Pebble Black Steel

Als Pebble die Edelstahl-Version der Smartwatch rausbrachte, waren alle Reviewer voll des Lobes. Mir gefiel sie auf den Bildern nicht. Viel zu klotzig und roh. Sah jedenfalls nicht nach $250 aus. Nun habe ich seit zwei Tagen ein schwarzes Modell, und ich finde sie besser als auf den Bildern. Das liegt auch daran, dass sie kleiner als das Original ist.
Die Uhr wird mit einem Lederband geliefert, das sich gegen ein Stahlband tauschen lässt. Leider ist der Anschluss proprietär, so dass nur Pebble-Bänder passen. Der Wechsel ist einfach, wenn man einen kleinen Schraubenzieher hat. Die Länge des Bandes anzupassen, erfordert dafür viel Geschick, wenn man das Band nicht verkratzen will. Das schwarze Band wurde erst montiert und dann behandelt, so dass die Keile, die die Glieder des Bandes zusammenhalten, nur sehr schwer zu entfernen sind.
Die Steel hat einen anderen Anschluss als das Original. Die Knöpfe sind sehr scharfkantig. Das Display ist nun aus Gorilla Glas, das macht die Uhr weniger kratzanfällig. Was micht stört, ist die erhabene Einfassung. An dieser Kante sammeln sich ständig kleinste Hautschuppen. Die habe ich für das nächste Bild einmal nicht entfernt.
Ich muss mein Urteil revidieren: in schwarz und mit Metallband finde ich die Steel besser als das Original.

Microsoft Office for iPad leaves me impressed and somewhat confused

Very impressive presentation by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and General Manager Julia White. And quite an image overhaul from the Ballmer days. Here are my take-aways:
- Microsoft is dead serious to bring Office to all devices and platforms. This includes Windows and Mac, iPhones and iPads, and Android. Office Mobile is now free for iPhone and Android Phones and comes preinstalled on Windows Phone. "All" does not appear to include BlackBerry.
- Office for iPad is very impressive. It's a free download, but without Office 365 subscription, it can only be used to read or present. OneNote also got an update today to bring it up to the same design. Again, very nice addition.
- I will reserve judgement until next week's Build conference, but Office for Windows currently looks like a dead duck on touch devices. I just hope for Microsoft, that they have Metro apps up their sleeves to be introduced next week.
- I have an enterprise angle on everything I see. So Active Directory on Azure was more important to me than Office on iPad.
- And on the same agenda, I am still a bit confused on how Microsoft is improving Intune to support their announcement of an Enterprise Mobility Suite.
In the enterprise however, using iWork is a PITA. You have document conversions, which never really work. Having native Office apps on iPad hopefully takes a lot of those headaches away. But Office 365 cannot possibly be the only way to license these apps. Many enterprises use different licensing schemes today.
What I cannot get over is the striking difference between the iPad apps and what Microsoft has done for Surface so far. Worlds apart.
Twitter rolls out photo tagging

You can now be tagged in photos. Unless you go to settings and opt out. Twitter assumes you are OK with being tagged and has enabled the feature for everybody.

Gorillas

I was wondering why the Lumia 1520 developed more scratches on the display than the 1020 and did some research. As it turns out, Nokia is using Gorilla Glass 3, the much stronger material on the 1020, but not the 1520. Gorilla Glass 2 is just 20% thinner than Gorilla Glass, but has the same properties.
While I was at it, I also wrote down a few more parameters, and I hope I got them all right. Gorilla Glass on iPhone is always disputed, since Corning does not list Apple as a customer, nor does Apple list any suppliers. But it is agreed that Corning's 2006 development of Gorilla Glass made the iPhone possible in 2007.
In any case, we have come a long way in pixel density (PPI = Pixels per Inch) and screen sizes.

Here are three things that make it so hard for me to use a different phone:
- The Lumia sits on a wireless charger. There is no cable to disconnect. When I grab it, it's fully charged. Always.
- It tells me the time. Even when it is sleeping. I don't need to turn it on. Just a glance.
- It tells me what is going on. One email, one Twitter alert, one Instagram alert. Again, no need to touch it, no need to pick it up.

On smartphones, smart watches and smart glasses

I have been thinking. And I am not finished. So it's going to be a long text.
We live in a world of fascinating technology. We make things that are better than last year's things. And we constantly invent new things. Phones are now cameras. And the real cameras suddenly lack features we take for granted on phones, like geotagging or instant sharing. Phones have become full Internet terminals. And they have become agents of ourselves, that we communicate through, be it in voice, text, photo, video. They have become our companions. They have become sensors of our surroundings, they can tell if and when we move, where, and if we move enough.
Smartphones are a tremendous success, and it all started with the iPhone. Americans are still in love with it, and it holds a large market share. In other countries we have seen even bigger success with Android phones. We have not found out yet, what the perfect size for our companion is. Bigger screens are better, bigger touch faces however don't work with one hand, or better, they don't work with the opposing thumb on the one hand you are holding it with. And as those screens get bigger, the phones become bigger and hunger for more energy, which makes the battery larger. And suddenly we have tablets, and phablets, and do we still need a computer?
The thing is, your smartphone is pretty good. And next year's smartphone will only be a little bit better. And everything we have invented in terms of wearables only augments this smartphone. You put a screen on your wrist or in your face, but you are doing exactly the same things you did before. You put a sensor band on your wrist, but it does not really do more than your smartphone could do, if it was on you all the time.
We have become so attached to our smartphones — remember, they are our agents that we communicate through — that we are getting second thoughts. Are we looking too much at these things, becoming oblivious of our surroundings? This is where the smart watch or the smart glasses come to play. See, I am no longer pulling out my smartphones every two minutes — I am just checking my watch. How does that work for you, if a person looks at their watch every two minutes instead of their phone? Not at all, right? Checking your watch is a clear signal that you want to get away. How does it work for you, if a person looks away and at a screen on their glasses?
I believe we don't need more stuff that needs to be kept alive by charging it once a day. I believe we no longer need dedicated wristwatches, because we know the time. We look at our smartphones every two minutes. And chances are, if we don't, there is plenty of cues around us telling us the time.
Are we done innovating? Absolutely not. But it is going to take a huge innovation to make a better computer than the one you are holding in your hand while reading this. Chances are, you are looking at something that has a keyboard attached. If we want to leave that keyboard behind and wear this computer on our body, those computers need to understand your voice and your intentions. So they do what you want, and not what you say.
As somebody with an abundance of things I can assure you, you want as few of these as possible. Use that one smartphone you have, make it as rugged as possible, so you can go about your life without too much care for it. And if you break it, get a new one. But only if.

Almost all of my Evernote notes are text. So I just needed a simple tool and Evernote2Onenote fits the bill. Runs on Windows, needs both Evernote and Onenote installed, plus the .Net framework. Once started it was finished in a minute.

Ich wundere mich immer, wenn Leute über die IBANs jammern. So schwer einzugeben. Dabei ist das ganz einfach. Man muss sich nur einen Rhythmus angewöhnen. Beispiel:

Oben die IBAN, darunter die Kontonummer und die Bankleitzahl. Die IBAN ist einfach die Kette aus BLZ und KTO, davor DE und eine Prüfziffer.

Ich nehme also hier die DE17 und dahinter exakt die gleichen Zahlen wie zuvor. Man muss nur einmal den Rhythmus 3-3-2-3-3-4 lernen und mit einem Bleistift ein paar Punkte machen.
Tablets at vowe's magic flying circus

I am currently using four (4) tablets. And I like them all.
- Microsoft Surface RT. This is the only tablet that is on 24 hours a day? Why? It sits on our table and displays photos uploaded to SkyDrive. This used to be a feature on iPad (with photostream), but that went away with iOS 7. Since the Surface sits to comfortably on the table, it's the goto device for all Internet lookups, photo viewing, news browsing etc. Big benefit: this device looks really nice and with its kickstand does not need a a separate stand.
- Nokia Lumia 2520. This the Surface RT on steroids. Much faster, with LTE connection, much better cameras and screen. Although it runs the same software as the Surface, it blows it away in every respect. The comparison is a bit unfair, since Microsoft now has Surface 2, but I lack experience with the new model. If both had the same capabilities, Surface would win because of the kickstand, and the 2520 would win because it holds much nicer in your hand. As it is today, the 2520 wins big time because of LTE connectivity and a screen you can read outside. In the end, the Surface stays at home, the 2520 travels.
- Lenovo Yoga Tablet 8". This is the Android device of choice for me, simply because of the very functional design. It's light, nimble, beautiful and runs forever on battery. It controls my Sonos, I check and archive my mail, look at my Twitter and Instagram feeds. The design lends itself to holding the tablet with one hand. Almost every single day it is the first and the last machine I touch.
- Apple iPad Air. This is the machine I work with. Microsoft claims you need a Windows machine like the Surface, but since I am a Mac user, iPad fits the bill much better. I create presentations in Keynote on the Mac and they simply appear through iCloud on the iPad. I can edit presentations there and the changes flow back to the Mac. I write manuscripts with iA Writer, and again, they flow from one Mac to the other and the iPad. It happens in real time. I can just put down one device and walk over to the other and continue.

Jede Festplatte stirbt. Und Du musst Dir jetzt Gedanken machen, was danach passiert. Wo ist die Kopie? Wo ist die Kopie von der Kopie? Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, das zu planen. Entscheidend ist, das man das plant und dann auch handelt.
Vielleicht ist es ja doch nicht so dumm, alle Fotos und Videos automatisch in einen Cloud-Account zu laden.
Update: Und wo wir es gerade von sterbenden Festplatten haben. Bei mir ist soeben die nächste Seagate verreckt. Neue Platte ist drin und wird synchronisiert. Wenn in den nächsten zehn Stunden nicht noch eine stirbt, muss ich nicht das Backup bemühen.
Und nein, Seagate kommt mir nicht mehr ins Haus. Man sieht schon die ersten WDC. Die sterben auch, aber weitem nicht so schnell.

Im Original heißt das 'Thomas liked your post' und passt in eine Zeile. Man könnte natürlich auch schreiben 'Thomas mag Deinen Beitrag'. Da 'liked' in der Vergangenheit liegt, wäre 'mochte' vielleicht besser, aber impliziert, dass er es jetzt möglicherweise nicht mehr tut. Und so nimmt man die komplizierteste Phrase.
Da ich Englisch verstehe, ist das für mich einfach zu lösen.

Microsoft is making OneNote free for everyone. Excellent move. I am more than willing to switch from Evernote. But I can't. Microsoft forgot to include a migration path. They could have provided a way to read the .enex files that Evernote exports, they could have transferred data from Evernote.com to Office.com. But they haven't.
Am I missing something? Is Microsoft not interested in Evernote users? Is their plan to get users who never used a note taking service before? I don't get it.

Music Drop

How cool is that? A web server running on your phone which lets you upload music from a web browser. Music Drop is an app that displays an IP address. Copy that address into your browser on the PC or Mac and it displays this page. On the right side you see the music which is available on the phone; press the play button and the phone plays the track. Drop new files on the left side and they get copied to the phone. Bang.
This is currently the quickest way to add new tracks to my Lumia 1020.
OneNote for Mac free in the app store

OneNote is now free in the app store. Now I have this on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Lumia, Surface, Yoga. It may be time to ditch Evernote. My subscription is running out next week.
And it's free on Windows as well! Now all we need is an .enex importer for those Evernote notes. Microsoft did not expect that we ever used a note taker before, or did they?

Nokia hat ein wunderbares Leseprogramm für Bücher im Epub Format. Leider wurde es am 13.12.2012 zum letzten Mal aktualisiert. Und so kommt es, dass beim bestens zum Lesen geeigneten Lumia 1520 folgende Meldung erscheint:
Ihr Handy erfüllt nicht die Mindestanforderungen, die zum Ausführen dieser Anwendung erforderlich sind.
Es ist natürlich umgekehrt. Niemand hat sich die Mühe gemacht, das Programm an die höhere Bildschirmauflösung anzupassen oder es auch nur als installierbar zu markieren. Ich schaffe es auch nicht, irgendwelche Informationen von Nokia zu bekommen, was denn nun mit Nokia Reading passieren wird.
Und auf dem Lumia 2520? Auch nichts von Microsoft oder Nokia. Apple-Nutzer haben iBooks. Und das fehlt hier ganz bitter.

De-Mail kostenlos

GMX und WEB.DE, die beiden führenden deutschen E-Mail-Anbieter, geben zum Start der CeBIT ein deutlich verbessertes Tarif-Angebot für De-Mail bekannt. Mit der integrierten De-Mail Flatrate können Kunden von WEB.DE und GMX die rechtssichere De-Mail ab sofort kostenlos nutzen und eine unbegrenzte Anzahl von De-Mails versenden und empfangen.
Stell Dir vor, es ist De-Mail und keiner geht hin. Dabei war das doch so ein schönes Geschäftsmodell. Endlich Porto auf Email. Nun steht die Infrastruktur, aber keiner nutzt sie. Man hat zwar 500.000 Privatnutzern eine Adresse aufgeschwatzt, aber nutzen will die niemand.
Nun also kostenlos. Das muss doch gehen. Dumm nur, dass richtige Email, also solche, mit der man weltweit jeden erreichen kann, auch kostenlos ist. Mit De-Mail geht das nicht. Da erreicht man nur die anderen De-Mailer, die auch nicht wollen. Ich stelle mir gerade vor, man hätte einfach Lotus Notes genommen, jedermann eine ID verpasst aber keine SMTP-Verbindung. Also so wie vor 20 Jahren.
Der Bürger, der sich so eine De-Mail-Adresse "sichert", halst sich zusätzliche Verpflichtungen auf. Was in seinem Postkorb landet, gilt als zugestellt. Und was in seinem Namen verschickt wird, kann er nicht abstreiten. Es geht nicht um sichere Kommunikation, auch wenn das immer drauf steht. Es geht darum, elektronische Einschreiben mit Rückschein zu etablieren. Zahlen sollen das die Unternehmen und öffentlichen Verwaltungen. Und das würden sie gerne auch. Wenn nur der Bürger den Braten nicht längst gerochen hätte.
Ginge es um sichere Kommunikation, dann könnte man jedem Bürger eine qualifizierte Signatur (QES) auf den Personalausweis (nPA) liefern. Und mit der könnte er sicher verschlüsseln und gegebenenfalls auch wirksame Willenserklärungen unterschreiben, ohne zusätzliches Postfach. Das Signaturgesetz gibt es schon lange, und der nPA kann das auch. Starke Verschlüsselung ist einfach nicht erwünscht. Und drum kann der Server bei De-Mail auch alles lesen, was da so durchläuft.

Guter Scoop von Thomas Cloer. Das Mutterschiff bestätigt nur, dass eine neue Office-Version in Arbeit ist, nennt aber noch keine Termine.

Microsoft hat heute eine Tastatur mit Zusatzakku für das Surface vorgestellt. Und das trägt ähnlich auf, wie das Keyboard des Lumia 2520.
Surface 2 = 675 g
Power Cover = 535 g
Systemgewicht = 1210 g
Lumia 2520 = 615 g
Power Keyboard = 571 g
Systemgewicht = 1186 g
Die sind also durchaus vergleichbar. Beim Surface kann man allerdings auch eine Tastatur ohne Zusatzakku haben, ohne auf etwas zu verzichten. Beim Lumia dagegen sind die normalen USB-Ports im Power Keyboard. Das kriegt man nicht schlanker hin.
Ein Surface mit LTE, wie es im Lumia verbaut ist, gibt es bisher nur als Gerücht.
Microsofts Kind

Microsoft hat ein Legacy-Problem und das heißt Windows XP. Auf XP folgte Vista, das wollte keiner. Und dann kam Windows 7, das aktuell bei weitem erfolgreichste Windows. Mehr als 47 Prozent der PCs laufen weltweit mit diesem System. Windows 8 spielt dagegen eher in der Liga von OS X.
Auf einer Pressekonferenz am CeBIT-Montag präsentierte Microsoft Zahlen. Die Marktanteile sind schwer zu bestimmen, gemessen werden vor allem Webaufrufe durch Windows PCs. Ob XP nun 27% oder 11% oder irgendwas dazwischen hat, spielt dabei kaum eine Rolle. Es sind jedenfalls mehr als PCs mit Windows 8.x.
Am 8. April endet der Support, nachdem es keine Updates mehr geben soll, auch keine Sicherheitsupdates. Meine Meinung: das geht schief. Man darf damit rechnen, dass Schwachstellen gnadenlos ausgenutzt werden, und dass es schon ein paar gibt, die nicht veröffentlicht werden, weil man erst dieses Support-Ende abwartet.
Man kann Microsoft dabei nichts vorwerfen. Sie haben XP mehr als zwölf Jahre unterstützt, mehr als jeder andere sein System. Sie haben rechtzeitig gewarnt, dass das nicht immer so weiter geht. Aber es wird ihnen nichts nützen. Wenn es Probleme mit Windows gibt, und die wird es geben, dann fällt das auf Microsoft zurück.
Microsoft kann XP nicht verstoßen. Es bleibt auf immer Microsofts Kind.
Kurze CeBIT dieses Jahr

Um 5:15 aufgestanden, erste Bahn um 6:05 und um halb zehn auf der CeBIT. Zweimal umgestiegen, lief wie am Schnürchen. Christian Just den Bus weggeschnappt (bad) und Thomes Cloer umarmt (good). Erste PK, ein paar Termine für meinen Mobile-Artikel in iX, eine zweite PK bei Microsoft als Vorbereitung für ein TV-Gespräch am Heisestand um 18:00 Uhr. Ein bisschen mit Raymond und Ines rumgealbert. Lumia 2520 rumgezeigt. Der Tag fing gut an.
Und dann lag ich vor Halle 2 plötzlich auf der Nase. Blutergüsse, Schwellungen, an Laufen war nicht mehr zu denken. Ohne Laufen keine CeBIT. War gleich beim Arzt und es scheint noch alles dran zu sein, tut halt nur saumäßig weh. Und so war ich heute Abend schon wieder zu Hause. Eigentlich hatte ich noch so viel vor.
Jetzt habe ich Fuß. Und Hand. :-)

It had just always been the profession in the back of her mind, the default.So then it must have been a bit of a shock when, after in 1975 becoming the first woman ever to receive a Ph.D. in computer science from MIT, Greif discovered that she didn't really enjoy teaching—she much preferred research.

Lumia 2520 - erste Eindrücke

24 intensive Stunden mit dem Nokia-Tablet und es gibt schon viel zu erzählen. Fangen wir mit dem Guten an.
Es gibt einen oft geschriebenen Satz, den ich zu vermeiden suche: 'liegt gut in der Hand'. Aber der passt einfach ganz prima beim 2520. Man fasst es gerne an. Das mattschwarze Material fühlt sich freundlich an, es gibt keine unangenehmen Kanten. Es ist etwa so groß wie ein Microsoft Surface, aber deutlich schlanker. Meistens hält man es in zwei Händen im Querformat, einzelne Artikel lese ich auch mal im Hochformat einhändig. Um das Display gibt es genug Rand, dass man es halten kann, ohne auf dem Bildschirm Aktionen auszulösen. 615 Gramm sind nicht wenig, aber sie fallen nicht auf.
Das Netzteil lädt den Akku sehr schnell. Nach einer Stunde kann man das 2520 schon mitnehmen. Da ist es noch nicht voll, aber voll genug. Und es hat gestern den ganzen Tag gehalten und diese Nacht auch noch. Der Zusatzakku im Power Keyboard wird vom Tablet aus mitgeladen, man hat also nur einen Vorgang.
Das Display ist schlicht sensationell. Full HD mit 1920x1280 Punkten, keine Pixel zu sehen, schwarz ist schwarz und doch ist es so hell, dass ich es im vollen Sonnenschein nutzen kann. Ja, es hat Fingertatschen und spiegelt. Aber das stört nicht wirklich. Das menschliche Gehirn ist schon ein Wunderwerk. Es sieht das, was es sehen will.
Das Power Keyboard ist eine prima Hülle, vom Material her ähnlich wie der Taucheranzug des iPad 1. Man kann das 2520 sauber aufstellen, aber nicht verstellen. Ich finde es auf dem Tisch richtig, aber für Zug und Flugzeug wahrscheinlich zu steil. Auf der Rückseite hat es zwei normale USB-Ports; dort kann man bei Bedarf sogar sein Handy nachladen. Verbunden sind Tastatur und Tablet durch eine Leiste mit zig Kontakten. Keine Ahnung, was da alles spricht, aber man benötigt kein Bluetooth. Das Keyboard ist allerdings deutlich schwer und dick: 571 Gramm. Ich glaube, das lasse ich wohl meistens zu Hause.
Bei der Inbetriebnahme habe ich MicroSIM und eine 64 GB SD-Karte eingebaut. Dazu muss man einen Schlitten mit einem kleinen Piekser ausrasten. Da ich schon mal ein 1020 bei dieser Operation gehimmelt habe, war ich mehr als vorsichtig. Die Speicherkarte werde ich vermutlich niemals tauschen, weil ich da nicht noch mal rein will. Beide Karten braucht man unterwegs, weil LTE/HSPA viel besser verfügbar ist als Wifi. Und weil die 32 GB im Gerät nicht ausreichen, wenn man ordentlich Daten mitnehmen will. Bei mir sind gerade mal 12 GB frei, nachdem Software und Karten für Here Maps installiert sind. Sobald ich mein Skydrive gespiegelt hatte, war die Maschine praktisch voll. Medien wie Musik oder Videos lege ich auf die SD-Card.
Ebenfalls gut: das 2520 hat die Kamera aus dem 720. Kein Pureview, aber eine Optik von Zeiss mit f/1.9. Viele Leute finden das albern, ein Tablet hochzuhalten um ein Bild zu machen, aber ich sehe auf dem großen Display sehr gut, was ich da eigentlich fotografiere. Nokia Camera gibt es ebenfalls, deshalb kann man von Belichtung über Schärfe bis zum Weißabgleich alles manuell einstellen. Das 2520 hat einen MicroHDMI-Ausgang, so dass man auch auf dem großen Bildschirm oder TV alles ausgeben kann. Daneben befindet sich ein USB-Anschluss im Format MicroUSB 3.0. Was für ein schreckliches Gebastel. Kein Wunder, dass Apple mit Lightning eine elegante Alternative entwickelt hat.
Aufladen kann man das 2520 nur über ein eigenes Netzteil mit einem runden Stecker. Die Buchse gleich gefährlich dem Headset-Ausgang auf der gleichen Seite. Da muss man ein bisschen aufpassen, nicht den falschen Stecker in die falsche Buchse zu zwingen. Das Netzteil ist leicht und von guter Qualität, das Kabel neigt nicht zum Verknoten. Aber es gibt eine unglückliche Designentscheidung. Zieht man den Winkelstecker ab, dann kann man dort kein handelsübliches Kabel einstecken. Die Buchse ist mutwillig so geformt, dass das Kabel nicht reinpasst. Wäre das mein Gerät, würde ich das zurecht dremeln.
Leider hat das 2520 einen hässlichen Fehler, der sich in zahlreichen Foren findet. Es wacht manchmal nicht aus dem Schlaf auf. Berührt man die Windows-Taste, dann bekommt man eine Rückmeldung, das Display springt aber nicht an. Da hilft nichts mehr, außer 10 Sekunden halten, loslassen, einmal drücken, Neustart. Wehe, man hat ein offenes ungesichertes Dokument. Das ist mir bei Surface auch schon passiert, aber nicht so häufig. Das muss Microkia dringend fixen.
Es liegt immer am Menschen

Letzte Woche hatte ich ein kniffliges Problem: ein BlackBerry wollte das aktuelle Software-Update nicht laden. Als Ausweg kann man immer ein Image drüber bügeln, aber das wollte ich nicht wirklich. Ich wollte das Update über den normalen Kanal haben. Die einschlägigen BlackBerry-Mitarbeiter sind im Rheinland und da war fünfte Jahreszeit. Also habe ich in Amerika angefragt und fand auch einen Support-Menschen mit wichtigem Titel, aber der wurde irgendwann unsichtbar, als die üblichen Hausmittel versagten. Eigentlich war alles korrekt, aber es ging eben nicht.
Am Mittwoch dann die Auflösung. Ein engagierter Mitarbeiter mit technischen Wissen fand den Fehler. Ich sage nicht wer, sonst holt in der Fluch der guten Tat ein, sonst muss er immer alles reparieren. Es war ein Fehler, der nicht sein darf, nicht mal sein kann, aber in diesem einen so speziellen Fall eben doch. Er besorgte ein neues Gerät aus dem gleichen Los, behob den Fehler dort und schickte es mir zum Austausch.
Es bedarf einer kleinen Anzahl von Menschen, die fehlerhafte Systeme reparieren können. Oft bemerkt man sie erst, wenn sie nicht mehr da sind.
Sowas macht man nicht

Das Display des Lumia 2520 ist dermaßen hell, dass ich einen unmöglichen Versuchsaufbau gemacht habe. Volle Mittagssonne, Gerät auf die Brüstung. Man sieht an der weißen Fläche und dem dunklen Himmel, wie hell es da ist. So würde man seinen Rechner nie aufbauen, allein schon, damit er nicht schmilzt.
Und das ist das Display, wenn es eingeschaltet ist. Man sieht mich als dunklen Schatten, weil ich die Sonne im Rücken habe. Die Spiegelung kriegt man im Hirn "weggerechnet". Wäre das Display matt, würde man bei diesem Licht gar nichts mehr sehen.

Samsung fühlt sicher immer so unsagbar billig an, weil das Material lügt. Was aussieht wie Alu ist in Wirklichkeit Plastik. Und nun Lederoptik. Sieht aus wie schlechtes Leder, ist aber Plastik. Und die Naht ist natürlich auch keine, sondern nur im Plastik geformt.
Lederoptik ist Aldi-Chic. Und so sehen nun die neuen Chromebooks und das Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 aus.
Update your Plantronics Voyager Legend

These days everything gets updates. That's both a good and a bad thing. On the plus, the product improves, on the minus you have to take care of a zoo of devices. Today I found out that Plantronics now has a Mac updater, and I connected my Voyager Legend. I was down three releases. Here are just three items from the release notes:
- Improved functionality with iPhone 5s and iOS7
- Improved audio quality for both narrowband and wideband calls
- 4x-improved wind noise reduction

QR code on your business card

I just printed a QR code on my business cards to make it easier for people to transfer my contact details. There are two ways to do that:
- A QR code can hold a vcard. When you scan this code, you will be able to see the contact details immediately.
- The QR code contains a URL to a vcard. You place that vcard on a server you control. The scanner needs access to the Internet to read the card.
So far I have used the first option, but that's very static. If only a phone number changes, you have to create a new QR code. With the second option you can change the vcard details at any time. And through your server logs, you will find out if people ever use that code.
On Windows Phone it's a particularly easy to read a code. Just hit the search button on the front, no matter where you are. Then hit the eye at the bottom right and there you are. You can also scan and OCR text if you need to. When you hit the musical note, you can "shazam" music. Or you hit the microphone in the upper right and speak.
On BlackBerry 10 use the SmartTags app which handles NFC tags and QR codes. On Android you need to install an app like QR Droid. For iOS the goto app is Scan.

There are 15 more available (to me): Audible, 7digital, Amazon Cloud Player, Concert Vault, DAR.fm Record Radio, Hearts of Space, Juke, Last.fm, Murfie, Napster by Rhapsody, Quobuz, Rdio, simfy, Stitcher Smart Radio, WiMP.
On top of that, there is SONOS Lab with 7 more: Calm Radio, Daytrotter, hotelradio.fm, iHeartRadio, MLB.com Gameday Audio, rara.com, RUSC. And finally, I know of two major players in development that I cannot talk about.
That's 30 music services, that SONOS players can stream right from the internet, independently from your smartphone. And that's just here. In the US, there are some services I cannot even tap into.

'Baking Soda' kommt so häufig in amerikanischen Rezepten und überraschenden Hausmitteln zum Einsatz, dass ich wissen wollte, wie man das in Deutschland kauft. Geschwind auf Twitter gefragt:
Frage an die Chemiker: Unter welchen Handelsnamen kann man in Deutschland 'Baking Soda' (NaHCO3) und 'Washing Soda' (Na2CO3) kaufen?
Ergebnis:
- 'Baking Soda' ist Natriumhydrogencarbonat, Handelsname Kaiser Natron oder Bullrich-Salz. Backpulver besteht zu 90% aus Natriumhydrogencarbonat.
- 'Washing Soda' ist Natriumcarbonat und wird auch hier als Waschsoda in der Drogerie verkauft, zum Beispiel von Holste.
Mit Chemie habe ich mich seit sage und schreibe 40 Jahren nicht mehr beschäftigt und da darf man dumm fragen. :-) Und damit ich das nicht vergesse, schreibe ich es hier auf.

Ein Verrechnungsscheck

Oh, das ist aber schlau. Da verschickt Ihr eine Rückzahlung als Verrechnungsscheck, wohl wissend dass viele Leute vergessen werden, den einzureichen. Und die Gebühren könnt Ihr leider auch nicht übernehmen.
Dabei wäre es doch so einfach. Ihr zieht doch jeden Monat Geld von meinem Konto ein. Aber ich habe eine Idee. Ich kündige jetzt diese Einzugserlaubnis und schicke Euch Verrechnungsschecks. Jeden Monat einen etwas zu hohen Abschlag und zwischendurch dann einen kleineren Betrag, der das passend macht. Dazu legen ich Euch ein paar Flyer in den Umschlag, um Euch über die neuesten Marketingsprüche zu informieren. Das macht doch sicher nicht zu viel Mühe.
