Ausgebeamt

by Volker Weber

Belkin WeMo

by Volker Weber

by Volker Weber

We just started to roll out our next update for Symbian called Nokia Belle Refresh for Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7 and Nokia Oro with version number 111.040.1511 (Nokia E6, version number 111.140.0058, will follow still this week, Nokia 500 updates will start to be launched within the next few weeks).

This update again brings new features to Symbian smartphones, for example:

  • Nokia N8 will have some extra apps for imaging

These phones get the Belle Refresh instead of Belle Feature Pack 1, nee Carla. Feauture Pack 2, nee Donna, is already on the horizon for newer Symbian devices.

Almost Smart TV

by Volker Weber

ZZ2AC8FEE5

Last week we bought a new TV, and it's incredibly capable compared to the Sony Bravia we had before. Most of the innovation is around the Smart Hub pictured above. But, boy, does that need a designer. In the upper left corner is a thumbnail view of the currently running program. In the upper right is a advert that does not do a thing. You can go in there, but you only get a larger version of that picture. Underneath the Search field there are five icons that Samsung "recommends". You can't change them. Don't like "Bild.de"? Tough luck.

The row of big icons leads you to six areas of other recommended content. First is "Samsung Apps", the app store. Next is "Your Videos", a video store. Then there are four more, one offscreen to the right, none of which I want to use. Everything I mentioned so far is fixed.

Below that, you finally get to the area you can customize. You can move apps around, add new ones, delete most of the original ones. Not all of them, but some. What you do here is the same thing you do with a new PC. Uninstall all the crapware, move the rest you cannot uninstall to a new folder "Junk".

In essence: this huge screen has space for nine icons you want.

IBM is almost done

by Volker Weber

In January 2013, we're joining two 'places' - long-standing Lotusphere and last year's Connect conferences - and making them one.

Dog and tail are switching places. Lotusphere is the 19 year champion of IBM conferences, Connect was tacked on for "Social Business". Everybody could see this coming, no big deal. Now there is only one task left: find a new name for Lotus Notes.

I see "I am at Lotusphere" t-shirts in my future.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Review

by Volker Weber

There are reviews that appeal mostly to people who have no intention to ever buy the product. Like John Gruber of Daring Fireball who was quick to link to this relatively weak opinion piece:

I'm sad to report that Samsung failed at execution on all fronts. Samsung has been pushing the skinning envelope further and further, and, with this revision of TouchWiz, they've slammed into a brick wall. Couple this failure with astonishingly bad hardware and a $500 price tag, and you've got yourself a real disappointment. Samsung promised us the moon, and then cut corners everywhere possible, and it's hard to walk away not feeling a little insulted.

It's a very negative review of the new Samsung tablet. But it suffers from the reviewer knowing only iPad and Android. Let me give you some examples:

I really love the speakers. Loud, stereo, front-facing speakers. It's such a common sense thing, I really don't understand what's taken so long. Tablets are supposed to be media consumption devices, which means, after the screen, the speakers are the most important component. This is the first tablet I've played with where headphones or "cupping" wasn't mandatory.Speakers that face your ears need to be a standard feature on all phone and tablets. I feel stupid typing that, yet this is the first device I've seen with them.

This person has obviously never seen, let alone used a BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Note 10.1 is wrapped in the trashiest, most awful, cheapest-feeling plastic I've ever experienced. Sure, the finish is Samsung's usual glossy-plastic junk, but this plastic isn't even rigid. It's squishy.

That would be a HP TouchPad case.

The reason this is so slow is because the two apps aren't actually running in the foreground together. Samsung doesn't have the technical ability to actually make this work, so they used a bunch of tricks to make it seem like two apps are running at once, when really one app is "on" at any given moment.

Surprise, surprise. Android doesn't multitask apps. If you want that, you need a BlackBerry PlayBook. Which can do stupid things like play two videos side by side.

Normalize Instacrap

Normalize is my new favorite app. It lets you undo some of the damage from Instacrap filters. Some of the information from the original photo is lost forever, so it's not completely reversible. But it's a lot better than nothing.

20 percent on $1M

by Volker Weber

On August 13, 2012, GBS Enterprises Incorporated, a Nevada corporation (the "Company"), entered into a Note Purchase and Security Agreement with John A. Moore, a member of the Board of Directors of the Company, and his wife (collectively, the "Lender") pursuant to which the Company sold a secured promissory note (the "Note") to the Lender in the aggregate principal amount of $1,000,000 bearing interest at a rate of 20% per year and maturing on the first anniversary date of the date of issuance with a 2% prepayment penalty. To secure the obligations of the Company under the Note, the Company granted the Lender a first priority security interest in the accounts receivable (the "Collateral") of the Company and its subsidiaries located in the United States of America on a one-for-one (1:1) basis.

Schade 1&1

by Volker Weber

AT&T mit seinen Kunden anstellt.

Send Growl notifications to Mountain Lion Notification Center

Hiss is an OSX app that forwards notifications from Growl enabled apps to Notification Center in Mountain Lion.

So you've installed Mountain Lion with the all new Notification Center. Good for you! But what's this? All those old Growl notifications mixed with the shiny and new. Doesn't seem right, eh?

Enter Mountain Growl: Other solutions like Hiss are okay, but a actually a weird hack with a lot of down sides. So while waiting for Growl 2 (which hopefully will support the Notification Center) why not use the current Growl with a plugin that does the necessary. All as a 1st class citizen in Growl.

iPad and Nexus 7

by Volker Weber

I love the iPad. And I love the Nexus 7. But when I read articles comparing them, I sometimes have to cringe. It's a bit like comparing a VW Golf with a Dacia Logan. The Dacia is smaller and a lot less expensive than the VW. They both carry people and luggage, have four wheels, one in each corner. You can make an argument, where the smaller car is a better fit than the larger one. But you would be stretching the truth if you would say that the Logan is the better car.

I will give you two examples: build quality and reading experience. Since I have had the Nexus 7, I have removed the back cover twice and tightened the screws around the display. Why did I have to do that? Because they come apart.

It's an easy fix, but it's also an annoying issue. Now let's take a look at legibility. On your left is the iPad, on your right is the Nexus 7.

Looks pretty similar when scaled down. Now let's look at the same thing at actual size.

While I can read the paper on the iPad at full size, I need to zoom and pan on the Nexus. Possible, but very inconvenient. They are both tablets, they are both nice. But they are worlds apart.

Nokia Transit und andere Lektionen

by Volker Weber

The India Times will never get it

by Volker Weber

Look at their URL: blackberry-enterprise-encryption-keys-corporate-emails. And their headline:

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion agrees to hand over its encryption keys to India

The India Times will never get it. There are three BlackBerry services:

1. BlackBerry Enterprise Service
2. BlackBerry Internet Service
3. BlackBerry Messenger Service

RIM cannot hand over encryption keys for #1. They don't have them. #2 is insecure by design. Messages arrive in your inbox unencrypted over public networks. Why bother?

It's all about #3. All messages are encrypted with the same key. It's well known. An enterprise admin can change the key, but nobody does. They just disable the service on their handsets.

It's all about consumers. You can monitor SMS messages at the service center. Not as easy for BB messenger, but possible. And that's what they do. Nothing else.

What happens next? Everybody will parrot the India Times story, because that's what they want to believe. RIM issues a statement. Lots of PowerPoint files will be written and presented at company meetings.

Was ist neu? Einfach mal probieren.
