Katrina disaster relief

I just received a plea for help from a fellow German who wants to donate to charity for disaster relief of hurricane Katrina. However, like many Germans he does not have a credit card. We don't actually need them here since we have a very well developed EC card system. Since all the charities he found only took donations by credit card he was stuck.
Esther did a quick google for "Katrina donation paypal" and came up with this link. If you have any other good sources with charities that accept donations via PayPal, please let me know in the comments. We have no ways to verify which organizations are good.

Gestern wurde dein Paket von DPD angeholt, heute Morgen wieder zurückgebracht weil "... das ist zu schwer für den Preis...."
Auf meine Frage, was denn die Mehrkosten seien kam die Antwort - 4 Euro. "Null Probleme," sagte ich, "hier sind 4 Euro". Und jetzt kommt der Gag, der Fahrer sagte nämlich: "Nein das geht so nicht, Sie müssen mir die Retoure unterschreiben und abnehmen, und dann müssen Sie telefonisch/Internet neu bestellen, und dann komme ich morgen vorbei und hole das Paket ab."
Jetzt sind mir die Kosten klar, warum die hoch sind. Warum hat er denn gestern nicht bemerkt, dass das Paket zu schwer ist? Warum hat man mich gestern nicht einfach angerufen und mitgeteilt, dass das Paket zu schwer ist? Warum hat man nicht einfach 4 Euro mehr per Bankeinzug abgezogen, oder oder oder?

E-Plus. Auf die habe ich gesetzt. Weil sie schon beim Branding der Handys Zurückhaltung üben und auch den besten Vieltelefonierertarif haben. Und jetzt sollen sie eine Datenflatrate für GPRS und UMTS einführen, wie Heise berichtet. Knapp 40 Euro sind noch eine ganze Menge Geld, aber die Telekom hat ja auch mal mit 80 Euro für eine Internet-Flatrate angefangen. Was ein fairer Preis ist, wird sich erst noch weisen.
Aber wenn das alles so passiert wie vorhergesagt, dann kann man ab dem 1. September endlich mobile Computer für den Internetzugang nutzen, ohne mit exorbitanten und nicht vorhersehbaren Rechnungen gestraft zu werden. Ich nehme an, jeder kennt einen, der schon mal vierstellige Beträge abdrücken musste -- bei mir sind es sogar mehrere Freunde.
Da sehen O2 und Vodafone mit ihren immobilen Tarifen "Surf@home" und "Zuhause Web" ganz alt aus. Der einzige Grund für diese Tarife war ja, die Abzocke bei den mobilen Datentarifen aufrecht zu erhalten.
Ich hoffe sehr, dass E-Plus den Markt damit genauso aufmischt wie mit Simyo. Die haben es gefressen: Ein transparentes Angebot, bei dem man vorher weiß, wie viel Geld man ausgibt.

Das ist schwierig:
Laut Angaben von Meteorologen driftete der Sturm leicht nach Osten ab. Damit könnte der Stadt das Schlimmste erspart bleiben: Die größten Schäden entstehen bei den gegen den Uhrzeigersinn wirbelnden Tropenstürmen typischerweise am rechten Rand, also im Nordwesten des Sturms.
Das sollte dann wohl "im Nordosten" heißen, wenn ein Sturm wie dieser nach Norden zieht. Ich habe es längst aufgegeben, mit Menschen ohne Navigationsausbildung von Himmelsrichtungen zu sprechen. Dazu kommt ja auch noch, dass ein Westwind nach Osten bläst, eine Westströmung aber nach Westen fließt. Und wer Steuerbord und Backbord kapiert, für den ist auch die Relativitätstheorie leicht zu begreifen. In diesem Sinne:

RAZR Reloaded

Yesterday I violated the "if it ain't broken don't fix it" rule badly. What was the reason? I like the Motorola RAZR very much, but it has a big shortcoming: When looking up a name in the address book you can only type the first character and it immediately jumps. Typing another character jumps to another entry who starts with that character. So you can't type more than one character to filter the address book. This translates to a lot of scrolling if you have a large address book.
It turns out that newer firmware versions have a switch that lets you select between Jump and Find. There are also new features for which I could not care less, for instance an application that lets you record videos. With some hunting around on the Internet I had everything I need. A flash tool, new firmware releases, or so I thought. I flashed the new image, and lo and behold, my RAZR was fried. It would boot up, and then I could not enter the code to unlock the SIM. Swapped the SIM with another one that isn't locked, and the RAZR would start, connect to the network, and reboot. Lather, rinse, repeat. There was no way to recover. Every time I tried to flash a different version, it would reboot. It was completely hosed. I called myself an idiot for fixing something that worked before, and went to bed.
Time passes. :-)
Some problems need a good night's sleep. Today I learned that you press three buttons (*, #, ON) and the RAZR goes into flash mode. That looked much better. I also learned that I had an old boot loader (07.something) which would not play with the new firmware. So I flashed a new boot loader (08.23) and everything was back to normal. Pfeew. In order so save you the same trouble, here is a short list of things that did work for me:

I am trying to find a screenshot. It is about as ridiculous as trying to get screenshots during Lotusphere. Novell is as stupified as IBM, that reporters might need a picture they can actually print.

Update: I found a bigger version of the same picture. Apparantly the product does not exist. Otherwise there would be more than one. ;-)
Update: It turns out the screenshot was well hidden. Behind a "Download as JPEG" there was a link to a *.jpg.bin file, which when unpacked revealed a *.bin file, which should have been named *.jpeg. After a bit of tweaking I was able to retrieve a 1400 pixel wide image, which btw still contained the Word status bar.

English selected as the official language of the European Union over German

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

talk.google.com - where is the beef?

Google has started to offer IM services today, using the standard XMPP protocol, the artist formerly known as Jabber. Now we have five big IM networks: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and Google. AIM and ICQ interconnect, the others don't. Everyone of those players tries to own their user base. It's like every big company running their own email system, where you cannot send mails from one company to the other.
XMPP should be different. It uses an address scheme very similar to email. I am volker.weber@gmail.com. That is user@domain. If I wanted to connect to vowe@jabber.com (I own that as well), then the server for jabber.com talks to the server for gmail.com and relays the message. Much as we know it from email. You can also subscribe to presence information for people on different servers. A privacy feature requires you to authorize others before they can see you or send messages to you. You can revoke that authorization at any time. It's all built into the XMPP protocol.
It appears though that Google has chosen to not listen to requests from other XMPP servers. Nor does it talk to them. Thus Google shows the same defect like all the other IM providers: Own your user base.
And that definitely is evil.

The universal charger

My gadget box contains a whole lot of chargers for my mobile, the GPS receiver, the camera, the iBook and so forth. However, most of the accessory devices I have been testing in the last months charge over USB. Today I received a GPS receiver that hooks up via USB or Bluetooth. And it charges over USB as well. The wall wart has a standard USB plug. There is a host of other devices that use chargers with mini-USB plugs, like my Samsung MP3 player, the Motorola RAZR and so forth.
That is why I declare the mini-USB port as the standard interface to charge gadgets.
Google Jabber lives

Server: talk.google.com. Use your GMail credentials. Depending on the client, you can use audio and video.
Update: Google Talk clients can make phone calls. iChat clients can make phone and audio calls. But Google Talk does not make phone calls to iChat (and vice versa). talk.google.com also does not accept requests from other servers. Which is sort of evil, because Jabber has a user@host scheme that lets servers interconnect easily. So for now it is only accessible by user@gmail.com. Let's hope Google fixes that.
Solidworks-Viewer für den Mac

Solidworks, Hersteller von 3D-CAD Software-Lösungen, hat einen Mac-Viewer für elektronische Zeichnungen veröffentlicht:
View, print, and review all types of eDrawings files, AutoCAD and SolidWorks parts, assemblies and drawings
Solidworks hat Entwurfsprogramme für den PC, aber keine Mac-Versionen. Mit Hilfe des eDrawings-Viewer kann man Solidworks-Modelle nun aber auch auf dem Mac betrachten. Je nach Modell kann man dabei auch einzelne Teile aufklappen und im dreidimensionalen Raum drehen und betrachten. Das ist eine große Hilfe, wenn man solche Modelle auf einem Mac vorführen will. Bisher war es nötig, einzelne Ansichten zu exportieren und man konnte damit keine bewegten Modelle vorführen.
Das hier gezeigte Solidworks-3D-Modell ist ein CANbus Verstärkermodul, gestaltet von DESIGN.MATTIS.

Eigentlich ganz einfach

Ich freue mich über Kommentare. Die halten die Website am Laufen. Keine Kommentare, keine neuen Beiträge. Dabei bitte ich nur um eine Kleinigkeit: Bitte füllt das mit Eurem vollen Namen und einer E-Mailadresse aus, an die ich antworten kann. Das kapieren alle Besucher, außer einigen aus Deutschland. Und deshalb verschwinden hier täglich rund ein Dutzend Kommentare.
Warum ich eine funktionierende E-Mailadresse haben möchte, sollte einleuchten. Aber warum der volle Name? Das hat ursprünglich damit zu tun gehabt, dass ich zu viele Menschen kenne, die Alex, Thomas oder Michael heißen. Mit Nachnamen weiß man einfacher, dass da niemand Selbstgespräche führt. Nachdem ich diese Regel eingeführt habe, stieg aber zugleich die Qualität der Beiträge. Mit seinem Namen möchte man in der Regel nur Dinge verbunden haben, zu denen man auch steht.
Und auch da gibt es Ausnahmen. Deshalb hat vowe.net eine schwarze Liste. Wer drauf steht, kann keine Kommentare abgeben. Manche sind freiwillig drauf, zum Beispiel jemand, der sich abends die Kante gibt und danach Dinge schreibt, die ihm am nächsten Tag leid tun. Andere habe ich drauf gesetzt, weil ich einfach keine Lust mehr hatte, mich jedes mal zu fragen, was dieser Unsinn nun wieder soll. Meine Toleranzschwelle gegenüber hanebüchenen Zusicherungen ist relativ niedrig. Die schwarze Liste wird nicht veröffentlicht und ist geheim. Außer mir kennt sie niemand. Wenn vowe.net ohne weiteren Hinweis Kommentare nicht annimmt, dann hat es wenig Zweck, es immer wieder zu probieren. Wie kommt man runter von dieser Liste? Gar nicht. Das Internet ist groß und weit. Irgendwo wird sich jemand finden, der zuhört.
An die Nichtmerker: Erspart mir und Euch einfach die Arbeit. Ich habe ein sehr simples System, das einen Kommentar mit zwei Klicks aus dem System schmeisst. Und ich habe einen Hausmeister, der mir dabei hilft. Der wirkt vor allem dann, wenn ich offline bin. Und wir wissen recht genau, wo der andere gerade steckt.
Nein, es gibt keine Ausnahmen. Auch nicht für gute Freunde.

Ich stehe in der Schlange vor der Kasse, als mir eine scharfe Blondine, die etwas weiter hinten steht, freundlich zuwinkt und mich anlächelt.
Ich kann es nicht fassen, daß so ein Blickfang mir zuwinkt und obwohl sie mir irgendwie bekannt vorkommt, kann ich dennoch nicht sagen von woher ich sie kenne. Dennoch frage ich sie: "Entschuldigung, kennen wir uns?"
Sie erwidert: "Ich bin mir nicht sicher, aber ich denke sie müssten der Vater einer meiner Kinder sein!"
Ich erinnerte mich zurück an das aller einzige Mal, als ich untreu war. "Um Gottes Willen! Bist Du diese Stripperin, die ich an meinem Junggesellenabend auf dem Tischfussballtisch vor den Augen meiner Kumpel genommen habe, während Deine Kollegin mich mit nasser Sellerie auspeitschte und mir eine Gurke in den Arsch schob?"
"Nein" erwidert sie kalt. "Ich bin die Klassenlehrerin von ihrem Sohn."

Treo #5 coming up

Timm has called today. He is swapping my Treo #4 for his, which has not crashed in five months of heavy use. This one -- let's call it #5 -- is known not to have any hardware or firmware issues. If I break #5, then I know it is my setup. Either my SIM card, or one of the applications I use.
My plan is to run it plain vanilla for a few days. If it has not crashed in a week, I will put the SD card in. If it has no problem with the SD card, I will restore all data and applications. Should it crash then, I will need a long time to find which one causes trouble. If I only could reproduce the error at will ...
Nick has reported he has no problems at all. Stefan is fine since he dumped the latest Chattermail and went back to 1.05. Timm and I so want to find the source of those reboots.

Ich musste erst mal ein bisschen nachdenken, bis ich mir erlaube, das zu kommentieren. Zunächst einmal fand ich die Angelegenheit gar nicht so wichtig. Bei der Frage "relevant für Heiseticker" habe ich ziemlich schnell entschieden: Nein, nicht relevant. Aber im Hinterkopf störte mich etwas und ich konnte nicht recht festmachen, was das eigentlich ist. Jetzt weiß ich es: Dieser Anspruch von "weltweiter Größe". Groß waren einige der Protagonisten bisher nämlich vor allem im Versagen.
Globalware, das hatten wir hier schon einmal. Wer die Vorgeschichte nicht kennt, der muss in die Zeit zurückgehen, wo Geld billig und der Sex noch sicher war, oder umgekehrt:
Es waren mal ein paar schlaue Füchse, die glaubten mit Standard-Anwendungen auf Basis von Lotus Notes richtig viel Geld verdienen zu können. Da waren zunächst mal die drei prominenten Akteure Intraware (ex-Anal-ysis), Gedys und die Teamwork. Am neuen Markt holten sie sich viel Geld ab. Zum Ende der Sturm- und Drangphase, in der den Aktionären und gutgläubigen Mitarbeitern immer wieder das Blaue vom Himmel versproche wurde, trat man sich fröhlich gegenseitig vor das Schienbein und spielte solange es ging "heile Welt".
Konsequenterweise scheiterten alle glorios. Die während der letzten Rettungsversuche gefeuerten Gründerpersönlichkeiten tauchten nach einer Schamfrist wieder auf, kauften günstig die Überreste, sprich laufende und von vergesslichen Kunden nicht gekündigte Wartungsverträge inklusive Namens-und Lizenzrechte, und machten, diesmal in Harmonie vereint, weiter wie bisher. Andere wiederum gründeten fröhlich neue Unternehmen, führten auch diese innerhalb kürzester Zeit in die Pleite und hinterließen für IBM ein Schlachtfeld düpierter Investoren, Mitarbeiter und Kunden.
So kam es dann, dass die Analysis-Intraware-Globalware-Gedys-TJ-Group Konsorten wieder fröhlich verkünden, sie wären die Größten, während die Kollegen von der Teamwork ohne rot zu werden, im selben Design und mit gleichem Kopf wieder durch die Lande reisen. Kurze Zeit schien dann ein Unternehmen wie die inform. AG von der Unglaubwürdigkeit der anderen Kollegen zu profitieren und schwang sich mit IBM Personal (und deren Gehaltsvorstellungen) kurzzeitig zum größten Partner im deutschsprachigen Raum auf. Auch dies endete wie es enden musste.
Wer passt in diese Aufzählung nicht rein? Richtig: Group Technologies. Und deshalb frage ich mich, ob die Jubelmeldung wirklich zum Jubeln ist. Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Ad hoc Meldung vom 20.4.:
Karlsruhe, 20. April 2005 - Der Vorstand der GROUP Technologies AG, Karlsruhe, hat den Jahresabschluss für das Geschäftsjahr 2004 aufgestellt, welcher vom Aufsichtsrat gebilligt wurde.
Das Unternehmen konnte einen Umsatzzuwachs um 10,3% verzeichnen. Der Umsatz des Konzerns nach IFRS/IAS betrug im Berichtszeitraum TEUR 6.802 (2003: TEUR 6.166). Die Umsätze aus dem Neukundengeschäft konnten um 6%, die Umsätze aus der Softwarewartung um 17% zulegen.
Das operative Geschäft der Gesellschaft war seit 2001 erstmalig wieder positiv, allerdings gelang es dem Unternehmen nicht, insgesamt die Gewinnzone zu erreichen. Der Jahresabschluss weist ein EBIT im Konzern vor Sondereinflüssen von TEUR 138 (Vorjahr: TEUR -870) aus. Das EBIT nach Sondereinflüssen, die auf Abschreibungen auf aktivierten Eigenleistungen und Firmenwerten sowie zusätzlichen Aufwendungen im Rahmen der Reduzierung des US-Engagements beruhen, betrug auf Konzernebene TEUR -790.
Daraus ist ersichtlich, dass die Group auch in 2004 trotz massiver Anstrengungen seit 2001 keinen Gewinn bzw. positiven EBIT erzielen konnte. In 2000 wurde ein Überschuss von 300 TEUR erzielt wobei allerdings 200 TEUR durch Zinsergebnisse eingespielt worden sind. Ein Brancheninsider meint dazu:
Aus meiner Sicht stimmt bei der Group der Umsatz und die Mitarbeiteranzahl einfach nicht überein.
Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Globalware einen der externen Investoren der Group von einer außerbörslichen Übernahme der Aktienpackete überzeugen konnte. Von einem freiwilligen Zusammenschluss kann daher m.E. nicht die Rede sein, zumal ich hier keinerlei belastbare Synergieeffekte feststellen kann.
Die Globalware war bei der Übernahme der Intraware sehr clever und hat hier viel Geld verdient. Bei Group kann man das auch machen, zumal der Großteil der Umsätze aus den Wartungsverträgen kommt und daher vergleichweise stabil ist.
Auch wenn das alles reine Spekulationen sind, wäre ich als Group-Mitarbeiter ziemlich besorgt.
Nokia 9300 still going strong

After almost two weeks the 9300 (above left) still wins over the Treo 650 (middle), the Motorola RAZR (right) and the Nokia 6630 (not in this picture). It does have this "Is this your mobile or are you just happy to see me?" problem, but it wins with its full keyboard against 6630 and RAZR, and with stability against the Treo. I am waiting for Treo #2 to return from the keyboard repair and that might change the landscape again, because that also runs TomTom and a whole lot of other applications that I don't have for the 9300. I have returned the SonyEricsson P910i and the xda IIi a while ago. They both did not earn the editor-refuses-to-give-it-back award.
I keep recommending the RAZR as a small and stylish phone. Everything works well, with the notable exception of the address book that will only let you type the first character of the first name to locate an entry. Lots of scroll time from there. The Treo and the Nokias do much better in that respect, since you can type any part of the name. The 9300 also lets you type a part of the company name and it will filter according to the search hits.
Since I wrote about my first impressions almost two week ago, Agile Messenger has gone commercial. After seven days you need to either buy a subscription at $3/month or purchase with a onetime fee of $20. Your "Customer ID" is actually tied to the SIM-card, so you can use that license on a number of phones if you use the same SIM-card.
Frankly, I am very surprised that I like the 9300 so much. I had not expected that to happen.

Mambo splits

Mambo server is believed to be one of the best open source CMS systems out there. Miro CEO Peter Lamont has now incorporated a Mambo Foundation Inc. that wants to control who can contribute to the project. This has alienated the core development team.
Miro holds the rights to the name and has not transferred those rights to the foundation. Since Mambo is published under the GPL, anybody can take the code and fork it into a different project. Who else could do this better than the core development team?

Repeat after me: DRM hurts the customer

The latest Dave Matthews Band CD ships with a copy protection that prevents a PC user from reading the songs into iTunes and subsequently onto an iPod. Mac users don't have this problem since the copy protection scheme only attacks PCs.
Since there are a lot of iPod users with Windows PCs, the band explains on their homepage how to create a CD without the copy protection:
Once the WMA files are on your PC you can open and listen to the songs with Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher. Using Windows Media Player only, you can then burn the songs to a CD. Please note that in order to burn the files, you need to upgrade to or already have Windows Media Player 9 or greater.
Once the CD has been burned, place the copied CD back into your computer and open iTunes. iTunes can now rip the songs as you would a normal CD.
This proves once again that an DRM'ed CD is an inferior product. It punishes only the paying customer. The website then takes a shot at Apple:
Please note an easier and more acceptable solution requires cooperation from Apple, who we have already reached out to in hopes of addressing this issue. To help speed this effort, we ask that you use the following link to contact Apple and ask them to provide a solution that would easily allow you to move content from protected CDs into iTunes or onto your iPod rather than having to go through the additional steps above.
I am not really sure what they are hinting at. I assume it is the lack of support for "protected" WMA files in iTunes and on the iPod. Shouldn't they be talking to their record company instead?

Under the deal, SMBs can download Red Hat Enterprise Linux and IBM Workplace Services Express preinstalled in a VMware environment and packaged as a virtual machine for a free 90-day trial. The download will be available next month through Red Hat Network.
That is one smart move. A pre-packaged and fine tuned installation ready to consume on any VMware platform from Workstation to ESX server. This is the single best way to test server applications. Brilliant move.

Can anybody explain the small icons on the two clocks displayed here in the clock appliactions? There is a sun and a cityscape in Darmstadt, and a sun and a flag on a globe in Chicago. What do they mean?
One of the nice things that surprised me is that I can browser the storage on the Nokia from Snoopy via Bluetooth. Very convenient when you want to move files in and out of the device:
Ben Rose also explained to me where I can find the GPRS traffic monitor. There is a Connection Manager in the Tools folder. Open that, hit Menu and there it is: GPRS Counter. His 9500 also has a WLAN counter.
Nokia 9300 and Apple iSync 2.1

The Nokia 9300 has synced with Snoopy just nicely. There was not a single issue.
If you look at Apple's iSync page you won't find the Communicator 9300/9500 devices. The reason is that there is no Series 80 UI for the iSync component on the device. Today that has only been released for the UIQ and Series 60 interfaces of the Symbian operating system. Since you never need to look at the UI, you can use it without any difficulties.
The only thing you need to do is convince iSync that it should accept the 9300 or 9500 as a supported Symbian device. If you use this installer written by Diego Iaconelli, then you don't need to fiddle with plist files. It also adds a nice icon for your device to iSync.

How to reinstall Windows XP without activation

A fresh install of Windows is usually quite snappy and gets slower and more unwieldy over the years. The only remedy is to reinstall from scratch once in a while. Windows XP however requires an activation after each installation. You can circumvent this activation by keeping a copy of
\Windows\system32\WPA.DBL
and replacing the file after the fresh XP install.

Hopefully, by now you’ve seen from our posts that there are a lot of new features and work going into IE 7. As part of this update, we’re refreshing our icon and logotype. We considered more radical departures from our current logo, but blue “e” with the ring is very recognizable and familiar to users, so we elected instead to make more subtle changes.
Also re-branded from Microsoft Internet Explorer to Windows Internet Explorer. Still working on supporting IETF standards, I presume. :-)

It may look like you are browsing the web through a mail drop, but this is actually the first time I can browse regular web pages with a mobile phone. Smaller screens work only with WAP pages. Since the 9300 has a VGA-wide screen it can easily accomodate the typical 500 pixel that most pages are designed for. Nice.
Changes in Daylight Savings Time

The US is going to change the rules for DST:
Prior to 2007, DST starts on the first Sunday in April and ends on the last Sunday in October. Starting in 2007, DST will start on the second Sunday in March (3 weeks earlier) and end on the first Sunday in November (1 week later).
In this part of the world DST starts at the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in Oktober. There used to be one week at the beginning of DST where international appointments went all wrong. This has now been improved so that will now be three weeks of confusion.

Aus dem Polizeibericht:
Die Beamten wollte das Fahrzeug anhalten und kontrollieren. Der Fahrer flüchtete jedoch ..., überfuhr mehrere rote Ampeln und gefährdete in wilder Fahrt Fußgänger und andere Kraftfahrer erheblich. In der Frankfurter Straß ... kam es dann durch überhöhte Geschwindigkeit zu einen Verkehrsunfall mit einem anderen Fahrzeug. Es wurde niemand verletzt. Der Fahrer wurde festgenommen.
Es handelte sich um einen 30-jährigen drogenabhängigen Mann aus Michelstadt, der bereits 89-Mal(!) wegen Diebstahls und Verstöße gegen das Betäubungsmittelgesetz polizeilich in Erscheinung getreten ist. Der gleiche Mann wurde bereits am Dienstag, 9. August 2005, in Arheilgen mit einem ebenfalls gestohlenen Fahrzeug - auch nach einer wilden Verfolgungsfahrt mit Verkehrsunfall - festgenommen.
Der Unfall war ungefähr dort, wo ich mehrmals täglich die Straße quere. Ich kapier das nicht. Was muss eigentlich passieren, bevor so jemand stillgelegt wird? Muss der erst einen Menschen töten?

Ich sehe diese Mails nicht automatisch als Spam an, da man problemlos vom Verteiler runterkommt. Ausserdem ist der Berater durchaus wählerisch, wen er in seinen Verteiler aufnimmt. Trotzdem fangen diese Mails nach einiger Zeit an zu nerven, weil sie eben in 99% der Fälle aus dem einen oder anderen Grund uninteressant sind. Sei es, weil sie das falsche Fachgebiet betreffen oder der Einsatzort uninteressant ist.
Nach einiger Überlegung bin ich der Ansicht, dass man dieses Problem viel besser mit einer Blogsoftware lösen könnte. Jede Anfrage ist ein Artikel, dem jeweils mehrere Kategorien zugeordnet werden. Interessenten könnten dann einen RSS-Feed abonnieren, dessen Kategorien dem eigenen Interessengebiet entsprechen. Mit Textpattern könnte man so etwas spielend realisieren.

Nur zur Sicherheit, falls das nicht jeder sofort kapiert. Es geht natürlich nicht um eine Heiratsagentur. Auf dem eigenen Konto landen Überweisungen von Konten, deren Zugangsdaten durch Phishing ausgespäht wurden. Es dauert nicht so schrecklich lange, bis die Kontoinhaber den Betrug bemerken und anzeigen. Und wo schaut die Polizei dann nach? Richtig, beim Kontoinhaber des Empfängerkontos. Das gibt schon mal genug juristische Probleme und das eingegangene Geld ist natürlich auch längst zurückgefordert. Ich weiß nicht, was dann schlimmer ist: Dass der Reingelegte Geld per Western Union auf Nimmerwiedersehen verschenkt hat, oder dass er das unterlassen hat und auf einem Berg von Geld sitzt, dessen Herkunft er nicht erklären kann. Ausser mit einer E-Mail von einer Katarina mit russischer Freemail-Adresse. Stefan meint:

LotusScript plugin for Eclipse

I am not really sure what this gentleman is saying. It appears he is talking about a plugin for Eclipse which lets a developer work on the LotusScript code inside a Notes database. The screenshot that I have seen (and am not ready to publish yet) suggests that the code is exported as DXL and then read into Eclipse. The Domino perspective shows a dependancy tree and a class hierarchy tree.
It's going to be interesting to see how this story develops over the next days. I made sure I have captured this web page. ;-)

First Nokia 9300 impressions

The 9300 has arrived today. That was quick, Mika!
First impression: I like it. In fact, I like it a lot. I have not even looked at the manual but I was already able to sync it up with the iBook after a little tweaking around with iSync. I have also hooked the email client up with my IMAP server and installed Agile Messenger. This is a quick chat with Ed Brill:
This proves I can take screenshots. :-) The 9300 has screenshot capability built in. You just hit Shift-Ctrl-Alt-S. Try to do that on a keyboard as small as this one. Mika has sent me the german version, so I get all the Umlaut keys. The comma and colon keys however are left of the space key. That will take some time to get used to.
You probably have read elsewhere that the 9300 is slow. That is indeed true. However, once you have loaded the apps that you will be using, it is no longer that noticeable. It works as with all the Symbian phones. The apps load slowly but then they remain in memory and you are fine.
As you can see in the picture above, the 9300 is about as long as the Treo with its stubby antenna, but not as wide. What you can't see is that it is about as thick and has the same weight. While the lid is closed it feels like a 90's mobile. The screen on the outside is big enough, you get real buttons to make phone calls and you have access to all your phone numbers in the directory.
Once you open the lid you are in a completely different world. A nice keyboard that is the best I have seen in any mobile phone, a very readable screen that is 640 pixels across, and a set of softkeys next to the screen with quick access to program functions.
A nice touch: It does not have a camera. So this is a real business phone that won't get you in trouble with your customer's policies regarding the use of cameras on premise. The larger 9500 gives you WLAN but it also comes with a camera. Decisions, decisions. :-)

Reviewing the Palm Lifedrive

Since I am currently not really trusting my Treo 650 I have played a bit more with the Lifedrive. My experience so far is quite a mixed bag.
It starts with the design and look and feel of the device. I like the looks but it is quite large and heavy. Definitely not for the shirt pocket. In this respect it falls into the Newton trap. A wee bit too large to have it with you all the time. This is now the fate of many PDAs though. People have a phone that can sync with the desktop and thus have all their phone numbers in their pockets already. There is not so many people who also use the calendar, and if they do they will most likely do the calendar in Outlook and also sync that with the phone.
So the Livedrive has to be more than the ordinary PDA. And indeed it is. You get a whole lot of storage and at first I thought, I would never fill it up. I am supposed to have all my personal files on it, but that does not really work with a Mac. Most of the Lifedrive software only runs on a PC. I can use the plain old Hotsync and I can put the device into drive mode and hook it up to the USB port as an expensive external drive. Actually the LiveDrive sucks as an external drive. You could fit a 2.5" drive into the same size, spare the delicate screen, get 80 instead of 4 gig and still save 70%. Plus, the LiveDrive needs this superspecial Palm cable. Leave it behind and you are stuck.
Now look at this:
What happened? TomTom happened. You can just copy your maps to the drive without fiddling with SD cards. And you don't have to juggle them. Just drop them on.
Now we found something the LiveDrive can do and the ordinary PDA can't. Sort of. Because you can get a Tungsten T3 off eBay and then drop a 2 gig SD card in and you come pretty close. But there is another thing that only the LifeDrive has: WLAN. This is actually my quickest way to check up on email. Press the "favorite program" button in the lower right hand corner and launch Versamail. Hit "Get" and it connects to my WLAN and downloads all new mail. In a matter of seconds. Since the LiveDrive is currently the only Palm with built-in Wifi, you can only substitute with an external SD card on the Tungsten, which means you have to take out the 2 gig SD card I just mentioned. Or you could use a PocketPC. ;-)
Battery life is very good. I have not timed it, but I can use it a few days without worrying. And then it recharges really quickly. The only downsides so far are: There is no phone in the LiveDrive, it is quite big, and ... it is dog slow. Everything you do spins up the harddrive and then you need to wait for the data to be read into main memory. Which slows things down everywhere. Switching programs, entering addresses into TomTom, ... everything.
As I said, a very mixed bag.

Amazing photos from the Shuttle

Looking at these amazing pictures I was wondering what kind of camera was being used. It had to be digital, since we can look at them before the Shuttle has returned. You can see the camera in the first picture and the lense looked Nikon'ish, but I was not sure. It turns out this is the Kodak DCS 760, which is a Nikon F5 body with Kodak electronics.

Microsoft Word redaction tool

Microsoft has published a tool to prevent this kind of governmental SNAFU:
Redaction is the careful editing of a document to remove confidential information. The Microsoft Office Word 2003 Redaction Add-in makes it easy for you to mark sections of a document for redaction. You can then redact the document so that the sections you specified are blacked out. You can either print the redacted document or use it electronically.
Sensitive government documents, confidential legal documents, insurance contracts, and other sensitive documents are often redacted before being made available to the public. With the Word 2003 Redaction Add-in, users of Microsoft Office Word 2003 now have an effective, user-friendly tool to help them redact confidential text in Word documents.
Sounds good, right? Now watch Microsoft chicken out:

Lessons learned

A few things I learned since I got my brand new toy:
- I am in pretty bad shape. I am not lacking power but fitness. The only way to improve this is to use the bike, which I try to do three times a day. A short run in the morning and at noon, plus a long one in the evening.
- The bike fits (easily) into the Smart, but not into my car. I can only put it next to me into the passenger seat. I may want to take the bike to the IAA auto show in September as a benchmark.
- You do need a kickstand. Leaning the bike against walls does not cut it. Sooner or later it's going to fall over.
- Lots of people don't know how to properly switch gears on their bikes. I have seen a couple of them riding with the chain on the smallest chainring on the crankset as well as on the cassette, leading to tremendous shear on the chain.
- The Shimano Deore components have improved considerably over the last 15 years. It's incredible how easily the chain travels up the cassette.
I also found a nice animation showing how the bike folds.

Sometimes it's good that you don't know what is happening in the cockpit. Capt. Hajo brings you this case of a near miss on the runway in Boston Logan. If you don't understand all the details here is a summary:
An Air Lingus A330 jetliner was cleared to take off from a runway pointing towards SSE. Five seconds later a US Airways B737 was cleared to take off from a runway pointing towards E. At the intersection of these runways the Airbus was already airborne and the Boeing passed underneath because the co-pilot had seen the Airbus and told his captain to keep the aircraft on the runway and then took off shortly thereafter. 381 lifes saved.
Now read the second last paragraph again.

Around the Nürburgring in a van

"I do that lap time with a van." That's what Sabine Schmitz, née Reck, the queen of Nürburgring, said to Jeremy Clarkson when he was finally able to run around the track in 9:59 minutes in a Jaguar. Clarkson is an excellent driver, but he has no real experience on this very difficult racetrack. Sabine Schmitz in contrast has done between 14,000 and 15,000 laps. In her own car she can do the track in eight minutes, with three passengers. I understand she burns through two sets of tires per day. So here she is trying Nürburgring in under 10 minutes - in a Diesel-powered Ford Transit which does 0-60 mph in 21 seconds. Watch her pass motorbikes:

Having participated for years on Usenet and Fidonet, I have only piece of advice: Never mudsling with a pig. The pig likes it and you get dirty.
If Scoble tries to have the last word, he is going to blow up the whole place. Currently he is attracting trolls who like to pick a fight. And there are a whole lot more trolls than you can successfully fight. Plus, this whole Scobleizer-gets-payed-by-Microsoft only works as long as he is generating positive vibes for Microsoft. When that stops to work, this project will be killed by the enemies within that Scoble has already accumulated.
Update: It appears Scoble is taking a week off:

This is a good thing. Not necessarily if he has been told to take a week off.
