Public service announcement

by Volker Weber

After reading this week's c't about the gaping holes in Internet Explorer that have not been fixed by Microsoft, I decided to do something. You just can't turn away and let this happen. So if you are still using Internet Explorer with Active Scripting turned on, you will get this message at the top of the weblog:

unsafetn.gif

Of course, if you turn Active Scripting off, most websites will break for you. So your data may be safe but Internet Explorer will render itself useless on most sites.

There is an alternative: Install Mozilla and experience for yourself how much better it is. You actually cannot uninstall Internet Explorer and you don't even want to bother. Just let it sit there and ignore it. It won't do any harm if you are not surfing the web with it. If you ever run into a site you absolutely trust and that won't work with Mozilla you can still fall back to Internet Exploder .

Download Mozilla now >

Attention web masters: This is the code you want to steal for your website. Place it anywhere you like to see this message:

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Explorer") != -1){document.write( 'It looks like you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer with Active Scripting turned on. This is very dangerous and irresponsible. For your own safety and the safety of your data please turn off Active Scripting or better yet use a different browser. You can download one <a href="http://www.mozilla.org" target="_blank">here</a>.' );} //--> </script>

Die Story: Operation Blindflug

by Volker Weber

Montag, 22.30 Uhr, WDR

September 2001.

What is Stop Energy?

by Volker Weber

I have been looking for something like this definition for a long time. Dave Winer explains it very well.

Suppose someone, call him Mr. A, has an idea that he believes is ready to deploy, or is requesting comments as he is getting ready to deploy. So he posts an RFC, usually on a mail list or a website, in the hope that people will spot a problem and help him figure out a solution; or find no problems and co-develop an implementation, or develop a compatible implementation. In theory, the Internet is a collegial environment, with lots of people who want to do new stuff, where one should expect to get this kind of help.

In this scenario, A is a proponent of Forward Motion. In all likelihood, instead of getting help, A will encounter Stop Energy, reasons why he can't or shouldn't be allowed to do what he proposes.

Stop Energy is not reasoned, it never takes into account the big picture, it is the mirror image of Forward Motion. In the Stop Energy model, everyone, no matter how small their stake in a technology, has the power to veto. Nothing ever gets done, and people who want to move forward are frustrated in every attempt to move. Unfortunately, Stop Energy is the rule, not the exception.

I have been conducting a long term study on this phenomenon. Although the results are somewhat heartbreaking there is a funny moment in them. Most creators of stop energy are completely unable to understand that they themselves are the very source of the problem.

There is also one proven solution. Just do it. Do the right thing. Don't ask for permission. Ask for forgiveness. If that is not granted move on. Don't stay with the doomed.

Microsoft OneNote

by Volker Weber

Steve Gillmor makes an interesting case why Microsoft's new note-taking application OneNote might become the center of the office software universe. Although I like many of the ideas behind the project, I have two problems:

- I am not going to sink my data into a Microsoft only data store. Otherwise I might as well keep it in PowerPoint files or Access databases.

- Steve Gillmor is never in doubt, but often wrong. I would not go as far as "always wrong", but "most of the times".

Elements vs Attributes

by Volker Weber

Mike Golding is puzzled by the same question as many other application designers:

There is something empowering about building your own XML data formats, it's like you are building something that is meaningful, something that others might one day have to learn. If you believe that then there is a responsibility to get it right, but what is right when it comes to formatting and constructing your XML? One of the big questions is elements or attributes?

Fixing the Domino CheckBox Bug

by Volker Weber

Jake Howlett hits the spot with this piece of advice for Domino developers:

The fact that Domino has a bug shouldn't really come as a shock to any of us. Any software application of that size is bound to have one or two. What is shocking is that Domino R5 has a bug that shows no sign of being fixed despite even though it's been officially documented. This article will discuss the bug and a simple solution. On the way I hope to introduce you to a few new concepts and to a way to "debug" Domino forms.

Cthulhu Lives!

ECDetail.JPG

From the Too Much Time on My Hand department:

Built for a game of Cthulhu Lives! that has yet to be played, this piece was inspired by the retro-futuristic machines in the movie Brazil by Terry Gilliam. It was one of the most difficult and time-consuming pieces I've ever attempted.

Despite the ridiculous amount of abuse I subjected it to, and despite the fact that all its components are now exposed to the air, the 1988 Macintosh SE which forms the heart of this piece still works just fine.

A syntax color highlighting editor for Eclipse

by Volker Weber

For those file types that are not yet supported by their own special editor in Eclipse:

ColorEditor uses JEdit's syntax highlighting mode files. This is a beta release since a few things don't work. The biggest issue that doesn't currently work is supporting a partition that contains another partition(s). JEdit uses this "span within a span" idea in a lot of places but as far as I can tell it will take a good bit of work to support overlapping partitions in Eclipse.

The plugin currently supports highlighting for around 74 different file types.

Color editor is open source and free.

What is 'spaces'?

by Volker Weber

mail-small.jpgWhat? Another Email/PIM software?

Short answer: No.

Long(er) answer: spaces is qualitatively different. It shares many features with standard email/PIM software like Evolution or Outlook. However, its abstractions over information management are designed to simplify organization and access to information and for collaboration from the ground up. Along with the simplicity of its user interface, these elements will not only make spaces a better PIM, they will also allow it to be an ideal tool for collaboration between individuals and small groups. Spaces runs on any platform that supports Java 2 (version 1.4 and above), which includes Macintosh, Windows, Linux, Solaris, and other UNIX variants.

Spaces is a tool that for the first time will integrate seamlessly all information management tasks for individuals and small groups under a single, easy-to-use interface. Using self-organizing P2P technologies, there will be no need for servers. Having designed the interface for collaboration from the ground up, there will be no need for five different programs that always do things differently and need a subpoena to talk to each other. The FAQ contains more information on what features are available now and the schedule for additional features.

Some of the components of spaces will be released as open-source. The product will be free for individuals and non-commercial institutions, and its continued development will be supported by individual donations and licenses from commercial institutions and anyone else who believes in a world where monopolies won't control our lives (and is willing to give something to prove it :-))...

Von Oberpfaffenhofen zum Mond

by Volker Weber

by Volker Weber

Man könnte einwenden...

[Danke, Stefan]

Groove Web Services

by Volker Weber

Groove Networks has published WSDL files for Groove Web Services:

Groove 2.5 software introduces Groove Web Services, an open and extensible web services API that provides web services from a desktop. Groove Web Services provide programmatic access to Groove tools and objects through SOAP interfaces, available for Groove Workspace's most popular components, including Files, Discussion, Calendar, Contacts, Members, and Awareness. Further, Groove Web Services infrastructure supports 3rd party developers' ability to expose their custom Groove tools as web services.

Using Groove Web Services, Groove data and functionality can be integrated with, and embedded within, other applications, regardless of whether those applications reside locally on the same device as Groove Workspace or remotely on some other network-connected device.

The bad news is: No security.

George: Condi! Nice to see you. What's happening?
Condi: Sir, I have the report here about the new leader of China.
George: Great. Lay it on me.
Condi: Hu is the new leader of China.
George: That's what I want to know.
Condi: That's what I'm telling you.
George: That's what I'm asking you. Who is the new leader of China?
Condi: Yes.
George: I mean the fellow's name.
Condi: Hu.
George: The guy in China.
Condi: Hu.
George: The new leader of China.
Condi: Hu.
George: The Chinaman!
Condi: Hu is leading China.
George: Now whaddya' asking me for?
Condi: I'm telling you Hu is leading China.
George: Well, I'm asking you. Who is leading China?
Condi: That's the man's name.
George: That's who's name?
Condi: Yes.
George: Will you or will you not tell me the name of the new leader of China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir? Yassir Arafat is in China? I thought he was in the Middle East.
Condi: That's correct.
George: Then who is in China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir is in China?
Condi: No, sir.
George: Then who is?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir?
Condi: No, sir.
George: Look, Condi. I need to know the name of the new leader of China. Get me the Secretary General of the U.N. on the phone.
Condi: Kofi?
George: No, thanks.
Condi: You want Kofi?
George: No.
Condi: You don't want Kofi.
George: No. But now that you mention it, I could use a glass of milk. And then get me the U.N.
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Not Yassir! The guy at the U.N.
Condi: Kofi?
George: Milk! Will you please make the call?
Condi: And call who?
George: Who is the guy at the U.N?
Condi: Hu is the guy in China.
George: Will you stay out of China?!
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: And stay out of the Middle East! Just get me the guy at the U..N.
Condi: Kofi.
George: All right! With cream and two sugars. Now get on the phone.
(Condi picks up the phone.)
Condi: Rice, here.
George: Rice? Good idea. And a couple of egg rolls, too. Maybe we should send some to the guy in China. And the Middle East. Can you get Chinese food in the Middle East?

AlphaWorks: Web Performance Tools

by Volker Weber

This looks very promising. Note to self: Check it out soon !

What is Web Performance Tools?

Web Performance Tools is a set of applications that allow stress-testing of a Web server, a Web site, and/or a Web application. The two current applications are stress and record.

How does it work?

Stress is a high-performance, simple, threaded HTTP engine that is capable of simulating hundreds or even thousands of HTTP clients, using a highly configurable set of directives in a human-readable and easily modified configuration file. Record is a simple eavesdropping proxy that will record a user's session against a Web server for later playback in stress.

When the two applications are combined, a stress configuration can be easily and quickly built that, with minor tuning, allows evaluation of the usability of a server, site, or Web application.

Open source is a wonderful thing

by Volker Weber

Why? Because you can fix things.

I was setting up a Jabber server yesterday. Ran into numerous Dibertesque roadblocks. Stupid policies that prevented everyone from doing the right thing. Get a mnemonic alias for an unwieldy hostname. Nope, can't do that. Get a subdomain on a hostname. Nope, that is not possible. A-ha.

So, in the end I had to create an island that does not talk to other servers. Not the right thing to do, but still works OK. Sort of.

I was hitting another road block. There was no way to search the JUD (Jabber user directory) using wildcards. It turned out to be a limitation of jud_search.c which simply does not check for wildcards. That makes sense if you have hundreds of thousand of users on a server. But not for me since I am only expecting hundreds or thousands.

So, I ended up fixing the source with this patch, recompiled in a breeze, restarted the server, and everyone is a happy camper.

by Volker Weber

Good programming practices

by Volker Weber

Krzysztof Kowalczyk has a wonderful list of good programming practices. I keep mumling to myself " yes, yes, yes, maybe, yes, yes ...":

- Continuous releases and daily builds. - Rather than put a bug in the bug database, first try to fix it. Don't code first and ask QA to find bugs. - The engineer who wrote the code is mostly responsible for QA. - No code is finished until the unit test is finished. - Good design results from getting something going quickly, followed by lots of quick iteration. - The best architectures evolve for a long time. - Code reviews are a regular part of development. - Difficult parts of code are best done by a team of two people working closely together.

KM Europe 2002

by Volker Weber

If you have not visited vowe's choice — formerly part of vowe.de — in a while, you may want to check it out again. I found an interesting way to utilize Movable Type for a categorized and alphabetically organized site, that is not a weblog, apart from the last three entries posted to the main page. vowe's choice is now a subsite of vowe dot net and shares a very similar layout.

Another one bites the dust

by Volker Weber

DieZeitRedesign.GIF

Setzen! Sechs!

Spam is getting worse every day

by Volker Weber

spam.JPG

I think the noise level in my main inbox is now higher than 50%. Thanks to SpamPal I do not even see most of it. It tags the unsolicited mail and a server rule in my Domino server dumps the junk into a special mailbox. Once a week I clean that out.

Currently I have four mailboxes. The main inbox, one for press releases, one for mailing lists and one for spam. Vendors, if you force me to register my mail address I will give you junkmail@vowe.net and I can guarantee that no one is ever going to read the valuable information you send there. If you send unsolicited bulk press releases to my main inbox they also get filtered. If you think you are fighting spam by including fake mail adresses in the following fashion, then you know a lot less about mail, dns and programming than you think you do:

But don't give up. If you want to reach me, send an e-mail. It is still your best choice if you don't use Groove. Use your full name as the originator, avoid all caps, use a meaningful subject. I will read this.

Alltags-Spam

by Volker Weber

Patterns: A Portal composite pattern Using WebSphere Portal V4.1.2

by

IBM has published a new Redbook, touching on patterns to be used with WebSphere Portal:

The Patterns for e-business are a group of proven, reusable assets that can speed the process of developing applications. The Portal composite pattern combines Business and Integration patterns to help implement a portal solution. This redbook provides a technical scenario and guidelines for the Portal composite pattern. It shows how the Composite pattern works and documents the tasks required to build a technical scenario of it.

Part 1 of the redbook guides you through the process of choosing the Business and Integration patterns of the Composite pattern and then drill down to the Application and Runtime pattern and Product mapping to deliver the desired functionality of the Portal composite pattern.

Part 2 provides a set of guidelines for building your portal application and includes a discussion of application design, application development and systems management.

Part 3 demostrates how to implement a portal solution thru a technical scenario. This technical scenario uses the WebSphere Portal Extend offering.

Groove about to raise price of their Professional offering

by Volker Weber

I hope that I am reading this correctly into their newsletter:

What's more, when you upgrade to the current version of Groove Workspace Professional Edition v2.1, you'll get a FREE UPDATE to the upcoming release, Professional Edition v2.5 (a $105 value), when it becomes available. You'll be saving $50, while getting all the value from additional capabilities in v2.5...

Currently you pay $49 for the standard and $99 for the professional version. The upgrade form one to the other is $55. Assuming that the 2.5 update will free for licensed customers, one has to assume that after 2.5 comes out, the professional version will be $149 because the upgrade will be a "$105 value".

Clear message from Groove Networks: If you want to upgrade, do it now. I am very curious what the response from The Customer will be.

What sank Sendo's Stinker?

by Volker Weber

Stinker is a nickname for Microsoft's Stinger mobile phone platform. Sendo should know why ... The Register is running this analysis:

After you shake hands with Microsoft, goes the saying, count your fingers. Sendo's decision to abandon Microsoft's cellphone platform for the emerging Nokia standard, Series 60, gives the British company a new lease of life. But it's a crushing blow to Microsoft, which needed every OEM it could find for its Smartphone 2002 platform, and must now go it alone with an unproven and risky manufacturing model.

You never want to say never with Microsoft - the company has $40 billion in the bank and determination to succeed - but it has a mountain to climb if it's to restore its credibility. For four years the company has been talking about its cellphone plans, promising that its value proposition (commoditized hardware, enterprise connectivity) would prove irresistible, but it's largely friendless and getting lonelier by the day.

The most obvious option - the acquisition of a proven smartphone operating system and hardware design team - doesn't exist. There's only one candidate, SymbianOS, and that's not for sale.

Offen wie ein Scheunentor

by Volker Weber

An prominenterer Stelle.

Xandros - Linux For The Masses

by Volker Weber

Beyond Unreal has a six-page review of Xandros

I'm one of the many people in the world who have been looking - hard - at finding an alternative to Windows. Since I have a substantial investment in hardware here already, the Mac osX wasn't an option. Standard Linux distributions, while having come a long way in useability and reliability, still require a substantial amount of expertise, especially when it comes to integrating them in a Windows environment, installing drivers, etc. Certainly, successfully installing and running existing Linux distributions is beyond the scope of the average Windows user.

Along comes Xandros 1.0.

Extending Groove

by Markus Nolte

The ever excellent Jon Udell has this story about extending Groove:

How do you port 5 million lines of Win32/COM code to the Pocket PC? That was the dilemma that Groove Networks faced when considering how to bring its ultrasecure peer collaboration technology to mobile devices. Jamming 10 pounds of potatoes into a one-pound sack wasn't an option, but lateral thinking yielded a new plan: Don't port; use Web services as integration glue. Thus was born the skunkworks project first dubbed "edge services" and now known as GWS (Groove Web Services).

Switched site search from Atomz to Google

by Volker Weber

I have been using Atomz as my site search for two years now and I have always been very satisfied. But for more than a year my site has outgrown the number of pages that Atomz will spider for free. I went from monthly archives to individual archives so that every single post can be found on its own page. That way my site has grown from about 40 to more than 1500 pages, and keeps on growing every single day.

I played with MT Search for a few minutes. But it is way to slow and will also not search my static pages.

Since most of my referrers come from Google anyway, I decided to switch the site search to Google as well. If you enter something in the search box to your right and hit enter (or click the button) we will briefly take you to Google, which returns a list of all the individual pages that contain your search string items. If you hit one of those links you are back here.

Try it out.

I beg to differ

by Volker Weber

Someone said, Microsoft lost all the battles, but won the war. That could not be further from the truth. The war isn't over. Microsoft is still at war with the world. Bill does not want to be number one. He wants to be the only one. And he is not winning that war.

I don't care whether Microsoft won at a court. They won't be defeated there. They will be defeated by their only possible supporters, the people they are at war with: Their customers. Microsoft has made a ton of money. And they need more. Where could they get that from?

I am a happy Windows 2000 user. I like it a lot. Runs almost without problems here every day on three of my machines. But three machines are already converted to Linux. And this website runs on Linux. And my Jabber server. Most of the stuff that I use every day does not depend on Windows. Lotus Domino, or Mozilla, they run on different platforms. Movable Type, or MRTG, they need just Perl. ZOE and WebSphere run on Java. I have three Microsoft Office 2000 licenses, but I hardly use 5% of Word,2% of Excel and 1% of Powerpoint. That can be done with OpenOffice. Then there is Lotus Notes and Groove. They both depend on Windows. Notes also does Mac OS, which I don't have. Will Notes lock me into Windows? You bet, it will not. Groove? Nope.

There was a time when Microsoft simply built better products than the competition. And the world beat a path to their door. Now this door is locked, so that customers can't get out. Embrace and extend. They tried that with Java and failed. Now they try again with C# and will win new souls, no doubt about it. I know it is hard to grow when you already exterminated the competition. You can send the BSA, you can audit licenses. You can make sure that nobody leaves through the door. You can try to lock them all in.

But the world no longer beats a path to your door.

I have not switched to Windows XP, or Office XP, or an Xbox, a 'Windows' Phone, a 'Windows' PDA. Most of the people or enterprises I know have not. So what is next? I guess, the freedom to innovate. Let freedom ring.

Autofahren macht Spaß. Essen auch. Am meisten Spaß macht Essen im Auto!

by Oliver Tunnat

Sounds like Schellackplatte.

Deutlicher jedoch erklingt nun:
"Was dazu?"
"Doch, ja. Ich hätte gerne diese gesalzenen fritierten Kartoffelstäbchen."
"Also Pommes?"
"Von mir aus auch die."
"Groß, mittel, klein?"
"Gemischt.

Also: Machen wir weiter?"

Site Redesign Day

Today seems to be Site Redesign Day. I relaunched my Quickplace with the new version 3.0. Boy, is this faster now. Besides the fact that it now looks a lot more business-like -- no more burning trashcans and flying papers -- there are enhancements everywhere. You can now download source files that have been published as HTML, for instance PowerPoint files. The new design does away with most of the images, and it loads a lot faster now. Very nice.

There are also a few minor changes to this humble weblog. The title now is a permalink to the individual entry. The author moved to a line directly under the title and the time is gone for good. The comments link looks more natural now.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Microsoft's Weblog Software

msblog.jpgPicture the following scenario: Microsoft has created a weblog tool that is designed to run inside the firewall at a company. It's browser-accessible from any 4.0 or higher web browser and doesn't require Windows on the client. It leverages their strengths by integrating with Office, and there's no per-user client access fee. Then imagine if this weblogging tool were deployed to millions of users, all before anyone in the weblog community took notice.

That scenario is real.
