You can now add guests to Microsoft Teams

We’re starting to roll out the ability to add anyone as a guest in Microsoft Teams. This means that anyone with a business or consumer email account, such as Outlook.com, Gmail.com or others, can participate as a guest in Teams with full access to team chats, meetings and files. Previously, anyone with an Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) account could be added as a guest, and now anyone with an email address can be added to a team. All guests in Teams are covered by the same compliance and auditing protection as the rest of Office 365, and can be managed securely within Azure AD.
Will Vero be your next social network?

The closest I ever got to the perfect social network was Path, eight years ago, when they would only allow you to have 50 friends. It allowed you to quickly share photos with your best friends without worrying too much about going public with everything. At the time, Facebook was already acting weird. But then Path needed to make their investors happy with growth and it all went downhill from there.
Google+ was the next one, but it's circles were too difficult to understand, and somehow Google ended up being the bad guy and Facebook the good one. Weird. I have friends who still use Google+, but it never resonated with many of them. Then came Ello, and it launched before it was mobile. That was a missed opportunity. Like Google+ it still exists, but it did not pull people away from Facebook.
Vero might be the next dead social network, and they just don't know it yet. It has two interesting properties:
- You can follow people like you do on Twitter. You don't actually have to know them. Just follow them because they are interesting.
- You can also connect with other people like you do on Facebook. You will put those connections into one of three buckets: Acquaintences, Friends and Close Friends.
When you post something to your timeline, you can share it with only your close friends, your friends, your acquaintences or your followers. It's like Googe+ circles, just a lot easier. People you connected to don't know in which bucket they are. I set myself simple rules: acquaintences are people I actually know and met, friends have been at my house, close friends have stayed here.
Currently Vero is completely overwhelmed by its sudden popularity. Give it a few days until the situation improves.

Dirk machte mich letztens auf einen Wandschalter aufmerksam, der mit Apple Homekit arbeitet und einen gewöhnlichen Schalter ersetzen kann. Er verbindet sich mit dem 2.4 GHz-WLAN und ist mit Apple Homekit nutzbar. Würde er jetzt noch in mein Gira-System passen, dann hätte ich mehrere Anwendungen dafür.

Morbus Bixby

What is the most important upgrade of the Galaxy S9 over the S8? The fingerprint reader is below the camera. What is the most important upgrade according to Samsung? The camera.
If the camera would be the most important upgrade then why doesn't Samsung allow the user to map that extra button under the volume rocker to the camera? And why isn't it calling this the shutter release in the first place? The answer is simple. For Samsung the most important thing is Bixby.
The customer could not care less for Bixby. There are plenty of alternatives, on Android Google Assistant is the obvious choice. But Samsung wants to break free from Google. They don't want to be part of a larger Android eco system. Samsung wants to own it all. That is why you get all these extra Samsung apps that duplicate Android apps. And Bixby aspires to duplicate Google assistant. That is why Samsung is so desperate with this button.
Samsung is terrible with software. And you cannot duplicate Alexa, Assistant, or Siri for that matter, like you can duplicate a calendar, a notes app, an email client, or an address book. It's even harder than a completely new browser. So Samsung bought the company that initially developed Siri and then they ran into the ground last year. Bixby would only understand English and Korean, and just barely so. And with English I mean American. A year later it still does not understand German. As Google Assistant is going multi-language - and that means you can talk English, German or French without switching configurations - Bixby is way way way behind.
Late last year Rhee In-jong, the development manager behind Bixby, KNOX and Samsung Pay, left the company for Google and was replaced by Roh Tae-moon, a hardware executive. Rhee is one of these people who never give up. Only this time, he did.

This has been a tight race with a surprising result. With some rounding errors, two out of five people want Alexa. another two want Siri, and the remaining one wants Googe Assistant. I would have expected Alexa and Google, with Siri as a distant third.
As for Bixby, that was no surprise.
BTW: each time I do one of these polls, I get schooled on that I am doing it all wrong, that it is missing your particular choice. I apologize for causing you concern.
Group Sonos speakers by pressing a button

If you want to join the music that is playing in a different room, just walk up to a Sonos player and press the Play/Pause button for two seconds. Press it again for two seconds to leave the group.
As Hendrik mentions in his comment, you can also carry your music over to a different room: short press the Play/Pause button as you leave the room and then long press the Play/Pause button in the other room.
Nokia Mobile macht alles richtig

Von weniger als 100 Euro bis zu den Top-Smartphones liefert Nokia Mobile ein unverbasteltes Android One, dazu verbesserte Kameras in wertigen Gehäusen. Letztes Jahr haben sie 70 Millionen Telefone verkauft. Es würde mich nicht wundern, wenn sie dieses Jahr noch einmal enorm zulegen.

One Thousand Move Goals

On my 1002nd day of wearing the Apple Watch I completed my 1000 move goals. I missed it only on two days: on June 20th in 2016 I missed it by 3 calories since I did not pay attention, and then again last October when I woke up in the ICU. This may sound like a big achievement but it is kind of inevitable. Once you establish your daily routine, you just keep going. A day, a full week, a complete month. Three months later your reach 100. Complete the year to get to 365, and 500 is less than five months ahead. After that is is quite a stretch. How do you eat an elephant? In small bites. Eventually it will be gone.
BackBerry Motion :: Mein anderes Telefon

Hätte ich kein iPhone (und keine Apple Watch), dann würde ich ein Android-Telefon benutzen. Die Frage ist, welches. Da gibt es eine ganze Reihe von Kandidaten, die mir gefallen.
Ich mag die neuen Moto Z2, ich mag die Hardware der Huawei P10 und Mate 10 Pro (aber nicht die Software) und ich würde wahrscheinlich die Google Pixel 2 mögen. Das Mate 10 Pro benutze ich gerne, seit ich es in einer Hülle habe. Ohne ist es mir zu glatt. Das P10 habe ich zurück gegeben. Es ist im besten Sinne langweilig. Samsung kommt bei mir nicht in Frage, obwohl die einfach eine tolle Hardware produzieren. Ähnlich wie bei Huawei mag ich das "andere" Android nicht und bei Samsung stört mich die Zwangsbeglückung mit Bixby. Man kann sich ein bisschen wehren, aber ich mag nicht immer flußaufwärts schwimmen. Nokia fände ich sehr spannend, habe aber keinerlei Erfahrung damit. Bleiben Google und Moto.
Es gibt aber eine Überraschung, mit der ich nicht gerechnet habe. BlackBerry Mobile hat sich soweit etabliert, dass sie mit KEYone und Motion ernst zu nehmen sind, KEYone ist zwar durchaus ordentlich, aber Motion ist in vieler Hinsicht für mich viel ansprechender. Ich mag das Design sehr, ich mag den großen Screen mehr als ein Hardware-Keyboard (ich bin nicht schneller mit den Knöpfchen als mit dem mehrsprachigen BlackBerry-Softkeyboard). Kratzfestes Display, sehr reduzierte Gestaltung, IP67-Rating gegen Wasser und Staub, Kopfhöreranschluss (!), 4000 mAh-Akku gepaart mit einem stromsparenden Prozessor, USB C mit Quickcharge. Die Kamera ist durchschnittlich, es gibt kein Wireless Charging, aber es gibt die Hub+ Services und eine ganze Reihe unaufdringlicher Android-Erweiterungen. Updates kommen monatlich und ausweislich des Android Enterprise Recommended Status für drei Jahre.
Abseits der ganzen rationalen Abwägungen habe ich das Gerät einfach gerne in der Hand. Es ist flach, eckig mit Kanten und hat eine griffige Rückseite. Und es läuft länger mit seinem Akku als jedes andere Gerät hier. Im Standby wochenlang und bei voller Nutzung mindestens zwei Tage. Ich käme gar nicht auf die Idee, es in eine Hülle zu verbannen, so sicher habe ich es in der Hand. Ich empfinde die BlackBerrys als relativ teuer, auch wenn sie viel günstiger sind als die Topgeräte von Huawei oder Samsung. Immerhin kann man den Preis des Motion jetzt auf unter 400 € drücken. In other words: you are a sucker if you keep using Facebook. Uninstall its apps from your phone and enjoy your life. It may look hard to go cold turkey, but it's easier than you think. You will not wish your spent more time on Facebook.

Das ist eine sehr coole Idee. Ein kleines Stück Plastik, in das hinten das Netzteil gesteckt wird und vorne der Echo Dot. Ein kurzes Kabel verbindet beide. Das Ganze dann ab in die Steckdose. Besonders praktisch ist das in der Küche, weil dann kein Kabel auf der Theke liegt.
Vorsicht, das geht nur mit dem Echo Dot der zweiten Generation und dem alten komplett schwarzen Netzteil. Seit November gibt es ein neues und dafür muss die Halterung erst noch angepasst werden. Sie soll Ende des Monats verfügbar sein.

Your favorite messenger

I posted a couple of polls on Twitter:
Thank you for participating in these polls. Before we dive deeper, a few remarks. WhatsApp is very dominant in some European countries, but not in the US. Apple has a successful platform with iMessage (and Facetime), while Google is struggling to replicate this success.
This is reflected in the results. While Facebook has the lead with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, there is a stronger foothold for Apple on iPhone, then there is for Google on Android. I summed up Signal/Telegram/Threema for a simple reason: regardless of which of those messengers is your favorite, you are not trusting your social graph with Apple, Facebook or Google.
End-to-end-encryption is available on all of those messengers. It does not matter which messenger you chose, the content of your messages should stay private, unlike plain email or SMS texts for that matter. The interesting data is meta. The people you are communicating with is your real social graph, not your Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ (ahem) "friends", not even your phonebook which some people guard as if it weren't a bloated collection of old entries.
Facebook is most successful in exploiting this graph, Google only owns it through Gmail. Their messaging efforts are plenty and unsuccessful. Both are advertising companies and if you think you are avoiding Facebook by using WhatsApp instead of Facebook Messenger, well, think again.
Apple is different from Facebook and Google. They only care about providing a perfectly integrated platform. If they were after your social graph, they would provide clients for other operating systems.
The longer platform play is of course to expand from messaging to full on commerce. China provides a look into that future. WeChat is life. Once a messaging platform is dominant, you can no longer escape it, unless you want to be disconnected. Does that future look Orwellian? You bet it does.
Personally, I can reach most contacts on iMessage, since almost all of my friends have iPhones, iPads or Macs. Some use WhatsApp for convenience; there is no Windows app for iMessage and they would like to use their keyboards. Some have Android devices, where iMessage is not an option. And for the "resistance" I have Signal. I cannot be bothered with Telegram or Threema.
Since I asked on Twitter, the results are skewed. Asking the same question of Facebook would make an even stronger point for the Facebook platform. And the "resistance" looks much stronger than it actually is.

Wenig spannend

In zwei Wochen ist die Handy-Weltmeisterschaft MWC in Barcelona. Und ich bin irgendwie jetzt schon gelangweilt. Wir kommen bei den Smartphones langsam in die selbe Situation wie bei den Fernsehern. Nur mit unfassbarem Aufwand kann man aus der Hardware noch ein bisschen was rauskitzeln. Und um seine Flagschiffe zu diferenzieren, bauen die Hersteller immer Lösungen mehr für Probleme, die niemand hat. Hat irgendjemand Bixby gebraucht? Oder von mir aus Allo/Duo?
Alle Handys in diesem Bild machen ihre Arbeit gut. Was wir gebrauchen können, ist mehr Robustheit, bessere Laufzeiten und erschwingliche Preise. Interessanterweise macht Nokia gerade alles richtig. Pure Android, kein Firlefanz, aktuelle Software, gute Preise. Und der Markt belohnt das. Sie haben mehr verkauft als Google im ganzen Jahr. Allerdings weniger als Apple in einer Woche.
Das nächste Ding ist bei mir am Handgelenk. Die Apple Watch kann lange nicht alles, was geht. Binnen zwei oder drei Jahren wird sie sehr gut auf meine Gesundheit aufpassen können. Heute ersetzt sie mir schon oft das Handy.
Best thing about HomePod :: We are having a quality discussion

Reading David Pogue's test of four speakers, I wasn't surprised by the results:
- Amazon Echo Plus ($150)
- Apple HomePod ($350)
- Google Home Max ($400)
- Sonos One ($200)
He did something the other reviewers did not. Instead of taking the "trust me, I'm an expert" road, he let other people express their preferences in a blind test. The unsurprising result was that Apple HomePod did not win in a landslide. It was far too easy for Apple PR to influence the opinion with controlled test scenarios or biased testers.
When setting up the blind test behind a curtain, David may have created a handicap for the HomePod. Its room correction depends on feedback the speaker receices from the room. When you tune a Sonos One, you do this from the point of view (or rather hearing) of the listener. That process can correct for major flaws like putting a speaker behind a sofa, in a room corner, or inside a cabinet. HomePod corrects the sound from what it hears at its own location. It does not have a microphone where the listener is and certainly not on the other side of a curtain.
Another observation is that those who preferred the Google Home Max where those closer to it, vice versa for the Sonos One. If you would have used the Home Max budget and bought two Sonos One, they might have won hands down.
The important discussion we are having here is that sound does indeed matter. Apple is bringing quality back into the discussion. And that's a good thing.

udoq Kabelbox und Watch-Adapter

Post von udoq mit zwei kleinen Erweiterungen, beide aus Kunststoff: CboxS und Apple Watch Adapter.
Ich habe die sehr langen Ladekabel hinten aus der udoq-Schiene herausgeführt, in Schleifen verlegt und mit Kabelbindern gesichert. Das sieht man bei uns nicht, weil die Schiene vor der Wand steht.
Die Kabelbox löst das Problem ganz elegant. Man zieht die Kabel von unten hinein, klickt den unteren Teil der Box in die ovale Öffnung und verstaut dann die Kabel zusammen mit dem Netzteil in der Box. Zuleitung unten rausführen, Deckel drauf und schon kann man die Schiene von allen Seiten anschauen.
Das schaut absolut super aus, egal ob die Schiene mitten im Raum steht oder direkt vor der Wand. Das Bild zeigt die CboxS an einer udoq 550. 9,90 € - absolute Kaufempfehlung.
Ein bisschen verhaltener bin ich bei dem Apple Watch Adapter, hier in einer udoq 400. Das Teil ist technisch brilliant integriert in die Schiene, ist aber nicht meine liebste Lösung. Der eigene Apple-Watch-Lader wird von hinten in die Adapter eingesteckt, dann schraubt man einen Deckel mit zwei kleinen Torx-Schrauben fest. Das Kabel führt man unsichtbar nach unten in die Schiene.
Was man auf dem Bild nicht gut sieht: auch ein Loop lässt sich von rechts über den Apple Watch Adapter streifen, so dass ein Milaneseband durchpasst. Finanzieller Aufwand: 19,90 für den Apple Watch Adapter und 35 bis 45 € für das magnetische Ladekabel von Apple.
Ich habe statt dessen ein Apple Watch Magnetisches Ladedock. Das ist zwar mit 89 € ordentlich teuer, aber sehr wertig und gefällig auf dem Nachttisch.

I am typing this on my fourth Surface device. Surface, Surface 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro. The original Surface is still being used as a beautiful photo frame in my kitchen, and the latest Surface Pro is the machine I am typing this on. Who would have thought?
I am a serious Mac user with both iMacs and MacBook Pros, and still, Surface Pro has won me over. It's the right size for me, it has touch and pen input, which I am sorely missing every time I use the Macs. And it is a beautiful and elegant machine, which is easy to carry.
Ed Brill is leaving IBM

Ed Brill (@edbrill) will be leaving IBM at the end of next week. And to me, that is an end to an era. When I think of Lotus Notes, I think of two people: Ray Ozzie who created it, and Ed who kept it alive for so long. Ray did not do it alone, and neither did Ed. But those are the two names I will always remember first.
Ed and I go back twenty years. The first ten years were a struggle, the last ten years were not. About ten years ago I knew exactly which buttons to press to make him angry at me. And then I stopped. Ed had developed a theory that I was two people: Volker and vowe. Which is somewhat true in that vowe is only the tip of a larger iceberg. It helped him to no longer get angry. From that moment on, after his second (and not his last) visit here, Ed and Volker became friends.
While Ed was the center of the Yellowsphere of bloggers, IBM never gave him enough credit for what he did. We wanted him on the Lotusphere stage. And when the Notes ship finally took on water, I wanted him to swim away from it. In a way he did and he didn't when he accepted the challenge to roll out Verse to all of IBM's employees. This project was set up to fail, but against all odds it succeeded.
When Ed accepted his final challenge as product VP for Inhi Cho Suh, I was cautiously optimistic that they could transform this business. Unfortunately almost all of the partnerships and acquisitions they had planned failed, and not for the lack of trying.
Ed is finally free to move on. It's a very good move for him, but not for the business he is leaving behind.

iA Writer for Windows is a success

Congrats to Oliver Reichenstein and team for a successful Kickstarter campaign. With an early success in its first few days it looked like a tight race between day 10 and 20 after which I followed the process very closely. If it weren't for a few generous supporters it would have been a near miss.
All is good now. I am already using a beta version and the release should not be too far away. It looks like you will be able to download a test the final product before committing to buy a license key.

I like Matthew Panzarino's four sentence review on Techcrunch:
Apple’s HomePod is easily the best sounding mainstream smart speaker ever. It’s got better separation and bass response than anything else in its size and boasts a nuance and subtlety of sound that pays off the 7 years Apple has been working on it. As a smart speaker, it offers best-in-class voice recognition, vastly outstripping the ability of other smart speakers to hear you trying to trigger a command at a distance or while music is playing, but its overall flexibility is stymied by the limited command sets that the Siri protocol offers. Buy a HomePod if you already have Apple Music or you want to have it and you’re in the market for a single incredibly over-designed and radically impressive speaker that will give you really great sound with basically no tuning, fussing, measuring or tweaking.
Lots of details and lot of other reviews. All reviewers say the speaker sounds amazing and beats the other speakers they compared them to. But they also said it has less power than a Play:1 stereo pair and that most people will not notice that the HomePod sounds better.
I think it's pretty simple. If you own an iPhone and use Apple Music exclusively, you should consider buying a HomePod. If you use Homekit devices, HomePod will be a better hub than Appke TV. And it works best if you live in a small apartment all by yourself. Otherwise you will have to disable quite a bit of the little Siri support it has, or it will all end in tears.
HomePods don't sell Apple Music. Apple Music sells HomePods.

Ziemlich genau vor drei Jahren habe ich Euch vom tizi Flip erzält:
Wenn der Erfinder von USB einst beerdigt wird, dann wird man seinen Sarg noch zweimal heben bevor man ihn endgültig richtig herum ablässt. Ich weiß wirklich nicht, wie oft ich den USB-Stecker gewendet habe. Sehr clever das Ladekabel von tizi. Das passt in beide Richtungen. Verschiedene Längen, auch als Schlüsselanhänger. Und mit Apple-Zertifizierung, damit das iPhone nicht mault.
Das galt für den USB-A Stecker. Und Lightning sowieso. Nun legen die Macher noch mal nach. Auch der MicroUSB-Stecker ist umdrehbar.
Wie genial ist das denn? Hier fliegen jetzt sofort alle normalen MicroUSB-Kabel in die Grabbelkiste. Die Kabel gibt es in schwarz und rot sowie in 15 cm oder 50 cm Länge. Nehmen'se reichlich.

Der EU-Gerichtshof muss derweil die Frage klären, wie frei freie Bilder sind. Das Wall Street Journal, eine Publikation von Rupert Murdoch, schreibt dass Apple Music vielleicht dieses Jahr Spotify überholen könnte, allerdings nur auf den US-amerikanischen Markt beschränkt. Und jeder schreibt's ab, meistens mit dem Zusatz "zumindest". Ich bin nicht sicher, ob Apple PR die Spotify-Aktie schädigen will oder darüber hinweg spielen möchte, dass HomePod nichts anderes als Apple Music kann. Vor einer Woche hatte ich mir die Kickstarter-Kampagne für iA Writer for Windows näher angeschaut und war der Ansicht, das würde eher knapp ausgehen. Seitdem schlossen sich täglich rund ein Dutzend Basic Supporter und vielleicht drei Premium Supporter an. Und brachten damit nur 2262 CHF zusätzlich ein. Damit drohte die Kampagne zu scheitern. Allerdings fanden sich drei Supporter, die noch einmal 2527 CHF in den Klingelbeutel warfen und damit ist iA Writer näher an die Zielgerade gerutscht. Die jetzt noch fehlenden 2094 CHF sind für die verbleibenden knapp vier Tage ein steiles Ziel, aber ich bin mir sicher, dass es mindestens einen weiteren weißen Ritter gibt, der den Deckel am Ende voll macht. Update Mittwoch: Es hat (auch durch vowe.net) noch mal einen ganzen Schwung neuer Unterstützer gegeben. Dazu kamen noch zwei großzügigere Spender, die das Projekt über die Ziellinie geschoben haben. Zwei Tage habt Ihr noch Zeit, Euch zu beteiligen. 19 CHF sind 16,39 €, ein absoluter Witz für diese tolle Software. Ich würde Euch raten, das zu unterstützen. Wer kein Windows, aber dafür Mac oder iPhone/iPad hat, sollte iA Writer schon lange haben: Persönlich geliefert von Hubert und sofort unsichtbar gemacht. From my inbox: Pfeeeew. Gute Nachrichten sind keine Nachrichten. Und so jagten sich die letzten Tage mal wieder die Schlagzeilen um Apple. "iPhone X Failure To Ignite Passion Is Bad News For Tim Cook" (Forbes) oder "Here's Where Apple Went Wrong With the iPhone X" (Fortune). Bei sowas lächle ich immer und warte einfach mal ab, was Apple selbst zu berichten hat. Das teuerste iPhone aller Zeiten hat sich am besten verkauft. Also müssen neue Schlagzeilen her. "iPhone X is the top seller, but total iPhone sales take a step back" (CNET). Ja, aber, aber "... der Umsatz ist vielleicht gestiegen, aber Apple hat nur 77,3 Mio. iPhones verkauft und letztes Jahr waren es 78,3 Mio." Kleine Rechenaufgabe: letztes Jahr war das Quartal 14 Wochen lang und dieses Jahr 13 Wochen. Wieviele iPhones sind das? Circa 5 Millionen. So gesehen hat Apple dieses Jahr vier Millionen mehr verkauft, nicht eine Million weniger. Ach, es ist aber auch ein Kreuz. Überhaupt, ein klägliches Ergebnis. Nur 222 Millionen verdient. Allerdings "every single f&cking day". 5 Milliarden hat das neue Bürogebäude und der ganze Park außen rum gekostet. Apple braucht nicht mal einen Monat, um das zu verdienen. Am Ende liegt es doch an den Produkten. Das iPhone X ist in der Tat das beste Handy, das ich je in der Hand hatte. Es war ein mutiger Schritt, das Erfolgsrezept von 10 Jahren iPhone zu ändern. Mir gefällt es. Den Kunden auch. Und der Smartwatch-Markt? Es gibt keinen Smartwatch-Markt. Seit drei Jahren baut Apple eine Watch, immer noch im selben Design, jedes Jahr besser als zuvor. Dutzende, wenn nicht hunderte anderer Modelle gibt es und kein einziges hat bisher einen Fuß auf den Boden bekommen. Die Schlagzeilen-Macher gieren nach Zahlen, aber es würde mich nicht wundern, wenn Apple den Park allein mit der Apple Watch bezahlen könnte. Apropos bezahlen mit der Apple Watch.
