The case for the naked iPhone

There is a piece on ZDNet that resonates with me: “Apple politely explains why iPhone cases are a waste of money”. I broke only one iPhone: the iPhone 6S Plus. That was quite fragile, and I dropped it on the street, where it fell on one of the corners. It did not have a case on, because I never had used one before. I started using cases and I loved the tan leather ones.

I also used smart battery cases on the Xs Max and the 11 Pro. Especially the latter was particularly good since it had a shutter button for the camera. But I did only use these cases where I needed extra power for the day.

Other than that, I have not put any cases on the iPhone since the 11 Pro. I dropped them, but I did not break them. I dropped the 13 Pro at least a dozen times, on hard floors. When it happens, my heart skips a beat. But so far, no damage at all. There are some very faint scratches on the front glass since I always put it down with the camera up.

Time to relax. iPhones have become tough. A friend dropped hers in the pool and was excited that it was still working. I explained to her what IP68 rating means. Yes, you can drop your iPhone 13 Pro in the pool without killing it.

  1. Yes, I managed to put an ugly dent into the border of my 12 – other than that, a rough thing. I’ve even started cleaning it under water sometimes.

  2. Ich habe um mein 13 Pro auch keine Hülle und werde dafür öfters für verrückt erklärt. Die leichten Kratzer auf dem Glas habe ich aus dem gleichen Grund leider auch, was mich ein wenig überrascht, da das Glas ja mittlerweile so stark sein soll. Gibt wohl doch physikalische Grenzen… Mir ist das 13 Pro auch schon einige Male runtergefallen, lediglich Beton hat für ein zwei kleinere Blessuren am Rahmen gesorgt, die aber erstaunlich gering sind für den Sturz.

  3. Für mich ist das Case seit dem iPhone 6 mehr ein Schutz gegen das Runterfallen überhaupt als gegen die eventuell dadurch entstehenden Schäden.

    Ohne Case hab ich irgendwie immer das ungute Gefühl das iPhone könnte mir aus der Hand gleiten 🤔

    1. Beim 11 Pro war das heikel. Aber seit den 12ern ist das Gehäuse wieder “eckig” und greift sich sehr gut. Da ich kleine Hände habe, brauche ich unbedingt das normale, nicht das Max.

      1. Das hat nicht nur etwas mit den Händen zu tun. Mein iPhone lebt in meiner vorderen linken Hosentasche. Wenn ich keine Hülle drum habe, rutscht es mir zu oft direkt aus der Hosentasche (meist wenn ich aufstehe). Mit der Hülle kein Thema.

      2. Ich bin seit dem Wechsel vom XR auf das 12er wieder mit Hülle unterwegs.

        Genau das “eckige” Gehäuse ist der Grund. Mit der Lederhülle von Apple fühlt es sich für mich angenehmer an. Dem abgerundeten Design von 6 – 11 werde ich noch lange nachtrauern.

        Optisch finde ich die Kombi schwarzes Display, dünner roter Metallrahmen (Product Red), schwarze Lederhülle auch ganz ansprechend.

  4. The cost of a case is far below cost of repair. The phones costing >1k€ does not entice taking risks, at least not if you have to pay the phone yourself and are looking for some resale value to transition to a new phone down the line. The rim on the case also prevents the faint but present scratches when putting it face down on a table.

  5. Totally agree. Still, I put mine in a nice Apple leather case simply because the camera bump got annoyingly big. I try it without a case now and then but sooner or later I get annoyed and the phone slips back into its tight leather dress.

  6. The only reason I have a case on my phone is to have a place to put a 20€ bill so that I always have cash on me when I leave the house.

  7. Mein xs max ist mit ca. 23 Monaten auf dem Buckel in 10cm Wassertiefe Max 5sec lang gestorben. Laut Apple normal. Die Dichtung hält nicht so lange. Ich war jedenfalls enttäuscht. Dank AppleCare war das Problem überschaubar, hat aber bei mir das Vertrauen in die wasserdichtigkeit erheblich eingeschränkt.

    Mein 13 pro Max oder wie auch immer das jetzt heißt, ist ein wahrlich robuster Kollege. Auf einen wassertest verzichte ich bewusst. 😅 ein Case hat es trotzdem. Alleine schon, weil es dann nicht so unerträglich kippelt. Aber auch, weil ich es in der hinteren Hosentasche habe und schon einen tiefen Kratzer ins Frontals gemacht habe, als ich mich ohne Case auf einen Stein gesetzt habe. Aber Respekt. Kaputt gegangen ist es nicht.

  9. Für mich sind Hüllen weniger ein Mittel um die *Folgen* von Stürzen zu verhindern, sondern die Stürze an sich.

    Zumindest die S-Klassen und Folds sind ohne Case wie Seifenstücke – ich finde das echt unsäglich. Mit Hülle entstehen Kanten oder gar an sich Grip, deshalb nutze ich sie oft, gerne abwechseln und dem Tag angepasst.

    Die Edelstahlrahmen und die Box-Bauform mit geradem Glas der iPhones sind widerstandsfähiger als das ‘Armour Aluminium’ (echt jetzt?) der Samsungs. Zeit, dass die da mal nachziehen.

  10. Ich finde die allermeisten Cases einfach nur hässlich. Meine iPhones sind schon seit Jahren „nackt“. Klar, das Telefon bekommt so mehr Kratzerchen und Dellen ab. Das finde ich bei einem so intensiv genutzten Alltagsgegenstand nicht so schlimm.

    1. Stimme zu – verwende eigentlich ausschließlich Pitaka Aramid Cases (seit dem S8) und wo es die nicht gibt (Fold 3) die Samsung Variante. Aber gerade beim Fold tut es richtig weh 😉

  12. Habe mein 12 pro max auch „nackt“
    Nur ein Feigenblatt auf der Rückseite, die magnetisch den Apfel abdeckt in Form einer MOFT Leder snap-on , den ich liebe.
    Man kann es als Aufsteller nutzen, aber gibt auch so die nötige Haptik bzw. Griffigkeit, die man ganz ohne Hülle manchmal vermisst.
    Ich liebe dich die Kanten und den Schirm und würde den unten durch eine Hülle verhüllen.

    Ich verstand auch bitte die Menschen, die Monatelang die Klebefolie auf ihren Alltagsgegenständen ließen. Man will die Sachen in ihrer Pracht genießen, wir es sich der Designer gedacht hat….
