Hersteller X schickt über seine Agentur Y eine Pressemitteilung und bietet Rezensionsexemplar an. Journalist ist interessiert. Verabredet mit der Redaktion einen Artikel und bestellt bei der Agentur Y ein Produkt. Rückmeldung binnen 30 Minuten: "Ist schon unterwegs".
Keine Verwunderung, denn die Agentur Y kann sowas bewiesenermaßen. Das heißt deshalb normalerweise: Am nächsten Morgen klingelt sehr ungeduldig ein Kurier, der ein eiliges Paket loswerden will. Nicht so in diesem Fall. Auch eine Woche später, nach mehreren Nachfragen, ist nichts angekommen außer ständigen Beteuerungen: "Aber heute ist es wirklich raus".
Wie sich heute herausstellt, hat sich Agentur Y auf Aussagen des Herstellers X verlassen, der wiederum seinem Distributor Z vertraut hat. Die Aussagen, das Paket sei unterwegs, waren aber keineswegs Vollzugsmeldungen, sondern vielmehr hoffnungsvolle Prognosen, das werde wohl heute noch klappen. Hat es aber nicht. Wie checkt man das nach? Man läßt sich eine Tracking Number für das Paket geben. Das ist dann der Moment, wo es zum Schwur kommt. Ergebnis: Das Paket steht immer noch dort und geht dann hoffentlich morgen auf die Reise.
Kleiner Merkzettel für Hersteller A, B und C: Man liefert eine Palette der beworbenen Produkte an die Agentur und versucht das nicht alles selber zu machen. Die Agentur kann sowas. Hersteller anscheinend nicht. Und dann besteht immer die Gefahr von Abzügen in der B-Note.

Luis has alerted me of the fact that Microsoft has published a website with most of the TechEd 2004 presentations.
In typical Redmond fashion it only runs on Internet Explorer on Windows and Netscape 7 (wtf is that?). It says it will also run on the Mac, which isn't true. Let me put in some tags, because nobody gets sarcasm without: <sarcasm> Now this is a very demanding act: A directory of presentations created in PowerPoint where you can download the PPT files or look at them online as HTML. This is really, really hard to do without depending on a particular type of browser. But there is some excellent developers out there who can tackle the task with cutting edge technology only available in the world's most advanced browsers. </sarcasm>
Looking into the distortion field

There was no webcast and no satellite broadcast of Steve's ceremony keynote yesterday. Which kind of helps to stay out of the reality distortion field. So, what are the news?
- Three new screens. Finally a match for the G5. One of them is really, really huge — and expensive. But ladies, this isn't rocket science. Apple does not make the screens. They design the enclosure. The glas is made by Samsung, or LG, or ... If Apple had not been sitting on warehouses full of old screens, there is hardly anything that could have taken them so long to come out with the two "smaller" screens at the same time as the G5.
- Tiger, a new version of the operating system. In the first half of 2005. That can be as much as one year from today, with one day to spare. I see a number of reports that Apple users are now able to read their RSS feeds in Safari. Hello? This isn't now. It's quite a long way out actually.
- Tiger server. Also due out next year. I am not going into details, but amongst them is a blog server.
There is very interesting technology in Tiger. You can see most of it in Apple's online demo, some of it as video. The eye candy, you can buy today for $25. Redmond Cupertino, start your photocopiers.

Ich muss ihm ausdrücklich zu Gute halten, dass er das selbst geschrieben hat, statt gleich Juristen einzuschalten. "Meta-Tags, down-Loadoptionen und den Ausschnitt selbst" hat es hier nicht gegeben. Sehr wohl aber einen Link, was jeder "strafrechtlichen Klärung" standhält. Da ich keinen Streit suche, habe ich den Link trotzdem entfernt.

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, hieß die Forderung mal "35 Stunden mit vollem Lohnausgleich". Gemeint war, jeden Tag eine Stunde weniger zu arbeiten, aber den selben Lohn zu kassieren. Und wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe, dann heißt "ohne Lohnausgleich" jetzt, jeden Tag wieder eine Stunde mehr zu arbeiten und genauso viel Lohn zu bekommen. Aber wieso einmal "mit Ausgleich" und einmal "ohne Ausgleich"?

Das US-CERT und das Internet Storm Center (ISC) melden eine erhöhte Zahl von Einbrüchen in Webserver, auf denen Microsofts Internet Information Server (IIS) läuft. Die Einbrecher manipulieren die Server derart, dass sie an die ausgelieferten Seiten spezielle JavaScripte anhängen. Die HMTL-Dokumente selbst werden nicht manipuliert. Die Scripte nutzen nach derzeitigen Erkenntnissen zwei bekannte, aber noch nicht gestopfte Sicherheitslücken im Internet Explorer aus, um den Besucher schon beim Besuch der Seite mit dem Trojaner RAT zu infizieren. RAT liest unter anderem die Tastatureingaben mit und sendet sie an Server ins Internet und öffnet zusätzlich eine Backdoor.

Aber wie kommt man auf 25000 Besucher beim Linuxtag? (Link meistens tot) Man zählt die Leute am Eingang. Egal wie oft sie rein- und rausgehen. So ist es mir jedenfalls heute in Karlsruhe gegangen. Und da ich je zweimal in der Gartenhalle und der Stadthalle war, you get the drift ...
War interessant. IBM war fast gar nicht da, HP dafür mit einem dicken Stand. Sun auch, Apple mit einem kleinen, Microsoft auch. Microsoft hatte auch eine lange Vortragsreihe, die viele Zuhörer fand. .Net-Entwicklung und so. Wie bei jeder Linux-Veranstaltung sah ich zwei Welten, die sich nicht verstehen. Auf der einen Seite Jungprogrammierer und Althippies, auf der anderen Seite Schlipse, die gerne ein Geschäft machen wollen. Dazwischen fast nichts.
Kaum fünf Minuten in der Ausstellung, rief jemand "Volker". Beate. Einen Schlips hatte sie nicht an. Und alt ist sie schon gar nicht. :-)
Einen Riesenstapel Zeitungen habe ich mitgebracht.

Ich bin ein Mann. Mit mir schwätzt man nicht über Probleme, um eine Lösung zu finden. Das kann man nur mit Frauen. Zu Männern bringt man nur Probleme, die man nicht lösen konnte. Je trivialer die dann sind, desto mehr "Uschi" siehst Du aus.

Lotus Notes lädt Code von fremden Systemen nach

Durch eine Sicherheitslücke in IBMs Groupware-Lösung Lotus Notes können Angreifer unter bestimmten Umständen verwundbaren Clients dazu bringen, beliebigen Code über das Netzwerk zu laden und auszuführen. Dazu genügt es, ein manipuliertes HTML-Dokument zu öffnen. Die Schwachstelle ist in den Versionen 6.0.3 und 6.5 zu finden. IBM hat dazu ein Advisory veröffentlicht und weist darauf hin, dass der Fehler in 6.0.4 and 6.5.2 behoben ist.

The US Senate was used for a bizarre ritual in which the Rev Sun Myung Moon, the head of the Unification church, was "crowned" and declared himself the messiah in the presence of more than a dozen Republican and Democratic members of Congress, it was reported yesterday.
"Emperors, kings and presidents ... have declared to all heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's saviour, messiah, returning Lord and true parent," the 85-year-old Korean "Moonie" cult leader told several hundred guests at the meeting in one of the Senate's office buildings on March 23, according to the Washington Post.
He also claimed endorsement from Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler, who had all been reformed and reborn through his church's teachings - an idiosyncratic version of Christianity which rejects the use of the cross as a symbol and denounces homosexuals as "dirty dung-eating dogs".
The glittering event in the Senate's Dirksen building reflected Mr Moon's extraordinary influence in US politics. He owns the conservative newspaper the Washington Times and the US news agency United Press International.

Gestern war IBM-Tag in Frankfurt. Zur Erinnerung: Die Helden der Software-Group haben es geschafft, zwei Veranstaltungen zum selben Thema am selben Tag und in der selben Stadt zu planen. Ja ja, die eine war für die Entwickler und die andere für die Manager. Schon kapiert, alles Absicht. ;-)
Jedenfalls war der Rucksack hinterher gefüllt mit viel Papier (Entwickler) und einem Memory Stick mit den Präsentationen (Manager). Und wie sich das so für Nobelhotels gehört, gab es da auch Hottschpotts, nur keine coolen Kids. Ich muss sagen, das Freibier, das die Telekom hier ausschenkt, hat vorzüglich geschmeckt. Man sollte nicht vergessen, sich vor dem Ablauf einer Stunde einen neuen Hottschpott klarzumachen, dann kann es gleich weitergehen. Ich nehme an, dass sich die Nutzung der Zugänge gestern glatt verdoppelt hat. Nur nicht der Umsatz. Aber das hatten wir ja schon.

iPod your Bimmer

Apple has released a web page that details what you can do with an iPod and your BMW. It's got to be a 2002 and later 3 Series, X3 or X5 tank, Z4 or a Mini. You put the iPod on a loose cable in the glove compartment. I assume it is dumbed down to a CD changer, because you can only play five BMW playlists from your stereo. And that's not all:
Not available on vehicles with navigation system, CD changer, DSP cassette player or satellite radio. Installation performed by authorized BMW and BMW SAV centers only.
That would not earn the editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award. :-)

Even Steve does not get it

Reading Cory's talk (read/listen) about why DRM is bad for Microsoft, I struck me as odd, that even Steve does not get it. I mean, he almost gets it. He gets the rest, but he does not get the DRM part.
I recently talked about a brand new CD that would not play. Once I ripped the CD and burned the tracks back on a blank CD without the copy protection it would play. The commercial product was 20 times more expensive than the one I produced but it was much worse. For a simple reason: it breakes the technical standard. The only person who suffers is the customer who bought the product. Whoever steals the tracks is unaffected. He gets a much better deal than the honest customer. (For those concerned: Under German law I can copy the CD. Even if I give the copy to a friend.)
Steve talked a lot about why the iTMS is a better product. I have my doubts, for a simple reason. Everything you buy from iTMS is locked with a proprietary DRM. It will only play on iTunes or on an iPod. Cory explains how he got stuck without access to his music. iTMS tracks are not like a CD that will play everywhere. (Yes, you can make one.) If you get the very same track from somewhere else without the DRM, in MP3 instead of AAC, you have a better product.
So, if you buy something from iTMS, I would advise that you immediately — repeat: immediately — convert it to a better product. If you don't do that, you will feel the pain much later.

Have phone, will travel

Roaming charges can be substantial when travelling in foreign countries. In Germany I would advise to buy a prepaid chip from one of the major providers (T-Mobil, Vodafone, E-Plus or O2). If you don't have a GSM phone, you can buy a (locked) phone with the chip for as little as 29 EUR. You can then buy additional airtime from most gas stations (and of course the provider shops).
I talked to Nick about whether that would be advisable in the UK as well, and he agreed. Did not know the details and warned me that coverage in the Northwest of Scotland may be spotty.
Does anyone of you know details about the mobile market in the UK? If I want to buy a card, do I need to be a UK resident? How do I buy additional airtime? What is a good deal? I would need to place national phone calls at all times during the day.

Apple teams up with BMW on iPod adapter

Following up on our story earlier today regarding upcoming auto solutions for the iPod, MacMinute has obtained a two-page joint advertisement from Apple and BMW for a new iPod car adapter. The ad reads: "The first seamless integration of iPod and automobile. Connect with your music like never before. With the installation of an integrated adapter developed by BMW and Apple -- now available for the BMW 3 Series, X3 and Z4 -- you can control your iPod through the existing audio system and multi-function steering wheel.
While there are rumours that Apple is also working with other car makers, it should be noted that Steve Jobs is an outspoken BMW fan.
6A reworks licensing for MovableType 3

Introductory prices become standard prices and 6A creates new unlimted author/weblog licenses. If I upgraded vowe.net to MT 3, it would now cost $100 (- 5 marketing cents). This is much more reasonable than the first plan.
However, I am not upgrading. This site freezes at 2.661 until there is a need to migrate. Such a need would arise if there is an unpatched security hole.

Surprise, surprise: iTMS sells for .99 EUR

iTMS opens localized stores for France, Germany and the UK. The rest of Europe is supposed to follow by October.
Apple is always good for a surprise. While the pundits predicted that iTMS would sell songs for 1.19 or 1.29 EUR a song, most likely for covering the high cost of transporting bits across the Atlantic, it now turns out that Apple will ask 0.99 EUR for a track and 9.99 EUR for an album. That is currently 20 % more than in the US but it already includes the VAT that would be 16% in Germany.
If they only started to do the same for hardware.
The UK prices are actually higher: 79 Pence which is about 1.20 EUR. Well, they did not want the Euro in the first place. :-)

There is a new computer in the house

Friday night I moved all of the data and some remaining applications from Ute's old Samsung Q10 to the new Dell X300. They are both very similar but the Dell has a nicer finish. The new machine is faster, has a larger disk, and adds Bluetooth as well as an SD slot. Both come in handy when connecting to the XDA2 smart phone.
The biggest change however is going from a custom Windows 2000 build to a supported XP build which adds her machine to the standard company environment. And I found this build to be very well done. The machine is quick to boot, although it has an encrypted disk as well as a virus shield, a firewall, and a VPN. I have seen much worse at other companies.

But if you can put the infamous Intel and designed-for-trash-bins stickers next to the screen, chances are the screen is too small. 10.4 inches in case of the new sleek Vaio. Plus, if you put the keyboard in the front of the unit, you can't work in an airline seat. Unless you are as thin as this machine. Too thin for an Ethernet jack BTW.

Weird Windows problem

I have come across a problem with my Windows 2000 Server that I cannot get a grip on. Here is what is happening: The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE key cannot be opened. In Regedit the little plus sign in front of "Software" goes away. A reboot cures the problem and after a few days the key becomes unavailable again. I have absolutely no clue of what is going on.
Any ideas?

Am Wochenende ist wohl mal jemandem kurz das Gehirn entgleist. An die täglichen Angebote zur Verbesserung von Körperteilen, Kreditlinien etc. hat man sich ja schon gewöhnt.
Diese Probleme sind vermeidbar. Auch unter Windows. Hier steht, wie das geht.
Wie sehen denn die Alternativen aus? Mac OS, Linux? Ich glaube, das geht am Kern des Problems vorbei. Ich habe es schon einmal an anderer Stelle geschrieben: Komplizierte Technik in der Hand überforderter Menschen. Jaja, früher war alles besser. Als wir noch die config.sys auswendig wussten und immer genau ein Programm lief. Aber damals haben wir noch die Grafiken in den Text geklebt und jedes Programm hatte eigene Druckertreiber.
Wenn es nach den diversen Heilsbringern geht, heisst die Lösung: Freiheit aufgeben. In verschiedensten Spielarten. Managed Code, Portale etc. Auf Euren Handys könnt Ihr sehen, wie so was aussieht. Vodafone und T-Mobil managen das Handy.
Die Industrie träumt von braven Konsumenten, die man melken kann. Warum haben alle bezahlbaren DSL-Angebote eine asymmetrische Struktur mit achtfach schnellerem Downstream als Upstream? Warum dienen die T* derzeit 2 und 3 MBit an und verschlechtern das Verhältnis sogar noch? Technische Gründe hat das nicht. Wenn ich auf einmal 2 MBit haben kann, warum dann nicht ein MBit zu mir und ein MBit von mir weg? Weil ich bitteschön konsumieren und nicht produzieren soll. Ich soll Leistungen nachfragen und nicht anbieten. Dabei fliessen in der Summe weit mehr Daten von mir weg als zu mir hin.
Microsoft kann man sicher einiges vorwerfen. Aber wenn irgendein Unternehmen dieser Branche einen Beitrag geleistet hat, aus Konsumenten auch Produzenten zu machen, dann war es Microsoft. Und Apple steht dem kaum nach. Was die "Kundenbindung" angeht, tun sich Apple und Microsoft nicht viel. Die einen hätten gerne WMA, die anderen gerne AAC. Die einen WMV, die andern MOV. Beide meiden gerne Standards.
Jetzt suche bitte keiner sein Heil bei den Leuten, die gerade am lautesten auf Standards pochen. :-)

Battery life on the Treo 600

I admit I was a bit afraid that battery life on the Treo 600 might not be good enough, but it turned out not to be the case. Usually I sync it every day and the time that I have it connected to the USB cable is enough to top off the battery. I never really checked how long that is though.
Now I installed BatteryGraph to see how long it would run without the recharge and did not connect the phone to the Mac for a couple of days. The picture above shows you that it runs down the battery by 50% in less than four days, while being "on" for two hours and the rest as standby. That is actually pretty good. It means I can take it on a short business trip without the charger.

Wi-Fi: If Not Free, Then How?

For surviving Wi-Fi players to remain afloat, Yunker believes, they'll have to change their business models, offer more all-you-can-surf plans and cut prices. For those who do charge, he believes customers will be comfortable paying rates of about $4 a month for unlimited access to a network of hot spots.
Today, such a price point is out of line with reality. Two of the largest Wi-Fi services, T-Mobile HotSpot and Boingo Wireless, charge $30 a month for unlimited use, not including a $10 discount T-Mobile offers to its cellular customers. In exchange, customers get to connect their laptops at a network of airports, hotels, restaurants and other locales.
That would be $20 for T-Mobile customers today. Nationwide, unlimited. Well, Telekom Germany will give me five hours for 17,10 EUR which is a wee bit more than $20. But not for all of Europe but Germany only. Unlimited is not even available.
And customers would pay $4 per month all-you-can-surf. I guess the marketing guys at Telekom still have a lot to learn.

Letzte Woche fragte ich, ob jemand einen abgelegten Access Point entbehren kann. Ich bedanke mich für alle freundlichen Angebote. Das erste kam von Marco und er hat mir Ende letzter Woche dann einen ELSA IL-11 zugeschickt, der heute morgen eintraf. Einmal Factory Reset, neue Firmware aufgespielt und das Ding ist einsatzbereit.
Marco ist nicht nur sehr hilfsbereit, sondern er gehört auch zu den Leuten, die ich frage, wenn ich nicht mehr weiterkomme. Und deshalb sei an dieser Stelle etwas Werbung für seine Firma gemacht. Danke!

All the rumor sites have been predicting new PowerMacs, iMacs, iTMS Europe. Then Apple proves again that those guys only extrapolate from curves. Without advance notice they drop a small bomb: The Airport Express. It takes a while to understand what this small gadget does:
Enjoy your iTunes music library in virtually any room of your house. Share a single broadband Internet connection and USB printer without inconvenient and obtrusive cables. Create an instant wireless network on the go. Extend the range of your current wireless network. How many devices do you need to do all this? Just one.
So what is it?
- It is an access point. A very small one, that does not need an external power supply. You plug it into the wall and an ethernet cable. It will extend this connection to all wireless devices within range.
- It is a wireless repeater. So if you need to extend the range of your wireless network, you just plug the device into a wall outlet.
- It is a print server. Plug a printer into the USB port and you can share the printer over the network.
- It is an audio streamer. Plug your stereo (or a set of powered speakers) into the audio out and you can stream your iTunes library there.
And of course it is all of the above at the same time. Plug your stereo, your internet connection and your printer into the device and you can start accessing all of those things from your notebook. This can be an essential you want to have in your travel bag.
Did I say, I want one? Make that two. Or half a dozen.

Linksys WRT54G with SNMP and VPN

It was about time that I upgraded my Linksys router to a more capable firmware. I was missing two things badly:
1. An SNMP management interface
2. A VPN server
So I chose to install Wifibox Firmware 2.02.pre1. That has been very smooth sailing. Now I am finally able to monitor traffic on the Linksys router, a feature I have been missing badly when I moved away from the Zyxel Prestige 310 router. Once you have an SNMP interface you can graph data with MRTG like this:
Of course you can monitor many other things like processes, memory, temperature or whatever your SNMP daemon provides.
VPN is another story. I was always looking for a patch that would allow the router to forward incoming traffic on TCP 1723 / GRE 47 to my internal server and terminate the VPN there. That has always failed with my port forwarding. Now I simply terminate the VPN at the router which makes a lot more sense.
This has worked much better than I thought it would.
When a blog is not a blog

Ed Brill has two blogs. One is private, one is hosted by IBM prominently linked from the Lotus home page. I would argue that the private blog is not private and the IBM blog is not a blog. I will not try to define what blog is, I just don't perceive it as one.
In my opinion the IBM "blog" is not a blog. It is PR done right. It puts a positive spin on Lotus products and events, but it does not follow the completely useless press release scheme. However there is hardly any interaction with readers, there are no comments, no trackbacks from somewhere else. Last but not least it is not updated often enough and is not connected into the blogsphere.
The "private" blog has all of that. It walks like a blog, quacks like a blog ... but it is not private. While Ed has all the glimpses of "Ed, the person" contrasting his "Ed, the IBM guy", he is not able to act freely. On an IBM site he would not be able to rant about MS TechEd as he can do on his own site, because IBM never does that. But there have been occasions where this has backfired. If you call somebody an idiot, and the idiot does not get back to you but to your boss's boss, then you are quickly in deep trouble. So he has to make a few tough choices. He can stay on the edge and risk the occasional slap on the wrist. Or he has to brace himself to IBM rules and do what he has done on the IBM blog and add some personal stuff. Today he has just hinted at the possibility that his IBM "blog" might go away.
vowe.net actually has the same issues. You will see me rant about many things, but you will never see me mention a client. I simply ignore those topics since they would interfer with my business. I have been asked occasionally by a client to cross over from consultant to journalist (or been warned not to do so), but I am keeping very strict barriers between those worlds. So there is vowe(consultant), vowe(author), vowe(public) and a few other domains that I never mention here. So while many of you may think that you know me, that is actually not true. You may know vowe, but you don't know Volker.
Testing international calls with Voice over IP

Kevin Savetz, a freelance writer based in California, asked me whether I would test a few VoIP providers internationally. I was on a regular phone and he used his VoIP phone.
The really interesting part however was, that we used iChat AV as permanent channel. And that worked very naturally on first contact. We both could see what we were doing over an extended period of time. Absolutely free.

Schrottveredelung

Da schiebe ich doch heute eine Musik-CD in das Superdrive von Lucy und die kriegt Schluckauf. Probieren wir das ganze nochmal mit Snoopy. Bingo. Der zeigt nicht nur eine CD, sondern gleich zwei: die Audio CD und eine mit dem Namen COPYXA. Schnell mal auf die Hülle geschaut. Aha, die Musikindustrie bei der Kundenverarschpflege. Damit der sein gerade gekauftes Produkt so richtig genießen kann.
Nun, nachdem diese Schrott-CD von iTunes verarbeitet wurde, kann ich eine ganz wunderbare standardkonforme CD produzieren, die jedes Gerät abspielen kann. Qualitätsverlust? Niente. Jedenfalls nicht wenn man nach AIFF oder Lossless Encoder umwandelt. Eine heimgebrannte CD für 10 ct ist also besser als die im Laden erworbene für das Zweihundertfache? Wie sagte noch mal Dirk Bach so schön bei der Echo-Verleihung?
Und Ihr wundert Euch, dass es Euch schlecht geht.

Machst du dir Hottschpott klar

Ich müsste da noch mal auf die tolle Hottschpott-Seite der Telekom zurückkommen.
Wie wir diese Woche überall lesen konnten, ist das ja noch nicht so doll mit den Hotspot-Umsätzen. Und da das ja nicht an dem tollen Produkt liegen kann, und man ja auch aufpassen muss, dass man sich die Umsätze in 3G-Netzen (UMTS) nicht kaputt macht, darf man ja an den Preisen auch nicht so viel drehen.
Nun würde die Telekom ja gerne den DSL-Kunden das Privileg schmackhaft machen, 3 Stunden kostenlos solche Hotspots zu nutzen, oder genauer, nicht so ganz kostenlos, sondern für 9,90 EUR im Monat. Also die Stunde zu 3,30 EUR, wobei natürlich die nicht genutzten, aber bezahlten Minuten vergessen werden. Will man mehr als drei Stunden, dann kostet das nur 6 ct die Minute, oder eben 3,60 die Stunde, was ziemlich nah an den nicht so ganz kostenlosen ersten drei Stunden liegt.
Jetzt ist es ja gar nicht so besonders schwer, Hotspots "für umme" zu nutzen, indem man einfach mal Ausschau nach gastfreundlichen Netzen hält. Das klappt überall da ganz gut, wo freundliche und ahnungslose Mitmenschen wohnen, aber eben nicht da, wo sie arbeiten oder verreisen.
Und da kommt jetzt der bekanntlich kostenlose erste Schuss zum Einsatz. Also, die Telekom stellt sich das so vor: Man registriert sich auf der supercoolen Webseite, und dann checkt man mal das Surfen für eine Stunde. Und danach zahlt man dann.
Muss man aber nicht. Man kann sich ja einfach noch einen ersten kostenlosen Schuss holen. Und danach noch einen, etc. Einfach registrieren. Dazu denkt man sich 'ne schicke Kennung aus, also etwa a54d9 und die kopiert man dann noch mal schnell in die drei nächsten Felder, hängt sich hinten ein @mailinator.com an, erste Checkbox aus, zweite an und ab dafür. Dann noch die Captcha-Abfrage auf der nächsten Seite eingeben und zuletzt den Pass anfordern. Aufwand: weniger als 1 Minute. Benutzername und Passwort holt man sich dann bei Mailinator ab.
Und damit die Telekom sich ganz arg freut über den tollen Erfolg dieser Aktion, müsst Ihr jetzt alle ganz fleissig registrieren. Und weitersagen, damit das auch alle anderen Freunde so machen. Und dann hat die Telekom ganz viele, ganz coole Typen registriert. Echt super, was?
Nur mit den Umsätzen ist das dann immer noch nicht so doll. Und dann bereitet wieder jemand drei neue Umschläge vor.
PS: Ab jetzt wird zurückgeduzt. Welcher Trendscout hat Euch eigentlich erzählt, dass coole Kids an Flughäfen oder in Hotels rumhängen und da mit ihrem Rechner surfen wollen? Die haben doch Handys und werden schon mit SMS und Klingeltönen abgezockt. Wenn Ihr mich mal fragt: Eure Kunden sind Geschäftsleute, die schon wieder auf 'nen Zug warten, oder auf den Flieger. Und solange die P0rn0s im Hotel billiger sind als Eure Internet-Zugänge, wird das auch nix. Check?

Bisher war die Denglische Bank für mich immer der Spitzenreiter der pseudomodernen Sprachverwurstung. Aber die Telekom kann es noch besser, inklusive vertraulicher Ansprache:
Du hast vergessen, unseren Nutzungsbedingungen und Datenschutzbestimmungen zuzustimmen.
Und eine Stunde ganz cooles Hottschpottsörfen kriegt man für eine Registrierung umsonst. Wer mehr braucht, registriert sich einfach noch ein paar hundert mal. Wird sicher ein gaaaanz toller Erfolg, Ihr Marketingfuzzis.
Why Wikipedia sucks. Big time.

Wikipedia generates noise, not knowledge. Previous encyclopedias were well-researched and contained precise information that could be trusted to be correct. Wikipedia, on the other hand, contains a large amount of errors, omissions and superfluous trivia.
Basically, what is happening here is the building of a parallel World Wide Web inside the wikipedia.org domain and calling it an "encyclopedia", which is a total perversity. Just making it searchable and giving it an encyclopedia-like structure doesn't make its content any less fluffy, error-ridden and amateurish than any other website.
How to make sure your comments get deleted

I had to delete a few comments again, so please let me repost the obvious.
- This site is free (as in free beer). Anybody can come in and read it.
- I do not require registration to read the site.
- Readers have the opportunity to publish comments.
- I do not require registration to publish on my site.
- I keep an audit trail of any such publication.
- I reserve the right to delete any such publication. The site is not free (as in free speech).
- I make some efforts to lock out abusive robots publishing on the site.
- I ask the commentator to leave a name. This is mandatory. If a commentator tries to publish anonymously, rule #6 is applied.
- I ask the commentator to leave an email address that I can reply to. This is mandatory. I never publish this address to protect the commentator from receiving spam.
- I give each commentator the opportunity to publish his site address. I automatically link to this site to make it convenient for the commentator to promote his site.
Rule #8 says "tries to" because posts are never anonymous. Some commentators found out the hard way. While anybody can leave false information, it should at least look reasonably correct, in an effort to not draw my curiosity.
Besides these 10 simple rules, I also ask for some respect. If a commentator leaves his full name or a unique nickname, I find this preferable. If the email address he leaves does not try to stick out a tongue to me, I find this preferable as well.
If a prospective commentator does not like these rules, he can remain a reader.

Mir ist ein 802.11b Access Point abgeraucht. Der stand so strategisch günstig, dass ich in der Mittagspause auch nicht aus der Welt war und auch mal etwas länger sitzen bleiben konnte. Bevor wir jetzt einen neuen anschaffen: Hat jemand sowas in der Ecke verstauben? Unter 54 MBit und Access Router tut's doch heute keiner mehr. :-) Wenn ja, würde ich mich über die Spende freuen.

Gas prices are now past 1.20 EUR per liter. Let's do some quick math for our American friends: At 3.78 liters per gallon and $1.20 per EUR that translates to roughly $5.50 per gallon. I still see new BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, VW Tuareg on our roads. So if Germans can't get smart at these prices, how can we expect others who pay much less to wisen up?
Obviously it is not the money spent at the gas pump, that will stop this nonsense. What else will?

Sick and tired

I started locking out a quarter of the world's population from my site. That is everybody from China.
I'm just so sick and tired of attempts to abuse my site. It turns out that more than 98% of all attempts of comment spam, abuse of my free wiki, and abusive spiders originate from Chinese networks. They all try to earn Google juice by adding links to their own sites.
Game over. I am locking out all networks that attempt to abuse my site after the first offense.

BMW 1 Series

BMW is poised to come out with a new entry level car in the third quarter. Two observations:
- Pricing starts at 20.000 EUR for the smallest engine. Add a couple of thousand for options you can't live without.
- It looks like they hit the car from both sides before it leaves the factory.
But I still think it is going to be a big hit with people who buy BMWs.
