Navigate Sound Settings on Clubhouse

I have some strong opinions about Clubhouse sound and how to get the most out of it. I want to share this with you in two parts. Listeners and creators.

Always disable Spatial Audio for a better listening experience.

Listeners

As a listener, don’t mess around with Audio Quality settings. You can only make things worse. Leave it on Normal. What you can do for a better sound quality is to switch off Spatial Audio in the app. Tap on your own profile picture in the upper right corner and then again on the gear icon at the same place. Then disable Spatial Audio. Leave the room and come back into the room. This setting is sticky and will remain as you set it unless you have to login after a device change. If you are on Bluetooth headphones and want to listen to music, the quality difference is stunning. Awfully bad with Spatial Sound on, rather good with Spatial Sound off.

When you change Audio Quality from Normal to Music Mode, you are gaining nothing as a listener, but you give up speech optimizations when you open your microphone, to the point where you are not understandable at all. You lose echo cancellation which prevents sound looping from your speakers back into Clubhouse. Do not flash your microphone when you get excited. It makes a terrible noise and irritates the musician.

Creators

As a creator, make sure you have a proper mix-minus setup and that you are not sending the Clubhouse output back. If you see the ring around your avatar flashing when somebody else performs, you are looping their sound back. This gets much worse when you go into Music Mode.

In short: Only go to Music Mode when you know you have a perfect setup.

Sound quality

If you have cable headphones it does not matter whether you are in the audience or on stage. If you have regular Bluetooth headphones, the sound on the stage is horrible. This happens because your headphones will use a telephony profile when they enable the microphone. Only professional conference headphones that use Wideband audio are safe from that.

Moderators will lure you to the stage to boost their rooms. They are not outright lying that the sound on the stage is better. They often do not know. Try it yourself.

You can still help a room by going to the stage and then returning to the audience after a minute. That is what I do when I am not plugged in.

Ich habe viele Webcams probiert und auch nach Jahren ist BRIO die beste Webcam, die ich gesehen habe. 4k Auflösung, funktioniert auch mit wenig Licht. Absolut unproblematisch, WENN man sie mit dem richtigen Kabel angeschlossen hat. Die ganzen Ladekabel übertragen Daten nämlich nur mit 480 Mbit/s und damit macht die BRIO nur 720p. Schließt man ein USB-Kabel mit 5 GBit/s an, dann läuft sie erst zur Form auf. Bei USB-A erkennt man diese Kabel am blauen Plastikstück im Stecker. Viel Glück bei USB-C.

Es gibt zwei Editionen der BRIO: das normale Paket und die Streaming Edition. Beide sind aktuell im Angebot für rund 130 Euro, vor gut einem Jahr waren sie für das Doppelte nicht zu bekommen. Die Streaming Edition ist etwas billiger, hat aber keinen Nachteil. Sie enthält einfach ein 12-monatiges Frei-Abo für die Streaming Software XSplit. Diese Werbung bringt ein paar Euro ein, so wie Norton Antivirus auf PCs. Kann man installieren, muss man aber nicht.

Was ich aber dringend empfehle, statt der Software aus dem Karton, ist Logi Tune. Diese Software ist stets top-aktuell, ist viel schlanker und hat bei mir eine neuere Firmware installiert.

Stuff that works: Poly Sync 20

Meistens benutze ich Headsets für Videokonferenzen. Aber wenn es mal länger dauert oder wir an einem Ende zu zweit sitzen, dann mache ich den Schrank auf und hole den Poly Sync 20 raus. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Speakern ist er dann noch zu 100 Prozent geladen. Der Klang ist super, die Bedienung einfach und durch einen USB-Port kann man den Akku sogar nutzen, das Telefon nachzuladen. Meine Empfehlung.

How to play from Spotify, YouTube or iTunes into Clubhouse

It’s quite easy to play any sound from your Mac into Clubhouse. You need two components:

  1. Install Clubdeck and login.
  2. Install a VB cable.

Now you are ready to redirect your sound output to Clubdeck and thus into Clubhouse. Press Cmd-Space on your Mac and type “audio” to find the Audio MIDI Setup application.

  1. Press the + icon in the lower left corner and create a Multi-Output device. Select both the VB-Cable and the Built-in Output. Sound directed into this device will go into the virtual cable and will also come out of your speakers or headphones.
  2. Ctrl-click the Multi-Output Device and select the option to play sounds through this device. You will see a speaker icon next to it.

What happens here is very simple. When you play music from iTunes or Spotify it gets sent to the Multi-Output device and you can hear it on your speaker or headphones, the Built-In Output. It also gets sent into the VB-Cable.

In Clubdeck you click on the sliders icon at the top of the window, or on the Audio Settings of your room. This is where you switch the Input (mic) from your Built-In Microphone to VB-Cable. Make sure to switch the Audio quality to Music Mode. I also check off Spatial Audio, because it messes with my own listening experience.

Now people will only hear the music, but no longer the input of your microphone. If you want to speak, you can switch the input back from VB-Cable to Built-in Microphone.

This is just a very simple example that you build out with more options as you need them. You could add a mixer so that you can speak while the music is playing, you could use a Bluetooth headset instead of Built-in Microphone and Built-in Output

Microsoft Windows

On Windows this works exactly the same way, without the Multi-Output device. Unpack the installer, run it as Administrator (right click on installer), and reboot. Then you send your output into the VB-Cable.

Instead of the Multi-Output device, you enable the Listen function on the VB-Cable instead. It’s not easy to find this checkbox. You have to go to the old Control Panel and Manage audio devices.

There is a sequence of seven clicks to enable this monitoring. Without “Listening to this device”, you cannot hear the music playing:

Surface Slim Pen 2

Surface saw a long succession of pens, all built on the the N-trig technology. It uses the same digitizer for pen and touch. It needs a battery for to work. These were initially two batteries, one for Bluetooth and another one for the tip. Then Microsoft eliminated the second battery and then pen could work with a single AAAA battery. The Slim Pen replaced this type of battery and became rechargeable, either in the pen garage on the keyboard cover or in a separate inductive charger.

I like the solution with the keyboard cover, because it secures the pen against the screen when closed. This is much easier to handle than any other solution, even better than the ThinkPad stylus which is rather small. The slim pen is flat and has a button at the upper end which doubles as an eraser and a second button on the side.

Slim Pen 2 improves on the design by moving the forward button from the tip of your index finger to your thumb, which feels a bit more natural. The tip of the pen got more pointy and there is a motor inside which provides haptic feedback.

This is a very minor update. It looks different but gives exactly the same feeling when writing. The haptic feedback seems weird to me. It vibrates when you erase something for instance. I toned it all the way down. I like the pointy look but I would not replace a Slim Pen with a Slim Pen 2.

Both pens can be charged in the same places and they pair automatically with the Surface Pro the keyboard cover is attached to.

Surface Pro 8: Das gefällt mir

Das Surface Pro war ein wegweisendes Design, das mehrfach komplett und in Teilen kopiert wurde. Seit fünf Jahren sind das meine meistbenutzen Windows-PCs. Die dritte Generation brachte den Durchbruch, mit der vierten hielt das Design mit dem 12,3 Zoll großen Bildschirm Einzug, der durch sein 3:2-Format besser nutzbar war als die 16:9 Displays der modernen Notebooks. Ein eingebauter Kickstand hält das Display aufrecht, stufenlos von beinahe senkrecht bis zu ganz flach. Der mit Alcantara bespannte Tastaturdeckel enthält die Tastatur und das Trackpad. Der Bildschirm unterstützt 10-Finger Touch und Pens mit der N-trig-Technologie. Tastatur-Cover und Pen muss man einzeln erwerben.

Nun stellt Microsoft mit dem Surface Pro 8 das größte Re-Design seit dem Surface Pro 4 vor.

Meinem Surface Pro von 2017 folgten noch zwei Generationen mit neueren Intel-Prozessoren nach. 2019 legte Microsoft parallel die Reihe Surface Pro X auf, die statt der Intel-Architektur auf ARM-Prozessoren der Snapdragon-Reihe setzte. Durch den stromsparenden Chipset wurden Lüfter und Lüftungsschlitze überflüssig, im sehr schlanken Design kamen nun zwei USB-C Anschlüsse zum Einsatz und der Audio-Anschluss flog raus. Dafür wuchs der Bildschirm auf 13,3 Zoll und der Rand um den Bildschirm wurde kleiner.

Surface Pro 8 kombiniert nun beide Designs: Das 13,3 Zoll große Display hält mit der neuesten Intel-Generation Einzug, vom Surface Pro X übernimmt es die beiden USB-C Anschlüsse, nun mit Thunderbolt 4, und der Audio-Anschluss des Surface Pro 7 kehrt zurück. Alle Surface-Geräte haben einen eigenen Ladeanschluss mit Dock-Adapter, der magnetisch gehalten wird und sich nie änderte. Damit passen sie alle an das gleiche Surface Dock.

Der Tastatur-Anschluss blieb von Surface Pro 3 bis Surface Pro 7 gleich. Mit dem Surface Pro X führte Microsoft einen neuen Anschluss ein, der sich nun auch im Surface Pro 8 findet. Die Tastatur gibt es mit einem Parkplatz, in dem der Surface Slim Pen sicher aufbewahrt und geladen wird. Es empfiehlt sich deshalb, gleich die Kombination von Keyboard Cover und Slim Pen zu kaufen.

Surface Pro 8 ist das beste aus zwei Welten. Es hat zwar Lüftungsschlitze und einen Lüfter, den ich bisher jedoch noch nicht gehört habe. Auch wenn Windows 11 dem Surface Pro X eine Emulation für 64-bit Intel-Apps nachlieferte, so gibt es weitere Inkompatibilitäten. So kann ich beispielsweise den Gerätetreiber für mein Behringer Flow 8 nicht auf dem Surface Pro X installieren. Mit dem Surface Pro 8 sind diese Zeiten vorbei. Mit dem großen Bildschirm sieht es beinahe aus wie das Surface Pro X, die alte Tastatur passt.

Surface Pro 8 und Surface Pro X lassen sich beide auch über den USB-Port laden. Ich habe mittlerweile mein Surface Pro Dock gegen ein Lenovo Thunderbolt-Dock ersetzt, das mit allen Geräten funktioniert. Surface Pro 8 wird mit Windows 11 geliefert, Surface Pro X ließ sich problemlos upgraden. Nur mein Surface Pro von 2017 wird bisher nicht unterstützt und geht damit voraussichtlich auf’s Altenteil. Hätte ich Microsoft nicht eine Rücksendung binnen zwei Wochen zugesagt, dann würde Surface Pro 8 jetzt hierbleiben. 🙂

Voice Isolation in iOS 15

The next time you are in a call in a noisy environment like a driving car, check out the control center on your iPhone. When your microphone is open, you will find a new control: Mic Mode. This lets you select the plain old Standard Mode, Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum.

This is a recording in Skype with Standard. You will hear some music playing in the background:

And this is a recording in Voice Isolation, where the music is almost completely gone. You only hear it for a split second when I start or stop talking:

As you can hear, this setting makes AirPods much better for voice calls. Recommended!

A few thoughts on the Apple event

This is a pretty clear message. Apple has undone all the damage they did to the MacBook Pro. Magsafe charger, HDMI, SDcard reader, keyboard with full size function keys. It took six years, but Apple went full circle with the enclosure. Say goodbye to dongle hell. Great display with a notch that houses a 1080p webcam, better speakers and microphones. It looks pretty perfect to me.

These clearly are expensive Pro machines, starting at 2249 Eur for the 14″ M1 Pro and going up to 3849 Eur for the 16″ M1 Max model.The sweet spot for me are the 2749 Eur 14″ and the 2979 Eur 16″ model. There will be people who browse Facebook on these machines. 🙂

The less than a year old 13″ Pro is now offically old. And last year’s 13 Air found its rightful place. Still incredibly fast, quiet and relatively affordable.

The event kicked off with music and three newsbytes: new AirPods 3, now sweat and waterproof, with a new shape, HomePod mini in three new colors, and an entry level Apple Music subscription for 5 Eur a month. There is a catch: you have to use Siri to ask for your music, and it only plays on Siri-enable Apple devices.

I think the AirPods 3 will set a new standard because they adapt to your hearing with Adaptive EQ, much like the AirPods Max. I expect them to sound amazing. Now with Spatial Audio and “improved quality for Facetime calls”. Oh yes, there is room for improvement.
