A couple of years ago, I created a forum on the ginlo messenger, motivated by two things: give the messenger a push, because my friend Stefan Rubner worked there, and secondly because I wanted to have a place for readers on my site to discuss amongst themselves. I called it vowe’s magic flying circus and it quickly was referred to as the circus.
The circus has been moving a lot, and each time we lost the dead wood. People who had signed up but were not really interested in contributing. If you do not actively contribute, you will lose interest in even reading it. We moved to Microsoft Kaizala, then Telegram, then Signal, and two years ago to Microsoft Teams. I am happy that we moved away from Telegram which has become a dumpster fire.
Teams has proven to be too much overhead for our small operation. You really need to be a Microsoft ship with AAD (Azure Active Directory) to make this work. This is a SNAFU of Microsoft Accounts, AAD Accounts, and everything in-between. I had hopes for the private edition in Windows 11, but that has proven to be utterly useless. It’s closer to Skype than Teams, but not interoperable with Skype. Since I am an active Skype user, something had to give. From my daily use of Skype I know that Skype chat is useless with a few dozen people. I started looking elsewhere.
Two days ago, I started creating two alternative solutions, one built on Keybase.io (yes, it’s more than a directory) and the other one on Discord. And it quickly became obvious that Discord is the better solution.

Yes, previous experience with Slack. I have covered several IBM conferences on Slack. It shares a problem with Teams: to many it feels like work.
Discord ist eine gute Wahl.
Ich war ab Teams raus, habe immer gerne mitgelesen und viel gelernt, leider konnte ich nicht sonderlich viel beitragen.
Kann man den Circus @ Discord noch mal Probezeit-artig beitreten?
Yeap, würde mich auch mal anmelden wollen um reinzuschnuppern. IMO hätte auch ein privates Sub bei Reddit Sinn gemacht.

Hui, da freu ich mich – Ich mag den Circus und die Leute, die ihn ausmachen, sehr – aber Teams hat für mich schlecht funktioniert – da ich schon 12 Stunden pro Tag auf der Instanz für die Arbeit hänge… Bin deswegen leider selbst zu fast-dead wood geworden. Mal sehen, wie es auf Discord wird…

Gibt es für altes Treibholz einen Weg auf deinen Discord Server?
Discord ist gut. Ich nutze es gern für das, wo es her kam: für Gaming. Deshalb kein Klarname aber den kann man pro Server ändern.

War auf Telegram zum stillen Leser geworden, den Wechsel auf Teams habe ich erfolgreich übersehen. Würde auch gerne auf Discord wieder mit einsteigen.
Das ist keine Einladung. Wir suchen keine stillen Mitleser. Mittlerweile kennen sich alle und akzeptieren, dass wir nur aktive Mitglieder brauchen, die mit unseren Regeln leben können, also etwa Klarnamen und erkennbares Foto. Mit dem Mimimi (“ich nehme das auch fürs Zocken und für Nitro will ich nicht zahlen”) beschäftige ich mich nicht mehr.
I‘m surprised that keybase.io was even considered. I like the technology, but somehow it never took off. What was your reason to not use it?

Nun denn, was gibt es denn dann zu berichten, wenn es keine Einladung ist? Von Kaizala bis Signal war ich auch dabei – Teams war tatsächlich ungeeignet, wenn man es den ganzen Tag schon für die Arbeit nutzt. Dischord wäre nett gewesen, aber als “dead wood” bleibt dann wohl nur Groucho Marx zu zitieren…
