This is my current top 3

by Volker Weber

I am keeping my Symbian updated, I am using an Android phone weekly, and I am trying abandoned platforms like the Meego-powered N9. But there is always a top 3 of phones that I rely on.

  1. iPhone 4S. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone keeps the top post. Excellent camera, software for everything that needs software, excellent build quality and design.
  2. Lumia 800. Best "phone phone". More fun than the iPhone. Not as delicate, as in "falls without breaking". Fast camera access through extra button on the side.
  3. BlackBerry 9900. Life-saving parachute. Spotty coverage (Deutsche Bahn), long days, lots of messages, the BB gets the job done. Best keyboard out there, good camera, usable browser.

All three of them are excellent on Twitter and Facebook. Only the iPhone works well with Google+. They are all very well built. They feel as expensive as they are.

Yes, no Android in the top three. The best Android phones are too big for me. My favorite is the Nexus S, but that has the #4 spot. WebOS is gone, as far as I am concerned, and with Meego vs Windows Phone, Nokia made the right choice.

If you are an IBM customer, now is the time to start talking about full ActiveSync support. Not just the "make iPhones work" variant in Lotus Traveler.

You have four months.

RIM Announces BlackBerry Mobile Fusion

by Volker Weber

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 29, 2011) - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today introduced BlackBerry(R) Mobile Fusion - the Company's next-generation enterprise mobility solution and RIM's entry into the multi-platform Mobile Device Management (MDM) marketplace. Building on years of leading enterprise mobility management solutions from RIM, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will simplify the management of smartphones and tablets running BlackBerry(R), Google(R) Android(R) and Apple(R) iOS(R) operating systems.

I have not seen it but I have to assume that Fusion integrates BES and the Ubitexx solution on the glass. Two servers, one management interface. It's a pre-announcement:

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is currently in early beta testing with select enterprise customers. RIM is now accepting customer nominations for the closed beta program which will start in January, and general availability is expected in late March.

Traveling network access

by Volker Weber

ZZ49F109F8

I used to travel with an Airport Express to extend an Ethernet wire to a full wireless network with IPv4 NAT. This lets you access the Internet with a number of devices hidden behind a common MAC address. Login once to your hotel LAN, and then enjoy Internet connection for all your devices.

Now I am trying a Belkin dual band travel router which gives me 5 GHz in addition to 2.4 GHz. "_nomap" means that Google should not be recording the access points location. When I am using my AirPort Express, Google thinks I am in Florida. Too many people have reported the AP as being at Lotusphere.

ZZ292F07FE.png

The Belkin device is smaller than the Airport Express but not as tidy. It needs a microUSB wire with 5V/1A. I have nicer power supplies than the one which ships with the router. I will probably use the Nokia charger.

Schneier on Security: Android Malware

I believe that smart phones are going to become the primary platform of attack for cybercriminals in the coming years. As the phones become more integrated into people’s lives — smart phone banking, electronic wallets — they’re simply going to become the most valuable device for criminals to go after. And I don’t believe the iPhone will be more secure because of Apple’s rigid policies for the app store.

Noch nicht überzeugt: Mobile Tankstellen

by Volker Weber

Belkin Camera Grip for the iPhone 4

by Volker Weber

Dekompression

by Volker Weber

So etwa gestern.

Ende gut, alles gut.

Dogfood? Nah. Not really.

Anil Dash: Facebook is gaslighting the web. We can fix it

by Volker Weber

Facebook has moved from merely being a walled garden into openly attacking its users' ability and willingness to navigate the rest of the web. The evidence that this is true even for sites which embrace Facebook technologies is overwhelming, and the net result is that Facebook is gaslighting users into believing that visiting the web is dangerous or threatening.

In this post I intend to not only document the practices which enable this attack, but to also propose a remedy.

BlackBerry: es ist noch nicht vorbei

by Volker Weber

ZZ584F7884

Was ich überwiegend ignoriere. Ausnahme: pinch to zoom.

BlackBerry wird von vielen Leuten tot gesagt. Ich vermute, die Auguren haben gar keinen.

Lumia 800 ab sofort im Handel

by Volker Weber

Editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award? ;-)

Was fehlt? Google+ App und Sonos Controller. Workarounds: Basic Web Interface und Phonos.

Was fehlt bis auf weiteres? Mobile Hotspot und Mix Radio. Nokia arbeitet dran.

Was fehlt dauerhaft?

Above the fold (Google Reader), Adobe Reader, DB Navigator, Evernote, Facebook, Flickr, HRS, IMDb, Phonos, Pocket Recorder, Twitter, Weather, WhatsApp, YouTube. Mehr brauche ich nicht.

Dickes Plus: Nokia Drive.

Sorry, Magenta.

Replacing a Nokia Lumia 800 is not as easy as I thought it would be

by Volker Weber

Nokia replaced my pre-preductions review unit with a final production unit. My plan was to backup the "old" phone and restore to the new one. That's how it works on iPhones. When you connect a new one, it asks you if you would like to restore from an existing backup.

Windows Phone 7 connector did not do that. So I dug through the application support directories on my iMac and found three devices: the HTC Trophy, the old Lumia and the new one. I copied the backup from the old Lumia to the new directory, but that would not work either.

So I am going to start a new configuration. Rrrrrrrrr.

Camera Advice

by Volker Weber

Michael asked for my opinion on buying a DSLR vs a compact prosumer camera. Here is my answer:

Short answer: get an iPhone 4S.

Long answer: I own several cameras, but the iPhone is the only camera that lives in my pocket. And it puts consumer cameras to shame. If you do need pro equipment, look for a full format sensor (24x36 mm) and start with a 50mm/f1.4 lens. Add more glass as you go. 105mm (or 70-200mm), then 20mm (or 12-24mm). Most people get tricked into buying an SLR with a cheap kit lens. Once you bought that kit, you will still shoot 99% of your photos with the iPhone.

Replace the iPhone with a Lumia 800 if you want Windows Phone, N9 if you want Meego, N8 if you want Symbian. Don't know any decent Android camera.
