Having fun with Jabra Support

I love everything about the Jabra Elite 10 (besides the color), but I have an interesting probem that I have not observed before with any other TWS. One of the earbuds discharges at roughtly double the speed of the other one. If something seems to be wrong with a brand new sample I usually ask for another sample, but this time I chose to take it to Jabra Support, since I already had an open case # with the Spatial Audio I was missing initially.

After quite a bit of back and forth with a number of reps (standard reset procedures, multiple photos of the earbuds and case) support finally escalated the issue to a supervisor who got back with an interesting explanation. See below:

Hello Volker Weber,

Apologizes for any confusion. Where these are so new, some of us are still learning some their quirks.

What you are experiencing is actually expected behavior.

Whichever earbud is removed from the case first will become the primary earbud. This earbud has to communicate with both the phone and the other earbud. Where the single biggest draw on the battery is the Bluetooth antenna this will cause one earbud to drain at what is affectively twice the rate of the other. 

To confirm this you can removed the left bud from the case first, wait for it to connect and then remove the right one. This will cause the left to be the primary and you should notice the difference in battery performance.

If you are getting less than expected battery time from either earbud, please let us know.

Sidenote: DHRME observed a similar behavior in their review of the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 S2.

I tried forcing the left earbud to discharge faster than the right one, but so far I have failed. This is starting from 100% charge on both earbuds (3 hours in the case), very carefully starting with the left earbud. Exactly one hour later, the left earbud has lost 15%. This is inline with the expected behavior. The right earbud however is down 25% which is well belows specs.

However, I think there are two issues at hand:

  1. My right earbud is probably not performing like it should.
  2. Software should routinely switch the roles of primary and secondary earbud. You can force it by returning the old primary to the case for a few seconds, but why should you have to?

This will be resolved and I am still very satisfied with the Elite 10.

PS: This is real life testing, not unboxing or first look. You need to stay with a product to really learn what is going on.

Apple AirPods are getting smarter

I love software updates that make after-market devices smarter. Last night my AirPods received a new firmare: 6A300 for the AirPods (Max) and 6A301 for the AirPods Pro 2. I am running iOS 17, which is a prerequisite for some new features.

Most important addition for people who use AirPods for conference calls: you can now mute/unmute a call with a single press. A double press will hang up the call. As a reminder: all current AirPods have Personalized Spatial Audio. The iPhone camera determines the shape of your earlobes and adjusts the spatial audio experience.

Another important customization is a part of the Headphone Accomodations inside Settings/Accessibility/Audio/Video. It lets you tune your AirPods to your hearing profile. The difference is absolutely stunning. I know somebody with a 90 percent hearing loss on one ear and only the AirPods allow him to hear stereo. You can build this profile with the Mimi Hearing Test. Once you built this profile, AirPods can act as a hearing aid focussing on the person in front of you.

The second generation AirPods Pro take all of this one step further. After the update, they can seamlessly adjust between Transparency and ANC, they will adjust the volume depending on the sound around you, and they will automatically lower media playback when you start speaking and switch on Transparency with a focus on the person in front of you.

Ever since the AirPods Max blew me away with their computational audio, I have amazed of what Apple is doing in the audio space. This stuff keeps getting better, and if possible without buying new devices.

Apple Software Updates

Nächsten Montag, am 18.09.23 ab etwa 18:00 Uhr erscheinen (unter anderem) iOS 17 und watchOS 10. Ich habe aktuell schon die Release Candidates installiert. Und mir machen vor allem die kleinen Dinge gr0ße Freude, wie dieses Peanuts Watch Face. Das hier ist das Always-On Display, das beim Aufwachen der Uhr einen hellen Hintergrund bekommt, auf dem Snoopy und Woodstock immer wieder neue Kapriolen aufführen. Das macht gute Laune.

Der Standby-Modus in iOS 17 lässt sich durch Widgets konfigurieren und zeigt nachts ein stark abgedunkeltes Display mit roter Schrift auf schwarzem Hintergrund. Voraussetzung: Das iPhone wird geladen und ist im Querformat aufgestellt. Aktuell nutze ich dafür meine Anker 622 Powerbank. Ich bin gespannt, was ich da noch so alles brauche. Ganz heißer Kandidat ist der Anker 3-in-1 Cube, der allerdings auch ordentlich teuer ist.

Weil es gerade im Bild ist. Dieses Jahr habe ich das iPhone im Apple Clear Case gehabt. Das hat sich sehr bewährt. Rundum guter Schutz, auch für Display und Kamera, keine Verfärbungen.

A few thoughts on the Apple event

Predictions for the Apple iPhone event were on point this year. Apple did not suprise and they also did not disappoint. And predictions were wrong in one important respect. Apple did not raise prices.

My thoughts in no particular order:

  • iPhone 15 gets the Dynamic Island that was introduced last year on the 14 Pro. It also has the A16 Bionic processor found in the 14 Pro. The main camera gets upgraded to 48 MPixel, also found in … the 14 Pro. What it does not get is the variable refresh rate display, which Apple calls Promotion. Hence, not always-on.
  • iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max get a new A17 Pro processor which once again blows past all other smartphones from any vendor. It also has a new internal architecture, much like the non-Pro 14 last year, that makes it more repairable. The frame drops the stainless steel which is replaced by Titanium, making the Pro model lighter than any before. Good change. Pro has a 3x telephoto lens and Pro Max goes to 5x.
  • The photo/video features are just blowing my mind. I need to wrap my head around all the details.
  • Apple drops Lightning and replaces it with USB-C. That is going to be popular with the Android crowd and tech nerds, but most regular iPhone users could not care less. Lightning is still superior in terms or durability and mechanical construction. Old accessories might no longer work. Apple will be happy to sell you new ones like the EarPods with USB-C connector. (EarPods are still the best casual microphone you can use, far superior to Bluetooth).
  • USB-C is a plug that can be used in many ways. On iPhone it supports USB 2, on iPhone Pro USB 3 with 10 Gbit/s. That is still not Thunderbolt like the iPad Pro uses. We will see what the charging cable will deliver. On iPad Pro it only support USB 2, so you need to buy a better (and thicker) cable.
  • Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 use a new chip based on the A15 making them faster. Peak display brightness goes up, but the design remains the same. A major design overhaul is expected for next year, when the Apple Watch turns 10.
  • Apple talks quite a bit about their progress towards their goal to become carbon-neutral by 2030. Apple Watch is the first product to get there. Apple is increasingly using recycled material and now is also dropping leather from all accessories. No more leather bands or leather cases. I like.
  • A neat party trick is the ability to double tap your index finger and thumb to execute the default option on Apple Watch, like dropping or answering a call, snoozing you alarm etc. This has been announced for the new watches only.

Marshall Motif A.N.C. hat einen Nachfolger

Marshall hat ein gutes Produkt besser gemacht. Die zweite Generation hat ein neues Chipset, das Bluetooth 5.3 unterstützt und für Bluetooth LE Audio vorbereitet ist. Das Case ist wertiger geworden, die geriffelten Stummel haben nun einen bronzenen Abschluss und sind etwas dicker als die der ersten Generation. Das fühlt sich gut an! Das Case hat ein ähnliches Format wie das der AirPods Pro, ist nur etwas dicker. Dafür ist es robuster und nicht so kratzempindlich.

Die Laufzeit wächst von 4,5 auf 6 Stunden und mit dem Case kommt man nun auf 30 statt auf 20 Stunden. Die Software zeigt nun auch den Ladestand des Case an. Neben dem einfachen SBC unterstützen sie auf den standardisierten AAC, nicht aber die proprietären aptX Codecs von Qualcomm.

Ich mag diese Earbuds, weil sie einen ganz eigenen Style haben, sehr griffig und bequem sind. Die Amazon-Bewertungen der ersten Generation zeigen, dass Kunden damit sehr zufrieden sind. Das sind meiner Ansicht nach die besten Earbuds, die Marshall anbietet, aber ich würde sie nicht zum Telefonieren einsetzen. Für den Business-Einsatz sind sie ohnehin nicht geeignet, da sie sich stets nur mit einem Gerät verbinden.

3000 days #dontbreakthechain

Yesterday I completed 3000 days where I closed all my rings on Apple Watch. That is more than 8 years. My longest streak has been more than a thousand days, but then eventually something happens that makes you miss da day. Sometimes it’s a bug in the software, and other times it is a bug in your body.

Counting from the first day that I closed my rings (600 kcal, 30 minutes exercise, 12 hours standing) it took me 3021 days to get to 3000. At the very end, on September 7 it showed 3000 days, did not give me the award, went back to 2999 and only on September 8 it awarded me.

3000 out of 3021, that is 99.3 % success. Being consistent makes all the difference. No matter what the weather looks like, no matter if you are lazy today, just go out and get moving. Many things happened in those eight years. I had surgery, I woke up in an ICU, I got teeth implanted, but I always picked myself up.

My habits have formed, I rarely check if I completed the rings, and that is how I missed 21 days, sometimes by just three kcal. But every single month looks like this calendar view.

Stuff that works: Headset für Zoom/Teams

Es gibt nichts, was ich so ausgiebig getestet habe wie professionelle Headsets. Und dabei gibt es einige, die ich ohne Bedenken empfehle. Mein Profil: Bluetooth Multipoint, d.h. Mobiltelefon plus PC. Immer mit USB-Dongle, weil das Call Handling und die Teams -Integration über diese Schnittstelle geht.

HP/Poly/Plantronics Voyager 5200 UC ist das kleinste mobile Geräte. Das hält jeden Lärm weg, selbst ein Auto, das BRÜLLT und Wind, wenn man auf dem Rad sitzt. Viele Varianten mit/ohne Case und verschiedenen Dongles. Aktuell ist ein BT700.

Jabra Evolve2 sind die Geräte. die meine Stimme am besten wiedergeben. Insbesondere das Evolve 2 65 mit seinem langen Mikrofonarm sticht dabei heraus. Die Chefin nutzt das Evolve2 75 mit dicken, weichen Polstern. Ich bin mittlerweile auf das Evolve2 65 Flex umgestiegen, weil es so saubequem ist.

Von HP/Poly/Plantronics gibt es zwei empfehlenswerte Geräte. Besser im Klang ist das Voyager 4320, weil es den längeren Mikrofonarm hat. Schicker ist das Voyager Focus 2.

Wer partout kein Headset tragen will und ein Einzelbüro hat, kommt mit einem Konferenzlautsprecher gut aus. Dort habe ich auch zwei Empfehlungen: Poly Sync 20 und Jabra Speak2 55. Den deutlich teureren Speak2 75 muss man nicht nehmen, aber man achte auf das 2 hinter dem Speak. Die alte Baureihe hatte nur ein Mikro. Not good enough.

Es gibt bei allen Geräten UC- und Teams-Modelle. Die Teams-Modelle haben einen dedizierten Knopf, mit dem man den Teams Client nach vorne holen kann und einem Meeting beitreten kann.

Die Aufzählung ist aus meiner Sicht vollständig. Earbuds ohne Mikrofonarm sind nicht dabei. Die stören einfach die Zuhörer auf die Dauer mit schlechtem Audio. Es gibt auch ein neues Headset, das sehr gut zu sein scheint, das ich aber nicht getestet habe: EPOS Impact 1000.

Neue Jabra Earbuds: Elite 10 und Elite 8 Active

Jabra kündigt heute zwei neue Earbuds an, von denen ich eins ausgiebig getestet habe: Die Elite 10 sind das neue Spitzenmodell und stehen in der Tradition von gleich zwei Vorgängern. Sie lösen die Elite 7 Pro ab, die mir aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht zugesagt haben und sie nehmen Anleihen von den alten Elite 85t, sind aber viel kompakter.

Elite 85t, Elite 10, Elite 7 Pro

Die Elite 7 Pro haben einen langen Hals, der relativ weit in den Gehörgang eintaucht, um diesen mit einem Silikonpropfen zu verschließen. Die anderen beiden haben ein größeres Silikon-Element, dass viel angenehmer im Ohr sitzt und das Ohr nicht vollständig abschließt. Dabei waren die 85t recht groß geraten, während die 10 nun weiter minimiert wurden. Beide haben einen größeren Treiber, weil ja mehr Luft im Gehörgang verbleibt.

Diese kleinen Silikon-Manschetten müssen passen. Sind sie zu klein, rutscht der Earbud und die Basswiedergabe leidet. Sind sie zu groß, dann sind sie nicht so bequem. Dabei kann es sein, dass man unterschiedliche Größen links und rechts braucht. Geduld ist gefragt, wenn man das optimale Ergebnis haben will. Jabra liefert vier (!) ovale (!) Paare aus: S, M, L, XL. M ist vormontiert, ich fühle mich mit L am wohlsten. Das spricht dafür, dass man sie vielleicht XS, S, M und L nennen sollte.

Ein bisschen Leckage gleichen die Elite 10 über einen Feedback-Mechanismus aus, der auch für ANC und Hearthrough benötigt wird. Das Ergebnis ist bei mir eindeutig: Das sind die angenehmsten Earbuds in der Geschichte von Jabra. Toll. Diesen Preis hielten vorher die Elite 5, aber noch mit runden statt ovalen Passstücken. Auch wenn die Elite 10 nicht ganz in meiner Ohrmuschel verschinden, habe ich schon mehrere Stunden auf dem Ohr geschlafen. 😇

Ich passe die Wiedergabe ein bisschen an meine alten Ohren an, in dem ich die Höhen anhebe und gebe etwas mehr Bass dazu, weil ich das mag. Das sind nur sehr behutsame Anpassungen, weil mir der neutrale Klang gut gefällt. Die beiden Tasten auf den Ohren lassen sich ebenfalls individuell gestalten. Hält man sie lange gedrückt, ändert sich die Lautstärke, links wird es lauter, rechts leiser.

Wie die anderen aktuellen Elite 2 bis 8 lassen sich die neuen Elite 10 auch einzelnen im Mono-Betrieb nutzen. Das war bei den 85t nur mit dem rechten Earbud möglich. Die Elite 10 haben sechs MEMS-Mikrofone zum Telefonieren, was ich bauartbedingt nicht im professionellen Umfeld machen würde. Dafür sind die Mikros zu weit vom Mund entfernt.

Aktuell unterstützen die Elite 10 Bluetooth 5.3 und sind für Bluetooth LE Streaming vorbereitet, das über ein Software-Update kommen soll. Ich habe aber auch noch keine Endgeräte, die das nutzen. Ich habe die Elite 10 mit meinem iPhone und dem ThinkPad verbunden und kann sie abwechselnd nutzen, weil sie die Verbindung parallel halten (Multipoint).

Die Elite 10 sollen Dolby Atmos und Dolby Headtracking unterstützen, aber das ist mir aktuell noch nicht gelungen. Ich habe das Problem gefunden. Spatial Audio ist standardmäßig ausgeschaltet und muss erst aktiviert werden. In der iOS App fehlte jedoch das Widget. Einmal die App löschen und neu installieren, dann taucht es auf.

Zeitgleich kündigt Jabra auch die Elite 8 Active an, die dank speziellem Coating bombenfest im Ohr sitzen und über ein IP68-Rating verfügen. Mehr geht nicht. Das sollen die robustesten Earbuds auf dem Markt sein.

DHRME haben die Jabra Elite 10 mit den Sony WF-1000 XM5 verglichen und die Elite 10 gewinnen ganz klar. Ich kenne diese neuen Sony Earbuds nicht, weiß aber, dass sie überall gelobt wurden. Das ist für mich ein weiteres Indiz dafür, dass ich mit meiner eigenen Einschätzung richtig liege. DHRME finden die Elite 10 übrigens als ausreichend gut für die Nutzung mit Teams und loben die Synchronisation des Mute Status.

Ich bin immer wieder begeistert, wie Jabra solche Earbuds von Generation zu Generation verbessert. So langsam gehen dem Unternehmen dabei die Marketingbegriffe aus. Diese Grafik soll einfach demonstrieren, wie sich die adaptive Geräuschunterdrückung immer weiter entwickelt.

Ein kleiner Hinweis noch zum Schluss. Man sollte die Kopfhörer bei Jabra stets registrieren. Der Service ist dann perfekt. Die Garantie für diese Earbuds beträgt zwei Jahre, auch beim Eindringen von Staub oder Wasser. Defekte Geräte werden einfach ausgetauscht.
