Minuten für monatlich 19,80 Euro ohne Grundgebühr. Der Minutenpreis liegt damit bei 9,9 Cent. Von der 201. Minute kostet die Minute 39 Cent ... Zudem verfallen die nicht genutzten Minuten zum Monatsende.
Ich würde titeln: Auch Mobilcom verarscht weiter die Kunden.

Domino 7.0 and DB2

I recently wrote about Notes "Hannover" on heise news. There is also a snippet in there saying that IBM will first have to deliver features that have been promised for version 7. I mention that DB2 will not be provided with the 7.0 release. I have received numerous questions about this. I do know that DB2 support is provided in the current beta release. Unfortunately I cannot reveal the source of my information.
IBM is really quiet about this but I have some very solid information that DB2 support will be turned off in the initial Domino 7.0. Select customers will be able to use it but it is not meant to be used by everyone.
Keep in mind that putting a relational datastore underneath the Notes database model is really hard. It appears they have not been able yet to deliver on it completely.
A lot of excitement around a few bitmaps

IBM used the 22nd DNUG conference to talk about the next release of Notes. Because the conference is held in Hannover they assigned the name of this exciting city (cough, cough) to this project. Did you know that Hannover is spoken as Hunn-O-fer? Which does not rime with Hangover. :-)
So what is IBM announcing? Notes as an incarnation of the Workplace Client, able to run all existing Notes applications. We have heard that before, haven't we? So what else is new? Hannover will be provisioned from the next version of Domino. No extra Workplace Server. Unless they rebrand a Workplace Server as Domino.
What people got really excited is the look of the next version. It shows that IBM is finally assigning real interface designers to Notes, and don't let it be done by developers, who sometimes are great developers but poor designers. However you should not forget you are seeing bitmaps of something that the may or may not be the next version of Notes. It simply does not exist yet. IBM hopes to be able to show some live code at Lotusphere 2006 which means it is still very far out until you get this on your desktop, let alone deploy it to your users.
I think Hannover serves as a beacon into the future and its only value today is to show that Notes is not dead.
Back home safely

For five hours that is. Then I have to leave for Frankfurt to cover an interesting trial. And on to Hannover for the IBM Lotus Technical Forum a.k.a. the 22nd DNUG conference. Posting may be sparse again in the next days.
The travel to and from Scotland was uneventful. We were very late at check-in both when leaving and returning. I believe nobody else checked in after us. We were also very quick to leave the airport. (Hint: Sit in the last row. RyanAir bords through the door in the back as well.) So we were the first people at the rental desk in Prestwick and were out of the airport within 10 minutes after touchdown. The same was true for Hahn, were we caught the shuttle to the parking lot just before they closed the door. I know, I know: He who lives faster is finished earlier. :-)

Google wird wirklich vielsprachig

Wenn man bedenkt, dass aktuelle Schätzungen davon ausgehen, dass lediglich ca. 35.000 Menschen des Rätoromanischen mächtig sind und dabei auch noch 4 Unterdialekte existieren, dann wundert es schon ein wenig, dass Google den Aufwand treibt, dafür eine lokalisierte Variante anzubieten. Zur Übersetzung wurden Berichten zufolge lokale Studenten engagiert.

Apple using Intel CPUs

The rumors were true. Apple is going to build Macs with Intel CPUs.
Mac OS X for Intel will run PowerPC binaries (through a translation layer) as well as universal binaries that contain Intel and PowerPC code. Apparently the PowerPC could not deliver enough power for Apple to bet its future on. If this is true, then it is great news for customers. However I have a few nagging doubts. I assume that Apple needs Intel's DRM on the chip. Otherwise there is no way to lock the customer into DRM schemes.
What this does not mean is that you will be able to run Mac OS X on your PC.

Heute sind wir drei Stunden mit einem Mini Cooper S rumgebratzt. Kein Vergleich zum Cooper ohne S, den wir in Hamburg hatten. Während der normale Cooper sicher ein prima Auto ist, geht es nur im S richtig vorwärts. Offenbar gibt es ein paar Tuner, die auf die 170 PS nochmal 40 und mehr drauf legen, aber meiner Ansicht nach ist der S genau richtig motorisiert, denn er kommt so schon selbst auf trockener Straße ständig an den Rand der Traktion. Es gibt wenige Autos, die so schnell und wendig sind und dabei noch zwei Personen plus Gepäck befördern können. Allerdings hat der Test heute auch ein paar böse Nachteile gezeigt:
- Der Cooper S hat einen exorbitanten Spritverbrauch. Ich habe 16 Liter getankt und bin damit 110 km gefahren. Da eine Tankanzeige eher ungenau ist, kann ich mich um ein, zwei Liter verschätzen, aber der Verbrauch lag jedenfalls sehr deutlich über 10 Liter.
- Das Auto lenkt sich sehr präzise, fährt aber zugleich sehr schlecht geradeaus. Fünf Millimeter am Lenkrad gedreht und man hat die Spur gewechselt. Das erfordert sehr viel Konzentration, die auf längeren Strecken sicher ermüdet.
- Die Beschleunigung "unten heraus" ist prima, aber auf der Autobahn passiert jenseits 180 nicht mehr viel. Mit etwas Anlauf geht der S dann auch 220, aber da muss er schwer kämpfen. Zugleich will sich niemand von dieser Kiste überholen lassen. Diverse BMW-Fahrer, die schlafend auf der linken Spur mit 160 dahintrödelten, gaben erst mal heftig (und vergeblich) Gas, wollten aber keinesfalls von der vierten auf die dritte Spur wechseln.
- Unser Testwagen hat ein sehr lautes Pfeifen im Bereich des oberen Windschutzscheibenrahmens, das ab Tempo 175 lästig wurde. Der Verkäufer hat sich das notiert und er kannte auch einen anderen Fall, bei dem das aufgetreten war. Es lag wohl an einer schlecht eingepassten Windschutzscheibe.
- Die Schaltung ist hakelig. Den Rückwärtsgang bekommt man nur mit sehr viel Kraft rein, und die Vorspannung der dritten Gasse ist ziemlich hoch, so dass man in Gefahr ist, vom fünften nicht in den sechsten, sondern in den vierten Gang zu schalten. Das wird der Motor wohl nicht mögen, wenn man den fünften vorher ausgedreht hat. ;-)
Wenn man diese Minuspunkte in Betracht zieht, hat der Cooper S keine Chance gegen den GTI, den wir vor gut zwei Monaten gefahren sind. Der war genauso agil wie der Mini, fuhr jedoch bestens geradeaus, war insgesamt deutlich schneller und viel leiser. Dazu bietet er viel mehr Nutzwert, ohne ein bisschen langweilig zu sein. Und nicht zuletzt muss man damit nicht in eine BMW-Werkstatt fahren. :-)

Vor einem Monat ist mein iBook-Netzteil abgeraucht. Also habe ich den AppleCare Service angerufen, und geraume Zeit in der Dudelwarteschlange verbracht, bis man mir versprach, ein Ersatznetzteil zu schicken.
Und jetzt kommt die fiese Masche: Da ich ja jetzt zwei Netzteile habe, und Apple dem Kunden erst mal alles böse unterstellt, musste ich meine Kreditkartennummer angeben mit der Drohung, diese werde mit dem vollen Preis des Neugerätes belastet, wenn ich das defekte Netzteil nicht einschicke. Nunja, zwei Tage später war mein Netzteil da, ich habe das kaputte eingepackt und von UPS abholen lassen. Case closed. Tja, beinahe. Ich habe eigentlich alles richtig gemacht. Apple aber nicht.
Und deshalb kriege ich heute eine Rechnung. Apple hat meine Kreditkarte schon belastet und mir 61 Eur netto, macht 70,76 Eur brutto berechnet. Und jetzt hänge ich wieder für 12ct die Minute in der Leitung und höre mir schlechte Muzak an. Um Apple zu erklären, dass DIE ihren Job nicht gemacht haben. Der erste Mitarbeiter will jetzt erst mal meinen Beleg sehen. Per Fax. Cheri, isch 'abe gar kein Fax. Dafür hänge ich jetzt wieder in der Muzak, während Apple versucht herauszufinden, was sie falsch gemacht haben.
Update 6. Juni: Apple hat das Problem gelöst. Ich erhielt heute diese Mail:
Sehr geehrter Herr Weber,
betreffend Ihres Problems mit der Kreditkarten Abrechnung bezueglich des Netzteils Ihres iBooks, kann ich Ihnen heute mitteilen dass unserem Reparaturzentrum leider ein Fehler unterlaufen ist und den Eingang des defekten Netzteiles nicht registriert hat. Nach eingehender Pruefung freue ich mich Ihnen mitteilen zu koennen dass wir das Ersatzteil am 6 Mai. 2005 mit UPS 1Z xxx xxx xx xxxx xxx x erhalten habe.
Nach Ihrem Anruf am 03/06/2005 wurde bereits eine Eskalation an unsere Finanzabteilung geschickt mit der Bitte dass Ihnen der volle Betrag von € 70.76 auf Ihre Kreditkarte zureuckerstattet wird.
Bitte entschuldingen Sie die Unannehmlichkeiten.

New toy: Universal Wireless Keyboard

Stefan sent me a new toy: The universal wireless keyboard. It connects to your handheld wirelessly via infrared. To do this it needs two AAA batteries that are supposed to last up to four months, depending on use.
I installed the drivers on both my T3 and the Treo 650 and it worked right out of the box. The keyboard has a QUERTY layout (I am used to QWERTZ), but it is close enough to let me type at almost full speed. I once had a foldable keyboard for my Palm V, that was also very neat, but had a huge delay between typing and display. This now works just nicely. Another treat that lets me leave my notebook behind.
Workplace 2.5 Launch

I am sitting in the second row at the Workplace 2.5 launch in Frankfurt. Alistair Rennie is speaking. There are exactly 51 people in the room. Two technicians, two organizers, seven IBM speakers. 50% of the remaining 40 people are IBMers and there are five more outside of the room.
The demos we are seeing are canned presentations. The presenter does click here and there, and it is supposed to look like he is showing the real thing. He is a good at faking it. But this is a smoke and mirrors show. How disappointing. If you get to see the whole thing as well, watch for the online presence of people changing with the clicks. They all change at exactly the same time.
I talked to Alistair at lunch time. What a brilliant guy. I like him.
The French voted no, the Dutch voted no

And if anybody had asked the Germans, they would have voted no as well.
The EU in its current state is a "no event". Brussels is far. European directives usually mean more work, they don't make sense in a local context, and they are made by people nobody knows and nobody controls, but everybody pays for with a lot of tax money.
I am not surprised that people when asked will not vote to transfer more power to this structure.
Need your input around Symbian smartphones

I need to write a report about interesting software for Series 60 phones like the Nokia 66xx and UIQ phones like the SonyEricsson P910. I know my way around the Palm platform and a little bit about the Windows devices, but Symbian is terra incognita for me. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
What is the must have software, where are the interesting places to download software, what is missing in those phones and needs improvement?
Hardware is not a problem. I will get some devices to test with.

Darum steht auf dem Download-Button in T-Mobiles Shop "Get Mix" und nicht etwa "Get Song". Mix ist wohl Marketingsprech für "Lied in mieser Qualität bei dem die Hälfte fehlt und das sich auf anderen Geräten nicht abspielen lässt".
