Secret Santa has sent the last item from my wishlist, and it is insanely great. The Mcdodo CA-882 Digital Pro 100W PD Fast Charge Type-C to Type-C Data Cable carries 5 A of power which takes you to 100 W with 20 V. This is however not the perfect data cable, because it carries data only at USB 2.0 speeds: 480 Mbit/s. Thunderbolt goes up to 40.000 MBit/s.

What makes this cable insanely great is the display with tells you how much juice is actually flowing through the cable. When you charge an iPad Pro with a 65W USB PD charger, it will pull 40 W through the Thunderbolt port, but only 24 W through the Magic Keyboard port. If you need to quickly charge your iPad Pro, always go through the main port, not the auxiliary charging port on the keyboard.

As you know by now, I like to knock on the claim that USB-C will put an end to the multitude of chargers we own, and that is simply not true. Here I am charging the Lenovo Tab P13 Pro with the same charger that allowed the iPad Pro to pull 40 W of power and I am only getting 18 W. Replacing this standard charger with the one provided by Lenovo will take it up to 30 W, because the tablet negotiates a special 10 V and 3 A mode. Without digging deeper I assume that it was only getting 2 A with 9 V from the RealPower charger. In both cases that tablet was claiming it was rapid charging.

This is a quality Nylon braided cable and it’s only 12 Euro. Highly recommended. Now I need to find something else to put on my wishlist. And it’s all because of you, Secret Santa. Thank you! You made me happy today.

Twitter und die Timeline

Twitter ist in einem Interessenkonflikt gefangen. Die meisten Nutzer wollen die Tweets der Leute sehen, denen sie folgen, mit den neuesten zuerst. Das heißt “Latest Tweets” und ist nicht der Standard. Twitter will dir nämlich die Aufreger zuspielen. Das sind die Tweets, mit denen du am meisten interagierst. Anklicken, beantworten, liken, retweeten. Twitter nennt das “Home”.

Bisher war es möglich, auf dern Stern rechts oben zu klicken und von Home auf Latest Tweets umzuschalten. Das geht nicht mehr. Nun stehen die als Tabs nebeneinander und bei jedem Neustart der App wird wieder Home angezeigt. Ihr müsst nun selbst daran denken, auf Latest Tweets umzuschalten, sonst kriegt Ihr nur den Krawall.

Update 14.3.: Twitter hat den Quatsch rückgängig gemacht.

Praktische Hilfestellung: Wenn man keine gemeinsame Sprache spricht

Microsoft Translator im Split-Modus. Man sitzt sich gegenüber und sieht, ob das Smartphone die eigene Sprache versteht. Dann wird automatisch übersetzt und die Übersetzung angezeigt und vorgelesen.

Die vor dem Krieg flüchtenden Ukrainer können sich häufig schlecht verständlich machen, wenn nur slawische Sprachen aber keine der bei uns verbreiteten westlichen Sprachen verstehen. Hier kann Software helfen.

Ich benutze Microsoft Translator mit Japanern. Das geht mit Apps auf Android und iOS, aber auch im Web. Es ist auch in Teams und Skype eingebaut. Translator beherrscht das wechselseitige Gespräch nicht in ukrainischer Sprache, aber in Russisch.

Alternativ bietet sich Google Translate (Android & iOS) an, dass Ukrainisch kann, aber nicht diesen Gegenüber-Modus beherrscht. Im Conversation Mode werden beide Sprachen in der gleichen Orientierung angezeigt. Bei beiden Programmen muss man das Smartphone im Auto-Modus nicht berühren. Es funktioniert “einfach so”. Wichtig sind nur Sprechpausen, in denen der Übersetzer tätig wird.

After much deliberation I put this Anker 622 Powerbank on my wish list. And within a week, it showed up at my door. Thank you, Secret Santa!

I wanted a power bank that made use of the MagSafe charging feature so that it would work without a power cable. The most elegant solution is Apple’s own MagSafe Powerbank. It integrates directly with the iPhone power management and it is prettier. But the Anker power bank had some things going for it. First of all, it charges via USB-C which gives me more options. When I find a power cable I can either charge the iPhone via Lightning or the power bank via USB-C.

It also adds a little stand, which can be folded out. It will hold the iPhone in any direction, portrait or landscape.

And finally, it will also charge other devices like the AirPods case. Since I swap iPhones often, I am now very happy that I have a MagSafe power bank instead of a Smart Battery Case which fits only one particular iPhone.

This Powerbank will work with iPhone 12 and 13 MagSafe compatible cases, but not with other cases, warns Anker. I think they mean that it will be unable to hold on to the phone without a magnet in the case.

And yes, I really use the iPhone without a case and I have done this ever since the iPhone 11. Don’t hold me accountable when you break your phone, but I have not broken an iPhone since the iPhone 6S Plus. I always used the saddle brown leather case and when I did not get one for the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple asked me to use it without a case to demonstrate how sturdy they have become. The 11 Pro developed a small crack in one corner of the back but the 12 Pro and 13 Pro do not show any wear although I dropped them dozens of times. My heart still skips a beat when I pick them up but so far so good.

Ein paar Gedanken zum Apple Event

Ich fange heute mal hinten an:

Endlich ein Apple Display, das zwar teuer, aber bezahlbar ist. 1749 Euro inklusive Standfuß ist eine andere Ansage als das dreimal so teure XDR Display. Auf so etwas haben ganz viele Apple User gewartet. Das Mac Studio Display wird zum MacBook genauso gekauft wie zu Mac Mini und Mac Studio. 1 Thunderbolt, 3 USB-Ports, 12 MP Kamera, 3 Mikrofone, 6 Lautsprecher. Das passt. Für “schlanke” 460 Euro mehr gibt es einen höhenverstellbaren Fuß. Naja.

Für mich ist der 27″ iMac damit erst mal tot. Mac Mini plus Studio Display leisten das gleiche und sind auch besser in Zukunft umbaubar.

Mac Studio ist der neue Mac Pro. Schneller, kleiner und besser. Mit 2.299 Euro für die M1 Max-Version ist er außerhalb dessen, was mich interessiert. Mit M1 Ultra, was man auch als zwei M1 Max ansehen kann, kostet er das Doppelte (4599 Euro). Mit allem was geht, kommt man noch mal auf den doppelten Preis (9199 Euro). Die Leistungsdaten dieser Prozessoren machen mich schwindelig. Der Preis auch. Und das ist noch nicht alles. Einer kleinen Bemerkung entnehme ich, “on another day” wird es auch noch einen neuen Mac Pro geben.

Der Rest war vorhersehbar:

iPhone 13 und 13 Pro in grün, iPhone SE mit aktuellem A15 Prozessor und 5G, iPad Air springt von A14 auf M1-Prozessoren, bekommt die 12 Megapixel Centerstage-Kamera und wahlweise 5G. Die 64 GB-Version für 679 Euro kann man wohl vergessen. Damit sind bei 256 GB nun 849 Euro und 1019 Euro für die 5G-Version fällig.

Was mir aufgefallen ist: Bis auf die Chip-Leute und den Chef alles Frauen als Presenter. Die im Einspieler für den neuen Prozessor vorgestellten Programmierer und Designer waren ebenfalls alle weiblich. #internationalwomensday

Was micht enttäuscht hat: Kein Wort zu Russland & Ukraine. Blauer Pulli und gelbes Watchband beim Chef war mir zu wenig.

LEGO Kickstand

LEGO ist mein 3D-Drucker. Alles, was an kleinen Accessories fehlt, baue ich in LEGO nach. Hier fehlte ein Folio für den Lenovo Tab P12 Pro, das als Kickstand dienen kann.

Die Konstruktion war einfach. Eine Grundplatte, vorne zwei kleine Steine 2×2 und hinten einen Block 3x8x3. Darunter zwei Kufen 10×2, damit die Chose nicht nach hinten umkippt. Fertig.

Dank einer großzügigen Spende von Abdelkader muss ich nicht gleich alles wieder auseinanderreißen, nachdem ich es benutzt habe. Mit den Bausätzen für Raumschiffe oder Häuser kann ich nichts anfangen, aber Standard-Bausteine und Grundplatten in schwarz, grau, weiß oder rot kann ich immer gebrauchen!

Jetstreaming new machines

I have a rather good feeling of how fast a machine is when I first try it, but I still like to run a browser benchmark to see if I am right. Since I know dozens of JetStream2 results, this benchmark gives me a good indication if my assessment was right. Everything above 100k feels fast to me, and everything beyond 200k very fast.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook (SD 7c gen2) felt slow to me and a benchmark of 72k showed that I was right. The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro (SD 870) felt slightly faster and in fact it is with a benchmark of 86k. The new Motorola Edge 30 Pro is powered by the SD 8 gen 1 and quite a lot faster.

Just for perspective, my Surface Pro 8 (i7) clocks in at 190k, so did the Surface Laptop Studio (i7), both with the latest Edge version. The iPhone 13 Pro (A15) comes in at 215k and the mighty iPad Pro (M1) at 245k, both with Safari.

Apple Music & 3D Sound

Letzte Woche habe ich mich mit Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock anlässlich der Premiere seiner neuen EP Kind of Class… Ish über Dolby Atmos bei Musikproduktionen unterhalten. Jochen ist sehr enthusiastisch über die Möglichkeit, Musikinstrumente räumlich anzuordnen statt auf einer Bühne, die bei Kopfhörern mitten durch den Kopf geht. Auf der anderen Seite ist das für den Toningenieur auch eine neue Herausforderung, die er erst mal meistern muss. Jochen erzählte von immer neuen Anläufen, bis er zu einem guten Ergebnis kam. Das kann man aktuell auf Apple Music in Atmos, auf Spotify aber nur in Stereo hören.

Apple schickt nun heute eine Presseinformation über ein Gespräch zwischen Zane Lowe und Giles Martin raus, das sich mit der Neuabmischung des Beatles-Alben “1” und “Strawberry Fields Forever” in Dolby Atmos beschäftigt. Kurzzusammenfassung: Die Beatles waren schon immer am technischen Fortschritt interessiert und Paul & Ringo sind es immer noch. Es ist dabei eine ziemliche Herausforderung, Klassiker zu modernisieren und dabei den Character zu erhalten. Ich fand das besonders markant bei “Yesterday”. Die ursprüngliche Stereo-Abmischung nutze ich gerne, um Stereo zu demonstrieren, oder auch nur zum Test, ob alles richtig angeschlossen ist. Die Gitarre ist anfangs nur auf dem rechten Kanal zu hören, die Streicher nur von links. Ganz anders die 3D-Aufnahme, speziell wenn man Head Tracking bei den AirPods aktiviert hat.

Ich bin sehr fasziniert von solchen Aufnahmen, befürchte aber, dass das an den meisten Menschen spurlos vorbeigeht.
