Wer auf Reisen immer wieder mal in ein Hotelzimmer kommt, das zu wenig Steckdosen hat, dem hilft dieser Powercube. Rundum vier Steckdosen, einfach in die Wand zu stecken. Und auf der Vorderseite zwei USB-Anschlüsse mit 2A. Damit lädt man ruckzuck gleichzeitig iPhone und iPad. Oder was sonst 2A zapfen kann.
Gibt es auch mit Verlängerungskabel statt Stecker. So etwas wohnt auf meinem Schreibtisch und hat dort nach vier Jahren den Belkin Lader abgelöst.

Eleven days without the UP24 band

My UP24 has died eleven days ago and Jawbone spent about a week letting me test this, and then test that. Finally they have decided they want to replace it. All this time I have been missing a lot of data. To the point where my exercise history has a big hole in it. Although I can track my steps in other apps, there is no way to add them to my account manually.
And then the UP app has been updated today. If you are on iOS 8.02 and at least an iPhone 5S, you can now read the Health data into the UP app. That means my iPhone can track me without an UP band, as long as I carry it with me. Last Thursday for instance I clocked 20.000 steps on the iPhone, without a band. The other days I have mostly been using the BlackBerry Passport with only 7000 steps on Wednesday and very few steps on the other days.
There you have both the UPs and DOWNs. Only a wearable will track you all the time. And if that wearable breaks you can now fall back on the iPhone. I wish I had had this app 11 days ago. And this app is new. It's not an update of the old app, although it looks the same. Follow the link.

BlackBerry Passport went off the charger Monday at 6:41 and has been in the hand of a real user. Now it's Wednesday night 21:30 and the battery holds 30%. Technically it would survive another day. But we are recharging just in case. The steep fall on Tuesday evening was a reboot loop caused by a hanging power button.
For comparison, mine also went back on the charger after three days (minus one night):

There are no games, no ads, no reach, no LIKE MY PAGE, no old friends from school. No need to register, "secure" your name, not contribute and then leave.
Just continue with Facebook.

BlackBerry Blend

BlackBerry Blend is like a remote for your BlackBerry. It runs on any of your private or business devices, on Android tablets and iPads, as well as Windows PC or Macs. You see what is happening in the BlackBerry Hub and a number of apps and you can act on it. Instead of holding your BlackBerry, you are working with a full keyboard and mouse or at least a larger tablet.
How does it talk to your BlackBerry? You install the software, load the Blend app on BlackBerry 10.3 and pair them. Once you have done that, you can just call the app any time. If your BlackBerry is locked, or the Workspace in your BlackBerry is locked, you have to enter the password that unlocks it.
How do they connect? Over the net or a USB cable. With over the net I mean Wifi or even the mobile network. You could have your BlackBerry at home and be out and about, and you would still be able to access your work device if the need arises. Now remember, a proper business BlackBerry has a BES at the other end of the network. It can walk right into your Intranet, see your fileserver, your mailserver, potentially even your PC. Within the network restrictions your IT imposes. But technically, it's inside your firewall, and the VPN connection is provided by BlackBerry.
You can reply to an email and attach a file, without ever downloading it to either your personal device or your BlackBerry. You can view attachments, but Blend will leave nothing behind. It's all as if you are only holding your BlackBerry, just way bigger.
BlackBerry has tried this before, when they designed the PlayBook to be a companion to your BlackBerry, connected via the fiddly Bluetooth stack. This time, it's your tablet, your PC, your Mac, the one that you like. Blend is just an application, no IT restrictions. Run it or don't.
This sounds lovely, doesn't it? There is only one problem. Your BlackBerry is managed by IT. At least the Workspace is managed by IT. And the first business BlackBerry I tried with Blend came back with a message.

Why vowe.net is half German and half English

Also, how come your Blackberry review was in German & the iPhone review was in English? How do you decide?
I get this question a lot, and I am going to reply to it in English.
I write most of my posts in English since I have many friends who do not understand German. Not a bit of German. On the other hand, many of my readers do understand English or at least a bit of English. As a general rule, I comment in the same language as the text I am referring to. Since the BlackBerry post relates to another text and a video in German, I use German. The iPhone post does not relate to any German post, so it gives me the opportunity to write in English.
Often there is no decision process. Text just comes out in either language. Of course my German is way better than my English, but I think my English is good enough to make myself clear.
When I say I get this question a lot, then I mean from people who do not understand German. Those who understand both German and English just read in either language. From my FAQ:
"I would like to comment, but my English is terrible."
Write a comment. I don't care if your English is terrible. It will only get better if you use it. If you can express yourself better in German, then use German. I understand both. Don't be concerned that others might not be able to understand German. They can learn if they want.
BlackBerry Passport

Diese Woche war ich auf Einladung von BlackBerry auf dem Launch des neuen Passport in London. Und das war eine sehr gute Präsentation. BlackBerry hat es verstanden, die Highlights rüberzubringen. Wer ein bisschen was zum wie und warum lesen will, sollte vielleicht meinen Heise-Artikel lesen. Dort gibt es auch noch ein Video. Oder hier, einmal durch den Youtube-Encoder gekurbelt:
Hier will ich noch mal ein bisschen mehr persönliche Meinung loswerden. Ich habe jetzt seit beinahe zwei Wochen mit dem Gerät gearbeitet und bin schlicht begeistert. Die Scheffin war völlig aus dem Häuschen. Die Qualität ist meiner Ansicht nach noch höher als bei den sauteuren Porsche Design BlackBerrys. Die Art und Weise, wie hier eine Hardware-Tastatur auf dem Bildschirm ergänzt wird, ist vorbildlich. Die häufigsten Tasten gibt es in Hardware, die seltenen auf dem Glas. Zugegebenermaßen funktioniert das in englisch besser als in deutsch, weil man an den Umlauten etwas hängt. Wie man mit der Tastatur als Trackpad zaubert, das muss einem auch mal jemand zeigen, selbst wenn die Tutorials auf dem Gerät schon sehr gut sind.
Das Design ist sowohl modern als auch retro, ein bisschen wie Steampunk. Die Materialien sind gut und lügen nicht. Was wie Stahl aussieht, ist Stahl, was wie Glas aussieht, ist Glas. Die 10.3er Software ist noch mal besser geworden, ein bisschen was sieht man in meinem Video.
Das ist mit Abstand der beste und wertigste BlackBerry, den ich je gesehen habe. Es ist BlackBerry zu wünschen, dass sie sich mit so tollen Geräten noch länger im Business halten können.

We have come a long way

You probably have read lots of iPhone reviews and I am going to spare you another one. What you see above is an iPhone 6 Plus and an iPhone. They are both from Apple, and they both represent the state of the art, one in 2007, the other in 2014. There have been phones with more features than the original iPhone in 2007, which was dwarfed in any conceivable way by a 3.5G Nokia N95, one of the best phones ever made. And it still won through simplicity.
We have had a couple of iterations. From the top: original iPhone, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. I spare you the ugly 3G/S.
iPhones have grown from holding a 3.5" and 4" screen to 4.7" and 5.5". People like large phones, since the displays are more enjoyable the larger they are. I will not be surprised by 13" tablets.
Ever since the iPhone 4S came with an 8 MP camera, I left my point&shoot camera behind. And they keep getting better without participating in the pixel race. This alone shows how smart Apple is. There is always a trade-off between camera size, sensor size and phone thinness. Apple solves this by letting the camera lens stick out from the back of the phone. Without large embellishments, just the lens. There are two areas where Lumia is significantly better: low light, and sound recording. Other than that, I am quite happy with an iPhone camera.
Which leads us to the all important question: do you want one? And if, which one? If you are holding an iPhone 5 or 5S in your hand, you most likely will not want one unless you are still paying phones through outrageous monthly service fees. If you have an iPhone 4S, you will find that upgrading to iOS 8 is just too much for it.
Both new iPhones feel really nice in your hand. The sharp edges introduced in the iPhone 4 and later those in the iPhone 5 are gone. You see the difference in size between the iPhone 5S and the 6, but you don't feel it much. If you want something like your previous iPhone, only better, get the 6. Within a few days, you will still marvel at the display. But you will quickly forget that this is new.
If you want to take it up a notch, get the 6 Plus. For me it was never a question. I have used a Lumia 1520 and loved it. Big is good. While both machines are nearly identical, your most important upgrade is a huge battery. The screen is technically somewhat better, and the camera has optical image stabilization, given you sharper photos. But the battery makes the difference.
There are other great smartphones out there, but if money is not an issue, then you want the big one.
Withings Blood Pressure Monitor

Jetzt geht es hier rund mit Withings. Nach der Waage probiere ich jetzt mal den drahtlosen Blutdruckmesser aus. Das Gerät wird in einem schicken Karton geliefert, in dem man es auch aufbewahren kann. Wie bei jeder Blutdruckmessung legt man eine Manschette um den Oberarm, setzt sich an einen Tisch und legt den Arm auf. Dann kann es losgehen. Nachdem iPhone und Gerät gepairt sind, muss man in Zukunft nur noch einen Knopf drücken und auf dem iPhone startet nach einer Nachfrage Health Mate und geht dort in das Messpanel. Einmal Start antippen und los geht der Vorgang. Aufpumpen, ablassen, fertig. Angetrieben wird das von vier handelsüblichen AA-Batterien, die schon fertig montiert mitgeliefert werden.
Health Mate kennen wir schon vom Schrittzählen, und wie man sieht, laufe ich nicht immer über 20.000 Schritte. ;-)
Bluthochdruck ist eine Erkrankung, die man nicht spürt. Deshalb misst jeder Arzt, wann immer er kann. Wer gesund ist, der muss nicht so oft messen. Aber wer an Bluthochdruck leidet, für den ist das eine tolle Maschine, weil sie automatisch mitschreibt.
Und wer sich nun fragt, wie eigentlich seine Blutdruckwerte sind, der sollte mal wieder einen Arzt besuchen. Ein Gesunder ist auch nur ein Kranker, der nicht ordentlich untersucht wurde.

I have been watching most of the iTunes Festival 2014 concerts in London. Kiesza was one of the artists I didn't know. Which is kind of a shame since Hideaway apparently has been in the charts for a while. It's a interesting video because it is a single take. No cuts at all. When this guy was all the rage, music videos had plenty of cuts.
Kiesza is an incredible dancer, a singer/songwriter and multiple instrumentalist. Comparing her to the young Madonna would not do her justice. Listen to What is love, originally from Haddaway.
And of course, get her iTunes Festival concert while you can. She was leading for DJ Calvin Harris. You know how to record these concerts, don't you?

My UP24 died today

And just like that, my UP24 does not talk to me anymore. No matter what I try, it will not react to button presses. Dead. Dead. Dead.
The good news is that I just discovered how accurate the Withings Health Mate app is on the iPhone. And since it's now iPhone time, I am covered. Maybe I get the chance to try the Pulse O2 or the Activité once that gets on the market. For now I am happy with the app.

iPhone 6 NFC chip is restricted to Apple Pay

Apple finally added NFC to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but if you were hoping the company’s new NFC chip will allow you to pair speakers or integrated NFC tags into your favorite apps, however you won’t be able to do any of the when the iPhone 6 launches this week because Apple’s put its NFC chip on lockdown.
In an email to Cult of Mac, an Apple spokeswoman confirmed that NFC chip on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is only for use with Apple Pay.
This is, shall I say, disappointing.

Since John Chen took over the helm at BlackBerry, they have made some good moves. Not only have they been teasing new devices to be coming to market soon. The Passport for instance promises to be way cool.
But BlackBerry has also swallowed its pride and made a deal with Amazon. With BlackBerry 10.3 they will have access to the Amazon Appstore, and they have upped their Android play to the point where you get two smartphones in one, courtesy of BlackBerry Balance:
- A potentially highly secure BlackBerry, if it need be with the latest acquisition, SecuSuite from german security company Secusmart.
- An Android phone that lets you install all those cool apps you need. Sonos never wanted to make a BlackBerry controller. But now they have. It was already in the Amazon Appstore.
This is a big deal.

Wie man sieht, liefern UP und Wittings Health Mate sehr vergleichbare Ergebnisse ab. Das UP24 hat noch ein paar Schritte registriert, die Health Mate nicht gesehen hat, weil das iPhone auf dem Tisch lag. Einfaches Fazit: wer den ganzen Tag rumsitzt und ganz bewusst läuft, der kommt auch mit Health Mate ohne zusätzlichen Schrittzähler aus. Wer dagegen den ganzen Tag rumwuselt, ohne das iPhone 5S am Körper zu tragen, der erfährt mit einem UP-Band oder einem anderen Wearable mehr.
Die Tage probiere ich das noch mal mit dem Lumia. Das war im ersten Versuch durchgefallen, hat aber mittlerweile ein Softwareupdate.
Withings

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich gefragt, welche Waage ich nehmen soll. Eher simpel oder eher mit viel Klimbim. Am Ende ist es eine WS-50 von Withings geworden. Die habe ich jetzt erst mal in Betrieb genommen und in ein paar Wochen werde ich Euch erzählen, wie zufrieden ich damit bin. Die Einrichtung und das Softwareupdate waren schon mal einfach. Und wenn sie erst mal im WLAN ist, dann schreibt sie jede Wiegung einfach in Eurer Withings-Konto, ohne dass man irgendwas machen muss. Nicht mal einschalten. Drauf stellen, ruhig stehen, dann erscheint Euer Kürzel -- bei mir VOL weil vowe ein Buchstabe zu viel ist -- und fertig. Die Waage bestimmt auch noch den Körperfettanteil, was ich für Voodoo halte, den Puls (im Stehen?) und sagt das Wetter an. Was halt so alles geht, wenn man Internet-Verbindung hat. Eine witzige Nebenfunktion: die Waage schreibt auch Temperatur und CO2-Gehalt der Luft mit. Wenn man sie im Schlafzimmer aufbaut, dann hat man eine schicke Überwachung der Raumluft.
Wenn Ihr mal irgendwo eine solche Waage seht, dann stellt Euch nicht einfach drauf. Die Waage erkennt bis zu acht Personen. Und wenn sie eine Wiegung nicht zuordnen kann, dann teilt sie das dem Besitzer mit. Der kriegt also Euer aktuelles Gewicht erzählt, ohne dass Ihr davon wisst.
Withings hat auch eine App und da wird die Geschichte fancy. Auch ohne Waage ist das nämlich ein prima Schrittzähler. Runterladen, Konto einrichten, fertig. Braucht ein iPhone 5S und neuer. Und erzählt keinen Quatsch. Die Daten von meinem UP24 und der App waren praktisch identisch. Setzt natürlich voraus, dass man das iPhone immer "am Mann" hat, aber das war bei mir heute so.
Mit meinem Gewicht war die App noch nicht zufrieden, mit meinem Aktivitätslevel sehr wohl. So weit sind wir uns einig. Um den Schlaf zu monitoren, brauche ich wohl ein Withings Activité oder Pulse. Und für das Herz kriege ich wohl nur grünes Licht, wenn ich noch meinen Blutdruck tracke. Das geht übrigens auch drahtlos, mit dem richtigen Produkt.
Ich glaube, das wird in Zukunft etwas anders laufen. UP24 oder die Waage müssen ihre Daten bei Apple Health integrieren. Und da gucke ich dann hin.
The second million is easier

The first million was the hardest. It took me more than three months from "almost unable to walk" to "hey this is fun". I was very proud to get to that million. The second million was much easier. Five days shy of only two months was enough time to complete the challenge.
The interesting statistic is "daily steps", on average, over a full month. I can now easily get over 30.000 in a single day, but I cannot always afford the time. That is the limit now. As the winter approaches, there will be even less time, since it is not much fun to walk in the dark.
I have become a big fan of walking. For me, it cures about anything.

Kraftprotz

Heute in der Post: Der tizi Kraftprotz. 10.000 mAh. Damit kann man ein iPhone 5S fünf mal aufladen. Einen Eingang hat das Gerät und zwei Ausgänge. Am linken kommt 1A raus, am rechten bis zu 2.1A. Und zwar gleichzeitig. Man kann also ein iPhone und ein iPad gleichzeitig laden, bei vollem Ladetempo. Um den Kraftprotz voll zu laden, braucht man mit einem iPhone-Ladegerät 8-10 Stunden, mit einem iPad-Lader die Hälfte. Und während der Kraftprotz lädt, gibt er nichts her. Er braucht den Ladestrom für sich selbst.
Neben dem Kraftprotz wohnt noch die Tankstelle in meiner Tasche. Die lädt vier Geräte auf einmal. Und eins davon ist nun eben der Kraftprotz. Hah, ich liebe diese Namen.
Links gibt es am Kraftprotz noch eine Taste für die Ladekontrolle. Drückt man die drei Sekunden lang, dann geht das LED an und verwandelt den Klotz in eine Taschenlampe, die bei diesem Akku wahrscheinlich bis 2025 leuchtet. ;-)
Das Finish ist nicht ganz so edel wie beim Flachmann, da aus Plastik und nicht aus Metall. Passt auch eher nicht in die Hosentasche sondern in die Manteltasche.
Vorsicht: Die englische tizi-Webseite zeigt heute noch das alte Modell, bei der deutschen stimmt's.. Aber Amazon.de hat schon das neue.

Dropbox, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that your Finder context menu should now have a "Move to Dropbox" menu item right where "Move to Trash" used to be. Not at the bottom with the other Services items, but right up top. Third item on the menu. Where my Trash muscle-memory is.
The technical term for this is "a dick move".

Shoulderpod S1

Shoulderpod S1 is a small device that I discovered at IFA. It grips your smartphone firmly and lets you mount it to your tripod. With the extension and a wrist strap attached it doubles as a grip to let you shoot steady video in landscape mode. As you see it even fits phablets like the Lumia 1520.
The solid extension is surprisingly heavy which helps getting a steady shot. The bracket itself is the most solid tripod mount I have seen to date. There is no way for the smartphone to come loose.
Since it is not spring loaded but works like a vice it applies a steady grip to the phone. Recommended, if only for the tripod mount. This is how it works:

UPdate to 14 days battery life

With the new firmware update, the battery life of UP24 will last up to 14 days. With this much time between charges, you'll have more time to achieve your fitness goals.
Matte coating coming off the Zinken

My Urbanears Zinken is about eight months old and it's showing wear. It's not as obvious as the photos suggest but the matte coating is coming off the headband. The earpieces and the hinges are ok. It's just the headband itself. Looks like a manufacturing problem. I am going to see how support will handle this and provide an update.
Update:
Urbanears Support responded within a few hours and asked for my receipt and a few other pieces of information. One they had verified this, I got my final instructions:
Thanks for the requested info. Can you please pull of the left ear cushion and give me the number/letter code that may be on a sticker on the left ear piece? Thanks.
Finally, please extend one of the ear pieces and snap off the arm. Please send me a photo that shows the headphones are totally destroyed and there is no possibility of repair or future use. Once I see the photo of the totally damaged headphones, I will place an order for your new headphones through www.urbanears.com. Thanks.
While it makes sense not to return a broken device, this hurt a little. "Kill that cat and I send you a new one."

The Zinken was replaced with a brand new one in retail packaging.
Urbanears Plattan ADV

My new favorite affordable headphones: Plattan ADV. Urbanears has redesigned their classic. It now has a washable headband like the Humlan but is way more comfortable since the headband twists. It also gained the replaceable wire from the Zinken, but with 3.5mm connectors on both ends, one straight, one angled. It has super comfortable cushions that sit on your ears.
According to the press release, Plattan ADV will be available on 18th of November for 60 €.
Apple did not disappoint

That was quite an Apple event.
- Not one but two watches. Apple designed their own band interface, so this is going to sell a lot of add ons. A year from now they will come out with a thinner version and you will look like a dork with your original watch. ;-) Prediction: this is just the beginning. It's Apple's new business beyond Mac and iDevices.

Coloud Bang

Den MD-12 links kennen wir schon. Bluetooth, NFC, Bass durch Kopplung an die Oberfläche. Der kostet bei Amazon rund 35 Euro bei einem Listenpreis von 50. Wenn man Handys für 19 Euro verkauft, dann braucht man was billigeres. So wie den Coloud Speaker rechts. 19 Euro Liste.
Das Speaker löst ein simples Problem: Die Lautsprecher im Handy sind für Teenies viel zu leise. Dazu fischt man dieses Gerät aus dem Rucksack, schaltet auf der Unterseite den Verstärker ein, wickelt das Kabel ab und steckt es in den Kopfhörerausgang. Laut. Ist der Akku leer, kann er über den MicroUSB-Anschluss geladen werden, der vom Audiostecker verdeckt wird.
Sehr clever: Der Speaker hat auch einen Audio-Ausgang. Also dort, wo der Stecker bei aufgewickeltem Kabel parkt. Man kann also mehrere hintereinander schalten. Und dabei geht dem Handy nicht die Puste aus, weil jeder Speaker ja einen eigenen Verstärker hat. Mehr laut. Wie sagt Nokia?

Marshall In-Ear Headphones

Marshall presented a new set of In-Ear headphones at IFA in Berlin. There are some neat details like the cable protection on the angled plug. This is where most earphones are likely to break. And there is a (black) switch on the cable remote control. This changes EQ settings for the headphones between heavy bass and crystal clear mids and highs. The golden button is the usual play/pause/fwd/rew button and that works on all phones. If you see volume up/down, the remote usually only works with iOS devices.
Played both house and rock music, and I love the sound. The headphones come with four different gels, I needed the second largest for a good seal. Remember to always fit your in-ear headphones for a good seal, otherwise they will not deliver.
PK K'3 Smartphone USB Key

Brought this little gem back from IFA in Berlin. It's a USB Key, 32 GB, USB 3.0. Pretty neat, right?
But wait, this is in the wrong way. The USB plug is on the outside. What's on the other side? Another USB plug, a MicroUSB plug.
It works like any other thumbdrive. Plug it into your PC or Mac and drop files on it. Plug it into your smartphone or tablet and read the files. The only requirement is that your smartphone or tablet has to support USB OTG (on the go). This is the case for most current Android devices.
Tried it on the Lumia 2520 Tablet and it would not work there. Windows Phone also fails at USB OTG.
Olloclip 4-IN-1 für Galaxy S4 und S5

Gestern auf der IFA gesehen. Olloclip hat jetzt auch eine 4-IN-1 Optik für Galaxy S4 und S5: Weitwinkel, Fisheye, und darunter zwei Macros mit 10x und 15x. Wofür braucht man die Makros? Diese Bilder habe ich mit meinem iPhone-Olloclip geschossen.
Beim Galaxy dreht man den Olloclip nicht um, sondern schiebt ihn um die Ecke, damit die andere Optik über die Kamera rutscht. Nicht so elegant, aber auch sehr clever.
Dyson 360 Eye

This is the first robot I'd actually want. It does not erratically roam the room and vacuums wherever it happens to be. Instead it systematically cleans the room, because it knows where it is, where it was, and where it needs to go. Plus, it promises to be an excellent vacuum cleaner.

Gestern gab es also den #morelumia Event von Microsoft. Ich tu mich immer noch schwer, Microsoft zu schreiben, wenn ich Nokia meine. Aber das ist ja nun nicht mehr Nokia, heißt aber noch so. Jedenfalls die neuen Smartphones.
Nun ist also die ganze Palette komplett:
- Lumia 530 und 630, reduce to the max, nicht mal ein Helligkeitssensor oder eine Frontkamera
- Lumia 730, das preisgünstigste Lumia, das alles kann. Gibt es entweder als LTE-Version (735) mit Wireless Charging, oder als HSPA-Version mit Dual SIM, aber ohne Wireless Charging. Besonderes Merkmal: 5 Megapixel-Frontkamera mit Weitwinkel und f/1.9-Optik. Sieht etwa so aus wie ein 920.
- Lumia 830, sieht aus wie ein 930, ist aber dünner. 10 MP Pureview mit optischer Bildstabilisierung. Wireless Charging mit an Bord, LTE sowieso.
- Lumia 930 und Lumia 1520. 20 MP Pureview. Technisch beinahe identisch, 1520 ist größer und kann mehr. Das eigentliche Flaggschiff, auch wenn es auf ..20 endet.
Alle Telefone bis auf das 930 haben einen SD-Slot zur Speichererweiterung. Alle außer dem 930 und 1520 brauchen sie auch, weil sie nur 8 GB internen Speicher haben, das 530 gar nur 4 GB, das 830 immerhin 16 GB. Bei allen Lumias lässt sich der rückseitige Deckel oder das Gehäuse und der Akku tausche, außer bei 930 und 1520.
Alle Lumias bekommen nach Freigabe durch die Carrier im vierten Quartal Lumia Denim. Das ist die vierte Iteration von Windows Phone 8, nach Amber, Black und Cyan. Darin enthalten sind Funktionen, die man heute in der Deveoper Preview schon sehen kann, etwa die Folder, aber vor allem neue Funktionen bei der Bildbearbeitung. Soweit ist alles ganz einfach, aber jetzt wird es kompliziert.
930 und 1520 bekommen die Fähigkeit, 4k Videos aufzuzeichnen. Die sind viermal so groß wie 1920x1080 HD, also etwa 8 MP pro Frame. Zugleich gibt es ein Update für Lumia Camera (vormals Nokia Camera), das diese 4k Videos nutzt, um sehr schnelle Serienaufnahmen zu machen. Lumia Camera ist schneller als die aktuelle Nokia Camera, wesentlich schneller. Und zwar nicht nur beim Laden, sondern auch bei der Auslösefolge. Man kann so schnell fotografieren wie man will. Lumia Camera packt die Fotos in einen Puffer und bearbeitet sie dann im Hintergrund. Das reicht für ca neun Frames in drei Sekunden. Will man noch schneller fotografieren, hält man den Finger einfach auf dem Auslöser und Nokia Camera legt keine einzelnen Bilder mit 5 MP und einem 20 Original an, sondern es schießt einfach ein 4k Video aus dem man jeden einzelnen Frame als 8 MP Foto speichern kann. Dazu gibt es die aktuell bekannten Motion oder Action Shots, die mehrere Frames zu einem Foto kombinieren. Anders als heute muss man nicht vorher wählen, sondern macht entweder eine Einzelaufnahme oder eine Serie. Diese 4k Videos nennt Microsoft "Moments". Das 830 hat keine 4K Videos, beherrscht aber ebenfalls Moments, nach einem Update auf Lumia Camera. Die einzelnen Frames sind mit 1920x1080 einfach vier mal kleiner.
Lumia Camera bekommt aber noch eine weitere Innovation: Rich Capture. Schießt man Fotos mit Blitz, speichert die Software zwei Bilder, eins mit und eins ohne Blitz. Und man kann diese beiden Fotos auf dem Smartphone über einen Slider mischen und damit den Blitz sozusagen nachträglich abschwächen von vollem Blitz bis gar kein Blitz, mit allen Zwischenschritten. Das Gleiche passiert auch bei Aufnahmen mit hohem Kontrast, für die man HDR nutzen will. Lumia Camera legt zwei unterschiedlich belichtete Frames ab, die man wieder über einen Slider miteinander mischen kann, so dass man die dunklen Bereiche nachträglich aufhellen kann.
Ich kann aktuell nicht sagen, welche Lumias diese Innovation bekommen. Sicher bin ich bei 830, 930 und 1520. Auf welche anderen Lumias das noch portiert wird, ist bisher unbekannt. Das 1020 hatte ja schon die Living Images nicht bekommen. Ich vermute, dass auch Moments und die Überblendung nicht für das 1020 erscheinen werden.
Plantronics BackBeat Pro

Plantronics hat sich bei mir beliebt gemacht über die Voyager Headsets: Pro & Legend, neuerdings Edge. Dazu habe ich das BackBeat Go und und das neuere Go 2 genutzt. Ohne Ausnahme haben alle Produkte den Editor-Refuses-To-Give-It-Back Award gewonnen. Ich sage gerne, dass ich noch nie ein schlechtes Plantronics-Produkt gesehen habe.
Nun also der BackBeat Pro. Ich habe noch keinen Kopfhörer aufgehabt, der größer ist. Ein Beats ist geradezu schlank gegen diesen Riesenoschi. Hübsch ist er nicht, aber gut. Vom Funktionsumfang her entspricht er etwa dem Nokia BH-940. Wer schon so ein Gerät hat, braucht den BackBeat Pro nicht. Während der Nokia alles selbst macht, hat der BackBeat zwei Schalter. Einer schaltet Bluetooth an und aus, der andere Noise Cancellation. Die Funktionsweise ist gleich: zwei Mikrofone nehmen den Umgebungsschall auf, die Lautsprecher liefern ein gegenphasiges Signal, so dass sich die Schallwellen gegenseitig auslöschen. Auch hier ist die Isolation perfekt. Das tiefe Brummen im Flugzeug verschwindet, wie ich gestern auf der Rückreise testen konnte.
BackBeat Pro hat aber ein paar Besonderheiten. Auf jedem Ohr gibt es einen drehbaren Ring. Rechts stellt man die Lautstärke ein, links springt man Tracks vor oder zurück. Das ist eine sehr angenehme Bedienung, speziell bei der Lautstärkeregelung. Rechts gibt es auf dem Ohr eine große Hörertaste, links Play/Pause. Die Bedienung ist absolut sicher, ohne jedes Gefummel, welche Taste man nun gerade unter dem Finger hat. In den Ohrmuscheln sitzt ein Sensor, der die Musik und die Geräuschunterdrückung anhält, wenn man das Headset vom Kopf nimmt. Setzt man ihn wieder auf, geht es weiter. Die Musik setzt dabei nicht schlagartig ein sondern wird sanft eingeblendet.
Unter der linken Muschel sitzen MicroUSB-Anschluss zum Aufladen der Akkus und ein 3.5mm-Anschluss für das mitgelieferte Audiokabel, das man nutzt, um den Kopfhörer im Flugzeug anzuschließen. Ein Ladegerät wird nicht mitgeliefert, aber das USB-Kabel. 24 Stunden soll der Akku halten, eine computergenierte Stimme gibt Auskunft über den Ladezustand und bestehende Bluetooth-Verbindungen. Wie die Voyagers kann auch das BackBeat Pro gleichzeitig mit zwei Geräten verbunden sein.
Eine clevere Besonderheit: unter der rechten Muschel gibt es eine Taste, welche die Lautstärke absenkt und die Außenmikrofone einschaltet. Damit muss man den Kopfhörer nicht absetzen, um seine Umgebung wahrzunehmen. Die Flugbegleiterin war gestern bass erstaunt, dass ich sie problemlos verstehen konnte, obwohl ich diesen Riesenoschi auf dem Kopf hatte. Bleiben zwei Fragen: wie bequem ist er und wie klingt er? Einfache Antwort: super. Habe immer noch kein schlechtes Plantronics-Produkt gesehen. ;-)
Die Größe des Kopfhörers hat naturgemäß auch einen negativen Effekt: er lässt sich nicht so leicht verstauen. Erfreulicherweise hat er kein Hardcase sondern eine gepolsterte weiche Tasche, die ihn schützt. Die Ohrmuscheln lassen sich dabei drehen, aber nicht einklappen.
Lenovo Tab S8

No, this is not a Lumia. It's the first Lenovo announcement for IFA 2014. An 8" Android 4.4 tablet with 2 GB RAM, 16 GB of storage, LTE module as an extra. Starting at 199 € in 4Q14. It's the first Intel Android from Lenovo. Like the Nexus 7 it offers a full HD display. Battery life is rated at 7 hours which I find disappointing.

Why you should not mess with your Sonos network

Yesterday, Sonos has released version 5.1 of their software. New feature: you can connect Sonos players to Wifi instead of requiring an Ethernet connection. Sounds great, doesn't it? Here is my recommendation: don't change a thing in your existing setup. Let me explain, why.
This is how your setup works. R is your router, S are your Sonos components. You connect one (or more) components to your router with an Ethernet wire. All components can talk to each other, but they don't. Why? In a mesh network, you will create loops when you forward all packets you receive. Sonos uses Spanning Tree to figure out the best path, here drawn in red, to forward packages. Everything in the cloud is SonosNet, its own private Wifi network. You need this network for 5.1 or 3.1 surround systems, since the backchannel players talk to PLAYBAR over 5 GHz SonosNet. Only PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 can do this, since PLAY:5 or the CONNECT players are 2.4 GHz only.
And no, BRIDGE was never required. You only had to have BRIDGE, if you could not connect any other Sonos component to your router. BRIDGE is a lot cheaper than a player, but you can always place a player where BRIDGE sits in your household.
With Sonos 5.1 you can now connect your players to your Wifi network. That's great for new customers who just bought their first PLAY:1. As they add another player, it just joins the Wifi network. And unless they are building a surround system, and if their home is small enough, they can continue on this path. All players must be in reach of the router Wifi signal, so their is no way to place a player in the middle between the router and a player at the far end of your house to relay the signal.
Sonos' narrative is that you no longer need the bridge. You can read this in many reviews. But that's nonsense. You never needed it in the first place. What you did need is the wired connection between router and SonosNet.
Now that you know that BRIDGE is just another node on SonosNet, you can also understand what Sonos will be offering with BOOST. It's a second generation bridge with far better wireless performance. It's designed to replace BRIDGE and it can be used to extend the reach of SonosNet. It won't help you at all in a Wifi setup.

Connect SONOS to WiFi

This is a Sonos Bridge, an access point for SonosNet. If you were unable to plug a Sonos player into your router, you needed this. Today, Sonos is going to drop this requirement and let you connect Sonos players to your existing WiFi.
When Sonos was designed we had 802.11b WiFi with 11 Mbit. Then WiFi went up to 54, 150, 300 Mbit. Now we are getting to Gigabit WiFi. This technology has evolved to a point where a wire is no longer required.
For existing customers, there is no need to change your setup. But if you want to buy a new Sonos, you can now just get a single player and you are good to go.
My setup is way too elaborate to work in this WiFi setup. Therefore I did not participate in the beta. What I learned today from Sonos' blogpost is that you can run either in WiFi or in SonosNet mode. SonosNet is required for 3.1 or 5.1 setups. And since SonosNet is a mesh network where one speaker can connect to any other speaker, SonosNet spans wider areas.

Ello to get comments, faves and reposts

Ello will get comments in the next few days, quickly followed by faves and then reposts. The only thing missing then will be a notification center. Currently you can only see mentions in your inbox. So far Ello is a very friendly place with lots of interesting posts, mostly in English.
There are no apps with the exception of a web view for Android. On iOS and Windows Phone, you just add a bookmark to your start screen. Note that you have to swipe left and right to get to all three panels. For now Ello is working on the desktop view to iron out the bugs and add functionality. A really great feature that is not so obvious is the excellent photo quality.
Ello has just sent out the first invitations from their wait list. I have a few left, if you need one.
More steps, more sleep

At the end of July I thought I would never be able to get better results, but I was wrong. In August my sleep improved and I was able to walk a lot more steps. More active time, more calories burned. For September I may need to work on the food intake. ;-)
