Although I have been in the same room with John Chen a number of times, I watched every minute of this intelligent interview, and I am glad I did. John Chen is the best industry leader I know, and I have met quite a few of them.
In this interview he answers two questions about BlackBerry's plans with Android in the most charming way. He does not flatly come back with a "I cannot comment on future plans and products" as most other CEOs would do. Instead he enables you to construct a solution inside your own brain without announcing anything. After you heard him, you will know that BlackBerry might be onto something really great: a more secure version of the Android experience, with all the Android apps out there.
That's what may be on your mind after having seen all the leaks about the Venice slider with a BlackBerry launcher. But John Chen has so much more to say. Bürger mit mehrere Vornamen, bei denen aber nicht der erste Vorname auch der gebräuchliche (meist geburtsurkundlich bestimmte) Rufname ist, freuen sich über eine Umbenennung. Die Speicherung der Fingerabdrücke in diesem Dokument ist freiwillig und wird nach entsprechender Belehrung in der Regel abgelehnt, sodass der nPA dann nicht mehr einem ePass gleichberechtigt ist. Der Ausweis könnte theoretisch auch eine qualifizierte elektronische Signatur enthalten, mit der Bürger rechtssicher Dokumente signieren und schützenswerte Dokumente verschlüsseln könnten. Praktisch jedoch wird der Ausweis ohne eine solche QES ausgeliefert und muss nachträglich kostenpflichtig bei einem Zertifizierungsdiensteanbieter nachgeladen werden. Das deutsche Signaturgesetz (SigG) hätte der Herr Staatssekretär sicher auch als Standortvorteil gelobt, wenn die meisten Zertifizierungsdiensteanbieter nicht mangels Umsatz ihren Betrieb eingestellt hätten.
Dieses Drama steht den Anbietern von De-Mail, dem auf E-Mail-Technik beruhenden, hiervon aber technisch getrennten Kommunikationsmittels, erst noch bevor. Bislang lassen sich nur Schnäppchenportalnutzer mit Zalando-Gutscheinen dazu verleiten, sich eine De-Mail-Adresse zu "sichern". Wer einen solchen Vertrag abgeschlossen hat, kann ihn nur mit klassischen Mitteln wieder loswerden:

Pebble auf der IFA

Mein Problem mit den neuen Pebbles ist der Preis. Knapp 300 € für die Time Steel, 50 € weniger für die Time, das ist arg dicht an der Apple Watch. Das Original liegt aktuell um die 100 €, in USA wurde sie bei Target schon für $50 gesehen. Das ist eine ganze andere Dimension.

90 days with Apple Watch

I have been using Apple Watch for 90 days. Why I know it's 90 days? We'll get to that later. There have been some surprises, but generally speaking, it has exceeded my expectations. I do not want to be without it.
One of the things that have changed very quickly was my watchface. At first I added four 'complications': battery status, outside temperature, activity tracking and stop watch. Then I quickly found out that I needed neither one. Battery is not a problem, outside temperature is not that important, activities let me know when I reach them and a stop watch? Yeah, right. So I chose a very simple watchface shown to the left above. The other one is the watch face when I am traveling. It shows my home time zone (Ute), the temperature (in the US you can hardly ever know because it's always freezing inside) and my next appointment. I also put numbers on the watch face so I am not messing with am/pm time notation.
I use one third party app on the watch. Just one. That's Outlook. It just works very well. That of course means I also use Outlook on the iPhone. Again, a very decent app. The only surprising thing is that its calendar does not obey the 24h time format I set on the iPhone.
Most of my interaction between Watch and me happens in glances. Glances are panels below the watchface. Swipe up and you get to the last used glance. As you can see, I am only using seven: Settings, Now Playing, Heartbeat, Activty, Outlook, Weather and Battery. The Battery glance is the only place you can see how much juice is left in the battery, and frankly, you don't need to know. Just charge Watch at night for an hour. For me it lasts two days. The Settings glance lets you set Flight Mode, Do Not Disturb and Silence. And you can ping your phone. It will make a sonar sound so you can find out where you left it.
My favorite preinstalled app is Activity. You know that since I have been going on and on about it. It's simply the best activity tracker I have seen so far. And I have seen a few.
I have not missed a single day without achieving all three goals. And since I get a Longest Move Streak award every single day, I know that I have been wearing Apple Watch for 90 days. The move streak is actually quite longer. The last time I did not meet my move goal was last October, and that's more than 300 days ago.
Notifications is the other big use case. I have tailored my notifications quite well, so the watch does not interrupt my flow. That's very personal. Some people will want to know about each and every email they get, every new follower, etc. But Watch makes it quite easy. Every time you receive a notification where you think 'ah, I did not need to know this right now' you just go ahead and tune your notifications. After a few days you will have it all sorted out.
The one thing that I am not really using at all is the friends button under the digital crown. There is a simple reason: I use Siri instead. It has become quite natural to tell the watch what to do. 'Set an alarm for 7:30'. Boom. Done. 'Set timer to 10 minutes'. Boom. Done. Yes, you can do that on your phone. But that is not attached to you. Or it may be attached to you, but not to me. Speaking of which, I often answer the phone from Apple Watch. And that works way better than I expected. I don't really know how it does it (I assume Wifi), but I can be quite far away from the iPhone and still answer it. Talking to your watch feels a bit funny at first, but then becomes very convenient.
I am very much looking forward to watchOS 2. There will be more and better apps once the SDK becomes available.
The Windows Phone ‘Twilight Zone’

Windows Phone 8.1 ... is essentially tombstoned at this point. Windows 10 needs to come to mobile in a way that excites people, and then it will have a chance of success.
As much as I loved the 930, 1020 & 1520 Lumias, it seems very unlikely that is going to happen. Microsoft has been asleep at the wheel for too long. The 1520 is still the best Windows phone out there, and that's two years old. The app gap is getting worse, not better.
What I do expect is a Surface Phone, a phone/PC convertible. But that's not going to establish an ecosystem in mobile.
Archos LTE phones with Android Lollipop and Windows 10

Archos will be showcasing two new phones at IFA, expected to become available for 129 € in November. They share the same specs, but one is going to ship with Android Lollipop, the other one with Windows 10. They share the same (low) specs, with a quadcore Snapdragon 200, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB internal storage. It would not be surprised if the Windows device performs better than the Android version. Which by the way is already outdated when the phone ships.

The DTS ship has sailed

That's going to hurt a little. Not everyone, but a vocal minority.
I tried to get to the bottom of this DTS issue with Playbar. I spoke to quite a number of people and they are all telling me the same story. Turns out I already got it right. Two forces:
- The delivery mechanism is quickly moving from physical media (DVD/Blu-ray) to streaming services (Netflix, Prime etc.).
- None of the streaming services support DTS. There is no interest in licensing* it.
Sonos will also not be licensing it. As you know, much of the Sonos value proposition is streaming music. You can play from local content but data shows that users are replacing local content with streaming very quickly. They see the same happening in video. Even for those who use physical media, players are often connected to the TV which will decode the stream and not pass it through.
So if you are invested in physical media like Blu-rays, you live on a different planet that is quickly shrinking. You can stay put, but Sonos is not going to join you. You will have to look elsewhere. If you are interested in buying a high quality kit with Denon AV receiver and excellent speakers, I have somebody to refer to you. Somebody who recently simplified by throwing out dozens of cables, boxes, and power strips. WAF went through the roof.
Is that clear enough?

Ich habe immer wieder mal mit komplexen Enterprise-Systemen zu tun. Die teils widersprüchlichen Anforderungen erfordern einfach eine größere Anstrengung, als sich das Privatanwender vorstellen können. Man nehme etwa "kostengünstig", "sicher", "revisionsfähig", "skalierbar", "ausfallsicher". In der Regel lohnt es sich, lange zu bauen und zu verbessern, bevor man in die Fläche geht. Leider sehe ich oft auch halbgare, nicht fertiggestellte Lösungen. "Basst scho'". Auf die Dauer rächt sich das.
Aktuell sieht man das bei der Unterstützung mobiler Geräte. Jahrelang haben sich Betreiber von BlackBerry-Infrastrukturen ihre eigenen Anwender sauer gefahren, weil sie viel zu restriktive Policies einmal zertifiziert und niemals wieder aktualisiert haben. Es gibt heute sichere Policies, die nicht alles kaputt schlagen wie "USB-Port sperren", "SD-Karte abschalten".
- Wenn man heute alte Passwort-Policies ("acht Zeichen, Großschreibung, Sonderzeichen, Zahl", also Geheim-1) auf moderne Geräte anwendet, ohne Neuerungen wie Touch ID oder Picture Password zu berücksichtigen, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
- Wenn der Anwender fehlende Zertifikate für Intranet-Server wegklicken muss, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
- Wenn sich der Anwender an jedem Service neu anmelden muss, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
- Wenn der Anwender VPN-Verbindungen oder Wifi-Zugangspunkte verwalten (einrichten, verbinden) muss, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
- Wenn der Anwender weder Fotos vom Gerät herunterladen noch eBooks oder Musik installieren kann, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
- Wenn der Anwender keine Kalender abonnieren kann, dann ist das noch nicht fertig.
Das alles kann übrigens ein aktuelles BlackBerry-Gerät "einfach so". Eine sichere Verbindung ins Unternehmen, ohne eingehende Ports in der Firewall, sicherer Zugriff auf interne File Server, blitzschnelle Anmeldung, saubere Trennung von privaten Apps und Daten, integrale Sicht über alle Nachrichten (und Kalender).
Weiß halt nur niemand.

iPad stalling

I suspect Apple wasn't just caught off guard by the iPad's success, but was led to believe that the iPad represented the future of computing. Many thought the iPad would outshine the iPhone.
Very interesting analysis of the current state of the iPad/tablet market. What I see are two things:
- Bigger phones have changed my usage profile. More iPhone, less iPad.
- Enterprises are pushing back on iPad. You can't have three devices: notebook, tablet, phone.
In both cases, iPads are playing a less important role than I once thought. They either have to replace a notebook — this is where Surface gets it right — or they become a luxury.
In private households, iPads can often replace notebooks or even desktop computers. That is especially true where content creation was never the major reason to get a PC. It can replace a TV, a book reader, a web browser, a mail client, a typewriter. iPad's ease of use let people switch from full PCs to iPads without ever looking back. If that is your use case, make sure you back up to the cloud, and maybe, offload most storage to the cloud.
A few thoughts on Samsung Unpacked for the S6 Edge Plus and Note 5

I watched the Samsung Unpacked event and then spent a few hours thinking about what I just saw. Before I jump right in, let me say that I love the Galaxy S6 Edge. It's just a joy to use, has a great camera, the best I have seen so far in a mobile phone, and a gorgeous high-res display. It almost replaced my trusty iPhone 6+, if it were not for two problems: I had difficulties typing on it because the curved screen does not let me hold it with two hands while not touching the edge of the screen and letting the cursor jump around. And, less importantly, Withings Healthmate does not work well on Android. Now that I have an Apple Watch, I am even less inclined to switch my daily driver. But I do still use the Edge quite often as a second device. I have also tried the Note 4 and it clearly was not right for me. Did not like the materials, the build, I found the multitasking unintuitive. But that's just me. I know people who love their Galaxy Note to bits and pieces. It's just very, very powerful. And it's expandable with extra storage, extra batteries, replacement back covers, etc.
Now that I set the stage, a few thoughts:
- Samsung got the balance between S6 and S6 Edge wrong. They made too many S6 and not enough Edge models. Apparently more people than expected were ready to spend extra to get a more desirable design.
- The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is a plus-sized Galaxy S6 Edge. Some upgraded specs but the display is simply larger. So is the body. It's very hard to not see this as an Apple match race maneuver.
- Samsung is trying to cure Android lag with throwing more hardware at the problem. Now four gig of RAM instead of three. That's what a Microsoft Surface uses to run Windows 10 just nicely.
- The Galaxy Note 5 changes the winning formula of the current Note model in a big way. With the S6 (Edge, Edge Plus) Samsung became more Apple-like. Charge for more storage, do not provide storage expansion, build a much higher quality device, get the design right, try to keep the price up. With the Note 5 Samsung follows the same path.
- Samsung takes wireless charging very serious. That's the biggest gripe I have with iPhone. I was so used to wireless charging with Lumia that plugging in was a big step backwards.
- New watch teased for release at IFA in Berlin. Maybe they get it right this time. Samsung is on a "fail early, fail often" path here.
While the S6 Edge is a no-brainer, I see quite some risk with the Note 5. Personally I think that those customers don't want to give up on expandability. Samsung Germany may have the same concerns and they are only offering the S6 Edge Plus, but not the Note 5, at least for the moment.
No need to switch input languages

This is one of the little things that make typing on a BlackBerry so efficient. You can switch your input languages, but you don't have to. Your BlackBerry will detect the language you are typing in and make proper suggestions. And it does so by the sentence. Multiple languages in the same message and no need to adjust anything.
Not a problem if you only ever type in one language, but a real time saver for me.
Auf Legerwall

Segeln auf offenem Meer macht Landratten Angst, aber nicht dem Segler. Der fürchtet etwas anderes: das Land. Schiffe fühlen sich im Wasser wohl, aber nicht, wenn sie gegen Land stoßen. Ganz blöd ist eine Situation, die man Legerwall nennt.
Mit Legerwall wird die Situation eines Wasserfahrzeuges beschrieben, in der dieses durch Wind, Seegang oder Strömung an eine Küste getrieben wird. Die damit verbundene Gefahr besteht darin, an einer Küste zu stranden, wenn das Boot durch die eigene Motorkraft oder durch Segeln nicht mehr gegen die Naturkräfte ankommt.
Und genau das ist die Situation, in der man sich als stark Übergewichtiger findet. Man wird tief in einen Trichter gepustet, aus dem man kaum mehr rauskreuzen kann. Diäten schaden, Bewegung ist schmerzhaft.
Es gibt nach meiner Erfahrung nur zwei Wege, da wieder rauszukommen:
- Anders essen.
- Bewegen, auch wenn es schwer (!) fällt.
Nummer 1 habe ich ein paar mal probiert und es hat nie funktioniert. Andere haben damit großen Erfolg. Nummer 2 hat jetzt nachhaltig funktioniert. Und zwar ganz langsam. Wie beim Rauskreuzen aus einer Bucht kann man anfangs nur ganz kleine Schläge machen und man meint nicht voranzukommen. Aber dann geht es immer einfacher, jeder Folgeschlag wird länger und macht mehr Boden gut. Ideal ist, wenn man 1 und 2 kombiniert. Soviel Tugend habe ich nicht.
Es gibt übrigens keine Alternative. Wenn man sich treiben lässt, wird man Schiffbruch erleiden.
Android: Und noch eine schwere Sicherheitslücke

Concordski & Buran

Whether it's a Concordski or a Buran, you often find inventions that look familiar. So when Apple made the iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader on its home button, similar designs appeared in Android land. Since there is always a great rush to implement those designs, sometimes engineers have to cut corners. HTC seems to have forgotten to copy the design that Apple chose to protect user's fingerprints for its HTC One Max phablet and just stored the fingerprints in the file system, world readable by any process.

Beinahe jede Woche bekomme ich so eine Mail. Das tut gut, denn es zeigt, dass ich hier nicht umsonst schreibe. ;-)
Aktueller Stand: 286. Tag > 10k, 41. Woche > 100 km, ohne jede Ausnahme. Insgesamt: 5016 km.

Was ist das? Macht tick-tack und wenn's runterfällt, ist die Uhr kaputt?
Das ist der älteste Dad-Joke, an den ich mich erinnern kann. Gut erinnern kann ich mich aber an den größten Blödsinn, den ich heute gelesen habe: "Ich kaufe mir jetzt eine Analog-Uhr, damit ich von meinem iPhone loskomme." Und eine Schreibmaschine, und einen Plattenspieler, vielleicht? Fahrrad ohne Gangschaltung und ohne Bremsen?
Warum macht die Uhr tick-tack? Das ist die Unruh, die eine Hemmung antreibt. Die Unruh ist eine mit gleichmäßiger Frequenz schwingende Feder, deren Schwingungen man zählt, um die Zeit zu messen. Eine genau gehende Uhr zu bauen erfordert eine brutale Präzision, wie sie nur Schweizer Bergbauern in nutzlosen Wintertagen aufbrachten. Dann hat man entdeckt, dass Quarze sehr viel genauer schwingen, und die Präzision war nichts mehr wert.
Die mechanische Uhr wurde zum Protzomat ("kann sich eine dicke Uhr leisten" oder "kennt eine Stewardesse, die sich was nebenbei verdient") und an und für sich völlig unnütz, weil mittlerweile alles die Zeit anzeigt. Ergebnis: Die nächste Generation trägt keine Armbanduhr mehr. Die alten Säcke sehr wohl, am liebsten mit "Komplikationen", also Dingen, die extra Geld kosten dürfen. Man weiß ja nie, wann man mal eine Rundenzeit (aufregendes Leben) stoppen oder die Mondphase (Entschleunigung) kennen muss.
Ganz schlimm ist in dieser Welt natürlich eine Smartwatch. Taugt nicht als Protzomat, weil viel zu billig. Und kann dazu für kost-beinahe-gar-nix mit Komplikationen aufgeladen werden. Am aller-aller-schlimmsten ist natürlich die Apple Watch. Prüfen wir mal ein paar Vorurteile:
- "Die ist nicht mal wasserdicht." Ist sie doch. Ich wasche sie regelmäßig unter fließendem Wasser.
- "Aber man kann damit nicht duschen." Kann man wohl. Sollte man aber nicht, weil die Stelle unter der Uhr auch sauber gemacht werden muss.
- "Die Batterie ist viel zu schwach." Ja, das hat man auch vom iPhone gesagt. Beide müssen jeden Tag an den Strom. Beide halten bei mir einen Tag. Auch wenn er mal 30 Stunden lang ist.
- "Ist nur was für Angeber." Siehe oben, unter Protzomat.
- "Ich will nicht noch mehr abgelenkt werden." Sehr gutes Argument. Für die Apple Watch. Ist jetzt etwas schwierig zu verstehen, aber in der Praxis tatsächlich so.
- "Wenn sie runterfällt, ist sie kaputt." Siehe ganz oben, unter Dad-Joke.
Dass wir uns recht verstehen. Ich bin Ingenieur. Ich liebe es, durch den Glasboden in einen Protzomat zu schauen. Diese Präzision, diese Mechanik. Und dieser sensationell niedrige Energieverbrauch. Hach.
Aber wer von seinem iPhone loskommen will, der schaltet es bitte einfach aus. Ohne iPhone aus dem Haus zu gehen wäre sicherlich zu gewagt.
Customizing Windows 10

The first thing I disabled in Windows 10 was Cortana. Three reasons:
- I work bilingual. Cortana does not.
- Cortana uses Bing. I don't.
- Cortana tries to distract me with Bing news.
Next stop: privacy settings. Lots of privacy settings. Too many privacy settings. Feels like Facebook.
There are more things I want to remove. Things that Microsoft will keep pushing even after I removed them. Here is a list of PowerShell commands to run as administrator:

The first three remove "Get Office", "Get Skype" and the Solitaire Collection. The Bing entries remove all MSN apps besides Weather and the final one removes the Xbox app, which you can't even remove manually. The internal names for the MSN apps are stil Bing, a brand Microsoft is de-emphasizing. The music and video apps are still called Zune. ;-)
All of these app will continue to come back with each Windows update. So you want to run the commands as a PowerShell script.
Microsoft is a spammer now

Microsoft is developing some tactics that I find shady. It began with a software update to Windows 8 where it started to advertize an upgrade to Windows 10, right in between necessary security fixes. Once I installed Windows 10, it started to install apps that I never asked for, put ads for others apps in my Start Menu. Solitaire now has in-app purchases. I really don't need Candy Crush.
I have uninstalled Get Office, Get Skype, Solitaire Collections and all of the MSN apps a number of times. Microsoft shoves them back on to my computers and does not respect my decision. I am no longer confident that Microsoft will respect other decisions I made.
Now I am receiving push messages advertising Office 365. Classy, Microsoft. Really classy.

Eine Woche mit Eve

Eine Woche habe ich Eve Weather jetzt am Laufen und bin sehr zufrieden damit. Ich musste allerdings ein bisschen mit dem Standort experimentieren. Die Nordseite des Hauses war nicht perfekt, weil viel zu viel Stahlbeton zwischen Eve und dem iPhone war. Kein Empfang, außer direkt neben dem Fenster. Außerdem schien abends noch mal kurz die Sonne drauf und das erzeugte ein paar falsche Messpunkte. Temperatur um zwei Grad rauf, ebenso der Luftdruck um ein paar hPa. Jetzt hängt sie an gut gelüfteter Stelle im Schatten vor dem Haus, mit besserem Empfang, weil dorthin sehr große Fenster "schauen".
Interessant ist so eine Station eigentlich nur, wenn man sehen will, wie das Wetter war. Die Smartphone-Apps liefern zumindestens für Darmstadt stets perfekte aktuelle Wetterwerte. In dem Sinne wäre sicher noch ein Regensensor sinnvoll, der den Niederschlag mitzählt. Schauen wir mal auf die analogen Instrumente im Haus und die Angaben des Hessischen Landesamt für Umwelt und Geologie:
Ein paar Beobachtungen:
- Die Luftdruckangabe von Eve stimmt nicht. Wer schon mal ein ordentliches Barometer gekauft hat, weiß warum. Eve zeigt den tatsächlichen Luftdruck an. Den verwendet man aber nicht, sondern den auf Meereshöhe korrigierten. Je höher das Instrument hängt, desto niedriger ist der tatsächliche Druck; das kennt man vom Fliegen. Oder aus hohen Hochhäusern. Um Luftdruckwerte vergleichbar zu machen, rechnet man so, als ob alle Instrumente auf einer Höhe hängen. Eve müsste bei mir etwa 20 hPa dazuzählen, ein ziemlich beträchtlicher Fehler, wie man auf dem Luft-Instrument sieht. Das kann man mit einem Softwareupdate beheben.
- Die relative Luftfeuchtigkeit ist korrekt. Innen wird zwar eine höhere Feuchtigkeit angezeigt als draußen. Aber das liegt daran, dass kühlere Luft weniger Wasser lösen kann als wärmere. Über den Tag gesehen hängt die Luftfeuchtigkeit immer etwas hinter der Temperatur her und die Kurve ist reziprok.
- Auch wenn wir draußen bald auf fiebrige Temperaturen zusteuern, ist es drinnen gleichmäßig kühl. Wärmedämmung, kontrollierte Wohnraumlüftung und Wärmepumpe lohnen sich nicht nur im Winter. Wer für seinen Neubau was plant, kann mir gerne mal schreiben.
- Morgens um sechs ist derzeit die beste Zeit zu laufen.
Siri habe ich nicht probiert. Theoretisch kann man fragen, wie warm es gerade draußen ist. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass das funktioniert.

Heute wird's warm, 38 Grad sind vorausgesagt. Also bin ich heute morgen schon um 6:15 auf die Piste. Man glaubt gar nicht, wie viele Leute bei diesem Wetter morgens ihre Brötchen im Schlafi holen. ;-) Exercise doppelt erfüllt, Move zu zwei Dritteln. Das wird jetzt ein lascher Tag im Schatten.
So sieht das übrigens morgens um 6:30 auf meinem Weg aus. Morgen ist der 285. Tag, die 41. Woche und die 5000 km Ziellinie winkt. Noch 15 km ...
Official Android Blog: An Update to Nexus Devices

From this week on, Nexus devices will receive regular OTA updates each month focused on security, in addition to the usual platform updates. The first security update of this kind began rolling out today, Wednesday August 5th, to Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10, and Nexus Player. This security update contains fixes for issues in bulletins provided to partners through July 2015, including fixes for the libStageFright issues.
Galaxy Nexus does not make the cut. Samsung is going to follow up, but they still need permission from the operators.
Are you afraid? Well, you should be.

Stagefright, the yet to be published Android weakness, will let baddies infect your device. It's already happening. And you have zero defense, if you rely on your vendor. Google has fixed the Nexus 6 and so has CyanogenMod. But none of the OEM has. Samsung, LG, Lenovo, Huawei, Asus, HTC, Sony, Motorola, Oppo, ZTE ... And BlackBerry?
This points to a much bigger problem. The Android market works by cranking out thousands of devices per year, most of them quickly abandoned. There is no way, no way, you could fix them all. Disaster will strike, if not this time, then later.
Feeling safe on your Windows Phone? Maybe you can, because nobody writes for Windows Phone when there is a bigger target. But if there is an exploit, how long do you think Microsoft needs to roll out an update?

Microsoft OneDrive :: Ein kleines Adventure

Microsoft OneDrive ist so ein kleines Adventure-Spiel. Mit jeder neuen Version und jeder neuen Plattform gibt es wieder wundersame Veränderungen. Windows 10 zum Beispiel: früher (also bei Frankenstein 8.1) konnte man bestimmen, welche Folder denn nun synchronisiert werden und welche anderen Folder denn bitteschön nur in der Wolke bleiben sollen. Darauf zugreifen konnte man stets auf dem gleichen Wege, nur die Wolken-Ordner waren nur Online verfügbar. Jetzt bei Windows 10 kann man ebenfalls die Folder auswählen, die OneDrive synchronisieren kann. Die anderen sind dann weg. Also nicht weg, aber nur noch im Browser zu sehen, auf OneDrive.com. Dumm das.
Dann wäre dann noch die Unterstützung für SD-Karten. Viele Windows-Tablets kommen mit atemberaubend wenig Speicher. Da legt man die OneDrive Synchronisation natürlich auf eine Speichererweiterung. Geht mit Frankenstein 8.1 nur auf NTFS-formatierten Speicher. Also leerräumen, formatieren, Daten wieder drauf. Bei Windows 10 wird das noch mal spannender. Da sagt OneDrive, nein, hier kann ich den Folder nicht anlegen. Auch wenn er schon da ist. Und gut gefüllt da ist. Pech gehabt, lieber User. Es sei denn, der User ist so ein kleiner Admin, der weiß, was virtuelle Laufwerke sind. Also SD-Karte erneut freimachen, eine Datei mit einem virtuellen Laufwerk auf dem Filesystem anlegen und dieses dann mit dem Rechner verbinden. Jetzt ist OneDrive zufrieden. Ist ja ein Laufwerk nun, da kann man den OneDrive-Ordner reinlegen. Als nächste Einschränkung stelle ich mir vor, dass virtuelle Laufwerke nicht verbunden werden können, wenn sie auf Speicherkarten liegen. Wäre doch gelacht, wenn man dem User kein Bein stellen könnte.
Dieser Tage gibt es dann auch noch die Möglichkeit, von anderen geteilte Ordner mit in den eigenen OneDrive zu legen. Jeder Dropbox-Nutzer kennt das schon immer. Geht jetzt auch mit OneDrive, allerdings nur, wenn man auch Edit-Rechte hat in diesem Folder. Read only ist nicht. Naja, vielleicht 2016.
Die beste OneDrive-Version war übrigens anno dunnemals in RT. Da wurden für alle Dateien sogenannte Stubs angelegt. Die Dateien waren da, aber nicht do, wie man in Hessen sagt. Erst wenn man sie brauchte, wurden sie schwuppdiwupps geholt. Völlig transparent. Damals habe ich mir OneDrive angelacht. Seit dem ging's bergab.
What happened to BlackBerry 10.3.2?

Two month ago I got a heads up about an upcoming BlackBerry 10 Update to version 10.3.2. Then nothing happened. I asked and got an evasive answer. Something about an "implementation issue".
Now it turns out that BlackBerry wanted to launch a new activation lock. If somebody steals your BlackBerry, they can't just wipe it and reinstall for themselves. And with this update BlackBerry shot itself in the foot. Back to development.
UE Roll :: First Impressions

I have been reading lots of reviews of the UE Roll, the little Bluetooth speaker that sounds so amazing. When I had to return my UE Boom last week, the agency offered to send a Roll in return.
It's really small and nimble, especially when compared to the Megaboom. But does it sound amazing? No, of course, it doesn't. It may sound nice when compared to cheap Bluetooth speakers, Apple earbuds or smartphone speakers. But it pales when compared to the Megaboom, and I suspect also when compared to the Boom.
What it does bring to the table is a clever and fresh design. It rests on the strap when placed on the table and you can hang it from this strap as shown in the first photo. You can also wrap the strap around other flat objects like a seat belt and fasten it to the other side.
Roll comes with the same great software features as the other UE speakers. Upgrade wirelessly, group speakers together, switch on and off over Bluetooth Smart. Pick whichever you like. But don't expect to get the same sound out of all of them.
Installing Windows 10 on vintage netbook

Why do I install Windows 10 on a netbook? Because I can. ;-)
This was a fun little project. I have a vintage Samsung NC10. Two things are unusual about it: it runs Windows 7 instead of the initial Windows XP Starter Edition it shipped with and it has two GB of RAM instead of just one. When I had difficulties installing Windows 10 on the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, I downloaded the full ISO image with 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 10 Home and burned it on a thumbdrive. Today I used this thumbdrive to install Windows 10 on the netbook. 25 minutes to first reboot, 50 minutes to second reboot and a total of 90 minutes until I could login to Windows 10 for the first time. Then it installed updates to some of the apps, and it is now syncing my OneDrive folder to the second partition of its harddrive.
It is stable and fast, Rafael asked on Twitter. I had removed all of the Samsung bloatware, all of the .Net framework and C++ redistributable. Then I installed NextGen reader, Twitter and Word Mobile. It is certainly much faster than it was before. Whether it is stable I don't know yet. But this little machine was already relegated to a paperweight and now it's a usable little computer with tens of GB of free storage.
I have used touchscreen Windows computers for so long that I keep touching the NC10 screen. ;-)
Surface 3 with Windows 10

I love Surface 3. No fan, feels like a proper tablet, can be propped up with its kickstand in three different positions. Can act as a full PC with its keyboard attached. Has MicroUSB power, a proper USB-port for attaching peripherals and DisplayPort for those odd presentations. It was all very good, but it was missing the proper software.
Windows 10 changes that. You can run it as a PC with a Start menu if you like. I prefer the tablet mode that I already loved on the original Surface RT. That had this odd desktop which only ran Microsoft Office, and was not very good at it. Now I have Word Mobile, touch friendly and with all the features I would ever need. Plus, it syncs nicely into OneDrive, and I can pick up my work from iPhone, from the Mac, basically from everywhere. This feels just right.
And this thing has proper multitasking. I can run a couple of programs in the background without every worrying if they are still working. Uploading a gigabyte of video to sftp? Piece of cake. And while it uploads I can work in Word. Mind you, I am not using desktop windows. Everything is full screen, in tablet mode. And swiping from the left gives me an overview of all apps that running. Not suspended in the background. Running.
Elgato Eve Weather :: Erste Erfahrung mit HomeKit

Seit zwei Tagen habe ich das erste HomeKit-Gerät im Einsatz: Eve Weather, eine Wetterstation von Elgato. Elgato hat unter der Marke Eve vier HomeKit-Geräte im Angebot und entwickelt weitere. Neben der Wetterstation gibt es Eve Energy, das als Schaltsteckdose auch den Stromverbrauch misst. Eve Room ist eine Wetterstation für drinnen und misst VOC (Volative Organic Compounds, flüchtige organische Verbindungen). Eve Door&Window ist ein Fühler, der lediglich misst, ob ein Fenster- oder Türrahmen geöffnet ist. Für mich war zunächst nur Eve Weather interessant, weil ich die anderen Funktionen bereits über Fritz, WeMo und Withings abdecke.
Eve nutzt Apples Heimvernetzung HomeKit und damit Bluetooth Smart, auch bekannt als Bluetooth Low Energy. WeMo und Withings bauen auf WLAN, AVM nutzt für die Heimvernetzung DECT. WLAN braucht viel Energie, ist aber in unserem Haus gut ausgeleuchtet mit insgesamt vier Basisstationen. DECT geht mittels Repeatern ebenfalls durch das ganze Haus. Bluetooth fällt wegen der fehlenden Infrastruktur auf die Nase, dazu später mehr.
Bluetooth Smart ist die clevere Bluetooth-Implementierung. Pairing ist einfacher, die Übertragung ist sehr sparsam und wird deshalb von Fitnesstrackern und anderen Sensoren verwendet. Pebble hat sowohl das klassische Bluetooth als auch Bluetooth Smart und wird in Zukunft wohl komplett auf Bluetooth Smart wechseln.
Alle HomeKit-Geräte haben eine eindeutige ID, die auf dem Gerät (und in Kopie im Quickstart Guide) zu finden ist. Man kann ein HomeKit-Gerät mit genau einem iPhone koppeln. Vergisst man, die Koppelung aufzuheben, lässt es sich nur nach einem Reset neu verbinden. HomeKit nutzt iCloud und dessen Keychain, um die Berechtigungen auch auf andere Geräte des Nutzers zu übertragen. Das hat bei mir bisher nicht funktioniert. Eigentlich sollte Eve auf allen verbundenen iOS-Geräten funktionieren, bei mir fragt es aber jedesmal geduldig, mit welchen Geräten ich mich gerne verbinden möchte, was ja (s.o.) nicht funktionieren kann.
HomeKit kennt Gebäude, Bereiche und Räume — also etwa Zuhause, Erdgeschoss, Wohnzimmer — mit denen man Geräte verorten kann, um diese dann gemeinsam anzusteuern. Das geht dann auch über Siri: "schalte das Licht im Schlafzimmer aus". Dazu kennt HomeKit Szenen, so daß man in Zukunft ganze Ketten von Aktionen auslösen kann, etwa "Aufstehen", "Zu Bett gehen", "Das Haus verlassen" oder "Nach Hause kommen". Mit iOS 9 kommen dann auch die Möglichkeit, andere iCloud-IDs auf die Geräte lesend zugreifen zu lassen. Was mir eindeutig fehlt: wie kann ich mehrere Personen im Haushalt mit verschiedenen iCloud-IDs HomeKit-Geräte steuern lassen?
Das einzige HomeKit-Gateway, das es bisher gibt, ist ein AppleTV der dritten Generation. Das hat sowohl Bluetooth Smart als auch eine Netzverbindung zu iCloud. Hier wird HomeKit in Zukunft noch ausbauen.
Eve Weather funktioniert soweit sehr gut. Es zeichnet Temperatur, Luftfeuchtigkeit und Luftdruck kontinuierlich auf. Die Eve App auf dem iPhone soll diese Daten alle 5 Minuten aktualisieren, auch im Hintergrund. Ist man länger außer Reichweite, dann ruft sie diese Daten bei der nächsten Gelegenheit ab.
Ich habe allerdings ein Reichweitenproblem. Eve Weather hängt direkt neben dem Außensensor der Heizung an der Nordseite des Hauses. Und ist damit beinahe überall außer Reichweite. Zwei Alternativen: entweder gehe ich ab und zu mal hin, um die Werte auszulesen, oder ich hänge Eve Weather an einen besser erreichbaren Ort, wo es falsche (zu hohe) Temperaturen aufzeichnet. Die beiden Screenshots zeigen das. Bevor ich zur Station ging, hatte Eve zwei Stunden lang keine aktuellen Werte.
Ludtdrucksensoren muss man eigentlich auch auf die Höhe kalibireren. So beträgt der Luftdruck in Darmstadt zur Zeit der Ablesung nicht 1000 mbar bzw. hPa sondern 1020. Ich muss also im Kopf stets 20 dazuzählen, wenn mich der absolute Wert interessiert.
