Microsoft will not pull the plug on Windows 10

From a blog post:

Extended Security Updates for Windows 10:

For individuals: An enrollment wizard will be available through notifications and in Settings, making it easy to enroll in ESU directly from your personal Windows 10 PC. Through the enrollment wizard, you’ll be able to choose from three options:

  • Use Windows Backup to sync your settings to the cloud—at no additional cost..
  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points—at no additional cost..
  • Pay $30 USD (local pricing may vary).

1000 reward points is nothing. If you want to turn reward points into dollars, you get $5 Apple credit for 6690 points. It’s Microsoft’s way of saying “please please please use Bing”.

This ESU will be good for a year, as of this writing, from October 2025. And I do not believe for a second that Microsoft will pull the plug on security updates a year later. They have to develop them for enterprise customers anyway and it would be madness to expose people at home who cannot upgrade their Windows 10 PCs to Windows 11 because of some requirements that Microsoft itself has set.

Having said that, if you can upgrade to Windows 11, then please do. It’s really only Windows 10 if you ask your browser.
