You have been working on a Sonos controller for years, and have been testing it internally for months. How about you make it work and release it? Maybe as a public beta? As a universal app of course.

IBM shoots Verse in the other foot

IBM now has a Verse app for iPhone. A month after launch. Not for iPad, not for Android. IBM Mobile First, unless it isn't. You can download and install it. But it won't work with IBMverse.com.
What I find really shocking is that IBM is not delivering what IBM General Manager Jeff Schick is promising:
I have no idea why IBM continues to embarrass itself with the botched IBMverse.com site.
Tidal

Vor vier Wochen starteten ein paar Dutzend Pop-Millionäre einen neuen Musikservice mit dem Namen Tidal. Sehr peinliche Veranstaltung. Sonos war vom ersten Tag an als Partner dabei und hat sich bestimmt einen professionelleren Einstieg versprochen. Nichts funktionierte, nicht einmal die versprochenen Testzugänge. Sogar den ersten CEO hat Tidal mittlerweile verschlissen. Der neue CEO findet alles super, auch die Launch-Katastrophe.
Was von Anfang an funktionierte, war die Nutzung von Tidal in Sonos. Dort integriert es sich wie jeder andere Service auch. Und wie bei anderen möchte man lieber die App des Service als den Controller von Sonos nutzen. Kann man aber nicht.
Ganz praktisch: man kann bis zu drei Geräte registrieren, die Tidal offline nutzen dürfen. Das reicht sogar mir.
Sehr spaßig ist die Möglichkeit zwischen drei verschiedenen Streamgeschwindigkeiten wählen zu können. Man könnte sie auch als "zu wenig", "zu viel" und "beknackt viel" bezeichnen. FLAC1411 ist etwas für alte Männer mit schlechten Ohren, die nicht wissen, was sie mit ihrer Kohle noch machen sollen, AAC320 kann kaum jemand mit allerbestem Equipment von AAC256 unterscheiden, und wenn, dann falsch rum. Und AAC+96 braucht eigentlich nur jemand, der seine Mukke über den Handy-Lautsprecher hört.
Wahrscheinlich aber hebt das Gefühl, für höhere Datenraten das Doppelte zu zahlen. Siehe oben, alte Männer ...
Warum also Tidal? Es soll wohl "exclusiven Content" geben, also etwa eine Platte von dem Jay-Z seine Frau. Muss ich aber erst mal suchen.

Sicherheit

Gestern war der erste Tag unserer Heise Security Tour in Stuttgart. Morgen geht es weiter in München. Viele sehr interessante Vortäge, die beste Reihe, die wir bisher hatten. Aber ich habe auch eine neue Erkenntnis: es ist verteufelt schwierig geworden, ein Telefon auszulesen, oder mindestens vollständig auszulesen. War es früher eine Kleinigkeit, ein gesperrtes Telefon zu knacken, so muss man heute sehr unwahrscheinliche Annahmen machen, etwa die Kenntnis des Zertifikats auf einem PC, der eine explizite Vertrauensbeziehung geniesst. Nicht umsonst machen Politiker Druck auf die Hersteller, dem Staat einen privilegierten Zugang zu ermöglichen.
Interessant auch die Situation bei Android Lollipop. Leider hat Google noch mal einen Rückzieher bei der Grundverschlüsselung gemacht, die beim iPhone längst selbstverständlich ist. Schaut man einem Live-Hack eines Android-Telefons zu, dann gibt es ebenfalls eine unrealistische Annahme. Der Angreifer muss die Boot-Chain unterbrechen und ein eigenes Image laden. Macht man das bei einem KNOX-fähigen Samsung, dann zerstört das Telefon beim ersten Versuch die Trustzone. Ohne Trustzone gibt es die Zertifikate nicht mehr, die man für den Zugriff auf verschlüsselte Daten braucht. Kein KNOX mehr, kein Pay. Und zwar für immer.
Das hat sich noch nicht rumgesprochen. Wird es aber.
Hund kann radfahren

Neulich habe ich ein Fahrrad zurückgekauft, das ich vor vielen Jahren einem sehr lieben Freund verkauft hatte. Und nun will ich es auch fahren. Ohne Frau Brandlinger zurückzulassen. Zu meiner großen Freude weiß sie, was zu tun ist. Neben mir laufen, nicht zurückbleiben, vor allem aber nicht voraus laufen. Aber ich muss zügig fahren, so dass sie nicht aus dem Galopp in den Trab fällt. Sonst wird ihr langweilig und sie sucht sich was zur Beschäftigung. ADD nennt man das beim Menschen. 8 km Galopp hat sie bisher locker weggesteckt und wir werden mal schauen, wie weit sie wirklich mag. Der Hund ist gut trainiert. Sehr gut trainiert.
Weil sich nun einige Bewegung auf das Rad verlagert, gebe ich ein Ziel auf: 100 km die Woche muss ich nicht mehr laufen. Aber 10k am Tag. Jeden Tag. Das ist allerdings super einfach. Wenn man sich so einen Kalender macht:

Heute lange auf UPS gewartet, damit meinem Nachbarn Max die bestellten Uhren nicht durch die Lappen gehen. Und dann den ganzen Abend damit rumgespielt. Das ist die große. Etwa so groß wie eine Pebble Steel aber viel edler. Eine normale Pebble aus Kunststoff sieht größer und klobiger aus.
Apple hat bisher keine für mich gefunden. Ohne ausgiebigen Test enthalte ich mich jeden Urteils und nutze weiter die Pebble. Die funkioniert auch mit dem Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, das mir gerade große Freude macht.
3,5 Millionen Schritte und alles ist anders

Vor einem Jahr schrieb der geschätzte Kollege Dr. Michael Spehr in der FAZ über Ein Jahr mit dem Fitnessarmband Jawbone Up:
3,5 Millionen Schritte und kein Fortschritt
Nach einem Jahr mit dem Fitness-Armband steht fest: Die Quantified-Self-Bewegung überschätzt maßlos die Wirkung. Und Smartphones zählen inzwischen auch.
3,5 Millionen Schritte. In einem Jahr. Was für eine unglaubliche Leistung, dachte ich damals. Und offensichtlich war Michael froh, sein Band wieder ablegen zu können. Also bat ich ihn, es mir zu schicken. Nach ein paar Wochen und den ersten Tests schickte mir Jawbone dann das neuere UP24, das nach etwa vier Monaten ausfiel. Viele Bänder sollten folgen, am Ende reichte mir das Smartphone.
Im April lief ich pro Tag 4449 Schritte, im Mai 7388, im Juni schon 13729, im Juli dann 18030. Im August erreichte ich 18030 und erlebte dann im September und Oktober einen kleinen Einbruch auf 14038 und 13411 Schritte. Ich hatte eine Fußsohle überstrapaziert und musste bremsen. Immerhin 2.5 Millionen Schritte war ich bis Ende Oktober in sechseinhalb Monaten gelaufen. Und ich wusste jetzt, was geht.
Anfang November ein neues Ziel: Die 3,5 Millionen Schritte, die Michael in einem halben Jahr gelaufen war, wollte ich in der halben Zeit schaffen. Double or nothing. Zwei operationale Ziele stellten sich als realistisch dar: kein Tag unter 10000 Schritte, keine Woche unter hundert Kilometer.
Heute habe ich das Ziel erreicht, ein paar Tage vor Ablauf des halben Jahres. 3,5 Millionen Schritte, niemals unter 100 km die Woche, niemals unter 10000 Schritte. Mit dem langsamen Anlauf vor einem Jahr sind das mehr als 6 Millionen.
Und alles ist anders als vor einem Jahr. Mir ist kein Weg mehr zu weit, ich bin viel stärker als je zuvor und leichter als irgendwann in den letzten zwanzig Jahren. Der Blutdruck ist niedriger, der Puls langsamer. Ich bin Michael unglaublich dankbar, dass er mir diese Karotte hingehalten hat. Und ohne diesen beiden Trainer hätte ich das nie geschafft:

Recently, I helped a company move from Google Apps to the IBM Connections Cloud. They were attracted by IBM Verse and were heavy users of Google Mail and they needed a new way to manage the flood of email that was coming in and impacting their productivity. They did their migration in mid-March.
What follows is a manual process for each mail file, via a mail client, leaving behind all contacts and calendars. You can't make this up.

Nun liefern die Kanadier mit dem Leap noch ein reines Touchgerät nach.

Galaxy S6 Edge :: Positive Erfahrungen

Seit ein paar Tagen nutze ich ausschließlich das neue Galaxy S6 Edge und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. So wie es aktuell ausschaut, bleibt das auch so, da mich Apple noch nicht mit einer Uhr bedroht. ;-)
- Die Kamera macht einfach erstaunlich gute Bilder. Und zwar ohne jeden Aufwand. Man muss nur auf das Licht achten, den Rest macht das Galaxy. Beispiele auf Ello und Instagram.
- Auf dem Display des Galaxy sehen die Bilder noch mal besser aus als auf allen anderen Geräten. Einfach weil es besser ist. Kräftige Farben, hell, auch draußen gut ablesbar.
- Der Fingerabdrucksensor ist so gut, dass ich die Möglichkeit ausgeschaltet habe, das Gerät automatisch zu entsperren, wenn ich zu Hause bin oder wenn die Pebble in der Nähe ist. Ich lege einfach stets den Daumen auf den Sensor um das Gerät aufzuwecken. Würde es schon entsperrt sein, dann müsste ich über den Bildschirm streichen.
- Drahtloses Laden. Das habe ich sehr vermisst, als ich von Lumia auf iPhone gewechselt bin. Jetzt ist es wieder da. Schön. Bei einem Modell funktioniert es nicht, wahrscheinlich wegen falscher Position, die anderen aber erkennen und laden das Galaxy einwandfrei. IKEA rüstet nach.
- Ich glaube, der Akku hält locker einen Tag durch. Ich weiß es aber nicht, weil das Galaxy bei mir eigentlich dauernd voll geladen ist, selbst unterwegs.
Ich kämpfe noch mit zwei Kleinigkeiten: das Gerät lässt sich zwar sicher an den beiden Außenkanten greifen, aber man ist schnell mit dem Finger auf dem Bildschirm und löst dort Aktionen auf, die man gar nicht will. Und außerdem suche ich noch eine "Do not disturb"-Einstellung, bei der trotzdem der Wecker funktioniert.

BlackBerry zum halben Preis

289 € kostet der neue BlackBerry Leap, der in den nächsten Wochen geliefert wird. Für knapp 40 € weniger bekommt man nun einen Z30. Das ist ein höherwertiges Gerät mit den gleichen Specs wie der Leap. Etwas schnellere CPU, AMOLED statt LCD, höherwertiges Gehäuse. Für mich wäre die Wahl einfach. Den sehr guten Q10 gibt's für 200 €, einen etwas gewagten Q5 für 120 €.
Selbst die neuen Geräte passt BlackBerry um 50 € nach unten an, trotz schlechterem €-Kurs. Sie werden wissen, warum.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge :: Going full in

I have been carrying two phones for a couple of days now: my iPhone 6 Plus and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Both the screen and the camera drew me to the Samsung device. Today I swapped the SIMs again so that the Edge became the #1 device that has to be with me and the iPhone became #2.
There are a few downsides. HomeTalk and Imgur are not nearly as good as on the iPhone. And I am missing a few apps like Black, Hyperlapse and Layout. When you look at my screens there may be one program you don't know. That's Infinit which I use to move around files of any device. Between my own devices but also sharing with others. It works cross platform on Android and iOS, as well as OS X and Windows.
Sonos & Mixcloud

Mixcloud is in beta on Sonos. And it's currently my primary source for music. Just follow a few contributors and you have a never ending supply of new music. DJ.Jurag uploads one or two mixes every day for instance. And there is 'Deep winter.', my all time favorite from Tom Lodge who heads Sonos PR in Europe.
Accounts on Mixcloud are free, there are no inline adverts. Enjoy while it lasts.
Jawbone UP needs a STFU option for 'Smart Coach"

I installed Jawbone UP once again just to check if it had become usable. Unfortunately it hasn't. There is still no STFU option for 'Smart Coach'. On the right you see Withings Health Mate. What a breath of fresh air in comparison.

Wenn die Sensoren nicht so gut funktionieren

Übernächste Woche gehen wir wieder auf Tour mit der Heise Security Konferenz. Letzte April-Woche Stuttgart und München, erste Mai-Woche dann Hamburg und Köln. Und wir haben ein Hammer-Programm! Ich habe extra auf einen eigenen Vortragsslot verzichtet, damit wir genug Platz haben für die Experten, die diesmal dabei sind.
Das Thema lautet "Mit IT-Unsicherheit leben: Bedrohungen entdecken, Angriffe aufklären". Es scheint ja nur noch zwei Arten von Unternehmen zu geben: die, die schon gehackt wurden, und die, denen das noch bevor steht.
Dabei sind:
- Alexander Geschonneck, der in Deutschland (vielleicht sogar EU) führende Experte in Sachen Computer-Forensik. Autor des Standardwerks zu diesem Thema. Partner bei KPMG und als solcher bei der Aufklärung vieler Fälle beteiligt.
- Stefan Strobel, Geschäftsführerender Gesellschafter und Gründer von cirosec, Spezialisten für IT- und Informationssicherheit, der über neue Bedrohungen referieren wird.
- Dr. Michael Spreitzenbarth, der beim Siemens CERT arbeitet und sich mit der forensischen Analyse von Smartphones und deren Apps beschäfigt.
- Dr. Christoph Wegener (wecon.it-consulting) und Joerg Heidrich (Justitiar Heise Verlag), die gemeinsam ein heikles Thema behandeln: Wie protokolliert man Nutzer- und Mitarbeiterdaten rechtssicher und technisch richtig.
- Philipp Buchegger, Mitarbeiter der Pentest-Experten SySS GmbH, zeigt "Pass the hash" - Die unterschätzte Bedrohung für Windows-Netze und diskutiert Möglichkeiten, sich gegen Angriffe zu schützen.
- Jürgen Schmidt (Chefredakteur Heise Security) beleuchtet ein Thema, das bei der Verschlüsselung häufig unterschätzt wird: Reale Angriffe auf die Verschlüsselung konzentrieren sich nicht auf das Knacken der Verfahren sondern auf die Schlüssel.
Nach dem Mittagessen moderiere ich ein Podium, auf dem jeweils ein Experte vom BSI mit unseren Referenten über das IT-Sicherheitgesetz diskutiert. Brauchen wir eine Meldepflicht für IT-Security-Fälle?
Mal sehen, vielleicht biete ich auch noch spontan "Walk&Talk"-Sessions an. ;-)

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge :: First impressions

After having played with the Edge extensively, these are my impressions:
- Excellent design and build quality. No reservations.
- The Edge is a total gimmick. Save 150 € and get the S6. Unless you are like me. I once had a black MacBook which cost 150 € more than a white one. Why? Because I could.
- The Edge has the best screen I have ever seen in a mobile device. And the best camera. It shoots incredible photos, even in full automatic. And then you enjoy them on the best display.
- Fingerprint sensor finally works like it always did on the iPhone and unlike the S5.
- Wireless charging. Yes! (And which completely failed tonight. Hot and empty.)
- NFC. Yes!
The Edge is so incredibly desirable. And there is useful stuff everywhere. It can control your TV via IR. It can remain unlocked as long as it sees your Pebble in close proximity. Since Pebble learned to work with actionable notifications like any Android Wear device, it becomes more useful.
And yet, I can't get to terms with the software. Every app asks me if I want to open this link in Chrome or Internet. I cannot shut the duplicates down. The keyboard does not work nearly as well for me as the Apple keyboard. I am missing a few apps like Layout and Hyperlapse, some apps are much worse than on iOS. The Withings app can use the Galaxy as a step counter but it only does so in a strange way where it first has to wait for Google Health to do its thing. If you only ever worked with Android, this is a excellent machine for a very high price. The S6 matches the iPhone 6, the Edge is 50 € more than the iPhone 6 Plus.
My SIM has returned to the iPhone 6 Plus while I continue to explore the Edge.
The Watch

Cynics may say it does too little. Philistines may say it does too much. But for me it does just what I want it to do when I want it done. The things which are not done stay out of the way. This discretion is just as important as the effectiveness of action.
Neue Funktionen auf den Withings-Waagen

Mit dem Firmware-Update für die WS-50 (1521) und die WS-30 (701) gibt es jetzt zwei neue Anzeigen: Wetter und Schritte. So kann man nach dem Wiegen sehen, wie das Wetter vormittags und nachmittags wird und wieviele Schritte man am Vortag gelaufen ist. Diese Anzeigen lassen sich für jeden Benutzer individuell einstellen. Ich habe bei mir zum Beispiel Puls und Luftqualität abgeschaltet, dafür aber Wetter eingeschaltet. Die Anzeigen brauchen Internet-Verbindung, gehen also nur bei Wifi-Konfiguration.
Walk and talk, Monday edition

Yesterday I walked with Max. And we spoke about smart watches. He has made three appointments for trying on the Apple watch: Sports, Watch, Edition. I learned quite a few things I did not know.
- When you try on a watch, it does not run the full software but just a video. This saves them from resetting the watch.
- It's not immediately obvious how to use an Apple watch. You try to use the button as a home button but it only does one thing: bring up a dial with your favorite contacts.
- The apps that come with the watch are nice. But you can't write 3rd party native apps. Those are all companion apps that largely work on the iPhone.
- Without native apps you can't make watch faces for the Apple watch. And that saves it from all the geeky ugliness you see on Pebble.
- Loading a 3rd party app on Watch takes forever. You probably are not going to do this once the novelty wears off.
- There is a huge difference in appearance between the alumininium Sports and the stainless steel watch. One is matte, the other is shiny. Really shiny. And there is one config sorely missing: Sports with black sports band. You can only get this either in dark grey aluminium or shiny stainless steel. (See photo above.)
- The sports band is really hard to put on. First you close it and then you have to tuck the excess band in. At least that is how the Apple reps put it on your arm. I guess you will find a better way by first tucking it in and then closing it.
- Apple Watch is much smaller and thinner than you think it is. Most people will want the bigger one.
Think of Apple Watch as the first generation iPhone. That was also matte aluminium without any native apps. And it was great.
I have thought long and hard about how I use the Pebble and what I like about it. It's mostly notifications, and hardly ever apps. They do load instantly but there is no point in looking at your watch for more than a second. Beyond that, you just use the phone.
Samsung breaks the chain

For years Samsung brought out a string of uninspired successors to the wildly successful Galaxy S. Cheap back covers, faux leather, faux metal. They all felt like a fraud to me. Even when the electronics inside were as perfect as the Note 4, I just could not stand them.
The Galaxy S6 Edge changes everything.
It's clearly a Samsung design, even if there are bits and pieces you have seen on an iPhone before. But you won't confuse it with an Apple device. The build quality is excellent. Glass is glass, metal is metal, materials don't lie anymore.
I prefer the Apple design language, but that's only a matter of personal taste.
What I am always struggling with on Android devices, is the software. The bulk vendors add. Not all of it is crapware, but I don't need a Photos and a Gallery App. I don't need a Calendar and S-Planner. The list goes on. Good news: Samsung is making progress. You can now disable some of the bloat, you uninstall other bits and pieces. Apple is no stranger to this problem. With your latest update you received an Apple watch app. Even if you have no intention to ever buy one. (As if you had a choice.)
And then there are the apps. There are plenty on Android, but available does not mean good. Or good enough. Case in point is Home Talk, which I use to make VoIP calls when at home. Where are Hyperlapse or Layout, both by Instagram?
Nevertheless, I am swapping the SIM out of my beloved iPhone 6 Plus and using the Edge as my main device. That's a first. No other Samsung was good enough for that. It works with the Pebble Steel on my wrist. It won't work with an Apple Watch. So I am keeping the iPhone close.
Forrest Gump

Der Sonntag sieht ziemlich lasch aus. Dabei bin ich heute 20.624 Schritte gelaufen. Er sieht so lasch aus, weil ich am Freitag erstmals über 44 km gekommen bin. An einem Tag, aber nicht an einem Stück. In der ganzen Woche war ich erstmals über 200 km. Am Donnerstag wusste ich, das kann klappen. Und nach dem Freitag war klar, Sonntag wird ein (relativer) Ruhetag. Ich rechne jetzt gerne in Marathondistanzen pro Woche. Zwei sind zuwenig, drei ist prima, vier war bisher Rekord. Und nun fünf.
Für mehr als 40000 Steps am Tag gab es einen Forrest Gump Badge. Jetzt will ich natürlich wissen, was es bei 50000 gibt. Da war ich am Freitag nah dran. Diese Woche lagen übrigens Kilometer und 1000 Schritte nahe beieinander. Die Schrittlänge ist nicht fest. Je schneller ich laufe, desto länger werden die Schritte.
Diese Lauferei ist gut für alles. Man wird fitter, zufriedener, insgesamt ausgeglichener. Und man kann so viele Marmeladenbrote essen wie man will, ohne dicker zu werden.
FAQ: Wo nimmt man die Zeit her? A: Man verteilt die 86400 Sekunden, die man am Tag hat, anders. Kein Facebook, kein Fernsehen, kein Mittagessen. Und Freitag habe ich mir mal frei genommen, weil ich meine Steuererklärung schon abgegeben habe. Das ging in einem früheren Leben auch nicht.

iFixIt :: Siemens Kochfeld

Wir haben ein acht Jahre altes Kochfeld von Siemens. Mit dem wir bisher sehr zufrieden sind. Wir waren damals feige und hätten Induktion kaufen sollen, aber für ein "normales" Glas-Kochfeld funktioniert es sehr gut. Komplette Touchbedienung, wunderbar zu reinigen.
Vor ein paar Wochen fing es an zu mucken. Eine Fehlermeldung jagte die andere. Auch mit der Sicherung einmal komplett ausschalten half nicht. Bevor man den Siemens-Service einfach beauftragt, googlet man heutzutage. Dabei findet man viel Voodoo-Glauben, Berichte über horrende Rechnungen. Aber soviel war klar: der Service würde das Controller-Board tauschen und inklusive neuem Board, Anfahrt, Montage dann so ca 300 Euro berechnen. Viel für eine Reparatur, wenig im Vergleich zum Neukauf.
Wenn man sich ein wenig mit Elektronik auskennt, dann kennt man den typischen Fehler, der sich mit der Zeit einschleicht: platzende Elkos. Die Bauteile haben Specs von ein paar Tausend Stunden. Bei 8760 Stunden im Jahr wundert man sich, dass die im Dauerbetrieb überhaupt acht Jahre halten sollen. Machen sie aber. Und dann ist irgendwann Schluss.
So wie bei diesem Kochfeld. Sicherung raus, Kochfeld aus der Platte gehoben, umgedreht und aufgeschraubt, und schon war der Bösewicht identifiziert. Jetzt brauchte es nur noch ein Ersatzteil für 0,24 € und jemanden, der weiß an welchem Ende der Lötkolben warm wird. Diese Rolle hat dann mein alter Freund Rolf übernommen. Schon am nächsten Morgen war er da. Und hat das Kochfeld perfekt repariert. Für einen Kaffee. Danke, Rolf!

CleanMyMac 3

Every couple of weeks I clean my Macbook drive to keep the machine lean. For over a year I have relied on CleanMyMac 2. Now MacPaw, the Ukrainian company behind this program, has delivered a new version: CleanMyMac 3. It's not a free upgrade, but you can get the new version for 50% off.
CleanMyMac 3 provides a number of new features:
- Remove email attachments from your local mail folders. That's a biggie.
- Remove iTunes junk. That was very little on my Macbook.
- Run all the maintenance scripts that are scheduled for the night, when your machine may have been sleeping. You can do that manually but now you have a simple way to do it.
- Enhance your privacy be removing cookies, search history etc from all your browsers. And you can just remove the last hour, for whatever reason you would want to do that.
- Finally there are health and performance monitors for you Mac. Have not tried those yet.
If you ever just deleted your browser cache and saw how much that has improved its speed, you want to clean your Mac. Big time. And if you tried uninstalling an app you no longer need, you will find traces of it all over the place.
The best thing I can say about CleanMyMac is that version 2 never shot me in the foot. This is dangerous territory. When you let an app clean your machine, it could possibly mess it up big time. CleanMyMac has never done this. And I expect version 3 to follow suit.

IBM Verse vs IBMVerse.com

One of the best reader comments I received last week was that IBM Verse solves an IBM problem and is sold as a product. I think this is very true. If you look a lot like IBM, then Verse solves a problem for you. That means, your company is pretty large, is multinational, has a deep reporting structure and you receive plenty of emails, that you need to work with between meetings. IBM uses Connections and has everybody in those Connections Profiles that Verse uses to display business cards and discover reporting structure for the people in your mail header. Most of the emails are internal, so Verse knows everything about everybody.
IBMVerse.com, the public free offering, is completely different. You should not be able to see the profiles of all the other people on IBMVerse.com, which you currently can. That can be fixed, but then you are alone and cannot reap the benefits of Verse. You cannot import your existing mails, your contacts, your calendars, at least not in any meaningful way. There are tons of features missing that you can find in competing offerings. And last but not least, you have to switch to an IBMVerse.com email address with questionable future. IBM also stated that IBMVerse.com should not be used for production.
IBM Verse is a very good upgrade path for current iNotes users. Its search capability is well above what most corporate mail provides today. Verse has great features to track mail that still needs to be answered and the interface is a joy to use. IBMVerse.com is none of that.
My current thinking is that IBM should close down IBMVerse.com for good. It's only giving IBM Verse a bad name. Verse was designed to be used in a way that cannot be simulated on IBMVerse.com. There were good intentions building it, but the execution is unacceptable.
Kündigen ist schwierig, auch bei O2

Neue Optionen buchen ist ganz einfach. Aber den Vertrag kündigen, das geht nicht mit einem Klick. O2 hat also meine Kündigung vorgemerkt. Jetzt muss ich aber noch mal anrufen.
Warum kündige ich? Erstens wird man als Altkunde stets schlechter gehandelt als ein Neukunde. Nach zwei Jahren Treue auf diesem Vertrag kosten auf einmal bisherige Inklusivleistungen extra. Zweitens funktioniert O2 häufig nicht. Theoretisch habe ich eine tolle 3G-Verbindung, praktisch kommen aber keine Daten durch.

You recently asked me how the Passport is doing at night, compared to the iPhone 6 Plus. Above is the iPhone photo: 1/4 s, ISO 500, f/2.2. Below is the Passport photo. 1/2.5 s, ISO 888, f/2.0. Both were in full auto with flash disabled. The foreground is lit with a 3000K 7W LED bulb. The bright light is the moon and the sky is as clear as it gets.
I also tried Night Mode on Passport, but that did not render a good photo. It keeps the shutter open twice as long a the same ISO setting, which was too much for shooting without tripod. I can just master a quarter of a second at this focal length.
While I like the iPhone photo better, I find the Passport shot a decent photo.

We have compared those limits before. Then I met Jeff at CeBIT where he promised to raise the limits at least tenfold. Currently those limits are the same as before, only the number of mails you can send went from 25 to 100.
'Verse Basic is not intended for use as a production mail client'. Now I am stuck. What are you supposed to do with it? It cannot import any old mail, so how do you get to experience it?
On the upside, you can now use Internet Explorer. The latest version would be IE11.
Everybody on IBMverse.com is one big family

Profiles on IBMVerse.com are based on Connections. Which is a tool to be used inside an enterprise. On IBMVerse.com you all belong to one enterprise: IBMVerse.com. Each of the other IBMVerse.com users is your colleague. That means you can view all the information that they have entered in their profile. By default that is their name and their mail address. When you are looking up a profile, the userid is part of the url. Just increment the number and you get to the next profile. Rinse, repeat. That means you can scrape all profiles with a very simple script.
IBM has created the first public mail service where you can look up email addresses for everybody else. And all the profile information they volunteered. It's like Facebook without privacy.
Microsoft Band peeling

When I put my Band on after my morning shower it was fine. I wore it all day, and when I came home after my afternoon run I removed it for another shower when I saw, well, this: ... The plastic/rubbery coating on the batter covers had peeled almost completely off. It appeared to happen in a single day and for no reason I can identify.
Read the whole story. He takes it into a Microsoft store. Nobody had seen this problem before. And when a store clerk checks his band it started to peel as well.

The press release ends with a single sentence about ibmverse.com:

That ends the confusion. You can either buy Verse in SmartCloud or you can use it for free on ibmverse.com.
IBM plans to offer new native mobile apps for Verse that integrate with the IBM MobileFirst platform, including IBM MobileProtect, and starting with IBM iOS for iPhone later this month. IBM will follow that release with apps for Android and iPad in the second quarter.
iPhone this month, iPad and Android this quarter. I have tried standard open protocols but cannot access the mailbox on ibmverse.com. Maybe it's there and not enabled. Maybe it's missing altogether. For a company that prides itself being MobileFirst, that is a gaping hole.
IBM Verse im täglichen Einsatz

Meine Empfehlung für alle interessierten Notes/Domino Kunden ist deshalb die IBM SmartCloud Hybrid Konfiguration und nicht nur ein Freemium Test Account.
Dieser Einschätzung schließe ich mich an.
What IBM should do to improve IBMVerse.com

As I explained in my post Verse beyond Powerpoint it is currently not really possible to experience the power of Verse. But IBM could take a few hints from Microsoft how to make it work. Microsoft got the onboarding right.
- When you sign up for Outlook.com, Microsoft will import your existing Gmail account. Your mail, your contacts, your calendars.
- Microsoft lets you register mail aliases. You can use them to send mail "on behalt of". Even when using mobile clients. Outlook.com lets me send mail as vowe@vowe.net.
- I can forward incoming mail from Gmail and then reply from Outlook.com. So it's not a one-time import, but from that day on my mail keeps flowing. As explained above, I can even reply with my existing mail address.
- Outlook.com has no quota. You can store as much email as you like. There are restrictions on how many mails you can send. As you use the service, these limits are relaxed. Microsoft learned from Hotmail.com how to keep spammers out.
Once you get past the setup process, there are quite a few useful features to discover. Sweep comes to mind. And the big fat undo button you see above.
One more thing: You don't take servers down for maintenance these days anymore. Maybe in an enterprise, but not as an Internet cloud service provider. Not unless you have complete failover that is transparent to the user. You switch the service on, and then you never switch it off. And for those cases where you fail, you prepare a better explanation than this.
Verse beyond PowerPoint

Now that Verse went GA (General Availability) I can tell you a bit about what I found out using it.
The basics are working. You can send and receive email. You can attach files to emails, you can attach files to the Files section. Search works really well. I would not call the UX self-explaining, but it's reasonably easy to figure out how you are supposed to perform simple tasks.
Having said that, the list of things that do not work is rather long.
- When you open the account there is no option to import existing email or calendars. Your address book is empty, and you can add contacts from a comma separated file created by Outlook. There is no way to import from an existing account in the cloud, and you cannot import a vCard file with all your contacts.
- When you receive an email, you cannot add the sender to the address book. It will not automatically do so when you reply to an email you received, or when you type in a new address.
- When you manually add a contact, you cannot assign a photo to the contact. This is a problem, since the top row of Verse shows bubbles with your most important contacts and you have no way to assign photos to those contacts.
- The concept "personal debt" does not work. You can assign a "reply by tomorrow" to an email. It will show up in your "Waiting For" but not in "Needs Action" for the recipient. You can do this manually by assigning Needs Action to incoming mail, but Verse will not do it for you.
- When you share a file from your Files section, the person you are sharing your file does not get a notification.
- When you share a file in an email to a group of people and one recipient has an outside address, the recipient cannot get the file.
- All profiles are public.
- You cannot set your mail footer.
- You cannot set your Out Of Office profile.
- Network invitations are classified as spam.
- You cannot see the messages IBM classified as spam.
- You cannot choose an email address.
- There doesn't appear to be a way to recover a lost password. Other than sending an email to WebMaster@ibmverse.com.
- Verse has not figured out who my important contacts are, even after reading hundreds of mails.
- When people add you to your network, you will not get a notification that you have to accept the request. You only find out if you view your own profile.
In summary: you have no chance to experience the power of Verse by signing up for an account. If somebody migrates your company account into a Verse environment with full profiles in Connections, many of my issues go away. But a test drive? Not by a long shot.
The sign-up process is currently broken. IBM is soliciting sign-ups, but does not deliver. This should not bother you too much, since IBM needs time to fix the issues above.
